johnydon22: It was a rape of culture, belief and norms. It was a terrorism of traditional heritage and the emergence of an alien religion based on inferiority complex and background.
I took time to study into my traditional religion and i found nothing absolutely wrong with it. Its not just christianity but islam too, both are middle east concepts and myths one propagated by the arabs and the other reworked by europians and sold to africans.
Before the missionaries came, African had their own religion, culture and tradition. we had our own little way of science and technology. . . They had knowledge in astrology, mathematics, music, medicine, biology, simple physics and many more.
e.g: Ancient igbos successfully divided the year into 365days of 4day in 1 week and 7weeks in one month and 13months in one year.
The foriegners came, they brought with them many magic like never seen before, they had a fire stick that can kill at just a click unlike our manually operated bow and hand thrown spears.
They had boxes that talked and then they laid claim to a better knowledge and we swallowed it. Its not wrong acquiring knowledge all round you but denying yours is the problem.
They criticized our Gods and termed them demons and evils but they said the one they brought was the best and the good one. They threatened us with a place of forever burning and the end of the world and we fell for this fear.
It makes me wonder; How the African Gods that never threatened anybody with hell and end of the world was the bad one while the one they brought that derives pleasure in such threats is the good one.
They blamed us for a sin supposedly committed by their own mythical ancestors, they told us we were evil and bad and worthless that is why we needed to saved from what their God will do to us if we fail to believe it and leave ours
They raped our culture and our ways, we lost ourselves in the blind notion of seeing the light.
Fela Kuti said; Go to china, vietnam, korea. . "their culture is their teacher". Majority of Chinese are buddist or other chinese traditional religion only a few are christians or muslims.
The chinese style of writing remains the main mode of writing even for their mobile phones and computer. The same china was colonized by britain, they embaced civilization but never lost or abandoned their ways and culture.
But africans carry other people's myth and beliefs in their head like it concerns them more while subjecting ours to neglect and abandonment. An average christian can tell you the geneology of Jesus down to what ever but cannot mention his own geneology to his great grand father, same way an average muslim know more about muhammed than his own ancestors.
If the missionaries had packaged and brought Greek mythology here (God zeus)instead of jewish myth. Africans would have stilled believed it exactly same way they hype christianity.
Until we rightly identify our cultures and our ways and make a stand to preserve them, we would always be lost in the vacuum of other people's culture were you not the one that called African science superstion? |

dabosuker: I really love this post , Educating us about African gods. I wish the origin of this gods was well detailed , with pictorials/images of each god. it would help me understand better what really this gods are about. going through the post, i saw some of the gods where referred to as "sky gods", and am sure most of them if not all came from the sky, which makes me to think , the gods may have been astronauts from space that visited earth in the remote past, because most of the gods came from the sky, they were worshipped as sky gods e.g i can remember in social studies class, ...Oduduwa came down to earth on a chain from the sky... & started life on earth etc. Has anyone wondered if "Sango" & "Thor" could have been the same being, but represented differently by different eyes/minds(cultures). uchgurl442: You know there is a difference between God and gods. Believing God exists is quite different from believing these gods exist Religion has eaten up everything including English. Haaaa! God is not a proper noun and does not need capitalization. It is a tag or better put a title. Anything can be God if it has features and measures of what person call a god. Do you capitalize a particular king while you leave others in common/lower case? Nope. The reason why you dont do this is because King is a common noun which is denoting a class of objects or a concept as opposed to a particular individual. There is a king in the chess game, villages, cities and even among the colony of insect. Do you capitalize the city King because it is Bigger? Nope. Why, because it is not a name of any particular object or person but it is a tag or title for a post. Common noun from the dictionary is a word (such as “singer,” “ocean,” or “car”) that refers to a person, place, or thing but that is not the name of a particular person, place, or thing. Fela Anikulapo, Lil-wayne and Vector are name of a particular person which is proper noun and needs capitalizaion. Being a singer, you dont need to capitalize the word singer unless it start a sentence. Jehovah, Thor, Krishna, Sango and Obatala is a proper noun which should be capitalized but they are all classed under the common noun 'god'. Let me pick the bible to show you they aint different but mean the samething. Exodus 22:28 KJV reads; Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people. ESV, NIV and lot others read; “You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people. Look at the bold closely, one refer to gods while the other refer to God. In the same verse, the bible refer to same thing but with different word which shows that the words mean the samething. All you know is from the bible. Do you know more than it writter who cant differentiate gods from God but use both to refer to samething. There are lot of examples in the bible but I will stick to this. Adding, do you know what God mean in that verse? Maybe we need to go back to NOUN, god cannot be capitalized because it is not a proper noun. Abi, is God the name of your God? Does your God not have name? I don try for you Madam. God and gods is the samething. It is religion that brought mis-capitalization inside an innocent word 'god'. |

MEILYN: I will be ready for them by that time...
I asked a Christian this question and the answer I got was surprising.
The Bible says Noah went into the ark with two animals of every kind, male and female. Why did the animals not eat each other? The Christian looked at me and said god put his spirit on the animals, so they weren't hungry.
My question here is that, if god could put his Spirit on animals not to eat each other, he made them starve for 40days then why did he not put his spirit on the people of the Bible who ate their children?
6:29 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son. 2 Kings You err bruv. If the holy spirit has filled yoy, you woukd have underatand better. By then, the Lord was not with them na. |

9jacrip: By some, he is alleged to be Osun'd father but going by facts, does this mean that Olufon, the known first born of Obatala whose compound is still at Ife till eternity older than Osun who is often stated to have existed before Olufon who has existed even before Sango? Or are there two different Osuns?
Each child of Obatala, apart of Olufon' have their names present in the hierachical arrangment of Obatala's chiefs - a progression/growth that each person acquires till they become Obalesun (a name tag for Obatala). Some of the names are Olomo, leemo, Obalurin, Obanurin, Obalepon etc
From my own history of Obatala, gotten from a strong source, Osun was never said to have been Obatala's child, neither was he a husband to Yemoja.
Note: mythical aspect of Yoruba history is different from its actual history. From my rejoinder above, there appears to have been two Osuns. Same way there was an Ogun that paved the way for Obatala, Esu and Orunmila; then another one who was a one time Ooni in Ife - which are the Ogun adherents following? I leave that to you to answer.
You can either start distinguishing the myth in Yoruba cosmology from actual Yoruba history or continue to muddle them up sir. Oh lord. I have alot to learn from this guy |

buygala: "pre Mohammad invention of Islam in Egypt"
What does this mean? Islam originated from Mohammad who claimed he received msg from God. He was born, brought up and live most of his life in Arab. I dont even think he had any contact with those in egypt before he invented this religion. Meanwhile you argued that Islam is from egypt. So how can you correlate a religion fron Arab with Egypt? Does this mean there is likely a religion that have form like Islam which originated from Egypt? What is it? From whay I know, Islam took it forn from Judaism/Christianity. And this form which Islam took is from the surrounding. So explain egypt origin of Isla. |

please bear in mind that the thread is concerned with regions/ continents not countries .... So if Islam originated from the Middle East of which Egypt is part of, and the first major practice of Islam was recorded in North Africa, then Islam can be said to also originate from Africa Now I understand you. But can you explain how Islam originated from Egypt? I learnt thay Islam is from Mohammad and I dont see the guy having anything to do with Egypt. So pls explain this Egypt origination of Islam |
