To enter med school, is not an easy feat, so we expect those that make it, to be the best anyway. The REASONS given so far is salary is not enough, this is not enough. It is all GREED.
EVEN if government increase salary, can it stop THE RELOCATION? NO!

I calculated per year. Since you feel so strongly, u can go to school and study medicine since its a cake walk and graduate then come and collect 200k as salary. No matter how you rant on here, Doctors will still relocate. When u put all those stupid conditions on the course, they wiol simply go and study it elsewhere. 'Worth' for all practical purposes is determined by what your training and skill set will attract in other countries.

Perhaps you can ask also:

"How much are primary/secondary school teachers worth?" Is it the 30k-50k or so they are being paid? By the way many of them hold a bachelors degree.
"How much are university teachers worth?" Is it the 120k or so that PhD holders are being paid? By the way you get PhD after MSc which you get after first degrees including MBBS.
"How much are our lawyers worth?" Is it the 30k-50k many of them are being paid? By the way after a 5-year bachelors degree, they still have to undergo law school training which on the average costs betweek 300k to 500k.

Needless to say, the list is endless, and all these categories of people are paid infinitely much more than anything Nigeria is offering them.

Expand the primary care to include more allied healthcare professionals and ad hoc staff. Introduce certification courses (1-3 years) that individuals with natural and life science university/polytechnic education such as microbiology, zoology, botany, biochemistry, science laboratory technology etc can undertake to make them function in certain basic areas of health... Most of the health burden in the country concerns basic complaints and illnesses like malaria, minor skin infections, candidiasis and the likes... Nigeria should leverage on graduates with degrees in life sciences, train them to attend to these basic areas of care.. These specially certified individuals will not practice alone but will be affiliated with specially accredited pharmacies, nursing homes, medical laboratories etc that will function as special primary health care units... And as a rule disallow these basic conditions from being handled at the tertiary health facilities who will only attend to emergencies and referrals.

We have special situations in Nigeria and we should stop copying the rich countries in the way we do things. The fact is, Nigeria cannot afford to pay any one (doctors, etc) what they are worth. We all claim that we are rich as a country, I hate to burst your bubbles by telling you that even as a country we are miserably poor. Check our GDP/revenues, and compare the figures with what some mega corporations like Apple (not even countries now) make. We are phucking poor, and that's for a fact. And the only way to get out of that is for the Nigerian economy to become well-suited and conducive for private businesses. Paying professionals millions will not solve our problem, it will simply deepen the cycle of nonsense.

Oh, that I know.

They we should start CASTRATING these greedy DOCTORS than run away when they are needed the most!

But DOCTORS from public schools work with those from private ones. What is the difference? They take the same MEDICAL licensure exams. Only the prepared one passes the exam regardless of quality of education!

people like you always think you know. do you know how much medical education is in the Western world?

you pay 50k dollars a year for the same medical education for 4 to 5 years. that's is around 20 million naira every year!
in Nigeria, you medical fees is not more than 3 million NAIRA a year in private institutions which are even expensive.

Government doesn't subsidize the training of doctors. I don't know where you got that from. Their tuition fees are one of the highest in the Nigerian educational system. The reason why Nigerian doctors are favored abroad is because they still have to write and pass stringent exams despite our terrible academic system and so when they come abroad they tend to do great. There was once a news here on nairaland about a doctor who used slippers to make a neck brace. Only a Nigerian doctor can improvise with such ingenuity.

this is HOW we catch you people. 1.6m is about 140k a month. 600k annual rent is about 55k a month. you are left with 100k a month after deductions. child school fees and the others is only per term, so let's say 50k a term, so that's 100k a year per child. you are left with 1.1m.

what else? utilities na nonsense you dey talk. who pays 100k a month for light? water is free. security? YOU BE king?
you see, you DOCTORS want to live like KINGS. THAT'S THE main problem. you have ENOUGH money. it's is only GREED that's behind this.

lol. naa. explain how it will be enough. especially if you live in a city like lagos. 200k a month is 2.4m a year. take home will be around 1.6m house rent takes at least 600k. school fees and child expenses takes about 400k. 2 kids. utilities take about 100k. light , water, security , Internet, phone. Healthcare for both parents will take another 100k. how much is left. it works for single people or two spouses that make about the same amount of money for them to have a semblance of life. also cuz of the type of job, they need house helps and possibly cooks if they have kids.

those in IT earn way more than that and they are ain't in high pressure life critical roles.

People think this is a joke It's a very serious issue. My wife was among the 58 doctors who were refused travel last month, but she finally travelled 2 weeks ago to London by flight with some others provided by their employer. I'm now left with my 2 children hoping to join her soon. I feel bad for this country because what will now happen to the common man out there if all the qualified doctors leave!!

They cannot. Simply because there are no student loans, no equipped labs and equipment at teaching hospitals.

Also if you make it massively expensive, only rich students can afford it or simply prefer to go abroad and do it since the fees will be at par. We do not have infrastructure for student loans.

The simple issue is to fix the country. All sectors are impacted when security is not taken seriously and the government are hell bent on looting the country dry with no investment in anything.

There is no reason to stay. What exactly will 200k per month do for anybody in a high stressful job as healthcare? Nothing. You can have you and your family study it and graduate and earn the salaries.

because any SERVANT can be trained!
