Ahead of the 2023 election, Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has reportedly inaugurated a campaign team for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, in Benue.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that according to an associate of the governor, who pleaded anonymity, while Ortom had not openly endorsed a particular candidate, he had called on his foot soldiers to embrace Obi.

“Governor Ortom has already inaugurated an Obi team using his most trusted aides and allies,” Punch quotes the source as saying.

“Former governorship aspirant, Professor Dennis Tyavyar, is Chairman of the group. He was Commissioner for Education under Ortom before he stepped down to contest the governorship election.”

The G5: Governors Ortom, Nyesom Wike, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Seyi Makinde of Benue, Rivers, Abia, Enugu, Oyo states respectively, had renounced their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council in September 2022, demanding, among others, the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to pave the way for a southern successor.

*5�Projects: Road constructions, street lighting, school building and renovation, water supply, electricity distribution, skills acquisition centres, etc., have been executed in numerous locations in the 2 LGAs. This is in addition to numerous empowerment trainings and take off grants for the youths of our Constituency.*

�Empowerment: Hon Emeka Chinedu has redefined 'empowerment' beyond the 'new normal' of distribution of grinding machines, inferior China motorcycles, I pass my neighbour generators, etc., His pragmatic Leadership style has enabled the provision of 'seed capital' to over 50 willing and able youths in the constituency as take off grants for their respective businesses.

*7� Employment of Legislative Aids: Not stopping at empowerment, he has deployed capable hands from the constituency for ideas incubation, project monitoring and effective communication. In an unprecedented move, he has engaged over 40 Mbaise sons and daughters as his aides. These are paid monthly from his personal allowances and are directly involved in the running of the constituency. This is indeed more empowering than distribution of cash to voters, an unprecedented gesture in the history of Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency.*

8�Accessibility: Hon Emeka Chinedu is unarguably the most accessible Federal Representative in the Green Chamber. His protocol does not go beyond “Nwa nne m, I wu onye Mbaise?” His office is a source of socour to job seekers, Youth Corps members and Market women from the constituency.

He equally visited our various churches and communities to encourage them to participate in his comprehensive development projects and take advantage of avenues for economic survival presented by the Federal government.*

10�Frugality: As we all know, Hon Emeka Chinedu did not come into politics as a pauper or with an intention to enrich himself. He was visibly comfortable and that enabled him to execute projects in record time without dipping his hand in the cookie jar. “O ri wele eriwe ma bia kpota oha." To this effect, we cannot afford to go back to Egypt, neither will you our people afford to disembark from ship ladden unprecedented performance. We do not need hungry, ‘afo-ejughi ala’ type of leaders when we already have one who is contented with his personal resources.

Verified complaint for forfeiture

The United States of America, by its attorney, Micheal J. Shepard, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, for its verified complaint for forfeiture, states as follows:

1. This is a forfeiture action under 21 U.S.C & 881 and 18 U.S.C. & 981. This court has jurisdiction over this action pursuant to 28 U.S.C && 1345 and 1355.

2. The defendant funds are located in the above-described accounts and were SEIZED pursuant to process issued by this court. This court has venue in this matter pursuant to 28 U.S.C. & 1355 because CRIMINAL ACTIVITY giving rise to this forfeiture action occurred in this district.

3. This complaint is verified by the affidavit of Special Agent Kevin Moss which is attached hereto and incorporated by reference in this complaint.

4. As is stated more fully in the attached affidavit, beginning as early as 1988, Adegboyega Mueez Akande, with others, operated a organization which distributed white heroin, a controlled substance under title 21 of the United States code.

5. As is stated more fully in the attached affidavit, this distribution operation was conducted on a large scale and the proceeds of the operation were substantial. The defendant funds represent proceeds of this operation or property involved in money laundering.

6. By reason of facts set forth above and in the attached affidavit, there is probable cause to believe that the defendant funds represent proceeds of narcotics trafficking and further represent property involved in money laundering in violation of 18 U.S.C. && 1956 and 1957. The defendant funds are therefore forfeitable to the United States pursuant to 21 U.S.C. & 881 and 18 U.S.C. &981.

Wherefore, the United States requests:

1. that the defendant funds be proceeded against for forfeiture and condemnation, that warrants of seizure and monition issue and that due notice be given to all interested parties to appear and show cause why the forfeiture should not be decreed; and

2. that the court adjudge and decree that the defendant funds be forfeited to the United States and that the defendant funds be disposed according to the law.
