Orji Kalu’s orderly allegedly shot a man at Amafia Iheochiwa in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State during the weekend, during an APC campaign in the state.

The man who was allegedly shot by Orji Kalu’s orderly, is said to be in a critical condition at the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. An indigene of Iheochiwa clan who gave his name as Abraham, said  men of the Nigeria police attached to the former Governor of Abia state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu  shot sporadically after he got booed at the community.

“The APC campaign train stopped over at Amafia Ihechiowa to address the locals. As Orji Kalu was addressing the people and making campaign promises, the youths questioned what he did to the people of Ihechiowa as Abia Governor of Abia North Extraction for eight years.

“One of the youth said you promise to deliver the Ihechiowa rig road and failed. We can not trust a man who was Governor for eight years and did nothing. At that point, the youths started booing him.

“The police officers attached to the campaign train started shooting randomly. A middle-aged man was hit and was immediately rushed to FMC Umuahia. He is in critical condition”.

PoliticsRe: Buhari’s Achievements Will Speak For Him - APC Replies Obasanjo by foreshore(m): 8:05pm On Jan 20, 2019
Muttee:
The All Progressive Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of plotting to rig the coming presidential election.

Speaking at an interactive session with reporters in Abuja on Sunday, the APC National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu noted that the party has no reason to do so.

He explained that the allegation of plot to rig the poll was a mere imagination of the former president whom he alleged was afraid of his past.

Issa-Onilu said, “We can understand where the former president is coming from; his past is haunting him.”

“2003 and 2007 elections were nothing to write home about, those happened under former President Obasanjo. We all know how the elections went. So, for us in the APC, votes will count.”

The APC spokesman stressed that President Buhari has no reason to rig the election, having promised Nigerians that he would ensure the votes were free and fair.

He added that while the President’s work would speak for him at the poll, it was during former President Obasanjo’s administration that manipulation of the electoral process was alleged a norm.

Issa-Onilu further advised the former president to readjust himself to the reality of what he described as an imminent defeat.

“We are going to have a free, credible and fair election,” he insisted. “We have no reasons to want to rig election; our achievements speak for us.”

“Former President Obasanjo should adjust himself to the reality of imminent defeat that is staring him in the face.”

The APC spokesman made the comments hours after former President Obasanjo accused President Buhari of planning to rig the election scheduled to hold next month.

Obasanjo, who read out an open letter entitled “Point for Concern and Action” to reporters at his residence in Abeokuta, had also alleged that the nation was returning to the era of late General Sani Abacha.

He said President Buhari lacked the capacity to offer Nigeria what it really deserved at this moment.

americanigga:
A former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the presidential election within three hours of voting.

The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State also claimed that the state would be first Buhari will win on February 16.

The lawmaker, who spoke in an interview with journalists in Uyo, was responding to a question on the possibility of violence in Akwa Ibom during the election following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

According to him, the people of the state have already decided who they will vote, insisting that there is no battle ground in the state.

Akpabio said, “APC had taken over Akwa Ibom even before I joined the party. By the time I decided to join APC, by the time I landed at the airport, the whole airport was APC.

“The whole of the airport to the town was APC. The whole of the plaza in Uyo was APC, the jubilation was infectious.

“Women and men were bringing their brooms from under their bed, which means they had been hiding them because of me and they were sweeping the roads.

“A distance of 20 minutes took us over two hours to cover because of the jubilation. I was now saying that so all these people belong to APC.

“When I asked them, they said, “Sir, after you left office, the situation wasn’t the same again. We have moved to APC”. And I asked them when, and they said since 2015.

“If you ask the APC headquarters, they will tell you that we have over 300,000 card-carrying members who joined the party within six weeks.

“When I hear that Akwa Ibom is going to be a battle-ground, I laugh because there is no battle-ground in a state that has already shown direction.

“I can confidently confirm to you that the first state President Buhari will win within three hours of voting in Akwa Ibom.

“It is not because of me but because of the change that the Federal Government has started. The reason I am being attacked is just because I am a leader here and a lot of people came out boldly to associate with APC when I joined, but the people have rejected PDP before I declared for APC

PoliticsNEWS Atiku Opens Up On Real Reason He Visited America by foreshore(op): 1:09pm On Jan 19, 2019
NEWS Atiku opens up on real reason he visited America.

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has penned a long article on why he decided to visit the United States of America.

The former vice-president’s ability to visit the US was shrouded in controversy, over the belief that he was facing corruption charges.

However, Atiku touched down in Washington on Thursday and spoke at the Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

Atiku stated that he travelled to the US, because he has a mission to “create the right economic atmosphere for American investments to return to Nigeria”.

Full text below:

It has become pertinent for me to speak about my ongoing visit to the United States of America, where I have met and I am still meeting with the U.S. administration officials and business leaders travelled to the United States of America because I have a mission, which is to create the right economic atmosphere for American investments to return to Nigeria at a rate and quantum that we had before the current Nigerian administration’s policies almost halted the flow of foreign direct investments to Nigeria.

I am in America because Atiku means jobs.

My reason for running for the office of president of Nigeria and even for going into public service in the first place, is because I believe that Nigeria has what it takes to be the beacon of hope for the black race and a leading nation of reckoning in the international community.

This has not materialised over the course of the last four years because, as Chinua Achebe prophetically said in his 1983 book, “the trouble with Nigeria is the failure of leadership.”

The current Nigerian administration has allowed our relationship with our long-standing friends and partners to deteriorate and this has had unfortunate consequences for our economy.

Foreign relations that had been meticulously and delicately built for decades were allowed to deteriorate because members of the incumbent administration mistook their personal interests as the interests of Nigeria and allowed short term goals to dominate their foreign policies.

New friendships should not be made at the cost of old friendships. It is not an either-or situation. Right from Independence, Nigeria has nurtured a policy of non-alignment. We borrowed from the Lincoln policy of malice toward none and charity for all. Sadly, that policy has suffered major setbacks in the last four years.

As a leader in business, I am cognisant of the fact that both Western and Oriental nations will be making the transition from fossil fuels to electric powered vehicles and other green energies over the course of the next two decades. This means that Nigeria’s oil has a limited shelf life.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed and we must, as a nation, begin to make the transition from an oil economy to a modern one based on manufacturing and value-added agricultural chain.

…my vision is for trade to go both ways. Nigeria has a lot to offer America via her creative industry (Nollywood is the world’s third largest movie industry) and rich mining sectors (Nigeria’s Kaduna State is rich in gold ore). I am also eager to find a market in the U.S. for some of the half a million shoes manufactured in Nigeria’s cities of Kano and Aba everyday.

The message I took to the United States business community is not a new message. In my opinion editorial in the British media (“Beyond Brexit – Nigeria wants a new trade deal with Britain”), I submitted that Brexit is an opportunity for Nigeria and the United Kingdom to have a Big Ambitious Free Trade Agreement.

It is only common sense.

In 2014, the African continent as a whole earned $2.4 billion from coffee grown in Africa and shipped mainly to Europe. That sounds impressive. However, one nation alone, Germany, made $3.8 billion from re-exporting Africa’s coffee in 2014.

As a businessman, I see this and I cannot allow it to continue. It is unconscionable, but situations like these will not stop unless Nigeria and Africa have leadership that thinks business, instead of aid, and capital instead of loans.

Nigeria has, perhaps, the highest populations of youth as a segment of the total population, in the world. Already, we have the unfortunate distinction of being the world headquarters of extreme poverty. We cannot afford business as usual. My single-minded focus is to change this dubious record by transforming Nigeria from a consumer nation to a prosumer nation (a nation that consumes what it produces).

For this to happen, we need U.S. firms who have divested from Nigeria, to return. We need Procter and Gamble to reopen its $300 million Nigerian plant, which it shut down last year. We need General Electric to reverse its $2.7 billion pull out of Nigeria.

And my vision is for trade to go both ways.

Someone somewhere said Nigeria’s youth are lazy. I am one of the single largest employers of Nigeria’s youth and I know that assertion is false. My travels in Europe and America is to sell the Nigeria that I know to the world that does not yet know her. A Nigeria with not just a hardworking youthful population, but a nation with some of the smartest working people on earth. A nation that is open for business and a Nigeria that is much more than oil.

And I am certain that if I am successful in selling this Nigeria to the world, the world will come to Nigeria for business. That is why I am in America. Because I believe in JOBS – Jobs, Opportunity, Being United and Security and it is time Nigeria and all Nigerians finally have the opportunity to realise their true potentials.

Barondenigeria:
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, has assured Nigerians that he will continue to promote national unity, calling on the people to vote for him and other candidates of the APC in the coming general poll.

President Buhari who spoke yesterday in Warri, Delta State, at the flag off of his presidential campaign in the state, assured that his administration will not renege on its campaign promises to the state, stressing that he will always promote security in the region.

President Buhari was received at the Osubi airport by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who introduced him to chieftains of the APC and others at the airport. The governor later left the President and his party men to attend to other state functions.

President Buhari and chieftains of his party visited the Ovie of Uvwie kingdom and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli. Meanwhile, in Benin City, Edo State, it was an unprecedented turnout at the Garrick Memorial College playground yesterday, as President Buhari visited the state, where he promised not to relent in his anti-corruption drive, fighting insecurity and repositioning the economy of the country. We’ve curbedinsecurity in S-East, N-Delta —Buhari Buhari said, “I want to remind you of what this administration has been doing based on the promises we made when we were looking for your votes in 2015.

We will like you to reflect and I want to assure you that we have certainly made progress on security, it was not the same way it used to be in the South East that it is now. It is not the same even in the Niger Delta. We have raised peace. On the economy, we have encouraged farmers. We told the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, they gave soft loans to the farmers and we succeeded in virtually having food security and we are saving hundreds of millions of dollars not even naira by not importing food products.

I congratulate Nigerians for that because they decided to go back to the land. How we’ll manage recovered funds “On fighting corruption, we are doing our best, we are still following the slow system where we have to face people with facts and drag them through the courts and then get them successfully prosecuted and what we realise, this time around, we are selling the assets and putting the money through the Treasury Single Account, TSA, so that nobody can take the assets back to them. “I assure you, sooner than later, I will get the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC to give a comprehensive press conference to tell Nigerians how much we have recovered, and where it is and what we intend to do with it. I am here purposely to thank you and again request you to vote for APC from bottom to top. All APC candidates, please give us the power to control the state assemblies, the National Assembly and the Presidency.

PoliticsRe: How N5bn Cardiac And Renal Facility Was Abandoned In Lagos by foreshore(m): 8:11am On Jan 14, 2019
Aebisco:
March 18, 2015 is a supposed-messianic date to remember as a ray of hope beamed for about 25 million Nigerians (13.9 per cent of the 180 million people) suffering from life debilitating cardiac and renal diseases.

It was a day when the former Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola inaugurated the N5 billion ultra-modern Cardiac and Renal Centre, located beside the General Hospital, Gbagada.

Fashola opened the multi-billion Naira facility amid fanfare with an intrepid perception that it was a right step in the right direction and hope to millions of Nigerians suffering from the diseases.

However, four years down the lane, a centre with a high hope has suddenly become gold rust and now under lock with a smirk look of extinction.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) visit to Gbagada Cardiac and Renal Centre which many have regarded to be one of the best specialist centres in Africa, tells a story of a case of an insidious abandonment.

The locked centre could naturally tell a story of an engendered situation where projects that should have directly alleviated the suffering of the masses could be discontinued.

One can also imagine the cost of this project in terms of financial and socio-economic losses which is simply immeasurable to humanity.

The Gbagada ultra-modern Cardiac and Renal Centre was built with glamour and the hope of providing specialist care to many Nigerians and also help to stem the rising medical tourism associated with renal and cardiac treatments.

The centre was said to be superbly well equipped to global best practices and standards, which boasts of renal support facility features with 24 fully equipped dialysis machines.

It also has an open heart surgery service which is supported by two anesthetic machines, blood and fluid warmers, a cell saver machine, three intra-aortic balloon pumps in addition to numerous other equipment and facilities.

Within the centre are 19 critical care beds (5 ICU beds, 10 Coronary care beds and 4 Recovery room beds), and more importantly, it also claimed to offer a 24-hour service with teams of cardiology and cardiovascular experts.

The Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Prof. Babatunde Green, at the opening said the hospital would provide a world class healthcare delivery to Nigerians typical of Europe and the U.S.

He said that the centre would provide an echocardiography facility which is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic test that uses frequency sound waves to produce images of the heart and its vessels.

“It also provides an electrocardiography, a diagnostic test to detect abnormalities in the heart rhythm.

“This will help patients with complex kidney diseases and urologic conditions to find the full range of treatment options at the cardio-renal centre as our operating time is 24 hours,’’ he said.

While many narratives have been put up for the non-functioning of the more than N5 billion health facility, it is sore taste to spill that those narratives are beyond redemption.

Some said that the centre was fraught with infrastructural defects and lack of working capital by the concessionaire to properly manage the facility.

Some of the blame was put on the concessionaire, handling the centre, Renescor Health LLP, a consortium of international health experts with varied experience in cardiac and renal management.

A source also said that many of the equipment and infrastructure handed over to the concessionaire by the Lagos State Government were found not to be in perfect condition for use.

However, a former worker at the centre, told NAN that excuses for closing up the place was underwhelming compared to the place the centre holds in the history of healthcare in Nigeria.

“Any excuse given for the closure of that place is not tenable anywhere in the world. How can a monument like that turn to a monumental fraud?

“I don’t understand the position of the government about that place; it is something that can be fixed, remember there is a contractor that supplied those equipment, why not set up a commission of enquiry?

“It is like playing with tax-payers money and more importantly dashing the hopes of many Nigerians seeking treatments,’’ he said.

According to a report, these large populations are in dire need of cardiac and renal diseases treatment which we easily say it’s a terminal disease.

This is coupled with the multiplicity of process and high cost of treatment, the centre is a big relief.

But many Nigerians are now left in doubt about the alleged malfunctioning of the equipment and infrastructural defects. It is so because the centre had been used for the treatments the people go abroad to seek.

It is on record that the centre was used by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to treat some kidney patients after it had carried out its first kidney transplant on in its permanent site at Ikeja.

An expert and President of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN), Dr Ebun Bamgboye, at the commemoration of the 2018 World Kidney Day, lamented the rising cases of kidney diseases in Nigeria.

He said that Nigeria was carrying the largest burden of kidney disease in the world, adding that Nigeria recorded 17,000 new cases of kidney failure, while only 2,000 of such cases had access to life saving dialysis.

“In Nigeria it is estimated that every year the incidence of kidney disease is 100 per 1,000,000 population. The number of new cases of kidney failure we see every year in the population of 170 million is 17,000.

“If you put all the patients on dialysis across the nation together, they are less than 2,000, if 2,000 people are only on dialysis and 17,000 needs it, and when they don’t get it they will die.

“You can imagine the number of people dying because they don’t have access to dialysis,’’ he said.

Another germane issue on the incidence of renal treatment is the availability of capable facilities to treat the patients coupled with the high cost of treatment which those affected will have to pay through their nose.

For renal dialysis in Nigeria, patients will have to pay between N30, 000 and N50,000 per session.

Bamigboye also said that the number of Nigerians living with kidney disease is far more than the people with kidney failure.

He mentioned that his private hospital, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, records about 120 new patients every year, with an average of 10 new cases every month.

“The record has 74 per cent are male, and 26 per cent are female and worldwide, between 10 and 15 per cent of individuals have kidney failure.

“Out of the 25 million with kidney failure, about 18, 000 will need dialysis every year (that is about 100 per one million of the population).

“Getting this dialysis has become a problem due to the huge cost involved and lack of nephrologists in the country with the cost of dialysis being about N30, 000 per session.

“Each patients needs about three sessions per week which is almost N100, 000 per week and about N400,000 per month. Not many Nigerians can afford this and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) covers just three sessions of the dialysis,’’ he said.

Bamigboye also posited that there were few nephrologists in Nigeria as the country only has about 160 nephrologists, which is less than one per one million.

“The number of nephrologist in Nigeria is grossly inadequate and unacceptable aside this, dialysis centres are grossly inadequate and found mostly in the urban areas.

“We have about 149 dialysis centre in Nigeria (both private and public), with about 600 dialysis machines. For a country the size of Nigeria, this is grossly inadequate,’’ he said.

Away from the renal care, heart-related disease is another health burden in Nigeria, and statistics have revealed that about 150,000 Nigerians die annually as a result of it.

This is of course alarming with the number expected to increase to 23 million by 2030 if adequate measures are not taken.

Also, 34 per cent of the adult population in Nigeria live with high blood pressure, especially cardiovascular heart disease before the age of 50.

Reacting to the development, Hakeem Bello, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr Babatunde Fashola, noted that the alleged faulty equipment at the Renal and Cardiac Centre was not anything to go by as it was not above the power of the government to fix.

“I believe that if the story making the round that some of the equipment at the Gbagada Renal and Cardiac Centre are faulty is true, it is not beyond what the government in power cannot solve.

“Those errors if actually true can be corrected because the same Commissioner for Health that supervised the hospital is still in government as commissioner.

“When the place was inaugurated, it was a life transmission that everyone can see and there was coverage of the event, all these are on record.

“I can say that even if the building is defective it can be corrected if there is the will to do that instead of finding excuses,’’ he said.

Meanwhile efforts to reach the Lagos State Government officials to offer their side of the story failed.

But if the centre has the capacity to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians health wise, why should it be left by the Lagos State Government to waste?

Government in its wisdom should salvage the hospital from further decay and save the country from capital flight in the guise of medical tourism. No doubt, if the money expended on medical tourism remain in the country, it will boost the economy.

More importantly, government at all levels should begin to invest more in healthcare and ensure that the extant facilities in their care are not only adequately maintained but improve upon. (NAN)

SportsRe: Andy Murray Confirms Retirement Plans In Tears (Photos) by foreshore(m): 11:21am On Jan 11, 2019
Sportdab:
Tennis Legend Andy Murray has announced he is set to retire this year.

The former world No 1 hopes to have one final farewell at Wimbledon, where he is a two-time champion but had to withdraw last year.

The three-time Grand Slam winner had surgery on his hip a year ago but admitted he is still far away from full fitness with the pain greatly affecting his day-to-day life.

Speaking at a press conference, the 31-year-old broke down in tears and struggled to speak as his voice cracked as he addressed a room of journalists at Melbourne Park.

"I’m not feeling good. I’ve been struggling for a long time. Been in a lot of pain for 20 months now.

“Pretty much done everything I could to make my hip feel better.

“Wimbledon is where I would like to stopplaying but I’m not certain I’ll be able to do that. I’m not certain I can play throughthe pain for an other four five months."

Murray played just 14 matches in 2018 having made a long-awaited return in June after almost a year out.

Asked if he will play the Australian Open which begins on Monday, Murray added: “I’m going to play. I can still play to a level. Not a level that I’m happy playing at.

"But it’s not just that. The pain is too much really and I don’t want to continue playing that way."

He added: "During my training block I spoke to my team and told them I can’t keep doing this. I needed to have an end point because I was sort of playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop.

"I’ve spoken to psychologists about it butnothing helps because you’re in lots and lots of pain and you can’t do what you want to do, what you love doing. It’s not enjoyable doing it anymore."

The Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed regret over the violence that broke out at its campaign flag-off on Tuesday, assuring Lagosians that such would not repeat itself in the cause of the campaigns.

The party in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Joe Igbokwe, blamed the unfortunate incident on a disagreement between two factions of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, which they carried into the campaign grounds of the party.

Igbokwe insisted that the APC and its supporters had no hand in the violence.

The statement read: “History was again recorded in Ikeja today (yesterday) as Lagos APC opens its 2019 general election campaigns that clearly and eloquently sent signals out there that the owner of the house is still at home. The organisation, the crowd, the colours, the joy and fun added beauty and class to the carnival which was unprecedented in the history of Lagos politics.

“We only have our teeming supporters and the leadership of the party in the state to thank for displaying absolute trust, loyalty, commitment and affection for the party they have cherished for years and still continue to cherish till date.
