Edo Election: President Buhari gives Oshiomhole marching orders

There appears to be an uneasy calm as President Muhammadu Buhari has given marching orders to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki as the APC candidate in the forthcoming election.

Oshiomhole who met with Buhari yesterday evening was reportedly told frankly that Godwin Obaseki should be allowed to continue his good works in office.
According to insiders, Buhari’s decision was informed by the various security reports which favours Mr. Godwin Obaseki far ahead of the other aspirants jostling for the ticket with him. Some close associates of the President were also said to have mounted pressure on him to impress his preference on the APC Chairman to avoid any repeat of the “Zamfara treatment” in the Edo election.

Sources close to the Presidential Villa further revealed that the Presidential directive did not go down well with Mr. Oshiomhole as all the complaints he brought against Obaseki were rebuffed by the President.
Eyewitnesses say Oshiomhole was seen leaving the meeting in low spirits and refusing to acknowledge salutation from anyone.
Political strategists observing the development say there’s little Oshiomhole can do against the emergence of Governor Obaseki as he must not be seen violating the wish of the Commander-in-Chief. They however cautioned that the Obaseki camp must not think it is yet Uhuru as future political landmine might be planted on the way for them.

Ize-iyamu sets to pick SDP's nomination form, as the earlier plan by Adams Oshiomhole to use him in replacing incumbent governor Godwin Obaseki in the forthcoming Edo state governorship election, has been liquidated with the meetings between Buhari and APC's leaders, in what seems like an endorsement for Obaseki by the APC's governors and president Buhari on Monday. This development suddenly truncated the hope and aspiration of Ize-iyamu, whom Oshiomhole had contracted, to execute his plans of removing Obaseki from Edo government house come 2020 election.



Thus, Ize-iyamu who had already bought the APC nomination form for N22.5 is demanding for a refund and planning a move to SDP, knowing that there is no hope for him again in the APC, with the endorsement of Obaseki by Buhari. Also, Dr Odubu, against earlier expectation has gone ahead to collect APC's nomination form, a move that reflects the crack in the pro-Oshiomhole's Edo APC faction, who are supposed to drive the Ize-iyamu aspiration to pick the party's ticket.


Added to this is the insistence of APC Edo state that Ize-iyamu is not a registered member of the APC as his name is not in the party's register of Ize-iyamu's ward. And INEC having requested for the list of Edo APC delegates for the primaries from the party, with Mr. Aselm Ojezua an Obaseki's loyalist, being the chairman of Edo APC; it means Ize-iyamu has way to get his name into the party's register, which disqualifies him from even seeking ticket for election under the APC.

There have been a fight between APC Edo and APC national over what mode of primaries election to adopt, in picking the party's candidate. While APC national, represented by the NWC under Oshiomhole leadership are in support of direct primaries, APC Edo who is solidly behind Obaseki, opted for indirect primaries. Therefore, Obaseki's endorsement by both the APC's governors and Buhari, means a harmonized decision will now determine what happens on June 20, 2020, being the date the NWC has fixed for the party's primaries.

However, report coming from Ize-Iyamu's camp is that he has concluded plans to move to SDP, but not without first getting his refund from the APC. But he must have to do fast, with regards with obtaining the SDP's nomination form, as to meet up with the INEC's deadline for submission of nomination form.
