Walspring:

Nope it is not....

S - Science
T - Technology
E - Engineering
M - Mathematics

Am sure it correct only if am not wrong..
Amefrica:

I'm afraid you are wrong Sir! There are some social science's courses that are part of STEM. Economics is one
Amefrica:

Yes ma, it is.
Walspring:

Okay if u say so no probs but i always thought STEM consist of all pure science combination..

Going through Wikipedia I'm seeing these courses listed as STEM:

....[Many organizations in the United States follow the guidelines of the National Science Foundation on what constitutes a STEM field. The NSF uses a broader category to define STEM subjects which includes subjects in the fields of Chemistry, Computer and Information Technology Science, Engineering, Geosciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Social Sciences (Anthropology, Economics, Psychology and Sociology), and STEM Education and Learning Research].....

And then the same Wikipedia has another link to US immigration's own list of STEM: http://www.ice.gov/doclib/sevis/pdf/stem-list.pdf)

I'm not sure which is current. Who has a link to the correct STEM courses?

Are you going for MS in Petroleum Engineering or Petroleum Geology? In any case, you have a good chance of getting the visa if you are going for one of the STEM majors.
imperiouxx:

Also, a company sponsoring him will attract a big question that needs strong convincing answers.

Is Economics a part of STEM ?

cheesy cheesy cheesy see pot calling kettle black. let him come up with the possibility first and let's see who will grab am first grin. Meanwhile, Am on a family plan with AT&T (na Awuf sha o) grin.
@flybird : Why not try to get 2 more people and sign up for family plan with T-Mobile. By doing that, the first person pays $50, second pays $30 and the third $10. You guys share the bills and each gets to pay $30. The problem is getting peeps sha o. undecided

I heard about a WalMart plan for $40 monthly but I'll have to buy another t-mobile sim card for $25. I wasn't aware before I go his one for $10 and $50 monthly. Besides its still the same slow 2G network sad

Keel trying and looking around. Anything might pop up. You could just jam an opening one day.
As per Wellsfargo!!! Which kain account is that? shocked Use your card 30 times in a month? That's crazy and unheard of (at least for me o) RUN. Try Bank of America and see what's obtainable first. Chase Bank sef.

I use T-mobile too. To me, it's quite cheap anyways. I rarely use my 4G cos I'm surrounded by WiFi. Anywhere I go, it's highly likely I get wifi. Come to think of it, the 2G network isn't that bad. Compared to where we're coming from (Nigeria) American 2G is like Nigerian 4G.
Another option is to pay an additional $20 for full 4G coverage. T-Mobile is like one of the cheapest here though, my friend uses Verizon. She pays $70 monthly and her data is measured. She can't use more than her allocated data per month. Sprint and AT&T are expensive too.

My 2G is slow oh. Very slow. Its frustrating. And my landlord didn't include WiFi in my utilities. I'll have to pay about $50 a month for Wifi if I want it.
Travel / Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by flynbird(f): 4:04am On Nov 12, 2013
Is T-mobile cost effective? I pay $50 monthly for slow internet. Its got unlimited text and calls and they give out the first 500mb internet at 4G speed and after that It slows down to 2G not even 3G. I don't have WIFI at home.

I don't think it's restricted. I registered with my school's career services even before I left Nigeria. Did you try registering with the portal before you tried logging in? Either way, they should have an office on campus. You might just pop into their office and see what they got for you.

Check those two places, you have a chance of finding something there. wink

Thanks dear. Called the library but they don't have an opening yet. I've put up another application for "University Information Call Center" Do you know if Wellsfargo is the best bank in terms of cost to use? I just found out they charge a minimum of $3 per month on any type of account. But they'll waive it only if you maintain a minimum of $500 throughout the month or you use your card a minimum of 30 times a month. How true is this?

Did you check the library and cafeteria? They usually have lots of jobs at the beginning of the semester. You probably didn't get one fast because you didn't start searching early. Go there and ask. Nobody will post such jobs on websites. I dunno if your school has a career center. They usually have a list of on-campus jobs

No I haven't been to the library or cafeteria.

Oh! What I've been clicking on was employment for lecturing kind of work. I didn't know there's anything like student career center. Going through the website i just found out there's a career office on campus and they have a link on the website where I'll sign in with my student ID. But I've tried to login and it wouldn't go through. Hope its not restricted to only those that have spent at least 2 semesters. I'll have to call them to find out.

My schedules are a lil better now. If only I could get a campus job. None yet. I just sit indoors most often. There are lots of openings for instructors but most need a masters degree. Besides I don't really fancy lecturing job

it's actually a simple rule and not in any way vague. Int'l student is allowed to work 20hrs a week at his/her convenience. It could be immediately. (1st semester) or later.

I arrived late in my school and unfortunately, all the on-campus jobs had been taken. So am hoping to get one by Spring term. How's studies?

okay.. Probably the international office is getting strict on students from india

Immediately not 2 semesters. If not, then I've violated the rule because I started immediately I reached here, likewise other int'l student I know everywhere in this US.

ok. Just wondering because i told my indian friend about the job applications i put up. And she was suprised cos her international office told her she cant work on-campus because she's a new F-1 student. Shes a grad student just like me too oh.. **confused**

The 20hours can start right from the day you set foot in America. It applies to both undergrad and Grad. Many of the international students at my school got jobs immediately they came in.

oh but there are lots of contradicting answers to this question oh.. Some people say after the first 2 semesters which is one academic year
Travel / Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by flynbird(f): 2:12am On Oct 19, 2013
Wait oh! I dont seem to fully understand this F-1 student 20hrs on-campus work... Is it after the first academic year that we are eligible to work? Or does it apply to just undergrad and not graduate student?

Well, when I'm paying for t-mobile, they ask the option of if I've a refill card or card number to pay my monthly bill with. Get a refill card and dial their costumer line +1 877 778 2106. However, we come back to post because we don't go to classes.....lolz

ok sir... But I tried using the phone and following the voice prompt but it isn't working for the master card.. Just wondering whether T-Mobile don't accept GTbank master card or I have to have a special code.. Can't I just do it on an atm machine just like we do in Nigeria?

Quick question.

How do I pay T-mobile phone bill here? Can I use GTBank Master card on any banks ATM here. Would GTBank charge for it and would the bank charge for the transaction too. Do I use the same pin code I used back in Nigeria?
I tried using it online but it says my bank didn't authorize the transaction.

In between how do you guys come back here posting? Its not easy doing this with schools work.

olarwarlay: @Flynbird - I believe you can get a Driver's License without having the SSN, i went to the Driver's license office with my i20, passport and a proof of residence (you can get this if you have someone who has stayed in the state for more than a year, and who is ready to help you sign on the form. All they need to take along is some kind of proof e.g Lease agreement, Electricity or Water bill)

OjaP:

You don't need a SSN to obtain a driver's license. Your SS card will only make it easier as I explained earlier. With your SS card, you won't have to show so much docs such as visa page, I-20, debit card etc. (as the case may be). Each of the docs you show are assigned certain "points". If you earn the minimum points to obtain, then you are good to go. If not, they ask you for more to meet up.

See Olawale's post above.
They looked up my Information on DHS website, i paid $25 application fee, took the online test last week, passed and will be going for the road test tomorrow. I showed them my Nigerian driver's license and so i do not need to get the learner's permit first because i've been driving before now.

If you have not been driving before now, what they will give you at first is the Learner's permit.

Note that each state has different laws governing obtaining the driver's license, the above info might only work in Texas where i stay.

ok now I understand. I guess Imperioxx was wrong

imperiouxx:

No SSN..... yes of course, you can work restlessly but I'm afraid, you're only working for free without pay (jara in Hausa). Reason is because it will be written in your record each time you're paid that you're only paid for work done under the authority of DHS. No employer wants to violate DHS rules. This is the reason why student SSN is different from the normal resident SSN (you're only working under the DHS authorization)

Yes without SSN, you should be a visitor in the US or illegal, so by that you need no driver's license and if not, then you're legal and your SSN is needed to issue you license to drive freely in the US.

I understand the DHS job restrictions but what I was confused about is why job gets you SSN and SSN gets you Drivers license. Meaning without a job no Drivers license. But its all clear now smiley

imperiouxx:

Get a job first (without that you can't get employer's letter used for obtaining the SSN), then you request for the letter from your Int'l student office and you find your way to the social security administration closer to you ma'am.

Huh? undecided Does this mean If I can't get a job then I can't apply for the SSN, and without the SSN I can't get a drivers license? Or what does OjaP mean by DL in his reply? Does DL mean drivers license? Me I'm still a JJC/ novice here oh! Please enlighten me Sir's. smiley

Ms Nas:
If you get an on-campus job, then you'll need to apply for an SSN. Eleyi ti mo mo niyen. Lol
OjaP:

Not compulsory but necessary. Some of the benefits include but not limited to the following:

- Allows you apply for credit cards.

- Buy things on credit.

- Helping in getting a DL or state issued ID with ease without going through points counting as obtained in some states.

Some jobs also require you to fill in your SSN when applying for jobs. These are just some of its benefits.

Oh ok. So where do I go to apply for SSN?
