Wizs2019: That's the problem my brother. I can't so the care/nutrients available to the plants is significantly reduced. Excess water in the soil reduces the oxygen in the soil so the roots of the plants start to rot which in turn kills the plants. Bottom line, too much water is no good. Which is why I am praising God for what I was able to achieve. Don't you think mulching would have helped? The small area opened for plant to grow would have been covered by the leaf canopy, like 3 weeks after planting. So, even with excess rainfall, the moisture of the soil would still be reasonable enough to allow for fertigation, unless you dey take style dey enjoy the reduction in the cost of production, due to free irrigation from rainfall . Mulching would also help to keep weeds due to excess rain, at bay. Please correct my assumptions wherever I'm wrong because I'm open to learning. Oga wiz and okoroemeka, please enlighten us more on drip, especially the cost, installation and where to get it. We can use a plot of land as a case study. God bless you. |

Wizs2019: My people! Been awhile. So a brief update on the current cucumber season, thus far we have 260 bags from the approximately 3 plots. I give glory to God. We are hopeful of another 40 bags. We have been harvesting for over 4 weeks so the plants are starting to wilt. But omo mehn this is the most difficult planting season ever! Constant rain for weeks, really heavy downpour. It is a miracle the plants survived for this long. People associate rain with DM but I didn't have problem with DM as it only started appearing in the last week or so. The main issues were lack of bees and insects for pollination, reduced uptake of nutrients, reduced care of plants (workers cannot work in rain) and over saturation of water in soil. All issues are due to heavy sustained downpour. Then with the heavy rain comes bad road so even transporting harvest to market was a problem as well. However, one thing that was beneficial from the rain was that everyone else was also having the same issues so any goods taking to the market was sold at premium price.
The initial target of 500 bags is no longer possible, we still made more than 100% ROI so I am not complaining. God is good!
Bros Emeka, I would recommend using some fertiliser with the manure you have sourced. It will give the plants a huge boost. I am able to harvest over a 100 bags from CU999 on a plot so there is no reason why you can't also. Look at my post from a few months ago for example fertilisers you can use, amount to use and when to use. Also since our oga seems to want to become more reasonable, what was suggested is aligned with the information I provided and if he doesn't agree, he is free to comment without insults please.
Happy Sunday! Oga Wiz, do you still fertigate despite the heavy rainfall? Won't the water be too much for the plants? |

FarmTech: . Yes, from the recommendation i see in Cu 999 pack. Closer spacing is also possible but avoid it during the rainy season because of disease issues. I also think that closer spacing is not good if there is heavy pest infestation, esp pests like whiteflies which are very difficult to control. Okoroemeka, what's your take on this? Cukes should be spaced 60cm apart? |

OluchiDelly: I guess you feel 60 is too much. Everyone with his own choice. I dont think 60cm is too bad especially if 2 seeds per hole is used. Some use 30, 45, 50, 60cm. 60cm apart minimize over crowding which can promote disease outbreak especially this raining period. Instead of 60cm for 2 seeds per hole, wouldn't 30cm for a seed per hole better? |

okoroemeka: it's left for a good farmer to research his market very well before committing funds,I remember when we planted Murano and it was a disaster,no customer wants it,we have to take it to enugu to be sold, there's a limit to the info you will get on the internet,to complete the jigsaw you must go out on fieldwork,my farmer friend in PH is having similar problems with marketing of cu ,999,so he want to try cu 986 ,it's medium size and lighter olive green in colour, any farmer that depends only on internet info is shortsighted, for me the first stage of farming is the market. I also fell for that in my first season. Cu999 came out big, beautiful and I was happy. I entered the market with my big cucumber, I saw small small cucumbers everywhere, I just hiss and was feeling like the federal minister of agriculture. The buyers came one after the other and returned the hiss on my cucumber. That was when I knew that I was worst than the local farmers that can't read nor write. I knew before then that I had to visit the marker first but in my mind, who would see big cu999 and reject them I was wrong. Experience is truly the best teacher First picture is my cu999 Second picture is the hot cake here. Who knows the variety? I'm waiting for dry season farming. I can't battle downy mildew and still sell a full bag for 2k, when a bag can go as high as 7k during dry season

ifedola28: Ok, so you make as much as 250k from 2 plots of maize Staggers' calculation is not based only on what can be made on 2 plots of maize. If making 250k from 2 plots of maize in 12 weeks is rocket science, I'll never touch maize again in my life. I know how much I would have made if I had planted my preferred crop; cucumber, on that 2 plots. If not for cucumber glut in the market and the need for crop rotation, I have been spoilt by cucumber to start making money 6th week after sowing. Thanks for your input An officer has been assigned to arrest them early tomorrow morning but a Fulani man called me tonight and was begging that we see and talk things out tomorrow. He said he wasn't around, it was his sons that made the mistake |
