European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Why Ronaldo Quit Barcelona For Inter In World-record Transfer by Feranchek(op):
In an exclusive interview, former Barca president Joan Gaspart reveals that the Brazilian was set to stay at Camp Nou until Massimo Moratti intervened

Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has revealed that Ronaldo was keen to stay at the club prior to his blockbuster move to Inter, but decided on a transfer while Blaugrana officials were out celebrating his contract renewal at dinner.

The Brazilian has gone down in history as one of the finest players ever to star at Camp Nou, despite spending just a single season with the Catalan club.

In the 1996-97 campaign, Ronaldo smashed an incredible 47 goals in 49 games in all competitions, making himself an instant favourite with fans following his move from PSV in the summer of 1996.

Fast forward one year and Barcelona's board were looking forward to extending his stay, only to see Inter jump in with a world record bid of £19.5 million ($27 million) to take him to San Siro.

And, according to Gaspart, the news took everyone involved by surprise.
"Ronaldo wanted to stay at Barcelona, he was happy and his wish was to renew," the former chief, vice-president at that time, explained to Goal .
"We had even typed out the contract in front of the player himself and his two agents.
"It was three in the afternoon and we justifiably decided to go out to eat and celebrate Ronaldo's renewal, and then return to the office and sign the agreement we had reached."

While Gaspart and his colleagues were celebrating Ronaldo's new deal, however, the player's agents were secretly arranging his exit from Barcelona.

"We even toasted with cava to celebrate the agreement," Gaspart recalls.
"That was a mistake because if we had not gone out to eat and had signed at the same time we reached the agreement, Ronaldo would have stayed at Barcelona."
During the meeting, Gaspart claims that "one of his agents went off for half an hour to take a phone call", which happened to be from Inter president Massimo Moratti.
"At that time we did not pay much attention to the agent's absence. When he came back he apologised, had some coffee and toasted before going to the office to sign the contract.

"From the first moment we got to president [Josep] Nunez's office, the agents began to put obstacles up, they told Ronaldo to go home and that they would call him to sign. I asked them if they did not want to sign.
"They insisted they did but what they wanted was to renegotiate almost the entire contract, increasing the financial terms. They were trying to destroy the talks."
Even when Barca agreed to reopen discussions, it became clear that the player's agents were holding out for a San Siro switch.
"When we managed to renegotiate the five points they requested, they found a sixth part, which we also solved, and then a seventh," he stated.
"In tears, [Ronaldo] told me that he was sorry but his agents had a much better offer than ours and that it was better for all parties for him to go to another club to make much more money."

The very next day Inter deposited 4bn pesetas ($24m) in La Liga's accounts to meet Ronaldo's release clause, making him the second player after Diego Maradona to break the world transfer record twice.

Barcelona, however, were not willing to let their superstar go without a fight.
"We did not agree and I went to FIFA in Zurich to file a complaint against Inter," he said.
"The decision was taken to set up an arbitration committee to decide how much should be paid, not if the player could go to Inter, it was clear that was going to happen. FIFA agreed with Barcelona and Inter had to pay a further 400m pesetas.
"I personally told Moratti that what he did was not right because he knew we were negotiating and we had closed the operation. He has always denied knowing that we had come to an agreement but that's a lie.

"Whenever I see him I remind him that Ronaldo did not want to go to Inter, it was his agents who convinced him due to the money."

Despite Ronaldo's swift exit, Gaspart insists that the Selecao star was never happier than when he was lining up at Camp Nou – and that he almost returned five years later.

"Ronaldo told me [in 2002] that if we equalled Real Madrid's offer, he would choose Barcelona but it was a huge offer and we could not make such a big investment for a player who had left in that way," he said.

"Ronaldo's heart is more Blaugrana than Madrid because he has better memories of his time at Barcelona."

Kudos to their parents or guardians for showing them the path of dignity. And kudos to them for following that path. I pray they don't derail from it. Most times the lack of good upbringing causes most of the high rate of sexual immorality amongst our teenagers nowadays (females in particular). I knew how I was brought up by my folks, I won't trade any form of 'modernism' for that.

Francis Ewherido

After seeing the story first on the Facebook wall of my friend and egbon (senior), Dr. Osita Aniemeka, last Saturday, I read the full story on various news platforms on Sunday. An Ethiopian man reunited with his wife and two daughters after 18 years’ separation.

What caused the separation? A senseless war between Ethiopia, his country, and Eritrea, his wife’s country. What caused the war? According to The Economist, “‘Two bald men fighting over a comb’ was how one observer described the sudden eruption of war between Eritrea and Ethiopia.” A border dispute that should have been settled via dialogue, led to war, that took thousands of lives, between 1998 and year 2000.

After the war ended, the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission, a body set up by the United Nations, established that Badme , the disputed territory which precipitated the conflict, belongs to Eritrea. But Ethiopia, which was occupying this land and some other Eritrea lands, would not let go. It was only this month, 18 years after the war ended, that both parties came to their senses and signed a peace agreement on July 9. That was also when direct flights and other forms of communications were restored.

That was how, Addisalem Hadgu, a 58-year-old Ethiopian journalist, set his eyes on his wife and two daughters for the first time in 18 years. He was not alone. He was among more than 400 passengers who flew to Asmara, capital of Eritrea, two Wednesdays, ago on the first direct flight between the two countries since 1998, when the war started. There are many more families that this avoidable war tore apart.

These people, who travelled to Asmara, are just a few lucky and privileged ones. And Addisalem’s case and Ethiopia-Eritrean war are not isolated. Families were torn apart whilst the Berlin Wall separated West Germany and East Germany. Families still continue to be separated in Korea. While the leaders flex their muscles during conflicts, their families are intact, only families of ordinary people like Addisalem get separated, fragmented, decimated or destroyed.
So much water has passed under the bridge since this forced separation, but Addisalem has decided to shut his mind to the past, with so many questions begging for answers, and savour the future with his family.
Only time will tell whether or not this union will survive the effects of the separation. When spouses are separated over a long time, they tend to grow apart. Over time, they learn to live without the input and support of the other spouse. The women become head of the family and get used to the role. When the couples get back together, going back to the pre-separation roles becomes an issue.

Incidentally, last Sunday, as I was reading Addisalem’s story, I was also watching a documentary on the posthumous centenary birthday of Dr. Nelson Mandela. Mandela went to prison, leaving a young and vulnerable Winnie Mandela. By the time he came out 27 years later, he met a fiercely independent-minded Winnie Mandela, who did things her own way, sometimes ignoring the pleas of Nelson Mandela. Those 27 years apart, more than any other factor, ruined the marriage of Mandela to Winnie. I pray Addisalem’s has a happier ending.

Why this Afghanistanism (concentrating on problems in other parts of the world while ignoring the issues back home) today? I worry for the Nigerian family. Many families have lost their fathers, mothers, sons and daughters already. There is too much blood-letting in the land and not enough efforts to stem the tide. Many of the wars that tore families apart did not start as full blown wars; they started like candle lights. Egos and inability to nip them in the bud led to the conflagrations. So when you see large scale killings, sometimes with ethnic or religious colourations, you become nervous; the savagery that occurred in the former Yugoslavia flies back into memory like yesterday.

Over time politics and governance have shaped family life at macro and micro levels, so you cannot divorce the family from government matters. Nigeria needs to tread with caution. The voices of too many people and groups are being ignored and it makes me nervous. The kind of strong centre we have in Nigeria is unworkable for our diverse population. Equity, fairness and justice should mean devolving more powers to federating units so that people can have a greater say in the way they are governed. Too many people and groups currently feel alienated; Abuja seems so distant.

I have never had any doubts about the potentials of this entity called Nigeria. North West, North East, North Central, South South, South West and South East, they are visible everywhere you turn. But these potentials are being starved of nutrients and denied maturing by the kind of false federation we operate. I remain an advocate for the division of the country into strong regions. The federal government should hands off every sector, except critical sectors like security (military and police), national currency, foreign affairs and immigration, etc.

Resources within each region should be controlled by the regional government and a proportion or tax remitted to the central government. I have taken time to study the regions and there is none that cannot be self-sustaining and create more wealth for our people if those in charge simply put on their thinking cap and put the human and material resources available to them to positive use. Right now, very few seem to be thinking; the majority are contented gathering in Abuja every month to share allocation. Is that how the American system of government that we copied works?

The recently-released Brookings Institution Report said 87 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, the highest in the world. Meanwhile, India, which used to have the highest number of people living in extreme poverty in the world, has reduced its number to 73 million. More worrisome, the report says extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people per minute; that is 8640 people every day!

India has a population of about 1,324b people. Seventy three million people living in extreme poverty represents 5.5 per cent of the population. With a population of 198m people, our 87 million represents 44 per cent of Nigerians living in extreme poverty! We are talking of extreme poverty here, not just poverty, because Nigerians who live on less than two US dollars a day are way above half of our population. By the time you go to the urban slums, villages and the hinterland, you will realize that these are not just statistics, but real people… families, husbands, wives and children.

I have spent time in India and saw the crushing poverty first hand. To realise that more people are in such a situation in my country makes me miserable and I partly blame our system of government for the increasing poverty. The time to restructure is now; we need to take as many Nigerians as possible out of poverty and restructuring is one of the ways to do it.

FamilyNaturally Determining The Sex Of Your Babies - By Francis Ewherido by Feranchek(op): 2:31pm On Jul 14, 2018
Naturally determining the sex of your babies – Francis Ewherido

Let me commence with a solemn declaration. I believe, without any doubt, that all humankind is created equal and in the image and likeness of God. No person is superior to the other by virtue of family background, race, ethnicity or gender.

So today’s article has nothing to do with the superiority of the male child over the female child. There is no such thing, or maybe it exists in the imagination of some people due to prehistoric and archaic prejudices. We need both sexes to perpetuate humanity, so both are equally important.

Put these male chauvinists making noise about the supremacy of the male child in an island without women for one year and they will run mad. I am only writing today’s article because God has given us the freedom of choice and if anybody has challenges exercising that freedom positively and you are in a position to help, please do just that.

Last week’s article, “Nigeria’s exponential Population” did generate much reaction on my social media pages. But one of the reasons given by a respondent for the exploding population did catch my attention. He said some couples give birth to more children than they originally planned or can cater for because they are looking for the “almighty” male child. This does not make sense to me, but a man has the right to make legal choices that make him happy. I have written considerably on this subject and will not duel on it wholesome today, but I will concentrate on naturally determining the sex of your baby.

Naturally preselecting the sex of your baby is no rocket science; it is the simple biology we all learnt in secondary school. Maybe, we just take it a little further. So it is painful to see couples unfulfilled, sad or breed like rabbits because they are looking for either a son or daughter, son most of the time. Today, I am giving an abridged version of steps (previously addressed in my column) that you need to take to naturally preselect the sex of your baby with stunning accuracy.

First, we must remember or know that the male sperms carry either X or Y chromosomes, while the female eggs carry only the X chromosomes. The egg carrying the X chromosome and the sperm carrying Y chromosome produce a male child, while the egg carrying the X chromosome and the sperm carrying X chromosome produce a female child. So a man determines the sex of a baby. You can now see that many husbands are just blaming their wives for results that they are wholly responsible for.

The sperm carrying the Y chromosome swims faster, but has a shorter lifespan while the sperm carrying the X chromosome is slower, but has a longer lifespan. If you want a male child, intercourse should take place just before or during ovulation. The faster sperms carrying the Y chromosome would get to the egg and fertilise it before the sperms with X chromosome make their slow and steady journey there. And only one sperm can fertilise an egg. If, however, intercourse takes three days (sometimes two days) or more before ovulation, the result will likely be a girl. This is because all the faster sperms carrying the Y chromosomes with short lifespan would have died leaving the egg for the slower sperms carrying the X chromosomes with longer lifespan to fertilise.

The critical elements here are ovulation, which occurs when an egg or ovum is released from the ovary and usually lasts for about 12 to 24 hours, and timing of intercourse. Ovulation normally occurs between the 12th to 14th day of a woman’s 28-day cycle, but like most human phenomena, there are no absolute certainties and it varies from one woman to another. Even within the same woman, there are variations. Many women find this unpredictability challenging. Such women can engage in charting, that is daily recording of changes in the mucus discharge from the vagina that is related to ovulation, to enhance predictability.

Please note that how long the sperm lives in the body of your wife after intercourse is determined by a number of factors. One, the vaginal environment is very important. If it is alkaline, the sperm carrying the Y chromosome can survive up to three day, while the sperm carrying the X chromosome can survive for five or six days. But if the vaginal environment is acidic, it is less habitable for the X and Y sperms and they die much earlier. That is why knowing the day of ovulation is very essential to pre-selection of the sex of your baby, because if you do, the vaginal environment, friendly or hostile, becomes inconsequential.

The other important factor is the health of the husband’s sperms. Studies have shown that the sperms of men decline both in quality and quantity from age 40. It is earlier for smokers. Lifestyle and the type of food you eat also influence the quantity and quality of sperms and ability to impregnate your wife. In fact, the egg does not accept every sperm that comes its way. It is very selective and attracted more to healthy sperms. This can be a challenge for men with weak sperms or low sperm count when they want to impregnate their wives, according to research findings.

You also need some discipline and cooperation between spouses if you want to naturally pre-select the sex of your babies. For a start, pre-selection is easier when the woman is practising natural family planning as against the use of artificial contraceptives, because artificial contraceptives disrupt the cycle of women, stopping ovulation or making ovulation more unpredictable, and you do need some level of predictability in the ovulation cycle to naturally preselect the sex of your babies

In addition, the couple needs to stay off intercourse for at least five days before ovulation. This is to ensure that residue semen in the woman’s body does not interfere with her vaginal discharge and create confusion. There are a number of natural ways women know they are ovulating: the thick slimy vaginal discharge which is like phlegm (catarrh, as some refer to it), some women feel a sharp pain on the side or lower abdomen when the egg is released, heightened sense of smell, breast soreness or tenderness, increased sexual urge and change in body temperature..
Just in case you are wondering why I write categorically on the efficacy of this method, I used it to preselect the sex of all my children, boys and girls accurately, so I know it is effective

Good one. Unfortunately, we didn't get to know when
lalekanyinusa:
participants have been drawn from far and near throughout the Nigerian nation.
But it's all good.

I keep saying it that most wealthy churches (including the Catholic Church) should STOP building churches! The expansion is enough!!! Let them focus on youth empowerment. And as a matter of fact, it's a WIN-WIN. Imagine a church having a sort of training centre for skill acquisition and they train youths on computer computer related courses (cos the world has gone digital) and some some other programmes like tailoring, makeup artist and gele tying, hairdressing, barbing, catering and other RELEVANT skills, and after their training, you already have jobs for them i.e, shops have already been equipped for them to practice their skills. And who's the owner of these shops? The church!!!! They can decide to pay them lesser salaries for a year (to recover what has been invested in them), and after that year, they pay them their full salaries. Such agreement will be clearly stated in the application form and signed by a reputable Referee. The profit from these shops goes to the church, and they can decide to do more youth investment.

By the way, these churches needn't start with ALL those skills I've mentioned above, but computer should be constant.

But instead of these wealthy churches to carryout such investments on youths, you'll see them organising useless seminars on one rubbish or the other: How to safe money, how to profit from online business. And the even more useless ones: How to make beads, soap making, bread making, how to make hand wash, how to make puff puff... you name it!

Hopefully, they'll see that the church can effectively help the community through such programmes.
