ziga:smh! the point of using d illustration was just to point 2d fact dat d suffering is evrywhere. i'm based primarily in lagos but i've been in the north since 2009, |
To Mexdez and a few of the other NLanders who had serious comments to post, thank you for your presence on NL and I pray that we have more people like you in this country. I won't like to mention names but it is so clear that some comments were either posted by complete bastards, illiterates, jokers or a mix of any of the 3. It is quite unfortunate that d world had to watch the video but what was depicted is just the reality that 'govt-ass licking' media in Nigeria and a lot of folks would pretend does not exist. People are suffering in this country and a lot of people are oblivious to the fact, the day a sizeable number of Nigerians wake up to the obvious, perhaps a revolution would begin. I'm a doctor working, at least for now, in the North and I have a small clue as to the level of suffering being experienced by many in this country. A few examples perhaps: 1. I was in the market last week and there was dis lady selling 'road-side' food that a lot of people buy. Nway, as I was walking past, a customer had mistakenly spilled his entire plate of indomie on the floor and was expressing displeasure when a couple of almajiris ran to start eating dis indomie without minding that the noodles fell on d sand. Now, d entire environment is one I wld neva be found eating not to even imagine being in d position of those kids, now, d almajiris is a complex issue bt I just wanna illustrate d level of suffering some of dis kids go through. Many almajiris find it tougher than the kids featured in the al-jazeera video cos in dia case, they are completely left to fend for themselves, 2. Or shld I go ahead with tales of wot goes on in MMSH, a supposedly cheap general hosp run by kano state govt? Because a lot of services are free, everyone goes dia bt wot goes on there can make some people break down, - women in labor who are eclamptic are convulsing on the floor cos of no beds - people die because surgery was postponed because d generator was bad. If they're lucky, the surgery is started with generator and completed with touch lite fone (I've had only 1 such experience. Thank God d kid did very well after dat) - people r brought in with shock bt can't affford normal saline so ur helpless - several children die each week from typhoid perforatn cos dia parents either keep dem at home thinking d dsx is diabolical in origin, or bring dem to d hosp expecting free care. In my own hosp, we smetimes waive surgery fee for such pxts but wot abt drugs and IV fluids- the parents many times can't afford so d kids die There are just too many instances to mention, a lot of people are suffering. We really need to come to terms with our many problems and stop leaving in the clouds, Abeg, I don tire to dey write, Our leaders are too wicked and the corruption has eaten so deep into our hearts that being corrupt is fashionable. Please people, wake up to the reality, |
HEllo, I really could use some help with this one. I use a blackberry 9700 and subscribe to Glomobiles' BIS package. Unfortunately, I can't seem to be able to watch youtube videos on my blackberry either via the web browser or the native youtube app that comes with the OS 6.O Whenever I attempt to do this, I get the following message, "an error has occured attempting to play media". I really don't knw what could be responsible. Youtube streaming has never worked for me even while using OS5 that is, prior to OS6 upgrade. Googled the web for possible solutions. Info from the blackberry website suggested inputing 'correct apn settings'. I once put in 'apn: glo secure; user: flat, pw: flat) when I installed 2go on my blackberry. While 2go started working, Glo started deducting airtime for browsing even while my BIS was active. Nway, right now I'm skeptical about using any apn settings so as to avoid my 2go experience. That leaves me clueless as to what next I could do to get my blackberry streaming, Would really appreciate help with this. Thanks a lot people, |
Do policemen assigned to banks get paid by the banks or by the police force? |
Hey, Thanks. I finally got it receiving messages. Had to log into my BIS account on the glo website and edit the setting. Don't know why that worked on my PC but not when done via my phone. Thanks a lot for your help though. |
Thanks a lot for trying to help me out wit this. Okay, when I click settings (under email I guesss), I see the ff links: Change passowrd Language View eula Email accounts Help Close I click on email accounts and it opens a page listing all configured email addresses on my device (4 of them), with the option to edit or delete each address. I click on edit link under work email and see d following links: Email acct name Reply to Your name Username Password Signature Auto bcc to Advanced settings. I click on advanced settings. What I see is imap.brandexclaim.com. Use SSL check box is ticked and port number is there as well. However, d only parameters I can edit is the email server and whether or not to use ssl. What do u suggest as the way forward. |
Hi, I have all the settings. My problem is how to where to insert them. Unlike with micrsoft outlook, when configuring email address on the Blackberry, you don't get the choice to insert mail server settings manually. Hope u understand? |
I really hope some blackberry administrator can help me out here. I'm having problem configuring my work email on my BB 9700. I have no problems with Gmail and Yahoo. My problem is dat I added my work email (Bleep@brandexclaim.com) and it automatically configured the address. Unfortunately, I can only seem to send emails but don't receive any emails. The reply-to address isn't the problem. I think it issue is that I cant insert the incoming mail server settings and port no, etc. Is there a way to resolve this issue? I went to the Glo customer center in kano and the guy told me to either get it done by our corporate techie (which we don't hav cos we are a small start-up) or drop it with them but the latter would take weeks to resolve. I really hope smeone out there has a way around this. Thanks |
@coded 777: what has goodluck jonathan got to do with a cardiac catheterization beting done at a PRIVATE hospital? My center (a public institution) has an angiography machine but there is no interventional cardiologist to use it and to my knowledge, none of the cardio guys have been sent for a fellowship. So basically, its gathering dust. @EvilBrain: I completely agree with you. All these journalists of nowadays sef, or is it marketing hype? Unfortunately, more than 60% of nigerians cannot afford to go to Reddington. @buzugee: Which technician in agege does cardiac catheterization that you know of? All these people who think they can come online and write whatever they like sef, all these doctor wannabes. Learn and stop whinning! To my knowledge, a cardiac catheter insertion for CVP or PCWP monitoring isn't surgery but repair of a persistent PDA is surgery. Its like endoscopy. Not all endoscopic procedures are surgeries. Flexible laryngoscopy is not surgery but ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is surgery. |
Naija, lol. @reindeer : I thought that was what indomethacin was for! Closure of PDAs, Anyway, I think we should celebrate when we can have this replicated in public hospitals that the average nigerian can afford. We still have a very long way. Until recently, I never knew bronchoscopy was not commonly done in Naija except for a few centers like mine. So God help d child who aspirates a screw or an earring, |
binhozie:Alright, so according to your post, your blood glucose was 110mg/dl and that was 1hr after eating, Ok, so I'm going to explain a few things, When it comes to testing the blood for glucose, there are several tests I as a physician can order but the most common are: 1. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) aka. Fasting Blood Glucose, Fasting Plasma Glucose - This test measures how much glucose is in your blood after an overnight fast. But generally, the overnight fast lasts between 8 and 12hrs. An 8hr overnight fast would mean that you eat nothing between 10pm and 6am, for example. At the end of this period, blood is drawn and its glucose content is analyzed. 2. 2hr post-prandial glucose test - This test follows the FBS. After blood is drawn for FBS, you are allowed to eat. Your blood sample is then drawn 2hrs after food intake. 3. Random Blood Sugar (RBS) - A random blood sugar like the name implies is RANDOM. This test has no regard to time or whether or not you ate 30mins, 2hrs or 5hrs ago. In your case, the test you had done was actually a random blood glucose test. Normal blood glucose range: 70-110mg/dl The American Diabetes Association's criteria for diagnosing diabetes mellitus include: Any combination of the ff. findings or confirmation of any of the individual findings by repetition on a subsequent day: i) Symptoms of diabetes + RBS greater than 200mg/dl ii) Fasting Blood glucose greater than 126mg/dl after a minimum of an 8hr fast iii) 2hr post-prandial glucose greater than 200mg/dl Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) If your FBS is between 110 and 125mg/dl, then you're said to have impaired fasting glucose and if your RBS or 2hr post prandial glucose is greater than 140mg/dl but less than 200mg/dl, you're said to have impaired glucose tolerance. What's the importance of IFG and IGT? IFG or IGT, if left untreated is high risk to develop into type 2 diabetes within 10years. Hope this is helpful even though, I had to do this in a hurry, |
akanke79:SERIOUSLY What's the basis of that?DOMINIQUE!!! I hope people know that the health section is a serious section. This isn't the place where people think they can come and write whatever it is that comes up to their heads, particularly sarcasm, |
dominique:Skin scraping + KOH prep would be d initial assessment if one suspected a fungal infection. It's just that it's not done in naija, |
@ Poster Well you've said it all, I mean, you had your pharmacist (?chemist) diagnose and treat you. I'm surprised you expected positive results, It's best you visit a physician to do a physical assessment, make a diagnosis and start you on the necessary treatment, It's next to impossible doing that on the NET with limited info, Get well soon |
It's like there's this word filter on NL, What I wrote wasn't womanly secretions but vag@#al secretions; bosom should have been bre@st, Moderator dominique, can we do something about excluding the health threads 4rm filtering thing? Thanks, |
Ur welcome, |
@Romeo4real NOTED, |
Interesting thread, Basically, the virus can be picked up from any infected biological fluid including vaginal secretions, semen and breast milk although the risk with breast milk is much less than with the former 2 fluids. That is why you discourage HIV infected women from breast feeding, However, a non-nursing woman will not produce breast milk unless there is some hormonal pathology. Ceteris paribus, the risk of contracting the virus from sucking on the breast is ALMOST none. Also note that there have been no documented cases of the virus been contracted from tears or saliva however, kissing can be dangerous if the infected person has open sores or bleeding gums, |
buzugee:OH MY GOD!!! Where did you get your medical license from? Ukraine? What you have just described is utter nonsense. This is the kind of thing that makes me angry throughout the entire day, AV nodal block. How can you make such a diagnosis from a succinct history and without an ECG? How does eating vegetables help someone with an AV block? What does 'BORDERLINE' coronary artery dsx even mean? buzugee:I don't agree with you that a hypertensive pxt should avoid potassium-rich foods like bananas like you say. It's so clear you have never read Harrison's principles of internal medicine. Just in case you didn't know, there is a positive relationship between potassium intake and sodium excretion by the kidneys. Every cardiologist knows that. Nairaland, gosh |
@Poster Was it a D&C or a D&E? And I'm wondering who does a D&E for a pregnancy above 12wks gestation, anyway, I'm assuming a TOP was not attempted. Ideally, in the event of a miscarriage, a D&E (suction curettage) is done and slight bleeding persists for about 5-7days after the procedure. If the bleeding has lasted more than a week, you should go and see a doctor as soon as you can, |
I think plastic surgery procedures aren't VERY POPULAR in Naija due to their high costs. For example, a pair of bosom implants costs anywhere between $2000 and $2500 and that does not include the cost of the procedure. In the end, you're looking at spending anywhere between $5000 and $8000 for standard bosom augmentation and a little more for the transumbilical approach. Naija women love good things and that includes plastic surgery. In my opinion, with time, lower costs will create a good market for procedures such as labioplasty, vaginoplasty, G spot amplification, brazilian butt augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction. |
Ibime, We're on the same frequency on dis one! Can u imagine the pedophilic Arrow saying he's not bound by the laws of this country? Do these people even go to school at all or do they think that Nigerian's are silly, how can a Senator in his right mind make such a statement? Were u sworn in as a Senator to upload Islam or to upload the Constitution of Nigeria? Bloody Mother-fucker! I just get so angry when I hear this gist, I pity myself and millions of Nigerians out there who are under the rule of people who believe they are somehow not subject to the same laws they have been sworn in to upload and protect. How can we progress as a nation? We are finished!!! The annoying part is that about 2 weeks ago on a domestic flight, one silly dude was supporting Yerima saying he would give out his own 13-year old daughter to any one of us who approached him, provided the person was muslim. Such Bollocks!!! |
@queentayo I bumped into the hematologist a few hours ago and raised the issue. Basically, it bores down to 2 things: The first is error with methodology and the second is poor experience reading the test strip. Unfortunately, I can't explain more than that but hope that helps. Basically, one laboratory did the right thing while the other messed up. It would make a lot of sense to repeat the test at a third laboratory. |
@Queentayo I've posted the link to an excellent clinical resource on sicklecell disease, http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/778971-overview As regards your question on different results from different labs, I sincerely cannot answer that question. Hematology isn't my AOS but I'll definitely talk to a colleague and get back to you. Enjoy! |
Could someone please explain the role of the National Security Adviser and why his Office gets N65 billion for 2010? I'm presuming that NIA and SSS are under the Dept of Defence. How large could the office possibly be? And then the Ministry of Health gets just N67bn, |
This is a question to every nairalander: Why has the FG not decided to do with the power sector what they did with the telecommunications sector? We have successfully been able to leap from the years of 'phone is NOT for poor people' to where we are today. Isn't it worth it to make this sort of move with the power sector? Why can't Yar Adua and his team of 'experts' consider this move instead of going infinitely around the corrupt-ridden NEPA/PHCN. Constant power is so important and WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE ECONOMICALLY IF AS A COUNTRY, NIGERIA CANNOT PROVIDE 24/7 POWER. |

Thanks. I hope the point have raised would be taken into consideration and the health section improved. @Seun Am sure mukina2 has done a fine job on action points and dani1luv has done the same as well. 1. No advertisements in the health section of nairaland. Advertisement of fake rubbish health products = clutter = irritates a lot of people = waste of web disk space. With less clutter, doctors here on nairaland will have less threads to go through and provide information to readers. 2. Even if these guys want to advertise, those advertisements should be moved to say, nairalist ( I don't know if that's possible) 3. Get an excellent moderator who can a short time daily or every 2 days just to make sure that things move smoothly. Many Thanks, fsb |
What's the basis of that?
