murphyibiam15:
The Government of Benue State has given an appeasement donation of N2 million to the Ebonyi State Government over the recent killing of over six Ebonyians by the Benue people in inter- boundary dispute.

The Benue State Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu, who represented Governor Samuel Ortom, delivered the amount when he led a high powered delegation to Ebonyi State Government House, Abakaliki on Wednesday to condole with the State over the unfortunate incident.

Confirming the development to newsmen at the end of Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Sunday Inyima, explained that the said amount was donated to augment the State’s assistance towards resettlement of the affected families.

Inyima noted that since the beginning of the dispute over 98 years ago, the visit was the first time the Benue State Government has shown great concern over the recurrent loss of lives often recorded along the borders and attributed the development to Governor David Umahi’s approach to crises management.

Inyima, who said the delegation was received by the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Eric Kelechi Igwe, also confirmed that the two parties held brief closed door discussions where far reaching resolutions were reached prior to a comprehensive peace meeting to be held at Abuja on October 29.

Inyima Said: “Let me inform the press and the general public that today, Ebonyi State Government received in audience a very high powered delegation from Benue State led by no less a person the Deputy Governor of that State.

“Their mission in Ebonyi State was to condole with the people of Ebonyi over the gruesome killing of Ebonyi indigenes at the Ohaukwu axis, particularly Ngbo communities of Ukwuagba, Ekwashi and Umuogudu Akpu, where six Ebonyi indigenes were gruesomely murdered under the name of communal inter-state boundary clash.

“It may please you to note that this issue of our boundary problem with Benue State is a thing that has actually lasted for a very long time, dating down to the 1920s.

“But it will also be good to note that since that time to this particular date, there has never been a day that the Benue State Government sent a delegation to come and condole with the people of Ebonyi State.

“May be it is the first time since the inception of that crises.

“On their visit, they brought with them the sum of N2 million, which the Government of Benue State said should be handed over through the Local Government Chairman of Ohaukwu to the individual families that lost their great sons and daughters.

“We met with them in the office of the Deputy Governor and we also agreed and made some resolutions in an informal private discussion with them, which was signed.

“By Monday next week, 29th of October to be precise, we are going to meet with them and the National Boundary Commission Chairman at Abuja to further discussions on this matter, and we are believing that some of the salient issues that we raised today are actually going to help us in the discussion we are going to have in Abuja.

“All these are geared towards ensuring that lasting peace is brought to bear, especially with regards to our borders with Benue State and indeed that with Cross River State.”

Recall that six persons from Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State were last week murdered by some people from Benue State in an alleged unprovoked inter-border attack.

@POLITICSNGR

Nigeria's minister for Transport, Rotimi Amaechi has revealed that the Abuja-Kaduna rail line cannot run faster than 90Km/hr because the ministry does not want locomotives to kill cows.

PoliticsNGR learned that Amaechi made this comment while speaking on the complications the Nigerian government faces while making concessions.

He broke down the various problems being faced by the Country's rail system adding that Nigeria has more than enough to transport via rail.

In his words;

"The reason why we want to go back to narrow gauge is because between Lagos and Kano, we have 30 million tonnes of cargo. Even if you do three rail lines, it cannot be enough.

It took us 14 days to move coaches from Lagos to Abuja; everyday we go and ask, how far, they say we are near Ogun state… 14 days.

But if it were rail, the same day, it will get to Abuja. The kind of construction we are doing is 120 kilometers per hour (Km/h), it is a speed train.

We are doing 90km/h with Abuja to Kaduna, the reason we are doing 90km/h is because there are cows everywhere, and we don’t want to kill cows. The other day they tried 100 and they killed how many cows, and they said ‘you people should replace the cows you killed.

From that day, I have said let us maintain the 90km/h; at 120km/h you get to Kaduna in one hour. You can work in Kaduna and live in Abuja. It was initially one, but now, we have done four locomotives with 14 coaches."

PoliticsRe: Kanu’s Disappearance, Resurfacing Prearranged By DSS – Uwazuruike by foreshore(m): 3:51pm On Oct 22, 2018
Ebullience:
By Chidi Nkwopara, OWERRI.
Ndigbo have been advised to treat the touted disappearance and resurfacing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, as “a non-issue because it was carefully prearranged by the Department of State Security, DSS”.

The protagonist of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, stated this Monday, at a press conference in Owerri, to react to Kanu’s reappearance in Isreal and broadcast.

“Not many of his ardent followers truly know that Kanu is not sincerely working for the Independence of Biafra. His coming to Nigeria, his arrest, detention, trial, release on bail and his alleged disappearance and resurfacing, were all prearranged by the DSS”, Uwazuruike said.

It was the considered opinion of the MASSOB/BIM leader that if Mazi Kanu was sincere, he should have disclosed how he was spirited away from his Afara Ukwu country home, when the soldiers struck.

“How did he disappear from his country home? How did he survive the onslaught, even when he claimed that about 28 people were killed during the military operation in his home? How did he leave Nigeria and what document did he use to traverse all the nations before arriving Israel? We couldn’t have forgotten so soon that the DSS seized all his travel documents”, Chief Uwazuruike asked.

After giving a graphic account of the number of times he was arrested, detained and tried in court, Uwazuruike also reasoned that “a freedom fighter donates his life for the struggle he believes in.

“This is not the case with Nnamdi Kanu. Running away from the struggle means that he is a fake freedom fighter. This young man does not consult anybody and he has no adviser. Kanu erroneously believe that President Buhari can wake up any day and call for a referendum that is not even captured in the Constitution”, Uwazuruike said.

Continuing, the MASSOB/BIM boss recalled that “when Kanu was declared missing, I knew that it was a ruse”, stressing that “when Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State said that Kanu would resurface before the end of the year, he spoke from the point of knowledge and not speculation”.

Directing his mind to some of the directives issued by Kanu in his broadcast, Uwazuruike passionately appealed to Ndigbo to “completely disregard them”.

Answering a question, Uwazuruike said he was aware that the DSS conscripted Kanu to degrade MASSOB and it’s struggle
“Nnamdi Kanu is calling for effective boycott of elections, referendum and sit at home, which MASSOB/BIM abandoned long ago, because of its adverse effects on Ndigbo. These issues are not practicable and the young man does not and cannot have effective control over them”, Uwazuruike said.

While reiterating that Ndigbo disregard the directives, Chief Uwazuruike equally reasoned that “even if the people obey the order, the Nigerian Constitution empowers President Buhari to appoint anybody to run the affairs of any state, where elections were not held”.

PoliticsRe: APC Governors To Remove Oshiomhole As Chairman, Collect Signatures by foreshore(m): 7:56am On Oct 22, 2018
Islie:
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, has hit back at governors of the party that are reported to be moving against him, saying he would not succumb to their antics and impunity.

He said contrary to insinuations by some of them and their allying stakeholders that he was out to liquidate the party, his mission was to galvanise the APC into a disciplined and cohesive platform ready to clinch victory at next year’s general elections.

Oshiomhole’s fight back coincides with the intensification of efforts by governors to remove him from office. THISDAY learnt last night that 15 of 21 governors of the party, being coordinated by one of them from the South-west, are collecting signatures to force a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that would unseat the national chairman.

The governors, multiple sources told THISDAY, would be converging on Abuja tomorrow to finalise their objective.

The party has also explained that it opted for consensus and made some hard choices in a desperate bid to meet the October 18 deadline set for submission of its candidates’ list for elections into the National Assembly.

In a statement yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Simon Ebegbulem, the APC national chairman said while the party would not surrender its functions, which are constitutionally circumscribed, to any other entities, it would always reach out to divergent tendencies and mediate the disparate political camps in the interest of party cohesion.

According to Oshiomhole, stakeholders should be assured that the party is in safe hands as it marches, sure-footedly, to victory in the 2019 general election.

In an apparent response to criticisms coming from some governors elected on APC’s platform, Oshiomhole vowed that only the party, and not pseudo political empires in the states, had the power to superintend the primary elections for the nomination of its candidates in the general election.

He said, “To be clear, Oshiomhole did not become national chairman of the governing party to bring it down a notch from the pedestal of its 2015 electoral victory let alone to preside over its liquidation.

“Rather, his single-minded goal, from the outset of his declaration of interest in the position, was to deploy his capacity in helping to strengthen and reposition the party as a truly supreme and disciplined political entity.”

Oshiomhole who blamed those he referred to as “conservative elements” for spearheading a plot to pass a vote of no confidence against him, said their main grouse was his insistence on party supremacy and discipline.

He noted that before his emergence as chairman, the party was wallowing in impunity and disrespect to laid down rules.

He said he knew from the onset that those who supported the status quo that he supplanted would not cave in easily but will fight back.

According to him, “Although, it might appear fortuitous to some persons that he became national chairman at the threshold of the 2019 general election, the truth is that there is no accident in predestination.

“We must appreciate the fact that it has pleased the Almighty God to place him in the saddle of APC-led leadership at this time for a purpose.”

Oshiomhole said the reforms he planned to bring about in the APC had begun to manifest in its vast flourish and ramifications, through instilling discipline, ensuring party supremacy, promoting due process, dealing with impunity and executive arrogance wherever they manifested to undermine intra-party electoral processes in the states.

“Again, we were not, in the least, deluded that the process of rebranding or rewriting the narrative of the four-year old party would be easy.

What we are witnessing in the APC today is Oshiomhole’s adroit management of the strains and pains that accompany the birth of a resuscitated governing party,” he said.

Referring to the party’s handling of the primary election crises, Oshiomhole said the message was very clear that the party and not pseudo political empires in the states had the power to superintend the primary elections for the nomination of the party’s candidates in the general election.

He said the leadership provided by the party in recent primary elections and the large-scale integrity of the processes were developments that should hence serve as exemplars in the administration of parties.

Oshiomhole also responded to criticism by one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the party, Alhaji Mumakai Unagha, who said the APC could not win under his leadership, describing it as cooked narratives from those who failed to impose their preferred candidates on the party during the nomination process.

He said, “The crime committed by Oshiomhole’s leadership is its disdain for impunity and circumvention of due process perpetrated in some of the states at the pleasure of some influential stakeholders.

“These influential stakeholders, according to grapevine, have begun to mobilise to pass a no-confidence vote on the leadership of Oshiomhole, having failed to impose their preferred candidates on the party in the nomination process.”

Activeman391:
The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, Mrs. Comfort Alhassan, has advised officers of Nigeria Air Force on Quick Response Mission in the council area to avoid illicit relationship with village girls or face the wrath of gods.

Alhassan told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Agatu during the activation of the 21 Quick Response Wing of NAF in Agatu that any illicit sexual relationship with the girls would spell doom for the soldiers.

NAN reports that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, was in Agatu to activate the 21 Quick Response Wing of the NAF situated in the local government to deal with cases of insurgency in the area.

NAN reports that in 2016, the entire the local government area was sacked by herdsmen who forced their way into the place, displaced farmers and set houses ablaze.

The chairman said the advice was imperative owing to the fact that ” your body is not wood, but I advise you not to get swelled by your emotions, if you are in love with them, notify their parents of your intentions, but avoid illicit sex with them”.

She, however, commended the Federal Government for situating the quick response wing of the Air force to her local government council, saying, ” now we can sleep with our two eyes closed”.

She promised to support the soldiers by providing their food needs, adding that “whatever their needs, they should ask of us”.

Alhassan also commended the Federal Government for drilling a borehole within the vicinity of the military facility to supply water to the host community and assured that the facility would be protected.

BusinessRe: Nigerian Traders In Ghana Kick Against Non-compliance With ECOWAS’ Protocols by foreshore(m): 8:29am On Oct 20, 2018
chidima2019:
Recently, a delegation of Nigerian traders in Ghana, led by the president of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association Ghana (NUTAG), Chukwuemeka Nnaji, were in Abuja to appeal to President Buhari, through his Senior Special Adviser on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri- Erewa, to intervene in the ongoing face-off between Nigerian traders in Ghana, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) and the task force, among others, regarding the implementation of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) laws, which has led to the indefinite closure of their shops.

Some of them recounted their ordeal and why urgent action should be taken to restore law and order in the affected markets in the Ashante Region to prevent escalation of the conflict.

Section 27, Subsection 1 of the GIPC law says a person who is not a citizen or an enterprise, which is not wholly owned by citizens, shall not invest or participate in the sale of goods or provision of services in a market, petty trading or hawking or selling of goods in a stall at any place; operate a taxi or car hire service in an enterprise that has a fleet of less than 25 vehicles; operation a beauty salon or barber shop, print recharge cards for the use of subscribers of telecommunication services, produce exercise books and other basic stationary, retail finished pharmaceutical products or produce, supply and retail sachet water and all aspects of pool-betting business and lotteries, except football pool.

It added that the Minister, in consultation with the Board, might, by legislative instrument, amend the list of enterprises reserved for citizens and enterprises wholly owned by citizens.

Section 28 of the GIPC law says,
(1) A person who is not a citizen may participate in an enterprise specified in Section 27 if that person (a) in the case of a joint enterprise with a partner who is a citizen, invests a foreign capital of not less than $200,000 in cash or capital goods relevant to the investment or a combination of both by way of equity participation, and the partner, who is a citizen, does not have less than 10 per cent equity participation in the joint enterprise; or (b) where the enterprise is wholly owned by that person, invests a foreign capital of not less than $500,000 in cash or capital goods relevant to the investment or a combination of both by way of equity capital in the enterprise.

(2) A person who is not a citizen may engage in a trading enterprise if that person invests in the enterprise, not less than $1million in cash or goods and services relevant to the investments.

It was based on issues emanating from the aforementioned sections that is the bone of contention between Nigerian traders, whose country is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and GUTA/member of the task force, who locked up Nigerian’s shops, particularly in the Ashante Region.

Chapter 1 of ECOWAS Treaty said the right of establishment means the right granted to a citizens who is a national of the member state settled or establish in another member state other than his state of origin and to have access to economic activities, to carry out these activities, as well as set up and manage enterprises and particular companies, under the same conditions as defined by the legislation of the host member state for its own nationals.

Nnaji said, “So much money has been paid to Ghanaian authorities in the last two months. We came to Abuja last time with all kinds of receipts, of people paying as much as $1,600 as tax. Those who ought to pay $2,000 per month, they raised it to $5,000, which is unbearable. This is just a shop where you sell your goods. Our losses run into millions of dollars, as about 400 shops affected are under lock and key, while those whose shops are not locked are losing a lot to competitors. Our people are walking with fear on the streets of Accra right now. This is not exaggeration.”

He disclosed that the Act is simply targeting foreigners. “When they say Nigerians should comply with the GIPC law, what they are just saying is that Nigerians should go to Ghana Embassy to obtain a visa before traveling to Ghana, which shouldn’t be so.”

He insisted that Nigerian traders are not contravening any law and it is actually the ECOWAS that is not doing its work by allowing the breach of its protocol on the right of establishment by Ghana.

He recalled that when the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) in Ghana came to his office, he asked what they came to do and they said that they came to find out those who had registered their businesses. “Did we contravene any law? We have all registered our businesses. If there is anybody who did not register, they should follow up on that.”

He said it is very expensive to register a company in Ghana as a Nigerian, as it costs at least $5,000; hence he has advised his members to join hands to register their companies with the appropriate authorities.

On the issue of adulterated drugs, he said Nigerians in the whole of West Africa have the highest control when it comes to drugs, “It is not a country thing; it is an individual. If there is anybody that is found selling adulterated drugs, let the authorities in charge deal with the person according to the law.”

He dismissed allegations that Nigerians were bringing substandard products into Ghana, stressing that when the authorities went to the shops of Ghanaians, they did not find any difference in quality of goods in the shops of Ghanaians and of Nigerians traders. He disclosed that the shops that were locked in Suame were spare parts shops and those who locked those shops were their rivals.

Vice President, NUTAG, Ikechukwu Obiora, regretted that the government was finding it difficult to restore law and order in the affected areas and urged the Nigerian government to come to their aid, as GUTA had given Nigerian traders three months to pack out from the market. “The very few shops that are opened, they coerced them to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that they would leave their market in Kumasi after three months, if not, they will come and lock their shops.”

Secretary General of NUTAG, Evaristus Nwankwo, said what is happening in Ghana is a complete rejection of what ECOWAS stands for, alleging that Ghanaians are using the GIPC law to take Nigerians off trading in Ghana. “They are demanding so many things. Even those who have those things they say they will not trade because their shops are located in areas exclusively meant for Ghanaians. Even in the Ashanti Region where they said the shops have been reopened is untrue. “The Police came and opened some Nigerian’s traders shops, but immediately they left, GUTA thugs came there and broke one of the traders’ head. They used welding machine to break those shops. Our members reported to the Police and the Police didn’t do anything.”

“In spite of all these provocations, we have been telling our members to maintain civility and their maturity is very commendable.”

National Secretary of GUTA and 2nd National Organiser of the Ghana Task Force, Jeff Kwame Gyasi, told The Guardian that Ghana has several laws governing and regulating the retail trade which have been grossly abused by foreigners across board; hence the need to sanitise the system. “For the last 30 years, trading associations have had to fight successive governments over negligence of its own laws. The core mandate of the task force was to educate, guide and help foreigners be compliant to all the laws governing trading. We are not treating anybody different from the others. The ECOWAS citizens have advantage over the non-Africans because of the sub-regional integration and the ECOWAS protocols. We only want them to abide, follow and obey whatever we the citizens do. Moreover, we expect them not to do what they cannot, will not and shall not do in their various countries.”

He emphasised that not only Nigerians are affected, just that they are in the greater number in Ghana, saying, “There are around five million Nigerians in Ghana. The second largest numbers of foreigners are the Chinese, who are engaged in galamsey (illegal mining) and most of them have been deported back to China.” He added that shops of those who have been compliant are opened, even from 60 per cent tax compliant have been opened.

Meanwhile, Dabiri- Erewa disclosed that she had met with the officials of NUTAG and was going to present their petitions to the President, saying, “Everything has to be done to resolve this issue as they are ECOWAS citizens. It is a different thing if they committed a crime but these are just traders who have lost so much since July. I learnt a woman even committed suicide because of this issue.” She appealed to the Nigerian traders not to take the laws into their hands.

“I feel sorry for them. If Ghana doesn’t want them, just tell them you don’t want them, rather saying you will do this today and you don’t do it. Our President spoke with the Ghanaian President and the latter assured that the shops would be reopened. In fact, on September 27, instructions were given that the shops be reopened.” She regretted that the instruction wasn’t obeyed, saying, “There is a bit of political undertone, but I believe Ghana’s president will do the right thing.”

According to philanthropist Ukan Kurugh, the young girl battled with Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and other health complications at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, before her death yesterday.

51-year-old lecturer who is said to be the Head of Department, Catering and Hotel Management at the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Benue State, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja and his son, Victor Inalegwu Ogbuja, a final year student of Animal Production at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, consistently molested little Ochanya since she was 8.

The autopsy report has also affirmed the cause of her death to be sexual molestation of a minor, according to reports.

Ochanya, was living with the family due to her relationship to the man's wife (Mrs. Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja) who is her cousin before she became an object of sexual satisfaction for the father and son..

It was gathered that the girl would take ill but it was difficult for the hospitals in Ugbokolo to detect exactly what was wrong even when she collapses occasionally.

Ochanya, after serious interrogation revealed how long the molestation had been taking place and how she was threatened against her life if anyone got to know of what was happening. She explained that she was forced with drugs which made her not to be very conscious of what happened.

Lajet:
The National Council of Muslim Youth Organizations, NACOMYO, has faulted the first appointments made by newly-inaugurated Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The religious youth group said the appointment was lopsided and totally marginalized the Muslim community in Ekiti State.

The organization said this during a protest held at the Central Mosque, Ado Ekiti, on Thursday.

The Coordinator of NACOMYO in the state, Tajudeen Olutope Ahmed, pointed out that excluding Muslim from the first three appointments announced by the governor was “shocking and highly disturbing to all Muslim in the state.”

Fayemi had yesterday announced the appointments of Abiodun Oyebanji as Secretary to the State Government; Biodun Omoleye as Chief of Staff and Yinka Oyebode as his Chief Press Secretary.

NACOMYO said Muslims in the state constitute about 40 per cent of the population, adding that the governor was given their total support by voting massively for him during the governorship polls.

They said, “The exclusion of Muslims from the entire membership of the core principal officers of this administration is therefore worrisome, unjust, condemnable and unacceptable. We see it as a calculated attempt to exclude Muslims from the fundamental aspect of decision making process in Ekiti State.

“The exclusion of the Muslims in this regard is a violation of the fundamental objectives and directive principles of state policy as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

“The exclusion of Muslims from the core principal appointments of Dr. John Kayode Fayemi is a derogation of the motto of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as provided in Section 15 (1) of the 1999 constitution (as amended). Rather than projecting ‘Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress’; the recent appointments made by the Government will breed “disunity, commotion and backwardness.

“We also call on the governor to ensure inclusion of Muslims in all appointments to be made in future at both state and local government levels this will pave the way for the reign of justice, equity and peace in the state.”
