I mixed 2mm and 3mm together, the feed is aqualis
In my opinion, this is not right in the first instance...secondly, we must understand that their are no precise size for all feeds sizes either floating or sinking...very unfortunate....some 2mm are others 3mm and can also be 1.5mm of another feed brand.....
The bottom line is are those fishes juveniles yet....any standard juveniles will pick 2mm conveniently..lastly, can you tell the brand of feed and a pic of your juveniles

Good day all pls can u kindly help me on how n what is used for d treatment of earthing pond prior 2 stocking am new to fish farming
Liming and fertilization has been proven to be the best but I will re-emphasize...earthen is a dynamic system cos it has to do with the land soil formation....
If you are not experience in catfish farming.....try starting with plastic or tarpaulin....water may be your greatest challenge but is best you learn first.....

snnaija:
do catfish eat boiled white rice and secondly what causes excess foaming like bubbles on fish pond?
Catfish will eat almost anything in water but its not worth it giving them boiled rice.....
Foaming is inadequate dissolved oxygen and it occurs mostly when you pack them in a chocked space...other foaming might be as a result of feed introduced....
Bubbles are mostly sign of perspiration in demand for food....it potents no great danger, once seen...feed your fish a little more

First, dont be discouraged....you probably had not done more research on marketing and sales....their are few methods of sales....pampa, kilo, bundle, etc....
You should have found out which is obtainable in your location and pricing....
Secondly, if you understand how well to manage it after your first cut...if they actualy cut well...you are likely every three weeks to reharvest much more till you decide to leave it for pod development or strictly leaves..,
All the best.
AgricultureRe: Challenges Of Agric Start-ups And New Farmers. by Fish4wealth: 8:25pm On Oct 10, 2017
bamiwale:
To me, one of the most common huddles I found among new farmers is lack of knowledge of agriculture. A lot of new farmers go into the business with the mindset of profit making arising from some analysis they read online. However, some of these online get-rich quickly analysis are written by e-marketers and pen farmers who have no practical experience with farming. Many have followed them to failure.

My advice: get a mentor in whatever field of Agric you plan to go into. Someone that has walked the rope. If you start your own enterprise close to the location of such mentor you, you have increased your chances of success in great bounds. If not, close the gap by constant communication.

I want to invite the dons of the Agriculture section to kindly make contributions to this thread. Let's gain some more from you.
FarmTech, Pavore9, jamp, legsupnigeria, robonski15, organicfoods, jasper7, world1, hotmas911(chief landlord), Yeecar, sedulus, MANGAM, ogbongenet, Farmafric, jethro2, and all the ogas of the agric section.
Have you ever wondered why some students fails and otherss will pass under same atmosphere....simple....those who pass take it more seriously.....
My first question.....how many young aspiring agropreneurs can name one mentor he/she seriously worked closely with to tap from such mentor's wealth of experience......what we have are online aspiring agropreneurs who are still de-illusioned...

Their is a greater role of the government ranging from people friendly policies, realistic farming environment, assesibilty to agric funds, local and international market windows, well developed and technologically tailored research, etc

Youth of the 21st century must understand the fast changing economic space that abounds hence the need to come to terms with their passion. Why is agriculture taken as an alternative source of income and not primary source of income....we must change our orientation

I'm open to mentoring any serious minded youths who sees agriculture as a good means of livelihood and ready to engage in developing the agric sector....buzz me on 081...537..016..13....check my signature

Hello..so i just recently completed the digging of my ponds and i intend to stock soon. Please, How do i treat the ponds in preparation for stocking?? Someone advised hydrated lime while another advised formalin.. Which way out, please?
My first reaction...can you manage an earthen pond...how experience are you....
Second, how many fish are you stocking and what stage....
Third....their are many geological consideration in earthen pond unlike others...especially with respect to soil......that soil looks silty to me...not sure though...it may have implications on fish sight...however, if you must treat your earthen pond, I will suggest....poultry droppings and liming..I wonder why the use of formalin....I can't just understand who keeps suggesting this......

alright...but I don't think stocking up feeds like this is advisable and secondly I bought my fingerlings at 15 naira, anyways I just hope that I make it at the end
I haven't even stocked a ton.....their is no harm in stocking all that you may need per production provided you are aware of the expiration and if locally formulated, ensure to have it right.
First, it saves you from cummulative transport fair and second, prices of feeds are not stable....

chilanfarms:
how can u buy a fingerlings and still give them 1mm and 1.5mm aqualis feed? The person dt sell such wicked small. Fingerlings of that size shouldn't more than 9/10. For u to feed fingerlings to juveniles alone u will spend @ least #3 per fish.
I just hope @snnaija aprc8 our concerns and not see it personal...contributors to your scenario are no doubt experience catfish farmers sharing their experiences freely for your success....just note all the contributions so far and do the right thing....I do not think anyone of us so far has personal interest order than your success in this first project of yours.
You started far too big, irrespective of your financial status. Learn to start small and seek professional advice.
Good luck!

These are another batches of my feed for the next stock, 2000pcs fingerlings. The feed below is #180, 000.. first batch....
Without considering mortality yet...it simply means, at exhaustion, each fish would have been fed #90/fish.
The truth is whoever recommended 5000pcs of fingerlings to you and gave you that feeding formular simply did so to sell seedlings. And was scared to give the actual average operational cost.
Such simply act on the fact that 5000 fingerlings at #10 is just #50, 000....

you're wrong...am in my 3rd month now and my calculation hasn't failed me yet
Great farmers...we are opportune has farmers to learn from one another....@snnaija....its impracticable to use one bag of fish feed to feed 5000 fishes in one month for fingerlings..not even fries...and a 15kg bag at that.....hmmmmm.....you are simply implying that you have spent #1.4k per fish....
I said it hear few threads above that your unit cost of production should be between #400 and above...I was misunderstood....no wahala....seeing is believing.....except if you have mastered the techniques.....

Yes...big congratulation...I love actions than mere procrastination.....I wonder why we expect to know all before venturing....indeed no crime to do such but its never a proven step to learn all. Agribusiness/ farming is a game of risk but with consistent practice and calculative dive...you are sure to learn the rope to success.
Note...different types of ponds have their merits and demerits but I would advise you pay more attention to the ones in the earthen ponds cos of your inexperience....I hope you diked it well and secured it from reptiles and collapse....I hope it has enough water table and not depending on the little rains left....how do you intend to sort themhuh and many more....
Getting it right from day matters a lot....what's your budget per fish....what market are you targetting. ?...seeking for shoulder to lean us.....chat me up...081...53..70...161..3

This estimate is way overboard...
You are right...little over estimated.....I spent between #300-#350 cos I change to my local formulation after two months of floating feed....
We must realise that in fish biz or any of such with price flunctuation...one must over budget...the truth is many newbies are told an estimate of #250-#300 with the hope of selling at #750-#800/kg giving them a profit margin of over 200%...they rushed in without understanding the intriques of feeding.....
Note, some imported feed are as high as #12, 000 which are always recommended to newbies...
My position is, budget high to leave no excuse....your record will prove otherwise...
I look forward to read from the gurus their cost of unit production.....

How much can i budget to raise a fingerling to maturity(5 to 6 month)
Budget between #400-#550 per fish only on feeding...depending on your experience...+ or -..imported or local, stock density, system method( flow through or others), etc
Others may share their unit cost of production
