Nawa o...very interesting conversations. The recession is biting most Nigerians including some of our commentators and the bone of contention is the procurement of a rolls Royce by a first class Nigerian monarch. Nigerians cannot hear progress and carry their eye. They must either claim relationship or just show bitterness like say na their money dem use buy the motor....or dem dey video you as you dey thief d money. If you are related, nice one. If you are just bitter, make money and buy the car. If you are wondering why the Oba needs to buy the car if he won't ride it, then na ofofo go kill you. Thread closed Abeg. .. |
I had a bad boss who was terribly insecure, promoted rancor among staff and wouldn't stop telling both senior and junior staff how terrible this staff or that staff was, especially when he felt threatened by the staff in question. I most definitely moved on, and I am much better for it. My productivity has improved greatly and I feel better appreciated now plus I have had a lot of opportunities I would never had smelt on the old job. |
OlajumokeBread:How did you come to this rotten conclusion? |

Wondering why we don't just adopt the US dollar? I am not an economist but would love for someone to explain why this is not a viable option. |

vareal:A lovely idea and I think it would be interesting to see how such funds are managed. There are several ways you can help. Donating to an NGO is an admirable thing but giving that 'change has yet to begin with us', you might start with supporting a child orphaned by HIV/AIDS. |
applelady:That's excellent news. I hope other people would feel free to share their experiences experiences on this forum since my experience is that most people are too shy or embarrassed to be actively involved in the community support groups. |
The good news is that viral load testing is no longer targeted (where doctor only requests it under specific circumstances and for specific patients) but routine (for every clients on ARVs) Any client who has been on ARVs for at least 6 months is eligible to have a viral load test. The viral load test measures the number of viral copies per milliliter of blood as against the CD4 test which measures the absolute number of CD4 T-lymphocytes, which is an indirect measure of a person's response to ARVs. Aside that the viral load is a direct and sensitive measure of how well the virus is getting suppressed as a result of ARVs. To simplify this, if you have used ARVS for at least 6 months and has been adherent, your viral load should be less than 1,000 copies per ml, although it's better to have much lower numbers such as under 20 copies per ml. This iis known as virologic suppression. If you have achieved virologic suppression, it's much easier for your CD4 to rise (cos there is minimal viral replication; the process of replication destroys CD4 cells). With a rising CD4, your immunity is in better shape and you have a minimal chance of developing an opportunistic infection such as tuberculosis. If you are on ARVs, ask your doctor about how you can get a viral load test as soon as possible. |
ehissi:Yes, maybe I should have quoted a reply. Anyway, my reason for why it may have been a much harder decision for the president to dispose of many of the aircraft like he suggested before he became president. Plus, the fleet doesn't just serve the president. |
Technically speaking, the fleet is registered to the Nigerian Airforce and not to the office of the president. I think someone captured my thoughts earlier by saying the article is purely speculative. Nigerian Journalists wih their contradictory stories. |

DeRay98:My brother they need to know o cos they are tomorrow's leaders and they need all this to steer the Nigerian ship from the swamp it currently is stuck in to the ocean of wealth we are dreaming of. Sadly the disparity in the quality of education provided in the developing world as compared to the developed world gets me scared about the future. |
MrALIVE:You can't just employ an extra ### ### number of people. That has already been done over the years and aside from the effect on recurrent expenditure, it creates redundancy and ultimately reduces the effectiveness of the workforce. Creating an enabling environment is a more critical role of governments than being an employer of labor because the former will lead to the latter. The problem is that past leaders have barely had to do a lot of critical thinking as against sit down with calculator to share oil wealth. When you do this for 35 years plus and forget the part about creating an enabling environment, you end up with Nigeria of 2016 where 1. You have a mono-economy dependent on crude oil revenues. When crude oil price falls, the economy is paralyzed as we have it today with many states owing salaries 2. Government is the largest employer of labor 3. A crippling redundancy in civil service where an office has oga, deputy oga, assistant oga, secretaries to oga, deputy, assistant oga, office clerks to deliver memo from upstairs to downstairs, personal assistant, correspondence keeper etc. 4. A civil service where people must get promoted after 4 years whether they have been productive or not Etc. If the civil service is restructured for efficiency and government job is all about efficiency and effectiveness like in the private sector, we would see tremendous change in the system. |
Nigeria Airways is not the only enterprise to have been embalmed, mummified and buried by corruption in the public sector. Just sad though... @OP referred to Ethiopia as a "tiny" country. Ethiopia is much larger than Nigeria, is the 2nd most populous country in Africa and it's airline is the largest and best in Africa. The Ethiopian (nationalist) spirit which is not as corrupt as that of their Nigerian brothers ensures things work. Bole International Airport is a lot cleaner than our MM Airport. Ethio telecom (govt owned) provides GSM services (not perfect but at least works). They are a lot less endowed in terms of resources and wealth but you almost weep when you compare the countries. The growth rate has exceeded that of Nigeria. Truth is Nigeria has no business being plagued by the ills of other Sub-Saharan countries but corruption has almost destroyed us. |
SuperS1Panther:Well said. A lot of work is needed to move from where we are to where we want to be. I hope the Buhari administration can infect the political class and civil servants with the needed enthusiasm. Most Nigerians see themselves first as Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa and a house divided against itself cannot stand. It's just simple fact. The change starts here on Nairaland with you and me. |
SuperS1Panther:I agree but the reason our government decided to do away with regions was that ethnic minorities were being marginalized. Creation of states also allowed for rapid development of hundreds of towns and new cities which have brought economic prosperity to locals. The problem however was that the leadership of states of the Nigerian federation were comfortable with monthly manna from Abuja with no thought about how they could boost IGR. Aside the over-reliance on oil and gas revenues, several states were poorly managed from misplaced priorities - including construction of non-viable airports to overt embezzlement of public funds. The syndrome of "na where man dey work na im dey chop" has been responsible for corruption at all levels - to the extent that it has become part of living in or doing business in Nigeria. You just can't squander resources under the delusion that your country is a rich country when in fact it's resources are not sufficient to guarantee provision of good and well-maintained roads, quality healthcare services, provision of safe water, good schools etc. Our predicament is the result of years of bad management and not because Buhari does not have a PhD in Public Policy or Macroeconomics. In any case, our problems are beyond the number of states in existence. Serious constitutional and policy reforms are needed - from how states control their resources, to stringent fiscal and policy reforms to prevent wastage at federal, state and local government levels. |

No sir. Most of the rail line is elevated as at the last time I visited Addis. |
Ejehjoe:Excellent post. I hope more Nigerians will understand that subsidy cannot continue to enrich petroleum importers and some government officials. This has been happening since the 90s and those enjoying free money would do anything to ensure it continues. NLC didn't protest when the good people in the national assembly bought jeeps at over inflated costs. They didn't protest at the fact that some state governments mismanaged fun do and are owing workers salary. Why are the labor unionists in support of corruption? Nigerians cannot continue to be misled by people with selfish interests. NLC , WE WILL NOT GO ON STRIKE WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. |
FagsamPHP:I really shouldn't have wasted my time replying your initial comment after seeing your profile pic. You're still a kid. |
FagsamPHP:So buhari is a bastard because fufu that was 20naira each is now 25 naira? The fact that you are stupid, ignorant, lack any form of home training and hide behind anonymity doesn't mean others are. The increase in price of tomatoes has absolutely nothing to do with buhari but pests destroying most of the crops and drastically reducing supply. Ode Oshi Do you see Americans come online and make unpatriotic comments about their country? @mod sorry I had to reply the idiotic-post with more curses. Youths who want to be future leaders of the country tomorrow cannot just afford to be senseless or stay uninformed about local and global events. |
It is no longer surprising to see journalists publish junk in Nigerian media. This is a clear example of twisting statistics. Of the over 300,000 Nigerians graduating from tertiary institutions in the country, what proportion of them are produced by the private institutions? If 7% of 20,000 graduates from private schools bagged a first class and 1% of 280,000 graduates from public schools bagged a first class, who produced more first class candidates? The author should have focused his attention on addressing real issues such as the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria using real indices. How employable is the Nigerian graduate? What impact do research publications from faculty and graduate students have? Why has the standard of education depreciated over the last 3 decades? |
So a young couple wedded and received a brand new car as a gift. A few months later, the vehicle develops a fault and the couple is contemplating where the car should be fixed - the seemingly expensive dealership or at baba Toyota's workshop. Which is better? Truth is that it's a matter of perspective and sometimes pocket. A dealership has all the diagnostic tools at their disposal to identify the exact fault plus they have access to technical guidance from the manufacturer if the need arises. Baba Toyota on the other hand has been fixing cars since he was in his mother's womb and is "experienced" but he has refused to move with the times. He has no diagnostic tools and relies on his intuition, trial and error sometimes to repair cars at his workshop. Who then should fix the car? Perspective and pocket determines the right choice. All those who love traditional bone setters, it's fine. Those who trust orthopedic surgeons, it's fine as well. In the end, your choice may determine whether you lose an arm or a leg or worse still, making the wrong decision for your child who can't decide for him/herself. |
With the poor quality of tertiary education in Nigeria, it's no wonder our so-called journalists cannot report news correctly. It's either that or they prefer to repackage the news to sell their papers. I think there is a huge difference between a controlled ditch and a crash. The pilot followed her training and took the right decision that saved the life of everyone on board the craft. This helicopter is designed to land on water and the pilots are trained to do so as part of the job. Nigerian journalists should stop misleading people with erroneous headlines. They should spend their time on real investigative journalism and not manipulation of news to sell their stories. |
People are suffering in this country. I recently met a lady whose husband died while she was on admission in the hospital (for a few months). The husband's family sold their car to bury him. Later on, they sold the house leaving this woman and three kids homeless. She was offered accommodation by a good Samaritan in a one room uncompleted shack. Her kids have also dropped out of school for the time being. At the moment, she survives by selling pure water at the local market. She makes about 100-120 naira daily. Having met people like this, it pains me to read that millions will be used to buy car battery and c-caution. I don't know what else defines wickedness... |
GenBuhari:He may be racist but he has raised fundamental questions. In Nigeria, 1. we cannot afford to build world-class roads but we can afford to provide public office holders with a convoy of luxury cars and a retinue of official and domestic staff, 2. We cannot afford to build world-class hospitals but it is permissible to sponsor public office holders abroad for medical checkups for ailments that can be treated in Nigeria. Some states even provide former governors with a blank check when it comes to medical treatment abroad. 3. We cannot afford to build world -class public schools and provide our youth with quality education so they can become competitive globally 4. We go around borrowing money from world Bank, China etc. saying we are a developing, broke nation but then there are billions of dollars left for a few to share and use for different purposes including spiritual purposes. 5. We spend every Friday and Sunday praying and yet, on weekdays, it's okay to be 'smart' at the office and chop a few thousands or millions unknown to the employer. So many things are fundamentally wrong with the country and it's people. Let's get tired of blaming our leaders as they are only a reflection of the society. |
Hmm, which is one of the reasons people should show restraint when it comes to making posts on social media. The doctor was expressing his/her frustration working in a situation he/she was handicapped and then cramjones comes along to sue his ass. Such is life. I am not in any way supporting either party but what does your lawsuit hope to achieve? If I remember, the house officer remains in training and is technically supposed to administer care under supervision of more experienced physicians. The fundamental question is why was he manning the accident and emergency ward all alone? Secondly, what sort of policies are in place at the particular hospital? Hospitals usually have an emergency stock of iv fluids and other items that could be deployed in an emergency to save patients. In theory, clients/relatives are supposed to pay for these items before discharge but in practice, what does the doctor do when they say they have no money? He writes it off...but then this is not sustainable so there comes a time when the emergency stock pile is exhausted and when emergency situations arise, patients and relatives must procure these items before they are available. This is the harsh reality. Another harsh reality is that if you do become involved in a car crash, the frsc and/or police whisk you to the emergency room of a government hospital and drop you off. You need iv fluids, blood transfusion, maybe a CT scan and some orthopedic procedure- who pays for all of this? What happens when relatives don't show up? What happens if they show up but can't afford it? Should the hospital choke up the bill or the government? This happens a lot more than you think, certainly daily or weekly at some hospitals... The basic issue is that the healthcare system has failed and continues to fail for many reasons. Universal health care coverage remains an illusion, the government cannot afford to build world class hospitals and staff them. It also struggles to pay the few healthcare workers it employs; the quality of education is also falling by the minute. Summary, feel free to sue but before you do, get a good grasp of the situation and redirect your energy appropriately. You probably don't have a clue as to the conditions some of these healthcare workers have to work under. |
