MASTERING A NICHE IN CATFISH FARMING Are you desirous of venturing into catfish farming but still very unsure how and where to start. Just as it is important to find out about a car before buying in terms of fuel efficiency, spare parts availability, cost of maintenance and second hand value to list few... Same applies to catfish farming. Catfish farming offers a range of specializations however the following are top-most *Breeding(fries production) *Rearing(Nuturing fries to different other growth stages) Other areas are *Value addition(processing, smoking, filleting, etc) *Fish feeds production Interestingly, any of the above area of specialization is viable and profitable, provided the right knowledge and skills are deployed. However, I like to introduce the area of VALUE ADDITION commonly known as smoking/processing. Interesting thing about catfish processing/smoking is that, you need not to directly engage in the technical aspect, rather, you can contract it out. Harness an additional stream of income through CATFISH BUSINESS.... For professional, quality and affordable processing/smoking services/training... Chat.... 0-7-0-8-8-6-2-8-4-8-4

MaliEmpire:Good to read from you. I like to encourage you to believe it's doable. Many believed that it's a waste of time selling directly to consumers. My simple reaction is if consumer can buy from the market women, why can't they buy from farmers ...?? Simple truth is many farmers aren't ready to secure their market and equally lacks the tenacity and market dominance of the market women. |
Are you a catfish farmer.. Then join the advocacy for price harmonization.... Good morning all and happy Saturday to all great catfish farmers here. First let me say that to the best of my knowledge, catfish farming industry seems to be the most disunited and un-regulated industry. We are at the mercy of feed sellers and fish buyers while we are the producers that ought to set the price. Like they say, customer is the king but our king to feed producers. If we cannot dictate neither negotiate feed price, how could the fish buyer dictate our price rather than negotiate Second, our disunity, lack of regulation and self centeredness has really made us prone unlike other industry such as poultry, bakery, pure water to mention but few. The truth is how many of us are members of a registered association or cooperative or groups playing active role? Until we form a formidable cluster group, association or cooperative within our locality, only the strong will continue to sustain catfish business. Sadly, many have resulted to alternative feeds that does not meet health standard when we have the power to effect change. My position is that catfish farming should be regulated just as its applicable in tailoring, vulganizer, etc.. However few in our locality, let's come together to form a formidable cluster group and hold the market. Who says we cannot sell directly to consumers in large quantities. If the market women and middle can, we can too. God bless catfish farmers #Agrowealth |

Smartb0y:Why do men blame women for loosing their virginity..can a woman of her own disvirgin herself?? Why do men play the blame game here as if we are not the one that cunningly and wittingly and worse scenario forcefully take away these treasures many good ladies have vowed to keep. I still ask myself why men who takes away a ladies virginity out of mutual consent isn't so punish..... |
HOW TO IDENTIFY SCAMMERS IN CATFISH FARMING My responds to a group misleading post A MONTH AND 23DAYS FROM FINGERLINGS (ONLY PICTURE) "my fish are bigger than these within a week.. Lol" He has simply answered the author ironically cos I presume he is a professional catfish farmer and he knows this is just nothing but a deception.. Many times I ignore to read this kind of misleading post but for the sake of the newbies who may fall PREY of these pre-motivated mischievous and heartless individuals who are bent in defrauding in disguise and tarnishing the hardwork of real catfish farmers and prosperity of the catfish industry, I'm seldomly persuaded to react. It's a simple thing to know such mischievous posts.. Simply ask them the following : 1. what was the grammage of their fingerlings/juveniles at the point of stoking? 2. What was the quantity? 3. What type of ponds, size and how many? 4. What quantity of feed do they consume per day? 5. What quantity of feeds have they consume till date? Let me stop here... Do not blame the industry or anyone else apart of the scammer and your greedy naive self..... Great farmer, Great nation... |
As much as I love the comment above me "learning"...this is very key..and sadly that learning is missing in the catfish farming industry. Many newbies simply wants to get as much info online hoping it's comparable to practical learning... Howbeit, I will not second learning from the market women cos they are the major sales challenge of many catfish farmers. What you need to know... *How do to they buy catfish....in kg or unit? *How/where can you get regular supply..?? * How do they transport live catfish..?? *How can you manage them during sales and those not sold *Who will be your own buyers?? *How would you sell? *What sales outlet are you adopting?? These and many more are vital questions you need to get practical answers on.... Best of luck |
It is good to know that funding is key in running any venture or business but the big question is the ability of many entrepreneurs and catfish players in particular to defend the usage of such funding convincingly. Of a truth we have an astronomical rise in the price of feeds and raw materials, nevertheless, can our financial plan justify the viability and profitability of such venture or farming. Join the catfishnetwork and let's farm professionally to attract needed funding. |
kennethfranc:Nairaland has rules... I'm not sure if the link was not allowed to be accessible hence the email. I do not want to be ban for breaking nairaland rules..a platform that has offered many entrepreneurs a platform to network. I've received a number of compliance from few catfish members on nairaland and I'm impressed so far, hence, if interested kindly follow the alternative "protocol". Thanks |

Its so amazing how market women and fish mongers has a very strong affinity and united voice to dictate and determine the price a fish farmer should benchmark his/her fish not minding the high cost of feeds and electricity tariff.... Sadly, we the major players have in decades find it difficult to synergize and collaborate to have a formidable and united voice. I'm therefore calling like minds to come onboard to discuss issues affecting our industry while proffering workable solutions. |

The hike in the prices of foodstuffs is becoming a worrisome issues as farming and agriculture generally has not been given the needed attention. Recently, the aquaculture sub-sector witnessed over 30% increase in the prices of fish feeds and other raw-materials. Many fish farms are folding up while others have reduced the stocking capacity due to ranging challenges. Sadly and more painful is the exploitation of fish farmers by fish mongers... Are you a practicing/intending catfish farmer... Let's make a change in the catfish farming. https:///CatfishNetwork |

For how long will the Nigerian people be liberated from the internal financial terrorism adopted by banks to swindle us to penury. Just to mention the very obvious few.. Once a transfer is initiated, the banks claims to deduct #10.56k-#53.66k depending on banks and the amount transferred. But really, their are hidden deductions that only an account holder who monitors his/her previous balance will discover such hidden corrupt practices.. Yet the banks will declare huge net profit yearly. Just yesterday after so much tuzzle between the banks and the telcos on the use of USSD.... the banks position and unanimous decision was to transfer their debts on their customers to now be paying #6.98k on every transaction....but exempted such deductions on purchase of recharge cards.. God whyyyyyyy..... This really shows the extent the elites and the so-called government will go to milk the poor Nigerians who struggles daily to survive on a dollar. Fellow Nigerians, let's ride up in prayer to God to save us from internal slavery.... It is oh mother Nigeria!!!!! |
Catfish farming like any other livestock farming has its share of risks/challenges hence having a knowledge of such risks is pivotal in decision making. Like you rightly said, you've "learnt about catfish value chains" good! Compare and contrast (production or trading).... Critical to any business is SALES... meaning, if you choose production, you need to factor all the costs and I can tell you for free, #300k-#500k wouldn't be enough..... Need free counselling check out my facebook page agrohubcoop1 for one on one counselling. Wish you the very best as you explore all available options |

This will be a long awaited achievement from the most recognised catfish farmers association. But why are there no concentrates, 2mm and 3mm sizes which are critical size at the starting phase? Howbeit, we need more information about the distribution of the feed for us to test run it. |
