bumfem: @Dr..joshua2000....I am afraid, u are not getting the picture here. A non verifiable report from forumite who wants to make a point at all cost should not be relied upon. UCH is an health in situation of great repute and therefore may not dole out consultancy at anybody without due diligence for competence of such an individual.I am not sure you work in a Nigerian hospital cos if you do you won't have a problem with what the other man said after a nurse made a consultant by appointment. Besides, in large public hospitals, there are often clashes of ideologies with respect to patient management and it is the patient that unfortunately pays for it. |
Personally, I don't think I have a problem with consultant nurses, or pharmacists etc. What is critical is that a credible process is instituted in the appointment of such consultants. For doctors, they have processes in place by the West African College of Physicians/Surgeons as well as the National Postgraduate College of Medicine. Consultants irrespective of field should have requisite knowledge, and experience otherwise we would just add more problems to the already growing list. |
This is a laudable idea but my question is why can't she be taken to another hospital where the surgery can be done at a much cheaper rate? There are general hospitals that charge way less than what UCH is charging with excellent surgeons as well... |
Now people are lamenting, when doctors go on strike everybody calls them 'HEARTLESS'. This is just a tip of the iceberg, at least they even had a rechargeable lamp with fluorescent light to work with. While I'm not proud of it, I have also had a similar experience at a government hospital. Surgery started with generator power unfortunately the generator developed a fault and there was no light and I had a patient with an exposed abdomen on the table. The logical thing was to continue surgery...Intestinal Resection and Anastomosis with a Nokia torch light phone. Thankfully, the patient did quite well with no complications and was discharged home subsequently. These are the realities on ground. Doctors are clamoring not for higher salaries but for more government funding for postgraduate (residency) positions, better training, better working conditions, etc Ultimately, all this doesn't translate to a better existence for the doctor but better healthcare for the system. If you don't support their cause, you or someone you know may suffer from the collapse of the system. Unfortunately, too many Nigerians don't analyze issues to a depth they deserve but are passive thinkers and they end up with twisted views and opinions about several issues of national interest. |
Preventive maintenance is usually cheaper than repairs. I advocate changing the oil filter and engine oil after 5,000kilometres regardless of whether or not the oil has changed color and I use Total Quartz 9000. Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years and the transmission fluid changed every 40,000-50,000 kilometers. |
The simple truth is that the average nigerian is taught to cut corners and that reflects in everything we do whether it's in education, business, health care, government etc. Aside cutting corners, we are also taught how to be selfish rather than selfless and that that is why every politician, civil servants, private employer or employee works not for the glory of the country but for the glory of his pocket alone. I agree with the pilot, and with drbaby. Our problems as a nation stem from ideology ingrained in our minds as kids. If you raise a child with the notion that ibo people are bad or women from that tribe are prostitutes then all you you have succeeded in doing is transferring your small mindedness to your child and where 1,000,000 parents are teaching their kids such crap, what good can come from that generation? |
fsb: Dear Mr Siena,Please see the above. I included a link where you can download the entire text containing auto scan report for the ride but I am particular about the transmission. Would appreciate your input. |
Siena: Again, as I always advice people...get the drivetrain scanned, rather than ask for remote guesswork. That's what the OBD port's for.Dear Mr Siena, please any word on my post? |
Coco diva: @FSB, sorry about. Your dilemma. I had same issues with my '05 jetta and I have been able to resolve it. The signs were just same as you described yours,I changed transmission oil and the issue resolved for a while though longer than you said yours did.though it took a while before I felt the difference but afterwards I enjoyed it for some weeks before it went back to the jerking.Thanks...will do that |
Dear Mr Siena, Good morning, I have issues with transmission slippage on my vw jetta. See details below: 01) Make. Vw 02) Model. Jetta 03) Engine size. 1.6L 04) Transmission type. Automatic 05) Model year. 2006 06) Spec (Euro or US). US 07) Drive configuration. not sure of what this means yet My car has the following issues: 1 . All gears are selected in the instrument panel (I guess that means it is in limp mode. Why it is in limp mode is what I don't understand) 2. Other signs: vehicle occasionally jerks quite violently when the reverse gear especially is selected from 'P' position. The drive is also jerky also occasionally especially during gear change. Most times, the car will change gears seamlessly but with deceleration to a complete stop, accelerating is unusually prolonged. Seems the engine power for some reason isn't been transmitted to the wheels. There is also the occasional high engine revs (loss of gear). While one auto mechanic recommended a change of gear oil, another recommended changing the gear box altogether. So a little confused about the way forward... I bought a VAG cable and scanned all systems myself. Got the following results for the transmission After scanning the transmission, I had the following error codes: 17118 - Gear 4 P0734 - 003 -Incorrect Ratio - Intermittent 01192 - Torque Converter Lock-up Clutch 003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent what do you advise? The link below links to a document with entire scan results for the car. https://www.nairaland.com/download/1315080 Awaiting your response |
I have attached a file with a summary of the Auto Scan I did myself this evening. I look forward to getting any assistance with any of the codes. |
UPDATE: I decided to purchase a VAG cable and run the scan myself after reading the manual. After scanning the transmission, I had the following error codes: 17118 - Gear 4 P0734 - 003 -Incorrect Ratio - Intermittent 01192 - Torque Converter Lock-up Clutch 003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent |

elviszzz: Have the transmission scanned and post error codes here,it will go a long way to fixing your car and personally I don't think your gearbox is bad. Many thanks Sir, I will do that and post online for further assistance. |
ZIM DRILL: take it to people who do proper diagnostics, why did they clear the code and not tell you the code number ? the code has all answers to your problemCan you please give me the address of any place in Lagos where I can get the transmission diagnosed and get an exact code? In the meantime, some transmission mechanic says getting replacement parts for that model is a little difficult and buying a fairly used gearbox is easier.... |
By the way, what's a gearbox assy? |
Dear Siena, I recently acquired a VW Jetta 2006 model that developed transmission issues. I will attempt to list these issues: 1 . All gears are selected in the instrument panel (I guess that means it is in limp mode. Why it is in limp mode is what I don't understand) 2. Other signs: vehicle occasionally jerks quite violently when the reverse gear especially is selected from 'P' position. The ride is also jerky also occasionally. Most times, the car will change gears seamlessly but with deceleration to a complete stop, accelerating is unusually prolonged. Seems the engine power for some reason isn't been transmitted to the wheels. There is also the occasional high engine revs (loss of gear). This all began on a trip to Abuja. I had the car taken to mandilas where the car was scanned and a change of gear oil and gear oil filter was recommended but the solution seemed too simple for the complicated problem. The error was cleared (and while driving, only 'D' was selected but about 30 minutes later, all gears were selected while in traffic and problem has persisted. Currently in Lagos and had the car taken to VW dealership and they recommended changing the transmission and the cost of a new gearbox is about the cost of a new Kia Rio. So there lies my dilemma. Recently however, there is a rattling noise, not very loud that is audible when the gear is changed to 'D'. That occurred the morning the car was being driven to the dealership. In any case, what do you advise? 1. Get a mechanic to fix the gear box? 2. Buy a tokunbo gear box Would love to hear from you. Would also appreciate the contact of a transmission specialist in Lagos from members of the house. |
1. The publication is an embarrassment to the country 2. What is more annoying is that some journalist (who actually went through school actually sat down to record the whole encounter), and the editor of a major newspaper thought the material was publishable content. 3. The material should be taken off the internet ASAP My opinion though... |
Elenababy: I just found out about my HIV status few weeks ago...life has been hell ever since then, I tried committing suicide but thank God am still here today. There are many centre's offering treatment, care and support in Ondo state. Try any of the general hospitals: Akure, Ondo, Igbara-Oke. |
Elenababy: Just found out about my HIV status few weeks ago, since then life has been hell, I hardly eat or sleep...I even tried committing sucide but somehow am still alive, I need help and someone to talk toDear Elena, It would be a lie to tell you that I know how you feel but having worked with people living with hiv/aids, the first and most important hurdle was getting yourself tested. In the last 20 or so years, more drugs have been developed to fight HIV/AIDS than malaria for example so the days people died from the disease are coming to an end. Having said that, in Nigeria people die in my opinion from either mismanagement, lack of adherence with medications or late diagnosis and treatment. I advise patients that the world has moved from the days when you rely solely on information provided by your doctor. For one, you must take charge of your situation by getting and staying informed. Read all you can about the disease and ask your doctor all possible questions, after all that is why he is a doctor. Secondly, keep reading. When ever you notice a new symptom, don't come and post on nairaland (most people here may not be able to help you), get to the hospital as soon as you can not minding any appointment dates and also make the internet your best friend, stay current by reading voraciously. There are great sites like WebMD with articles written in a user friendly format. Finally, follow the advice of your doctor religiously. Take your meds religiously, and don't underestimate the power of a support group. A few sites have support groups that meet regularly. Don't hesitate to let us know how you're doing.... |
1. Do some research, there are a lot of research papers studying the choral effect on stuttering. 2. A while back, a company produced devices that seem to significantly reduce stuttering based on the principle of the choral effect. The device is called Speech Easy. Not sure you can get it in Nigeria though but I may be wrong. http://www.speecheasy.com/models.php |
Nigerians including nairalanders need to be aware of pulmonary embolism. The classic history is chest pain, shortness of breath, and death (which may be sudden or not, depending on the size of clot one throws up) in someone who recently came back from a long distance trip. Long road trips, and long flights should be avoided as much as possible. Guys, be aware....unfortunately diagnosing this condition in Nigeria relies on a high index of suspicion as the imaging studies to be done, to my knowledge are not available in Nigeria, although I may be wrong. |
Reminds me of what someone said, 'A thief is a thief not because his father died and couldn't send him to school, or because there is a high rate of unemployment, but because he has greed, covetousness, envy, jealousy, perhaps no humanistic values ingrained in his character so also is the wife beater', for example. |
