Science/TechnologyTutorial: Understanding Tinyos With WSN by funkymedina(op): 4:13pm On Feb 14, 2013
TinyOS is an event-driven operating system for networked applications in wireless embedded systems, with a component-based architecture. It is based on the nesC programming language and its core components require only 400 bytes of memory (data and instruction). While TinyOS is sometimes considered a de facto standard, Contiki has a much easier learning curve for the developer, since it is based on a NesC programming language. This article will deal with how to instal TinyOS and how you can build your own application. Other areas include

 Hardware Primer
 Basic nesC Syntax
 Advanced nesC Syntax
 Network CommunicaAon
 Sensor Data AcquisiAon
 Debugging Tricks and Techniques

Science/TechnologyWireless Sensor Network Nodes For Monitoring Natural Disasters by funkymedina(op): 6:31pm On Feb 12, 2013
Natural disasters are escalating world wide due to many issues including climate change and perhaps the global warming. The losses due to these disasters are increasing at an alarming rate. Hence, it is would be valuable to detect the pre-cursors of these disasters, early warning of the people, a systematic method of evacuating them, and the most important in saving lives. However, these disasters are largely unpredictable and occur within very short spans of time. Therefore technology has to be developed to capture relevant signals with minimum monitoring delay. Wireless Sensor Network has come to stay as one of the cutting edge technologies that can quickly respond to rapid changes of data and send the sensed data to a data analysis centre in areas where cabling is inappropriate.

Recently, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) failed to envisage the recent dramatic disintegration of the Greenland ice sheet; mostly due to the uncertainties in modelling glaciers and ice sheets because of its basal boundary conditions. According to researchers, there is growing evidence that glacier movement are unpredictable as to the traditional belief that glaciers flows slowly and continuously. Therefore, glaciers are suggested to be modelled in a similar faction like earth quakes.

A new project that is funded from the Levehulme Trust titled “Investigating glacier stick-slip motion using a wireless sensor network has been initiated at the University of Southampton, headed by Dr Kirk Martinez. According to the expert, “We plan to use geophones, differential GPS to measure the “slip” and use an improved version of the multisensor Glacsweb probes within the ice and till (glacial sediment) to measure the “stick” phase”. The project so far has deployed a long-term sensor network using the latest technology available. WSN technology has the potential of quick capturing, processing, and transmission of critical data in real-time with high resolution. However, it has its own limitations such as relatively low amounts of battery power and low memory availability compared to many existing technologies. It does, though, have the advantage of deploying sensors in hostile environments with a bare minimum of maintenance. This fulfils a very important need for any real time monitoring, especially in hazardous or remote scenarios..

Science/TechnologyStudent Guide: Principles Of Wireless Sensor Networks by funkymedina(op):
This is to help undergraduate student and others to understand the Principles of Wireless Sensor Network. We all know that WSNs have the potential of dwarfing the revolution that the Internet has brought to the world of computing, entertainment, work, and human interaction by the creation of the Internet of Things. WSNs are networks of tiny, autonomous nodes equipped with wireless transmission and sensing capabilities for a huge variety of applications, such as healthcare, transportation systems, industrial manufacturing automation, and smart grids. The focus of the course is on distributed algorithms and protocols for WSNs.

The aim of this course is to provide the participants with a basic knowledge of WSN. After completing the course the student should

Know the essential control, networking and signal processing tools to cope with WSNs
Understand the design issues of WSNs
Be able to develop sensor network applications

Course main content

The course is divided into three parts:

Nairaland GeneralRe: Video: Real Story Of Nigeria by funkymedina: 7:53pm On Jan 29, 2013
Tony Spike: The narrator did a fair job but lost objectivity in the histories between 1962 and 1970. For example,

1. He skipped the full accounts of what led to the Western region riots.
2. He skipped the full accounts of the scenario of the 1st bloody coup that led to the 2nd bloody coup.
3. He seem to believe that someone in the Western Region betrayed the Eastern region peoples, although, he didn't explain how.
4. He failed to capture the rationale and dynamism of Nigeria's political instability.

Nevertheless, he did a good job with the footages. Those footages are rare archives. To my understanding, the main problem with Nigeria is that no ethnic nationality is willing to be dominated by another. Therefore, I think each nationality should be given their space to operate in a confederal system. I can't blame Ahmadu Bello for saying that statement; I believe he is right to some extent. Meanwhile, the time-frame of this video isn't enough to tell the story of Nigeria. But it's worth looking at...
Please explain what was right about Ahmadu bello's staement and why you dont blame him ? I honestly want to know what ur thinking when u say that ..thanks ( I personally found it vile)
Nairaland GeneralRe: Video: Real Story Of Nigeria by funkymedina: 7:50pm On Jan 29, 2013
Dignitary: Albeit the footages and images are interesting to watch, this cannot be said to be Nigeria's history!!!

The narrator started so well but in the middle of d flick, he allowed emotions (obviously motivated by his love for a particular tribe) to over cloud historical facts!!!

For instance, how on earth can the narrator contend that Awolowo betrayed Ojukwu?

The narrator also said oil was discovered in the east prior to the civil war? Is Niger Delta part of the East ? And this was even after the narrator had stated that the mid west region had been created in 1962! I can go on and on....

*I enjoyed watching the video tho'... But when will Nigerians choose objectivity over ethnic sentiments? Apart from d obvious ethnic bias,it was well put together.
Can u explain the boldened part , are u saying Awo did not take up a position with the military Nigeria and become the highest ranking civilian in the new dictatorship?
If Niger delta is not in the east where was it?
I really want to know, not looking for an argument.. thanks

Na wa for that Ahmadu Bello or Saduana or whatever his name was ..thank God his words were captured on film for posterity and for us to really know him. He would rather employ a foreigner than Nigeiran who is not from the north!! My God, I am disgusted by that man and angry. Why was he angry about ibos being industrious ..the contempt is unbelieveable
