Analyzing the 16million naira expense: Weekly workup: including routine blood and chemistry analysis at the rate of 1,800 for a full blood count and 3,500 for chemistry. I dont knw hw often he undergoes dialysis but a work-up is done pre and post-dialysis in an ideal world. If he does dis 3 times per week then it comes down to 31,800 weekly excluding cost of 3 sessions of dialysis weekly. He could easily spend between 40 and 60 thousand on dialysis weekly incl consultation fees at the hospital. Sub-total for 2months (while looking for potential donor): 480,000 Next step is finding a suitable donor: This is done through 2 lab tests. First is a blood group (donor and recipient must have same blood type) and then must also be HLA compatibility. HLA testing in nigeria is about 360,000 (approx) for a donor and recipient. Every additional donor will cost another 160,000-180,000 until you find a suitable donor. It is not uncommon to have to screen as many as 5 or 10 people if one is unlucky to eventually get a potential donor that is not just HLA compatible but also free from HIV, Hepatitis B,C, Diabetes etc. HLA typing for 6 potential donors would cost about 1m and that's if you are lucky. Running HLA Tests also include ancillary expenses...lets say 1.5mil for 6 people incl and infective screening. If he has received several blood transfusions which is likely due to renal failure he would also need to do an expensive HLA antibody screen and would make finding a donor much harder to find. Cost of test not included but it used to be arnd 110,000. Sub-total: 1.7m Travel cost to India: I never go india before so I dont know but lets say 160,000 per person just for airfare per person. He would need cost of airfare for himself, the potential donor, hotel expenses for that donor at least before d day of surgery plus cost of hiring a doctor to escort him to india which generally is not less than 500,000naira. So lets allocate another 1.2mil. Surgery itself: No idea jor...Maybe 5mil including cost of surgery and stay at hospital, tests and drugs. Post surgery: He may want to stay back after surgery for 1month which is advisable so he can continue follow up by his indian doctors. Extra hotel and miscellaneous expenses 600,000. Back to nigeria: So he is back. If all is well he would need a minimum of monthly chemistry @3,500, measurement of tacrolimus levels monthly (this is d drug that is given to suppress your immune system from attacking the foreign kidney). This test is best done continously after surgery to prevent complications minus cost of drugs and consultations at local hospital. This would probably cost somewhere around 60-70,000 monthly. sub-total (1st yr post surgery): 2.8mil Total: Approx. 12mil (Verdict: 16million is not far fetched)... Over 43,000 people who were promptly paid for years and yet Nigerians can't boast of constant electricity. Same thing with NITEL....Anyway, lesson well learned. The difference between the British NHS and NEPA or NITEL or any other government service is that in the latter, the concept of meritocracy doesn't exist. |
Assuming the DSS know what they are doing then they must have a good argument on why demolition is an option as opposed to confiscation of the property. Fact is Nigerians would probably never know in details, what was discovered in the supermarket and like always, it's always easier to lie to the public to give them that false sense of security that they need... |
Remembering how a LCDA administrator invited a state governor to commission 1 transformer to mark the governor's 100th day in office...and the governor of-course showed up feeling all majestic like the project was anything to write home about. Decades of leadership by thieving politicians plus widespread poverty are the reasons for the widespread sycophancy and celebration of under-achievement in Nigeria. |
After reading a couple of posts, I can only shake my head at the number of non-intelligent responses especially those trying to make a mole hill out of nothing. Little wonder politicians have successfully been able to manipulate public opinion in THEIR favor. How many people have analyzed all this carefully but alas, it's easier to reply in anonymity rather than spend time thinking through. From a moral standpoint, how many of those who commented have not at some point in their lives been engaged in infidelity? Why set yourself judge over another man when some are worse off? Besides the man's religion permits him to marry as many as four. Is Dr Yaro a fourteen year old woman? The last time a politician was indicted on account of marriage to a juvenile according to our constitution, the man's enemies were able to set the masses against him but today, that same politician is where he is and for most your lives have not gotten any better since then. Secondly, yes a classified employment document was released (by some disgruntled employees in HR) but what is strange about anything on the document. Anyone who has previously worked in any federal government parastatal won't see anything strange. The head of the body must recommend each candidate for employment or else you get no letter. But let's just say I am wrong about this also....Did anyone read the letters at all? There is 'Dr' before 'Yaro' plus even the minister of state in his recommendation notes that she is an expert in rural agriculture...So is she qualifies for the job or not? Let us be honest with our miserable selves for once. How many of us don't know that even in the private sector getting a job can sometimes be about who you know unless of course you were one of the few. Finally, some mischievous elements post supposed messages between the governor and the doctor and we all shout 'Off with his head....?" Are you an Ifa or Amadioha priest to know who the fool or who is being fooled? Please people, give the man some credit. We are so easily swayed by our short-sightedness that we have and will most probably continue to fail to see the big pictures. Let us not be deceived by the the squabbles between those in political office when we have real problems that the Jonathan administration is yet to solve. Whether we have the requisite knowledge or not to accept or deny, Sanusi has done fantastically well in managing the CBN but more importantly the stability of the naira which has an effect on the prices of bread and oranges FYA just in case you don't know what it all means. We have serious problems.... 1. Insecurity 2. Rising unemployment rate 3. Poorly developed infrastructures eg. Electricity 4. Poverty 5. Moribund death camps called general hospitals etc. How does this Sanusi business after the price of pure water or give unemployed graduates job etc. While I probably will be abused by some folk who will read this and feel insulted nevertheless, let us focus on challenging our government to serving us and delivering on their promises rather than continue witch-hunting those they feel threatened by. |

Having mixed feelings regarding this tecno smartphones. On one hand, tecno should be applauded - being able to bring into the Nigerian market, mid to low-end android devices and raising the question whether or not Nigerians are being ripped off by the duo of producers and Nigerian marketers of global brands - Nokia, RIM, Samsung etc. On the other hand, global brands like Apple, Nokia etc are time-tested brands that value quality product delivery. Thousands of man hours go into R&D, and many of these companies have adopted Six Sigma principles in manufacturing and therefore reducing product failure to almost negligible. Users of high end devices eg. Nokia N8 or Lumia love the picture quality that only a Carl Zeiss lens would provide and are willing to pay top dollar to have a work of art in their hands. There is therefore no basis for comparing a work of sheer ingenuity and art to a cheap imitation like the tecno that is cheap in pricing and durability. Only time will tell if tecno is out to rip us off or are building a global brand that will change the industry but until then I'll always have mixed feelings... |
AjanleKoko: IESE was the partner school to LBS in the early days, before they got their license from the government.Hope when you come across my LBS degree you'll just keep nodding your head .... |
AjanleKoko: So it is. Surprising.Where did you have your MBA? |
@Poster Who is to judge whether it is right or wrong? Marriage between 1st degree cousins is ACCEPTABLE amongst some cultures in Nigeria eg. Hausa for example but I'm sure there are others both within and outside the country. |
AjanleKoko: IESE is not a Tier 1 school. You probably mean IE Business school, Madrid. Please check the 2013 Financial Times Rankings. IESE Global MBA program is ranked No. 7 worldwide and its EMBA is ranked No. 2 worldwide. |
AjanleKoko: London Business School is not the average UK MBA. It's categorized with schools like Wharton, Columbia, Harvard, INSEAD, etc.You are right as regards Brunel MBA being under 5million but why would I bother applying to schools in that category? Are they better than LBS? My OPINION is that LBS offers the requisite knowledge in a local context. I want to learn about doing business in the Nigerian economy. If I had the finances to travel out, I would go for a school with "clout" INSEAD, IESE, ESADE, Harvard etc where a Fortune 500 would grab me before my program was completed. In the end, I don't see how a Brunel MBA beats LBS MBA....so its LBS all the way |
bait: LBS applicants.....pls prepare well for your essays, study GMAT...we need 2 blow their minds with our writing skills. Wish u all the best.thanks bro... |
Nawa o...God will help us in this country. After all the movies, my only thoughts are that a house to house search should be done but knowing how houses are built in the north it is easier said than done.... |
AjanleKoko: LBS these days charges over N5m for their Executive MBA programWell that's for the EMBA. The full-time MBA is just over N3m. It's definitely cheaper than thinking of INSEAD which will set up back about N12 - 16m for example. Anyway, sha...expense is all relative. Some silver spooned fellow will read this post and wonder what the fuss is all about... |
AjanleKoko: @OP,LBS might be the most expensive in Nigeria but it is no where as expensive as an MBA from a top school in the UK or US... |
bait: Yea, I got an invite to write d test on june 1st....pls did any one get as well....let's rub minds 2gedasup bro, got an invite as well...i am guessing d exam will be the Gmat without the integrated reasoning section. Just essay writing, quantitative and verbal reasoning...don't know hw many questions per section or how many sections will be on the exam... |
chrmn1: Hi peeps, pls I urgently need informed advice regarding the following: I want to do an MBA program and Lagos business School readily comes to mind but is much costlier than doing mba programs in schools like ife or lag, etc. I want to know if that extra chunk of money I would pay at LBS would be worthwhile or if it'd be wise to just do mba programs of likes of schools I listed aboveDid you get an invitation to write the entrance exams? Funny that no one has dropped info abt the exams yet or no NLder dey LBS? |
Push ups are part of physical training routines...the idea of what i posted is for one to build one's stamina. The training involves a lot of physical training...little wonder every friend you have who is in training loses serious weight. |
Raphtop: lol this push up sth dey scare me o. The last time somebody did fifty in my presence was in one cowbell sth sth lyk dat, and everybody was lyk wao!!! Now u r saying the fifty doesn't even make EXCELLENT? I dey fear fear o. D last tym i even try am self, na only 15 i fit do.Bro this your post is funny....lmao! If ur max is 15, then slowly build on that. Try doing 1 x press up max every other day and then step it up the following week with 2 x press up max and then 3 x press up max etc |
y men dey fear to do push-ups? Army fitness is both about muscular and aerobic endurance.... You guys can try out the 2-minute fitness test: a. Maximum number of push-ups you can do in a 2-minute period b. Maximum number of sit-ups you can do in a 2-minute period For push-ups, (first figure is for males under 30, 2nd figure is for females under 30) excellent: 72+, 46+ very good: 53-71, 30-45 good: 44-52, 21-29 average: 34-43, 14-20 poor: 0-33, 0-13 For sit-ups, under 30yrs excellent- 77+ very good: 59-76 good: 50-58 average: 40-49 poor: 0-39 |
emmanuel4fire: fsb like how many push up are we going to do and how do they do their counting. Is it 3 to 1 or counted directly from 1 to 50.no idea bro.... |
Raphtop: Please house, my question is on the 3.2km race. Is it for the TO and FRO or there's gona be another 3.2km while coming back? To make 6.4km by my calculation. It's a 1-way trip....bro |
While waiting for the shortlist, has any one tried running 2miles in under 18minutes? Pls post your lap time here to encourage others plus any words of advice....regarding the race |
SailorXY: The military has the same salary structure bro, except allowances which is higher for medical personnelsi agree with you. It's called Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Scale CONAFSS.... |
most of the other threads are .... anyway, folks keep posting your questions. Not everyone would get shortlisted but the worst thing that can happen to you is to get sent home because you were too laid back to check your blood pressure or blood sugar. |
emmanuel4fire: Pals I apologise. Am sorry the way I acted.no p.... |
emmanuel4fire: Quacks.complete dumb f&@k...sabi sabi. If you don't know basic pathophysiology only God can help you. In the mean time, go and pass MRCP and USMLE before you are ready to talk medicine with me. If you don't get shortlisted na that time your eye go clear... |
sanilistic: doctors in the house i have this sudden high blood pressure reading of 140/100 and at times it goes up 2 like 150/110 consistently and i do joggins 3 days a week, but i still cant find any significant drop. the only way it goes down to like 120/80 is when i take a bp drug. my question to the doctors is that can somebody be screened out 4 having such a high blood pressure or can taking blood pressure medication be detected in the urine and blood test cos am scared of not having issues1. how often do you measure your bp and with what? an old mercury sphygmomanometer or d digital devices out there? The former is more accurate especially since variables like battery voltage can affect the accuracy of the latter. 2. exercise (non-strenous) and weight loss are good ways to lower blood pressure. Actually have same problem but without drugs, its now in the range of 120/x... 3. not a good idea to go wit a bp of 140/x or 150/x to camp cos once that is detected, bye bye 4. as for drugs being detected in the urine, yes you can detect them but i really doubt the army screening is that high falluting. even if they were gonna do a urine tox screen which is unlikely, it would be for drugs of abuse and not hypertensive drugs in the urine. |
emmanuel4fire: Hahaha.... Which university did you attend? So you don't know that besides athletes and body builders truck pushers and wheel barrow boys also do aerobics on daily bases when they treck long distance with heavy loads. I wonder who taught you in school. The only thing you could do was to go to wikipedia and copy and paste what you saw there.dude, at this point of your life it is expected that you should have gained more wisdom to know when to speak and when to shut up...na sabi sabi be your problem. I have more than an MBBS for your info young man. |
omo, as medics lets pipe down on the medical jargons and see how we can help NL folks pass their medicals. So guys, pls post any questions you have here ...but should relate to NA medical screening.... |
joker5180: i thought by definition 'cardiomyopathy' is heart muscle disease of unknown aetiology characterised by...............?HCM is the most common cause of sudden death in the sports demographic...if you hear that a footballer died while on the field, its most likely due to HCM. they develop hypertrophy of the left ventricle but also of the interventricular septum. they have mild to moderate outflow obstruction on the left side as well as decreased left ventricular compliance. Usually death occurs from V tach or V fib. The risk of death is relate to the degree of thickness of the LV. there is also a genetic component so maybe that's why not all footballers die from it. |

SO I SHOULDN'T SPEAK WHEN A MEDIC IS BREAKING GROUNDS WITH ERROR. Your degree level doesn't matter to me. Your knowledge is what matter, because if you have a degree more than MBBS and yet can write rubbish here, I wönder how you would treat your patients. God help the military, God help Nigeria.
