Tip Of The Day!

Always use High Quality Satellite Cables to connect from LNB to Receiver. The recommended cable is RG6, 75ohm or RG6/U, 75ohm cable.  RG59 cables are not good, because they have a very high resistance, there by preventing some frequencies from going from the LNB to the Receiver. Even if they work, they eventually burn out (become too resistant) and you lose signal. Try and keep the distance from your LNB to receiver under 100ft or 30.48 meters. If your Cables are over 30 meters in distance, you begin to lose signal Quality. Always ground your setup!!!! Grounding your Dish will prevent Lightning from damaging your Receiver during Thunder and Lightning Storms, and also keep your Family safe from a stray bolt of lightning entering your house via your Dish > Cable > Receiver. cool

On Humax decoder, I met a satellite dealer on Wednesday who told me he had sold out his stock of Humax decoders. He however promise me that if I can furnish him with the model we need, he will surely stock his shop with the needed model in his next trip. I can't remember the exact model of Humax we need, let me know and I will pass the info to the guy.

As regard FORUM I had said it that I don't have objection and would love to be part of it. But with my current workload, don't think I may be of a working committee, but would love to be carried along in case there may be any occasion my assistance can come into play. I think the suggestion of Enitan is quite okay.

Here is what I wrote earlier. "Considering that this version of Seun's Web Application is somewhat a primitive version, maybe, I say maybe he is hesitant to upgrade to a newer version due to the added cost." I was referring to the cost benefit analysis of upgrading his entire website not just PM. Don't forget also that I'm a son of the soil and I know that we have very many $ and £ Millionaires in Nigeria. Heck, you might even be one of them just hangging out with we less privileged ones on this forum. My point is for Seun to upgrade so that he can be competitive in his business. My two cents.

@ all,
I've once discussed this 'PM' with seun in the past and the reason he gave for not including it in the forum, i quite agreed with him.
The reason he gave was that if 'PM" should be included, information shared on the forum will reduced drastically, because only some few ones will have access to it. So the main reason of setting up this forum will be jeopardize. If PM should have been included, do you think the public will have access to many of our info? NO.There's always good and bad sides of a thing. Instead of using the PM, why not send mails to that fellow.
What do ya all think?
@ the highlighted.

That is absolutely false!!!!!! shocked embarassed On every board, PM feature is used for what it is meant for, which is "PRIVATE MESSAGE". Both the sender and receiver use this feature to share infomation that shouldn't be posted publicly on the Internet.  I belong to various boards and the presence of PM, has in no way diminished the flow of information to members of the board, instead it has provided privacy and security. Why should most of you be posting your mobile,  home and business phone numbers here for everyone to have access to it, when you can pass such sensitive informations privately to the intended rerecipientnd not the entire world?

@ SEUN
Considering that this version of Seun's Web Application is somewhat a primitive version, maybe, I say maybe he is hesitant to upgrade to a newer version due to the added cost. As everything Nigerian, we refuse to upgrade, or maintain our infrastructures and applications, but blame the entire world when we can't meet up with the competition. Compare the Icons, Smilies, Tags and other features on this Forum with the other Forums around the world. You be the judge Seun my friend, please as you're well aware, your little dream has grown beyond your wildest imagination. Please, this your baby "Nairaland" needs a serious upgrade. Don't stop now. You have started something really big and you shouldn't limit your success now. If there was a PM feature, I would have communicated this to you PRIVATELY. smiley

@ Olofofo

In response to this:

The arrangement of Dishes you saw on Page 112 of that Magazine is only used to increase singal gain from a particular satellite, and the resulting increased signal is then directed towards a particular device at a particular station (NASA uses the same method to gather Signals from the MARS Rover).  If for example an additional dish is erected in the same area, but connected to a different station (Terminal), the new station will not see an increase in Signal, but will only output the signal strength applicable to only one dish.  Therefore, a chain of Dish clusters can only increase the Signal output to a particular device in a terminal, and not a geographical region.

i came across a discoery and am just being confused and not convinced concerning the strong decoder getting HD pictures, on eutelsat w6 check link http://www.lyngsat.com/ew6.html at freq 11555H, 5000. The LBCs package is in MPEG-4 which is same as HD, are we now saying a special HD deocder is needed to get these free stations?
If it says MPEG4 Encoding, your Strong MPEG2 decoder can only lock onto the signal, but the resulting Video will be Scrambled. You need an MPEG4 Capable receiver to enjoy the transmission. wink

A note about Feeds:
For those of you that enjoy watching feeds and back Hauls: It is not a good idea to publicly display the Transponders in any public forum as the providers may catch-on and scramble them. Here in the US, we lost the ability to watch WWE's live and taped matches, because some dude(s) couldn't contain their excitement and revealed the Frequencies that WWE broadcast their Wrestling matches. In the future, if you want to talk about an available feed, you can say for example, "there is a sport feed on 68°E, just scan for them." Don't be specific about transponder info. If you don't want to see all your feeds scrambled, you all better be discrete in divulging Satellite Feeds info.

Regarding Olofofo's StarSat Receiver, Enigma excellently took care of that. cool

On the subject of Fibre Dishes. Are those locally made in Nigeria? How smooth are the inside surfaces of these Dishes? The last time I saw some locally fabricated dishes, it appeared there were lots of irregualrities on the surfaces of those dishes. Considering they are light weight and resistant to rust, I tend to be leaning towards buying one in my future purchase. How much would it cost to secure 3M Fibre Dish in Nigeria?

enitan2002: The PH guru himself pitodenz, gave me a call during the week, and he confirmed what badaru said concerning getting nile with a 1.8m dish, he said he could get the first frequency using 1.8m dish, so if that should have been possible, i think what really is left, is just the LNB skewing, and there's a particular freq u must be on when skewing the LNB after you must have gotten the signal using the 1st TP, badaru knows the TP involved in this skewing, he might be able to help.
The Key to skewing your LNB is to first lock on your preferred bird with the strongest Transponder. Temporarily peak that Strong transponder, then (depending on the Receiver) BLIND SCAN or POWER SCAN. After scanning, go through the newly acquired channels and find the weakest transponder, I repeat find the weakest transponder, and then tweak by skewing the LNB and also moving it back and forth to increase the signal. When your satisfied with the increase, then go back to your original Lock transponder to make sure the Quality level is still acceptably high to you.

enigma: Olofofo

Those card shari*g receivers are not worth it; for instance, the servers for most of them are currently down. What you will find with most of those receivers is that they will work for a few weeks (maybe months), then server goes down and that might be the end of the receiver. Edited that is currently the case with the European and Middle East servers of such receivers; maybe F_Marshall can advise better regarding North American servers.
On improving signal --------- hmmmm, seems like time to buy a new and better 2.4 dish!!!!!!!

Seriously, I don't think a signal booster or panel beater will do that much good.

To tell you the truth, I am really impressed by your set up. I will like to know more about your motorised 1.8; can you please post a picture of it? I remember you are using 2 LNBs with it; one Ku and one C, is that correct?
Here in the US, the gist is most receivers are always up with IKS. For instance, nfusion, KBoX and Captain are always up whenever an Electronic Counter Measure (ECM) is introduced into the steam by the Providers. This is not to say that there are no down times when using those (Internet Key Sharing) IKS systems, which is minimal. There maybe intermitent picture freezing issues; but the bottom line is, you don't have to wait for keys whenever the keys are not available for standalone boxes. Oh, I hear that most of the Servers for the US IKS boxes are located in ASIA. They do this to avoid the wrath of US laws.

Enigma:
This theory is simply not correct. No matter the number of dishes pointing at a satellite, that number alone cannot increase or improve signal strength. As far as people receiving better signal from Nilesat is concerned, one explanation I can give is this: the likelihood is that people received more channels when Nilesat 102 was deployed in addition to Nilesat 101. Remember that there are three satellites located at the orbital position of 7w i.e. Nilesat 101, Nilesat 102 and Atlantic Bird 4 --- thereby increasing the number of frequencies and channels that can be received.

Compare saying that a radio FM frequency signal increases depending on the number of radio sets trying to receive the frequency; it is just not true; it is contrary to the physics/science.
@ Enigma.
Thanks for shading more light on the myth that Satellite foot print increases in proportion to large clusters of Dish installations in a Particular geographical location. I did try to explain here, but to no avail.

As you requested, below are some links to  "Internet Key Sharing" Receivers (IKS) that update Automatically via the internet using a Dongle. Note; you must have a Broadband internet connection to enjoy the benefits of these receivers. Also, please make sure it is compatible with your system before you buy. If you can afford it, you should go for Receivers that are HD MPEG4 capable. Do not buy MPEG 2, HD Receiver because they are not upward convertible. Meaning an MPEG 4 receiver can display MPEG 2 HD content in addition to displaying MPEG 4. On the other hand, MPEG 2 HD receiver can only display MPEG 2 content. The Captain 8000HD is an example of an MPEG 2 Receiver. Remember, all information provided is for Educational purposes only.

Big thanks to Oga Patata BADARU and His able PA ENITAN they were at my place fro around 10am to almost 8pm.

most of you guys know the story of how my 2.4m dish has been laying fallow after my first installer battered it up from me. and based on the pictre that i posted,, some respectable members of tis forum noted that it might be a bit warped. anyway to cut long story short. Badaru came and as i am talking to you right now, i have about 165 nilesat channels in Lagos! with this renewed confidence that it can be done, i am gearing up to buya brand new 2.4m dish to replace the old one. it was no easy work fixing up the dish, My apreciation goes out to Oga badaru again and enitan.

to everyone in the house resident in lagos, if you have space and can afford to spare a few bucks, NILESAT is the way to go, don't let no dealer convince you that fibre is the only way to go.

Body dey pain me no be small sha! make i go bath, i dey stink! since 8am to 8pm .

RE: My Respected Gurus in the House
Please, how can I do DISEQC CONFIGURATION SETTINGS, step-by-step, on the HITV DECODER? I wish to combine the channels on w3a & intelsat 7/10 ku. Thanks.
I do not own a HITV Decoder, but I would imagine the principle is the same for all Receivers.  wink

Connect the cables coming from the LNB to the DiseqC switch. In this example, lets say 1 and 2 on the DiseqC switch. Now, go to the decoder and assign the port numbers on the receiver to correspond with the numbers you assigned to the Satellites on the DiseqC. Being an installer, I would assume that you know to set the LNB type and Frequency, so I would leave you to figure that out. See attached photo of a 2 Satellite setup. cool

F_Marshal,

Talk about simplicity, i first did d test on a friends dish, i used a really thin wire by the way, and the distance between the strings was less than 2-3mm (maybe the strings were not taut enough?), so i went back home and repeated it on mine, the distance between the strings was about 1.5 - 2cm. i actually expected that because there are 6 metals used to attach d base of the pan to the circular support frame of my dish and one of them is missing, (don't ask me how), i'll try and get another one as soon as possible and repeat the test, i actually have to reposition the dish anyway. thanks
Very simple. Wasn't ithuh  grin
Here is a Picture Sample of a String or Rope Test. See how the strings meet at right angles (like a +) at the middle of the Dish. smiley

He said, if more people in lagos now focus on using 2.4m in ngetting nilesat in lagos, the signal would be drawn more towards Lagos. He said as at 2 years agao in the North, it was difficult to get nilesat with 1.8m dish, but it was now due to the number of satellites in that region facing nilesat bird made that possible. So if we in lagos can start doing that, then we will surely smile.
I know you mean well, but that assertion above practically doesn't apply. Remember, there is only a one way communication between the Satellite and our Antenna (dish), therefore there is no exchange of information, and without information exchange between the two bodies there is absolute no way the Bird would increase it's foot print simply, because there are more dishes installed in a particular geographical area. smiley

Tape a string from the 12 o'clock position to the 6 o' clock position. Again, Tape another string from the 9 o' clock to the 3 o' clock position. If the string touches together at the center, the dish is not warped. On the other hand, if there is a gap at where the two strings meet, the dish is warped. cool

thx for your observation, but the water was from rain 2 days ago. it's there because of the NSS7 KU andgle it's at right now.I always drain it anytime it rains. i believe that if i finally get the nilesat to work, the water will find it's own way down.

regarding the dents on the dish, my brother, that dish don suffer. first it was motorized and then de-motoriaed and i had to bring it down tomake space for the 1.8m, infact i fell down working on that dish. i will try your test with badaru on wednesday.

what you see on the cable is remnant of the tape from strapping it to the prongs. the cable is in no way broken.

rust is actually a major issue with the second dish, the dealer nack me well well, because when I bought it, I did not know much. does the cash wax solution apply to my 1.8? or what do you suggest i use to reduce rust? i might have to get anoter dish is less than 6 month if the rust continues as it is.

overall, i appreciate your eye for details regarding the pix of my dishes. You are one eagle eye.
The 1.8m could benefit from Car Wax solution. Remember, you have to apply the wax on the surface of the dish. Polish the car wax on the dish, and also apply same to the eye of the LNB. When it rains, the water will run off the dish's surface more quickly thereby improving signal during mild rain storms.

Short of buying a new dish, you can treat the dish with an anti rust paint that is not very glossy. Read more from this thread. Also, see below the attachement on correcting Warped Discs.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by FMarshal2(m): 9:13pm On Sep 29, 2008
@ Olofofo;
Looking at pictures of your dishes, I see some things that may cause you to loose signals.

1) There is rain water collecting on your dish. You may start by finding some sort of way do prevent water from percolating on the dish.

2) There are bumps and bruises on the edges of the dish which may have extended to the rest of the dish. You can check if your dish is level by doing the "Thread (rope) Test". You do this by tying two threads ( it could Nylon or any kind thin thread) across the face of the dish, thereby creating an X in the middle. If the threads touch at the middle of the Dish, then the dish is not warped or bent. Another method is to face the dish down on a flat smooth surface. With the dish facing down check to see if all sides of the dish is touching the smooth flat surface. If not try your best to smoothen out the rough edges and test again. But considering the size of the dish, I don't know where you'll find a flat smooth surface that covers up to 2.4m!

3) The cable from the LNB to your Receiver seems to be cut and patched; If you can connect the cable directly from LNB to Receiver without cutting or patching the cable that may help prevent signal loss. Improperly connected cables can cause loss of weak Transponder frequency singals. If you have to connect a broken cable, always use a Barrell connector.

4) On the second Dish; The presence of rust on that dish can diminish the reflective qualities of dish, thereby reducing the quality signal strength.

@ All
This is for those of you with 90CM of less dishes, if you can get your hands on a car wax, you can apply it on the dish to help reduce rain fade. Note: The car wax will not  entirely eliminate rain fade on very heavy rainy days! cool
