Messi is a talented and amazing player but that is not all. He is also portrayed by the media as a humble, cool headed player that deserves everything because of his personality even when his efforts doesn't necessarily deserve that particular recognition. Ronaldo on the other hand is seen as an arrogant, selfish and immature individual. He has to work his ass out for everything he gets, and also have to deal with how people perceive his personality.
They both have a huge section of fans, but when it comes to voting for prestigious awards, fans don't vote. Some selected individuals do, which I have noticed that Messi have triumphed more in this area because he is liked better. Ronaldo gets to win only when Messi is having a bad year.
Rodri triumphed over Vini because a set of people liked him better than the Brazilian even when the latter has more fans and supporters.
In this life, sometimes hard work will not always get you want you want especially when they are people to decide your fate.
