AutosRe: Thermostat In Vehicles by fotodaddy: 12:16pm On Apr 29, 2008
ahh BLACKMAN

nkc has just described how the electric coolant fan works.

All IC engines have an optimum working temperature. The job of the thermostat is to get to this temperature as fast as possible and then to maintain this temperature.

Meanwhile there are two "Thermostats" in engines which has electric coolant fans. The first is a mechanical one which actually seals the coolant in the engine and physically prevents it from going to the radiator. (This is the one that our road side mechanics usually remove). As the engine gets hot, it opens up and allows the coolant to flow to the radiator. If this flow is insufficient to keep the coolant at the set temperature, the the electrical thermostat comes in and puts on the coolant fan. (The coolant fan just blows air over the radiator and brings the temperature back down.) in cold countries, it can be so cold that you dont ever use the coolant fan. Infact, people actually get extras to cover up the radiator and prevent cooling since its so cold.

If you have a faulty mechanical thermostat, a sign will be overheating. as the coolant is prevented from circulating. OR over cooling as the engine never warms up to its optimum operating temperature.

In all cases, its best to have a hot engine at its optimum operating temperature. as this means less friction, better combustion etc.

braindrain:
thanks for the advice sir. I do appreciate, but I am already riding like the GHOST RIDER! call it flair! I am checking the website out and planning on buying some gear by the end of today, Tanx bro.
I hope you understand that with riding it is not a matter of IF I crash but WHEN I crash embarassed

Also I pray that as you ride like Ghost Rider, you don't become a ghost very soon. embarassed

A friend of mine who has been riding for quite a while just crashed his 2 month old HAYABUSA yesterday into CHEVRON roundabout. He is very experienced and had an R1 before this bike (which he bought for close to 3M). Things happen very quickly on a bike and if you think you have mastered it, then thats the time to stop riding. Take care o!! undecided

AutosRe: Please Help Me by fotodaddy: 8:12am On Apr 27, 2008
I wonder i you will fiind a 2000 car with mileage as low as 50K (usually you can expect to see from 10K t0 15K average mileage per year)

I just sold my 2002 with 60something MILES (not kilos) for 1.6M I bought the car in January for over 2.0M.

Go to www.1000carsales.com and spend some time there. It might help you get a feel of the budget. You can also do a search on nairaland to see what other's have posted.
AutosRe: Honda Accord For Sale by fotodaddy: 7:59am On Apr 27, 2008
chikeze, e be like say you no go get the money wey you dey find. You know say second hand price, na market dey call am.

You have also spend quite some dough doing the car up. But I can guarantee you; no one will pay for those things. So my suggestion is
1. take out the tires and rims and sell them separately. Maybe you will get 100K for them. You can put the old ones back
2. take out the fancy radio, nobody will pay extra dough to make a phone call through the radio when they are holding the phone, and put the old radio back in. Maybe you can sell it for 20K

Lower your price to like 650K cos the car is clean but be ready to come down even lower if you see someone with cash. And at the end you should get close to the 750K you want.

All the best

Car TalkRe: Any Biker In The House? Let's Compare Notes People! by fotodaddy: 8:52pm On Apr 26, 2008
OHHHH!!!! shocked

You need to be VERY careful. What you have is like trying to learn how to juggle balls using running chainsaws. Do you have gear!!! If not the dont even think of riding. The minimum is a helmet and that is a must.

Check out www.metallichorses.com for gear

Talk to the guys in pitlane (advert on metallic's website), Mike and Jide. I am sure they'll be able to give you some pointers. But No helmet no ride.

You can also come over to Ikeja and I will be glad to help you get started grin

Oya show us this super clean CRV grin
AutosRe: Tracking Device Or Comprehensive Insurance? by fotodaddy: 9:59am On Apr 25, 2008
@waoosa
Congrats!!! They say good things coe to those who wait!! From myexperience, the bottom line is who you know. This will either speed things up or not. Generally, for a car thats stolen the insurance coy have to be convinced that it canot be recovered before settling your claim. This is done via the police. I have a friend who waited for 6 months for his cheque. Another 8 weeks. Personally, I havent had any of mine stolen. And yes 5% takes care of it. (there are some deductions etc) but its nothing compared to the 2.5. So eventually you will be walking away with something like 2.2 to 2.3

@gaskinachi
My sentiments exactly! " tracking device huhhuh" angry Complete wast of dough. More of effizzy than anything worth doing.

nkc, you do start to dey worry siena again lipsrsealed why now?? undecided

Make you take am easy o!!! you go get high blood pressure at this rate!!! God forbid make that car get scratch, then wetin go happen to you??

I had exactly the same problem with my furst pathfinder. Block catalysts and tremendous loss of power. Removed the catalyst and I could not beleive the change. The check engne light was still on (since the probes were probably damaged already) but there was nothing but improvment in the power of the car. Eventually, I removed the dash board and disconnected the light grin. You know now; God pass them. Alls well that ends well!! wink
AutosRe: Tracking Device Or Comprehensive Insurance? by fotodaddy: 9:28am On Apr 25, 2008
bros Sheni,
I no give two hoots to recover a stolen car. Which one be my own. Insurance go give me new one.

I understand the hype about the tracking devices. And in a developed society where there is power and "network" and the whole country is mapped etc these things work very well. But in Naija, our environment will challenge the latest gizmo.

You see the fact is that in Naija, anything goes. So you get a tracking device. In whose interest is it anyway?? Away, the insurance companies lower your premiums if you have such a device. Even a face off radio goes to lower your premium. Here, you have to do everything yourself. Everybody to him own. As for me and my hose hold, when I insure my cars comprehemsively, I dont give a fig if its get stolen or not. So why should anyone care if their car is stolen. With a comprehensive cover its definetely not a loss to you. And like I said, if or when my car gets stolen, then thats just the perfect thing for me. Cos 1 to 2 months later I get a new one. grin

nkc, everyone is lookig for a deal. I use sovereign trust and I have come to understand that here, the service you get from a bank, insurance coy etc, is directly proportional to who you know there. I have no issues claiming on my policies. Infact I changed my windscreen cos it had a small crack on it in 4 days from invoice of dealer to insurance cheque. I didnt lift a finger. they came, took photos, and brought my cheques QED

My suggestion is to talk to them. Squeeze them now, even before the car comes so you can see you choice. Me I dey give them wahala. I get case for court against the German government, na insurance coy for Naija I no fit handle?? wink

God pass them!!
AutosRe: Tracking Device Or Comprehensive Insurance? by fotodaddy: 8:16am On Apr 25, 2008
ol boys make I tell una one latest gist about this tracking thing;

These tracking things work with the GSM networks. My wife works with a GSM coy that offers this to the tracking providers. Na so the boys take person car and wife last sunday in owerri. Till today, neither car nor wife has been seen or tracked!!! lipsrsealed

The issue is that the networks are so poor that the efficency of the tracking device is greatly compromised. And if thats the cost (150K etc) I will go for comprehensive cover everytime. Infact I am happiest if my car gets stolen. Thats just an opportunity to get a new car wink

My insurance coy does 3- 5% of the insured value as premium so for a 2.5M car thats like 125K max. And that covers accidents as well theft. so think am well.

Siena, I just dey try you!!! grin

But I guess you're right. I stand corrected tongue
Car TalkRe: Where Can One Buy Premium Fuel ( High Octane )? by fotodaddy: 9:38am On Apr 24, 2008
Siena, I beg to disagree. Leaded fuel can damage valves and valve seats which are designed for unleaded fuel. This has something to do with the special metal coating thats on them which cant tolorate lead. This does not apply to all makes and brands but applies non the less.

I know you know what I am talking about. grin
Car TalkRe: Where Can One Buy Premium Fuel ( High Octane )? by fotodaddy: 8:43am On Apr 24, 2008
Surely, it is not possible!!!

nkc, I think your best bet if to but "octane booster" additives and pour into your tank as you fill up.

Another thing you should brace up for is that fuel here is leaded while your car is designed to be used with unleaded fuel. The least of the issues with this is a poisoned catalyst and the most could be engine damage!! sad
Car TalkRe: Motor Accidents You've Watched Or Experienced? by fotodaddy: 11:54am On Apr 22, 2008
On a bike, I can tell you there is no time to think about what would or would not have been.

200km/h on third mainland. A change of lane from the slow to the fast to overtake a truck. Too late!! I realize the truck is overtaking a slow car that is on the fast lane. Two choices; slam into the slow car OR try to stop without going into it's boot. Settle for the second.

Pull the anchors and promptly fly over the handlebars. Land on the road with the back of my head and my shoulder. Thank God for fast guardian angles that can keep up with my speed!!!! grin , And a helmet worth 50K which breaks on impact but saves my skull, body armour and gloves that save me from needing mutliple skin drafts.

Walk away with a broken clavicle and a bruise the size of a Naira coin. And a lesson in in-appropriate speed!!! lipsrsealed

No fear, no why me?, no flash of my life before my eyes, no time for anything smiley

8 weeks to get back on the bike grin, 2 - 4 weeks to regain my confidence cheesy lets ride!!! grin

Everyone's a critic!!

@damola
A beg make you read your mail well well and deal with Jenju on your own thread and in your personal emails. I don't thing people reading this thread are interested in knowing if you have commitments or not.

You can always start a new thread and call it "My other commitments before I get a z4" grin

Yes Jenju, you are right. I am sorry, I actually missed that. So we wait.

But I noticed you are working at getting brand new ones?? Generally, Bike depreciate quite quickly and my thinking was that to get a fairly used one will come out with significant savings?? But I leave it all to you and we will see what will happen.

Thanks grin
