joker5180: ECG doesnt diagnose 'cardiomegaly' per se however it diagnose 'left ventricular hypertropy' right ventricular hypertropy' or 'left atrial hypertropy'. cardiomegaly is seen on CXR as an increase in cardiothoracic ratio usually >50%. echocardiograpy will differentiate between a 'functional' hypertropy as in AHS and a'pathological' hypertropy. but can nigerian army use ECHO to screen candidates? i doubtyea sure but you understood what i meant. In either case you get LVH. How many cardiologists dey the whole army? That option of echo to screen candidates is probably not ever gonna happen.... |
emmanuel4fire: Lets always use medical terms properly with sound knowledge of what it means. For example someone made mention of cardiomegaly and was saying something else.sorry but where did u bag your MD? I'm wondering hw many cases of cardiomegaly you've seen in 'truck and wheel barrow' as you have mentioned.... |
idris4r83: There's a medical condition called athletic heart syndrome (AHS). It is common to athletes that undergoes strenuous training. It is not a disease but an adaptation of d heart to pump blood efficiently to the body. It causes thickening of the left ventricle of the heart. My point here is that in an electrocardiogram result it is difficult to distinguish it from a serious heart disease. doctors let's discuss dismy brother i agree with you. ECG will probably not be able to correctly distinguish between someone with athletic heart syndrome and cardiomegaly due to long standing hypertension for example. In the setting of an office based practice, both are easily distinguished by history alone but in the setting of a screening exercise bros, na only Jesus wey fit help you. |
idris4r83: ESC textbook of cardiovascular medicine. John cammmy brother, medical information comes out faster than new editions of cecil or harrisons' can hit the market. Every med student out there knows the effect of prolonged aerobic endurance on the heart...cardiac muscle is a permanent tissue so can only undergo hypertrophy and not hyperplasia...and it does the former when exposed to the pressure of exercise as seen in body builders and professional athletes, footballers etc. Furthermore, a 400level med student also knows that athletes also get bradycardia....all the above pathophysiological changes have been termed athletic heart syndrome.... hope u do know that they are at risk of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy? |
joker5180: am hearing this term for the first time, pls where did u get it from?athletic heart syndrome...cardiomegaly (due to hypertrophy) & bradycardia...first time i'm hearing the term but always knew about the cardiovascular changes that occured in active sportsmen. Anyway, tnx poster for d info on AHS...but how many athletes are physically active? guess it's gonna be a small percentage... |
joker5180: but why PCV when you can get anaemia corrected any time? what of Hb genotype? how do they check for 'pile', history or rectal examination? i cant wait to see young lads lined up for DRE, lolzmy brother i dont know o. i am just a messenger here |
Phellow Bloody sivilians, we the feople have decide to post some of the tests you should do befua you buy za pin code. RVS,HBSag, Urinalysis,CXR,ECG,PCV,RBS and your physical examination( BP,PR,Height, weight and your foot) In plain english, 1. HIV 2. Hepatitis B 3. Urinalysis (the concern is for proteins and glucose in your urine. the former may be functional if trace bt this is screening where no one wants to know whether you get orthostatic proteinuria or not; more significantly proteinuria suggests kidney disease while glycosuria or glucose in urine suggests diabetes mellitus) 4. Chest x-ray for cardiomegaly (an effect of long standing hypertension), or other skeletal deformities, lung disease etc 5. Electrocardiogram: to detect a wide range of heart diseases. 6. Packed cell volume: to detect for anemia 7. Random blood sugar is a blood test for diabetes And don't forget ....the almighty pile.... If you do all the above and it comes out normal, you dont have nothing to fear.... Info is courtesy of a military doctor.... |

sholadoma: My problem with the process is the shortlising process.you need somebody at this stage to be frank.think of it.the numbers that applied.they cannot list more that 20 per state because only max of 5 per state will get to kaduna.hello sir, r u on bbm ? cld u send ur pin to 215de8e6...need to chat wit u. |

kingoflag: The average Nigerian ---born and raised in Nigeria--- is mentally unstable, devoid of thinking critically or seeing anything past Religion or tribe. This character is even worse if the person grew up outside of Western/Midwestern Nigeria.I agree with the first sentence only....religious and tribal sentiments are ingrained in a child especially by parents. One would expect that with so many years of education, enlightenment would follow but so many 'graduates' still display this terrible character. If only Nigeria was a country where religion or tribe was of no consequence, we would be dragging with UAE, singapore et al in terms of economic might... |
With respect to NYSC, officially it's a core requirement but I know someone who applied for DSSC during d end of NYSC and without a certificate yet and he was taken...Question is how long is your leg? |
Anyway, goodluck to all Nairalanders who applied for the short service program. Has anyone tried running 2miles or 3.2km yet? Please post your best laptime to encourage others... I'm planning to take mine on Sunday. |
emmanuel4fire:I beg to differ with respect to the following: 1. The notion that once ur name is on a main list, you cant be screened out. Do you mean if your name is shortlisted? 20 candidates are shortlisted per state and 15 from the FCT making a total of Bleep. From this, those found to have certain ailments will be dropped from medicals. so again, unless your father is Goodluck J or .... u can b screened from medicals. 2. Its 100% impossible for any genuine officer to ask you to bring woteva sum of money to fill a slot for the rank of captain let alone a general as you have so mentioned. Please beware of obvious fraud.... |
@idris just forget machination and look unto God. Success happens when preparation meets opportunity. Whether or not u are from a senator or a general, if u have a big mound of unsightly pile sticking out from your behind, no godfather can help you and if u complete d race in 30mins when others did in 12-15mins then you are also on your own. My advice is this, pray about it and then ensure that when God answers your prayer for shortlistment, you'll be medically and physically fit. |
@T Stone, Mayb 1st 2 digits represent a particular corp like ParetoAndy suggested and then d remaining digits represent hw many people have registered under dat corp for example DSSC/2013/7386 ...Finance corp is 7, and 386 people have registered ....Its all conjecture though.... |
T.stone:Nope, I applied for DSSC...The only thing that makes sense is that each corp is probably represented by a number. Maybe Medical Corp is 11...What corp did u apply for? |
@gideon360 I applied for dssc was that last week thursday or friday and my number is 11,000 and something.... |
@ T Stone, y dont you just use a PC...i used my phone to register initially and then logged in on my phone but filling the forms was just not convenient so switched to PC. If you still have problems uploading your files via PC, do let the house know... |
@ coldfaya the army website said Ecobank so why dont you visit any eco bank branch around you. Someone earlier said check union bank but a friend who works in the bank said they had not received any authorization to sell PINCODES yet so.... |
@T stone, y dont u try to be more specific as regards the problem you're experiencing. I'm sure some techie would be willing to help you out .... |
@playces there is room to upload as much as 10 different documents but 4 documents are compulsory as stipulated on the website: birth certificate, certificate of origin (from your local govt of origin), final diploma (from the university) , and nysc or so .... |
@vestolo y d beef? did u read d part wia i wrote dat 1000 other doctors could apply? I don't really know the basis for short-listment but I think it is man-o-man combined with the federal character thing.... Anyway, I am also a hopeful...I'm taking it a step at a time and not putting my mind on it cos we all know how things work in this country...fingers crossed. Btw, if you do have info that could help others applying then do share so we all benefit.... |
kk...will keep my number here for a bit..bb is also fyn. 215de8e6 , 0805 4xx xxxx for whatsapp.... |
@chimkar ....going with the british army fitness guide. Basically the program is designed to allow potential recruits attain the level of fitness expected of a trained soldier. The program runs for 16weeks and involves a lot of jogging, push ups, sit ups, running and others - building both muscular and aerobic endurance. The good part is if you are lucky enough to get shortlisted the program will prepare your body for the onslaught it will receive during dssc training. If not, its a good way to keep fit. The following is a link to the 16 week schedule... http://m.guardiannews.com/lifeandstyle/2008/jan/07/healthandwellbeing.fitness1 You also need to download a set of 6 booklets from the following link: http://www.ukgear.com/Pages/Inspiration/Health-and-Fitness/1-Official-British-Army-Fitness-Programme.html I'm moving to week 3 now with the program....hope it helps that is if you are able to follow it religiously... |
@chimkar, the BMI is important. If you're over 25 then it either because you are overweight or you are extremely well built cos the latter could erroneously raise BMI as well...but I doubt they would be interested in training overweight officers. My BMI is 26 but i'm actively working on dropping it 2-3 points just in case. Shortlisted candidates (20/state and 15 from fct) will be invited for written exam (math, english, current affairs), medicals (all the tests I had written earlier- make sure u are free from diabetes, hypertension, hiv and hepatitis B), physicals ( varying workouts but most importantly is that u must run a distance of 3.2km in under 18minutes). Only those who pass medicals get to race...cos if you are screened out its instant like big brother.. Finally those successful will face the selection board. |
Not really sure if buying a Boeing for military and paramilitary charter is a good or bad idea but what I do know is that building a top notch air defense system for the nation costs a fortune and if commercial business will help achieve the primary aim of the airforce even if partly, then it's a welcome development. Many of us want a Nigerian airforce with Chengdus replaced with F -22s & F-35 joint strike fighters as well as 3-4 units of E2-C crafts hovering the skies night and day and UAVs proving real-time frontline feedback to infantry men in Mali etc but it all costs money, more than our national budget if I may add. So if commercial is the way to go, then thumbs up to our leaders.... |
Finally...got the PIN and registered online. Guess it's time to keep fingers crossed as regards the shortlisting... |
jidegirl12: Bhuhahahaha1. Na posters like dis that should be banned for lying...how many international /ISO accreditedhealthcare companies have you worked for - that you come here to say your experience began at 2nd year unless you're a registered nurse. 2. while the young lady has done very well by setting up the company, the nwa**** poster was trying to make the following point - you can sell yourself and your company without garnishing it with lies and portraying yourself differently. Working as an administrative assistant does not count as medical experience - don't even argue if you dont have an MD after your name. Having said that, thumbs up to her anyway, wish more graduates could set up small business that are changing the way things are done in Nigeria/Africa even though its not easy out there.... |
All the ecobank branches I have been to have been experiencing network problems as per the entire PIN CODE process....will keep trying though...Am I the only one who has experienced dis? |
For those who plan on registering check the following and make sure there are no issues to avoid wasting your N2500. Urinalysis, HIVN hepatitis B, Chest X-ray, EKG, PCV, random blood sugar, height (meets recommended minimum), weight, BMI should be less than 25, foot (no flat foot), BP, pulse rate... |
Thanks for sharing as per Ecobank branches where the pin codes are available. At some other branches they keep saying network is down... This idea of exam after shortlisting is troubling...thank God I read medicine sha but for all I know, 1,000 other doctors may apply...God, as I no sabi anybody how can Son of man progress for this country? |
Things are changing by the day bro. Was asked to bring 750k to fill a slot of an officer equivalent to a General in the military. Like I said, go for information and try to know one or two high ranked officers who can push your name to the recruitment board. Once your name is on the main list, there is no way they will eliminate you during the screening. But when your name is not there, the medical officer carrying out test can fault you with false results even when you are normal. They won't tell you all this. In your eyes it will look genuine.
