If Rohr can't get another left footed left back, then let's continue with Aina there....he is better than Collins and Idowu combined Is that not what you people said about Aina? Most didn't rate him here. |

Mujtahida: The comparison is in respect of Osimhen's potential.
It's time somebody surpassed Rashidi abeg. If almost 20 years we are still stuck with Rashidi' s record, it means we are not making progress. Every Nigerian kid has potential but it's not enough. So, it should not be used to bring some players into the National team as we have seen over the years in the name of'special talent' Well, I am not against him surpassing it. |

OMANBALA1: Osimhen call to be included in the team was based on the premises of his status as a special talent not because he was a regular/average striker with potentials. We maintained from the onset he was a special talent like Nacho and Nwakali were once. Awoniyi never belonged to that class and you can see it once more by his shoddy display against SA. Who takes your opinion seriously, huh? Using special talents as an excuse tantamounts to substly prejudice and discrimination. People don get sense pass dat yeye 'special talent' wayo. |

chrisooblog: only one important match which he didn't start. the match against south africa was played in june at the tale end of the bundesliga season when osimhen was getting back from injury. he was involved in the last games of the season for wolfsburg so saying he had no game time before the south africa match is false. when he then couldn't stake a claim in his club the following season he was then logically not called up
sorry etoo wasn't exceptional then. 3 goals in 23 games in the spanish second division and get taken straight to world cup. walcott that was signed by arsenal in january of 2006 and didn't kick a single ball in anger before being taken to the world cup? i hear you Osimhen didn't kick a ball in professional football before he was called to the National team against Tanzania. Whereas, Eto and Walcott already did before they were called to the National team. So, don't compare. Osimhen only played two matches in the Bundesliga before he was called the second time. He played against Togo in a friendly before he later played against South Africa. Osimhen never deserved to be called as at that time because he did nothing to deserve it after just two games all seasons. You think goals is what makes some players exceptional? Eto's performance earned him a loan from La Liga 2 to a La Liga team. African for that matter. Maybe you were not aware. What did Osimhen do then? Absolutely nothing. EOD |

chrisooblog: Osimhen at the time was a youth prospect who was called up for a dead rubber match against tanzania at the end he wasn't even in the final squad for the match. it's not unusual for countries all over the world to call up talented players to blood them early into the national team. what did samuel etoo do before cameroon took him to the 1998 world cup in france? or theo walcott that england took to germany in 2006?
Yes he hasn't gotten to Yekini's heights yet but who knows if he can't even be better? time can only tell Osimhen was called up for important matches. He played against South Africa in AFCON qualifiers. How can you compare players that played regularly in a league with one who didn't get game time? Eto played regularly in Spanish second division and he was exceptional while Walcott played in the Championship. Can you compare that with Osimhen who didn't have game time? |

Icon4s: Sadiq Umar to me is not an upgrade from PA Onuachu. Infact same reason I don't rate Onuachu applies for Sadiq.
Considering the abundance of wingers who are mostly ahead of Olayinka i will consider fielding him in a striking position. Iheanacho, could come in handy if he can get more playing time either at Leicester or from a January move . Okereke comes next for me but I think he is still very much work in progress. Dessers well, also coming up but he is behind Okereke for me. The other strikers have not done enough (IMO) to be considered. Sadiq Umar is totally a different player from Onuachu. He needs to move to a better league. Okereke is a team player and also good at scoring goals. Rohr should give him the chance to see what he can do. I don't think Peter Olayinka is good in that position. |

chrisooblog: great result from the team. yes you might say it's just "Lesotho" however the manner that we battered them was impressive. This is what the Super Eagles of the 90s always did. once they faced a team they were clearly better than they would absolutely beat them into submission no room for any yeye upset. Didn't watch the match was at an engagement but even the MC of the event was letting us know what was up telling us scores at a point
Osimhen, Osimhen, Osimhen i remember when i was defending his call up when rohr has just taken over. i remember how i said he's a diamond in the rough who with time and patience could metamorphose into a beast of a striker for the National team. i remember saying that even the great Yekini took time to hit his stride. i remember forgiveness attacking me saying i was delusionally comparing victor to yekini. today it now looks plausible. Osimhen is most definitely not the finished article but he's making big strides game by game. before it was he falls down easily, next he's not strong to hold up play, can't compete against "elite defenders" little by little the boy is answering his critics. i pray he maintains that unquenchable hunger to improve and do well that the best players always display.
defence still needs a defender who can read and snuff out danger effectively. Ekong is my guy but he is still the front foot kind of defensive enforcer. same with omeruo. balogun who reads the game well is not the fastest at his best and his lack of game time and advancing age have affected him badly. hope we can find one asap with leon's game reading ability but with requisite pace and physicality.
enough has been said about how to address the fullback situation so i wont add to ILLICITblood's well written opinion on the matter.
midfield is almost their if the nff can pull off getting ejaria and ebere eze to don the GWG omo na better jollof our midfield go just dey dish out.
goalkeeping position is still not safe with akpeyi. i think this is the time for rohr to be brave and put faith in whoever is the best nigerian keeper in the NPFL and give him a run of games at least until okoye matures or uzoho is fit.
Supernerd has spoken well and analysed extensively the back up options to osimhen. whoever is in form or the next best person should be auditioned until it's eventually sorted.
My opinion on our coaching situation has not changed. rohr might not be the best tactically but overall his pluses over ride his negatives. if the nff is not sure of getting a good tactician if they decide rohr should go please they should let him be. better a moses that took you out of egypt going towards the promised land than some false Joshua who will lead you back to bondage Osimhen didn't deserve to be called as at that time he struggled in the Bundesliga. His case is not different from Awoniyi who is also struggling in the same league but nobody thinks he's good enough. How then was Osimhen good enough as at that time? You can't still compare Osimhen with Rashid Yekini except he starts scoring like him. He is still far away. |

TheSuperNerd: The Bank-on Candidates to be Osimhen's genuine back-up especially as regards how we play in attack now...
The "bonafide" options:
- David Okereke
- Sadiq Umar
- Peter Olayinka
- Cyriel Dessers
- Kelechi Iheanacho (once that January move happens and he gets playing again and keeps showing good form)
The Dark horse Option(s); In with a chance probably in the long run if they step things up:
- Stephen Odey
- Josh Maja
- Taiwo Awoniyi
The "Manage-manage/mediocre" options (Not suited to how we play in attack):
- Ebere Paul Onuachu
- Simy Nwankwo
- Anthony Ujah Sadiq Umar seems to be the best option though he is not playing in a top league. Followed closely behind by Okereke based on club form. I don't think Rohr rates the Dutch league else Dessers should have been the number one bonafide option. However, if Kelechi, Maja and Awoniyi who are in better leagues get to play and score goals consistently for one month, forget those bonafide options ever making the team ahead of them. In fact, Kelechi will be the first to regain his place in the national team ahead of everyone here due to..wetin we know but I don't know if there situation will ever change. NB: Peter Olayinka is better on the LW. |

Joebie: defensively he is suspect to me. I don't even know what's Idowu's best position. Since the Argie friendly game I've hardly been impressed with him. He reminds me of a versatile Etebo in this regard. But the latter, I can at least identify his strengths. He is good at ball holding/dribbling. Collins is not a bad player though. But we want excellence. The good thing is that we have options to consider in makeshifts. Looking for a pure lefty LB will be "hard". We can't have what we don't have unless we want to give the local boys a try.. haha.. Over to Rohr Rewatch the match against Argentina at the world cup then you will accept he is better than Collins defensively. Okoroji is a natural LB. Rohr should try him out. Another player i would have suggested is Uduokhai but I don't know his situation regarding playing for us. |

Very impressive scoreline though it could have been more than that due to missed chances. However, the team still lacks in some certain areas. Especially, the wing backs, where we were exposed several times and conceded the first goal from the right back.
Aina should be moved back to his natural position while we look at Chima Okoroji for redemption at the LB. Pending the time we try him, Idowu should be allowed to play on the LB. He is better than Collins both defensively and offensively.
Rohr should also look for a back up for Aina and Oshimen. I suggest Kingsley Ehizibue be given a look at. He seems to be more attack minded than Ebuehi. I have not written off Ebuehi oooo.
On the other hand, we need a better back up for Oshimen. We don't need to realize or start looking for one during crises.
Moreover, Iwobi's position needs a better player. |
