missylizzy:
Just came across this thread and its been educative, if I had known I wouldn't have dashed 250k to a so called pastor in the name that he had experience and he will help me setup my pond, he brought people that did a bad job with the construction of the pond, especially the drainage system, my pond doesn't completely drain out.... Apart from that I noticed some juvenile runts were sold to me.... I also paid for feed, what was given to me was Top Feed, I guess its a local feed, the fish is doing well, I would like to connect with some farmers, any farmer around ikorodu, agric to be precise so that we can connect and share some idea
Welcome to the club....mine farm location is ogudu...if you need further enquiries on your farm management to profit..leave your comments here or chat me on 0815-370-1613
Top feed is locally made, it floats, cheaper with good fcr....lets promote ours....

Good day all and happy sunday....it still baffles me when people thinks farming is not profitable....I said repeatedly that Nigeria population is more of a blessing than a curse.....
Nigeria is indeed a big market, going round sunday market today in ogba agege, Lagos...it was amazing seeing the Asian dominating the market....where are Nigerians....huh?
I posted on all my group requesting for anyone with melange.....no one so far....it simply implies we are all out of stock (demand) or we are just online farmers....

Good morning all and thank God for another great weekend.
Our desire to share our experiences and opportunities in catfish farming is motivated by the singular fact that irrespective of the state of the nation, many desired to venture into at least a business as a secondary source of income but are in dillema of which.
No doubt, their are bountiful opportunities in almost all the Nigeria sector of the economy but the agric sector seems to be amongst the TOP three.
Our hope is to provide a platform for both new and existing catfish farmers to harness the diverse opportunities that exist in catfish farming.
Is catfish business profitablehuh?
Are their local and international market for ithuh??
What is the least capital to start withhuh?
And many more.........
No doubt, their has been many thread on catfish farming but we hope to introduce our unique concept...
Discussion starts next week Monday....

Masters in the house I need all the help I can get.My 3 weeks old juveniles are dying.i ve done all I know(not experienced tho).a bit whitish change in physical appearance, like 60% are hanging vertically on d surface of water,
WOT I VE DONE ...I stopped feeding, drained the water and filled tank to normal level. the next day I noticed no improvment, and I started treatment.I drain the water daily, then with little water I use salt solution, keproceryl and floxinor, wait for 30mins, then I run fresh water on them till 1/4 tank. I use tarpaulin, 10by 10by 3, 750fish. I use skrettin 1.8mm,they had very rapid growth for a start. pls save me o...am so discouraged now.
They are turning whitish..,.did you treat your tarpaulin before use....
What type of tarpaulin, self constructed or fixed...
Your water pH, salinity.....
Any indication maybe a substance dissolved in their previous water which may have infect on their system

Good evening to d house and all d gurus here.. I will like to say a big thank u to d gurus and err 1 here for d vision to start catfish farming. . I stocked 800pcs 6weeks old juveniles in a 13ft by 7ft by 4ft on sunday 27th and started feeding 28th of dis month I am feeding with skretting feeds 1.5mm ..
my observations are:
1, d juveniles seem to like picking feed from d bottom though dia is always an initial rush wen pouring in d feed but wen d rush reduces dey eat d one @ d bottom and leave d 1nce floating (thus causing water pollution)
2, D fish r growing and doing fine
3,dey seem to know dia feeding point cos , as long as d place is quiet and I tap my feet on d ground dey all come rushing to that point
4, I treated dem with aqua flash and aqua cure for 5 days
Welcome to the great club.....yes at that stage they act more as bottom feeders cos the feed is still more of concentrates which doesn't float....endeavour not to feed too much so they can stay afloat to eat almost all before it sinks...
For treatment...except on incidence...good quality water is just OK to avoid complication....
All the best.
5, to all d gurus and fellow fish farmer all observations and recommendations r welcomed. . Tanx

AgricultureRe: Sale Of Life Catfish Vs Processed (smoked) Which Is More Profitable by Fish4wealth: 9:00pm On Aug 21, 2017
Its becoming increasingly difficult recently for fresh fish of 1kg to be sold at good price...e.g...at least #750/kg. And sadly, many of us aren't sharing factual price info....can't blame anyone though....
No doubt about it, smoke fish commands better value than fresh..,but just with the saying both have their merits and demerits....

Copied from another group::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Hello fellow farmers.
It is my pleasure to share with you my recent experience with fish fraudulent buyers.
We had table size fish for sell, so I told my farm manager to make some few calls.
This particular bulk buyer had patronised us some few months ago.
When he eventually came, he bought from two of my ponds.
The sells ( kgs and no of fish) was worrisome. By my calculation we should realised more than what he paid for it.
He came again the second time, this time the manager was prepared(the manager already weighed a sample size average weight was 1kg).
Apparently 25 of the fishes should weigh 25kg but it was ranging between 18and 20kg. This raised suspicion and argument ensured. He left in anger haven realised he was being exposed.
My farm manager decided to check the scale for any foreign substances. He opened the scale, behold there was a tied particle board under the spring. This was a force holding the spring from moving pass 20kg. Any addition fish is not accounted for. The quantity that should give you 50kg will be reading 20kg.
From the initial sale to this fraudulent man, l lost about 150,000.
Farmers be warned. Some uses magnet.

1.on no account should the enter your pond.
2.they must not toubch your scale (this scenario was because they touch the scale. By evil invocation that item was transferred into the scale)
3. Scale your fish ready for sale. By this you already know your kgs
4. Get enough assistance. They can watch the buyers very closely
These people can run your business down.
Be vigilant. Good luck farmers.

The name of the man his Segun. Nos. 08068291816, 09058599322
He will bring a vehicle and tell you he buys as much as 800kg and above
Have also been a big victim of this, that I lost over 250 to 300 thousand cos he brought 300kg from me and the last time he came by then I have my own new scale,I allowed him scale his first 50kg and when I rescale his 50kg I was getting 96kg which I was confused and even went to another farm to get scale and it was still d same as 96kg
Buy a digital scale, its almost impossible to manoeuvre. Any fish buyer that refuses to use it is a thief.

My piece of advice, just bring out samples of your different sizes or the very size you intend to sell....insist the farm policy does not permit non staff into the pond. Never make mistake of using any of their materials for weighing...decide prior to their coming if you would allow sorting or not or better still, sort in advance

Good day my fellow agropreneurs.

Please I want to embark into selling of dried catfish. Please I need guidelines on how to go about it.

Do I have to buy and smoke by myself or is there smoked ones I can buy and then sell.
And how much are they been sold.

Thanks in anticipation and every idea and suggestions will be appreciated

@petimonde....i read your thread and curious to know if your sales outweighed your cost of production. I did an assumed calculation based on your info of 33bags against 500 fishes to get approx #420/fish....I hope most are weighing 850g and abovehuh?
I will like to provide analysis assistance with respect to sales....or contact me on 08153701613....
