caukerzee: just shut up if u have nothing educative to say. I stay in plateau and most of the news about killings are media propagated. The city of jos is as much a war zone as any other southern city at present. What are you saying? You sound like a daft |
Demdem: Because Obj did it doesn't make it right. Probably this should be tested in a court of law.A state of emergency is a governmental declaration that may suspend some normal functions of the executive, legislative and judicial powers, alert citizens to change their normal behaviours. It can be used as a rationale for suspending rights and freedoms, even if guaranteed under the Constitution. Such declaration usually comes during a time of natural or man-made disasters, during periods of civil unrest or following a declaration of war or situation of international or internal armed conflict. |
Plateau state still remain war zone up till date, despite the state of emergency declared in 2004 |
Noblechyk: then, u don't know wat state of emergency is all about as there is fixed way to it. D only difference here is d management of d state resources which is better in d hand of a civillian than a military. It's so dangerous for military to total control of a state under dis circumstance let alone 3 states. However, the reason for SOS 'll stil b achieved with d retianing of d state governors. Imagine where a soldier inside d government house or in d governor's security details won't take orders from d governor. Does dat make any sense to u?@bold Borno, yobe, kano, adamawa has always being on lock-down, searching, cordon off of areas before now. JTF has killed many boko-haram top commanders, they have destroyed a lot of their hide-out, they have seize a lot of weapons before now. Did they take the order from the governor? Line 15 of the president speech, does it make any sense to you? 15.The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political office holders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities. |
Jona never declared state of emergency to me, he only increase the number of JTF army in those state. While the governor and the politicians still take charge |
The Yobe state Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has thrown his weight behind the imposition of state of emergency in the state by President Good luck Jonathan A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor onMedia and Information, Abdullahi Bego, said the Governor agrees with Mr President on the imposition of state of emergency in the state as there is no alternative to peace.http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/05/14/yobe-governor-supports-emergency-rule/ |
15.The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political office holders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities. .The bolded got me confused how would a state governor discharge his constitutional responsibilities and you said you declared state of emergency in the state. The state governor still remain the chief security officer of the state.BTW the JTF has been searching, locking-down area suspected to be terrorist hide-out before now, with the state governor discharging their duty. I tire for this kind of leader |
What kind of state of emergency is this? When he still ask the chief security officer of the state i.e the governors to remain their. JTF are their in borno, yobe, and others state, with the state governors before Now taking charge, What happen? This guy is just fooling nigerians, he want to act as if he is incharge. |
BY EGUFE YAFUGBORHI PORT HARCOURT — PREGNANT Florence Onu, 28, was shot dead, Sunday night, in Port Harcourt by armed men who attacked her along Ada George Road, Rumueme. Younger sister to the victim, Ebere Amadi, who witnessed the incident said her sister had a scuffle with the robbers over herhandbag containing N50,000 offerings collected during her church’s evening service that day. She said: “We were returning from church service around 8 p.m when we saw a red Audi coming close to us. Next thing, one of them grabbed my sister’s bag. There was dragging as my sister held to the bag. One of them at the back of the vehicle shot my sister as they made away with the bag. She was already dead before we got to a nearby hospital. “The N50,000 in her bag was the offering from the evening service. The pastor asked her to take it home because her husband who is responsible for keeping the church’s money was not in the service that day.” Alex Chidah, a youth leader in the area while reacting to the incident said: “Ada-George Road has become volatile lately. The police need to take note. There is a particular gang parading the area only at night and they have been molestingand killing innocent residents.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/bandits-kill-pregnant-woman-over-church-offering/ |

Facts emerged today that no fewer than four police officers are still being held hostage by members of the Ombatse militia group in Alakyo, Eggon area of Nasarawa state. The group had in an ambush against a combined team of police, SSS and Civil Defence men detailed to raid their shrine last Tuesday killed about 100 of the security agents. As a result, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar who was on a visit to the state today declared that instead of engaging the brutal religious group in another bloody clash, the federal government has opted to dialogue with the militia with a view to freeing the police officers still being held by the group The IGP was in the state in the company of the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade and the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone IV, Mr. Mike Zukumor. They arrived Lafia, the state capital aboard a police chopper.“We are making every peaceful effort to ensure that some of our men still being held hostage are released unhurt”, the IGP noted, adding that there was an ongoing dialogue both inthe state and at other quarters with the Ombatse group on how to secure the release of the captured policemen. The state governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura in his remarks also confirmed the negotiation with the militia group. According to him “the compounding issue is that the place is still insecure. It is not to say we can’t go there. We are trying to get anyone still alive there. We heard up to four men are still being held, but the police are working hard to free them.” http://ireports-ng.com/2013/05/11/fg-opens-negotiation-with-nasarawa-militia-group-over-police-officers-still-held-in-their-shrine/ |

Ten policemen who survived Tuesday’s onslaught fromthe Ombatse militia group in Nasarawa State have attributed their survival to luck. Narrating their escape, one of the police officers who spoke on behalf of nine other survivors (names withheld) said their survival was only by the grace of God as they were outnumbered and overpowered by the militiamen. He also disclosed that the militiamen had prior knowledge of their coming and laid siege on the narrow road leading to the village, Alakyo, where they were supposed to effect the arrest of their leader and recover arms said to be in his possession. He said, “The road is narrow and they allowed us into their midst before opening fire on us at close range.” Efforts to return fire and scare them into hiding ware futile as bullets were not penetrating them, he said. The police officer, who spoke exclusively to LEADERSHIP on condition of anonymity, added that themilitiamen, dressed in black shirts and caps, kept approaching amidst heavy gunfire, which forced their Hilux van, the last van on the convoy, to turn back. “Due to the nature of the road and ensuing gun duel, our men could not turn back and 10 of us in our van were able to manoeuvre our way out but not without suffering bullet wounds,” he said. The recuperating officer added that the driver of their van was shot on the leg but, luckily enough, one of them with him in front could drive and immediately took over. Many of the officers took to the bush but hugely outnumbered by the militiamen who knew the terrain better, they were pursued and killed. “As soon as they killed an officer, his rifle was taken off him.” Meanwhile, the pervading atmosphere in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, is that of fear, anxiety and hope as the families of the slain policemen converged on the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) to identify their loved ones most of whom had been burntbeyond recognition. Also speaking on condition of anonymity, an official of the Red Cross Society, who went to evacuate the remains of the victims, said the militiamen, who gave the condition that no armed security officer should accompany the Red Cross officials, were still keeping close guard in the village, seized their phones on entryand returned them after the evacuation. He, however, noted that the villagers were going abouttheir businesses, saying they did not know those who carried out the dastardly act since they were not members of their community. He further claimed that the slain police officers were gathered in heaps and set ablaze by the militiamen. ...... http://leadership.ng/news/100513/nasarawa-bloodbath-how-we-survived-ambush-militiamen-survivors

Former first lady Hajiya Turai Yar ’Adua has stated that Nigeria would have been a different country today if her husband had not died. Speaking during a memorial lecture organised by students of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), Katsina , Turai extolled the virtues of the late president .“If Umaru were alive, the history of Nigeria would have been different because he had focus,” she said in an emotion-laden voice. Turai said even though the late president had health challenges while serving as president , “he gave his best for Nigeria ” and “ Umaru was a very honest man”. According to her, “the late Umaru always said, ‘I am here to serve, not to make money. I am here to leave alegacy for you, not property’.” Turai, who lauded the organisers of the memorial lecture, said she was happy to be in their midst because the event was commemorating someone she loved dearly, adding that “each time there is an occasion in memory of Umaru , I must be there no matter how small the organisers are”. She decried the low turnout at the lecture but said, “I will not blame them because they have other commitments… Umaru believed in commitments and gave his best in everything he did.” The memorial lecture was organised as part of activities to mark the 2013 edition of UMYU’s Student Union Government Week http://leadership.ng/news/080513/nigeria-would-have-been-different-under-yar-adua-turai

BY Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, S-South & Akpokona Omafuaire WARRI—South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, Tuesday, lashed out at Minister of Niger Delta, Elder Godsday Orubebe, accusing him of disobeying and embarrassing President Goodluck Jonathan with his bloated ambition to take over from Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State in 2015. Chief Clark was peeved that the minister, whose nomination he fought for against all odds, had forgotten so soon, adding that even if Ijaws in Delta State were asked to produce a gubernatorial candidate, “It will not be Mr. Orubebe and he is fully aware of that.” Delta Speaker He also spoke on the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei, who is eyeing the governorship seat in 2015, saying: “I wish to advise Orubebe and Ochei to give peace a chance and not use their positions to intimidate and cause confusion among the people.” The elder statesman, who returned from the United Kingdom, recently, was, however, more particular about Orubebe, saying that his attention was drawn to comments made by the minister that he was going to contest the 2015 gubernatorial elections in the state because it was the turn of Ijaw ethnic nationality to do so. Noting that President Jonathan had categorically directed that“none of his ministers and government functionaries should engage in politics as to declaring their intentions or supporting anyone for elective position, including Senatorial, House of Representatives or gubernatorial,” he said he was taken aback when he received text messages on Orubebe’s declaration. He said: “Mr. Orubebe cannot claim ignorance of Mr. President’s directive. His flagrant disobedience is no doubt an embarrassment to Mr. President, to the leaders of the party and the party faithful, particularly to me who everybody believes contributed greatly to his becoming a Minister having regard to the opposition from the former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibor and his supporters against me. “However, I did not believe that Mr. Orubebe made such declaration until my return to Warri on May 2, 2013. I was not only besieged by party members on the alleged statement by Mr. Orubebe at Ovu town, when he paid a condolence visit to the family of late Alam Barovbe. Three members, who were present testified to the fact that Mr. Orubebe made such statement in Ovu. This was also confirmed by a prominent party leader in Delta state, Chief Bernard Edewor, who said he replied to the speech made by Mr. Orubebe. “Our opponents and detractors are definitely cashing in on Orubebe’s careless and irresponsible statement and are now using it to insult Mr. President, the Ijaws and even myself, that the President and I, are definitely behind him. I had tried to disabuse the minds of people and denied that neither Mr. President nor I was aware of Mr. Orubebe’s statement. The calls to my telephone have not stopped, hence my decision toaddress the people of Delta State. “Perhaps, Mr. Orubebe has also forgotten how I accompanied him to the State House in Abuja after his confirmation at the Senate as a minister and to be sworn-in as Minister with three other colleagues of his. And the embarrassment caused to me when the former Secretary to the Federal Government, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe came to inform me that Mr. President had decided not to swear in Mr. Orubebe.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/clark-to-orubebe-you-cant-be-governor-of-delta-state-come-2015/ |
The House of Representatives, Arewa Youths and Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State were among other Nigerians, who Tuesday, urged the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, to investigate the Presidential Adviser on Niger-Delta Amnesty Programme, Kingsley Kuku, as well asthe former leader of Niger Delta Volunteer Force, NDVF, Alhaji Mujaheed Asari-Dokubo, over alleged “inciting statements” capable of causing disaffection in the country. Both Kuku and Dokubo were alleged to have threatened that there would be upheavals in the country, if President Goodluck Jonathan was not voted into office in 2015 to complete the amnesty programme for the Niger Delta militants. In Minna, capital of Niger State, Governor Babangida Aliyu, also urged security agencies to arrest the NDVF leader, Dokubo over what he described as his alleged treasonable offence against the nation. Aliyu spoke just as a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye called for arrest of Dokubo following his purported threat that there would be no peace inthe country if President Jonathan failed to win the 2015 poll. Dokubo had at a news conference in Abuja, weekend, said Nigeria will be in crisis if Jonathan was denied a second term in office because, according to him, the current peace being enjoyed in the Niger Delta region was because Jonathan was the President. Kuku also reportedly threatened in far away United States that there would be chaos in the country if President Jonathanwas not re-elected in 2015. However, in a unanimous motion passed by the House of Representatives, it noted that there was urgent need to checkthe unguarded statements of the Niger Delta leaders and urged the police high command to investigate them. The motion for investigation of both Kuku and Dokubo was moved by Ali Sani Madaki (PDP, Kano) on the urgent need to check the utterances of some Nigerians, capable of causing disaffection among people in the country. Madaki regretted that “while Nigerians are fervently praying for peace in the country, some Nigerians are already sowing seeds of discord amongst the people,” adding that if not checked, the statements credited to Kuku and Dokubo were “capable of creating disunity and disaffection among the good people of Nigeria.’’ When the motion was put to vote by the Speaker of the Houseof Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, members unanimously adopted it after condemning Kuku and Dokubo’sstatements “in strongest terms” and mandated its committee on Public Safety and National Security to liaise with the IGP and keep the House abreast with any development on the subject matter and condemned the statements. Asari Dokubo But Governor Aliyu, who spoke when he received members ofthe House of Representatives Committee on Education, led byAminu Sule who paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Minna, said Asari Dokubo should have been picked-up for what he described as “unfortunate and inciting statement”. His words: “Dokubo went on to say that the day Goodluck is no longer the president, all of us (militants) who are on sabbatical will come back. There will be no peace not only in the Niger Delta but everywhere. If they say it is an empty boast let them wait and see. You do not win election by frightening people and even if you win, it will be pyrrhic victory. We should bring discipline into our politics.” According to Aliyu, Nigerians and their leaders should cultivate the habit of respecting the nation’s security agenciesand give them the support that will make them successful in their assignments. He commended the security agents for the role they played inrestoring peace to Madalla, in the state, after the 2011 Christmas Day bombing which led to death of over 30 worshippers at St Theresa’s Catholic Church. Earlier, the Committee Chairman, Aminu Sule had observed that Nigeria was passing through difficult moments, saying that people of goodwill and those interested in her survival should work towards ensuring sanity in the polity. Aminu Sule added that the House of Representatives would continue to work with people who are genuinely interested in the survival of democracy. “We will always back those who speak the truth for the nation to grow,’’ he said. A former member of the House of Representatives and Executive Secretary of Anti-Corruption Network, Dino Melaye, also asked the Federal Government to take Dokubo’s threat seriously, since it had to do with the unity of the country. According to him, all relevant security agencies including the police, Department of State Security, DSS, and National Intelligence Agency, NIA, should without delay arrest and place Asari-Dokubo under surveillance, as he had earlier “carried arms against the Federal Government of Nigeria.” Melaye further said, “were it to be any of us in the civil societygroups that made such an outrageous statement, by now, we would have been invited by the DSS and the police and we would have been accused of threatening the security and peace of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “How can a private citizen who has carried arms against the Federal Government but, the country became so magnanimous to grant him amnesty, now categorically state that if Jonathan is not re-elected in 2015, apparently, there will be no Nigeria again. “We are using this opportunity to call on the IGP, DG of SSS and DG of NIA to place Dokubo-Asari on caution and let him be made to write a statement and that statement must be investigated. A man who has carried arms before and is giving this kind of threat should not be taken lightly. He should be arrested, investigated and placed on caution,” he stated. Meanwhile, the Arewa Youth Forum also yesterday asked security agencies to urgently arrest and prosecute ex-militantleader, Asari Dokubo, for threatening to levy war on Nigeria inpeace time without any justification. The National President of the AYF, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, made the demand in a reaction to the claim by Dokubo that there would be no peace in Nigeria if Jonathan was not re-elected for a second term in 2015. Although the AYF dismissed Dokubo’s threat as the figment ofa confused person. It maintained that the ex-militant leader should be brought to book before he plunged the nation into avoidable crisis. “To start with, Asari Dokubo cannot be said to be speaking forany group because he has no credibility to do so as his doublespeak over the years has only shown him as a character who is only after what he can get from the authorities for his selfish gratification . “Asari must understand and recognize the fact that we in the north are not afraid of war or violence that he is declaring, but following recent antecedents in the country we are of the view that this is the time for well-meaning Nigerians to put their heads together and work for peace and socio-economic development of the country. “We are looking forward to the 2015 elections with the minds of democrats who believe in the democratic tenets that will usher in socio-economic development for a united Nigeria where all youths will be able to achieve their potentials. We believe that power comes from God and he will give it to whoever he pleases any time. “Ordinarily we will not join issues with the likes of Asari that are known for their antecedents, but let it be known that as youths from the North we are not afraid of Asari and his cohorts. “All we are concerned about is to work with other stakeholders in the country towards the return of peace and normalcy in the region and by extension throughout the country so that we can continue with the process of building avirile and peaceful country where the present and future generations and youths can be happy and have a stake to develop themselves to their full potential.’’ Adding their voice to the AYF, a group of Unemployed Nigerians in the 774 Local Government Areas of Nigeria, GUN774, described the outburst by Dokubo as a serious threat to national peace, which should not be taken lightly by President Jonathan and the security agencies. The National Leader of GUN774, Okey Nwachukwu, told Vanguard that such a careless statement by Dokubo, a kinsman of Mr. President, was capable of plunging the countryinto unnecessary chaos at a time the country was in dire needof peace and development. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/05/arrest-dokubo-kuku-gov-aliyu-arewa-youths-others-tell-police/ |

how would a state governor discharge his constitutional responsibilities and you said you declared state of emergency in the state. The state governor still remain the chief security officer of the state.
