Sports / Footballers To Wear Sensors by funkymedina: 7:13pm On Mar 16, 2013 |
Fabrice Muamba, a 24-year-old professional soccer player in Britain playing for Bolton Wanderers, collapsed during a game last year after suffering cardiac arrest. He’s now up and walking but no more playing football. A 27-year-old Indian soccer player, Venkatesh Dhanraj was not so lucky had a delay in treatment: He died a few days after having cardiac arrest during a match. At least six other professional soccer players around the world have died in the last three years from cardiac-related incidents. As well, not a year goes by now without news of a marathoner who died in a race because of a heart attack or cardiac arrest. BOOTHNow the US National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell imagines a day in the no distant future when players in the American Football league could be checked to determine whether their genetic makeup leaves them more likely to develop brain disease by light wearing helmet that has sensors. With the information gathered by the sensors they might be told to switch to a less dangerous position – or give up football entirely. “In talking to the medical experts over several years, I think there’s a predisposition to most injuries, particularly to the brain, or to brain disease,” Goodell said in an interview with The Associated Press. “So we do want to know what those biomarkers are.” Goodell also envisions players being required – with the union’s OK, of course – to wear helmets containing sensors to detect hits that cause concussions. Those helmets might be lighter and “less of a weapon” than today’s, he said. Those are the kinds of advances the NFL and General Electric are hoping to produce in a partnership that could funnel up to $60 million over four years to research on head injuries and possible improvements to helmets. This idea will go a long way to answer the questions of massive amount of sensor data with more body-tracking gadgets that can record everything from running blood pressure to respiration to perspiration rates and more. Their public-friendly product is a clinically-validated armband that gathers physiological information from three small, sensors underneath the armband. For example, when sensors start collecting a flood of 5,000 data points per minute, including measurements of heat flux (the rate at which heat is dissipating from the body), motion, skin temperature and the skin’s electrical conductivity, are then converted into more meaningful measurements such as the number of calories burned, sleep quality and how efficient the body is overall in performing its metabolic duties. According to Christine Robins, the CEO of BodyMedia, “That manifests itself into accuracy, personalization and more of a health orientation. We are more than an activity tracker or fitness device, we are actually a health management tool,” “The challenge is establishing what people should do with this large volume of new health data, because a lot of consumers don’t think health is their responsibility and that it’s in the realm of their doctor. For some companies, to sell a device and track health is not resonating with people.” says Sarah Rotman Epps, a senior analyst at Forrester Research. brainThe Brain Activity Map initiative, a group of prominent researchers is proposing a large-scale effort to create new tools to map the human brain in unprecedented detail. This could lead to treatments for brain disorders such as epilepsy, autism, dementia, depression and schizophrenia, as well as ways to restore movement in paralyzed patients. According to John Donoghue of Brown University’s department of neuroscience “We don’t actually understand (how circuits of neurons) generate all these interesting behaviours we have, like speech and language and thoughts and memory,” Apple is not left behind as we have heard in the past weeks, the Apple iWatch has made the jump from unlikely rumor to a real product that’s probably in development,... Science/Technology / Sensors In Arduino Platform -tutorial by funkymedina: 8:26pm On Mar 11, 2013 |
This is another article on Sensors using Arduion platform. The first one ‘WSN Made Easy With Arduino Platform? can be found here. This will help you to understand some of the easiest methods to start implementing your sensor nodes. 1 Everything You Need To Know About Arduino Ben teaches you everything you need to know to start using Arduino microcontrollers in your projects. It is important to note the limitation of Arduino platform and areas of improvement if you intend to use the platform for a first project run without spending too much money on new devices. read it all here; http://www.wsnmagazine.com/sensors-in-arduino-platform/ |

Science/Technology / Trans-african Hydro-meteorological Observatory – Sensor Design Competition by funkymedina: 8:48am On Feb 22, 2013 |
The Trans-African Hydro-Meteorological Observatory (TAHMO) is organizing the TAHMO Sensor Design Competition among African Universities. The stations need a suitable sensor that measures climate variables. Therefore, the project is aimed at designing building and operating the 20,000 weather stations in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective is to design a sensor that measures a weather or hydrological variable and is both inexpensive and robust. Top 20 teams with the best (written) designs will be sent a ‘Makers Package’ that will allow them to actually build a prototype. Deadline is 1 March 2013. more information and contact at http://www.wsnmagazine.com/trans-african-hydro-meteorological-observatory-sensor-design-competition/ |
Webmasters / Re: Creating Your Own Website And Not Letting People Cheat You by funkymedina: 12:20am On Feb 22, 2013 |
I love this thread, they nearly ate my head off cause they wanted to form a union and ban people from creating sites for 10k or some rubbish... Who was the model that said she wont get out of bed for any job less than $10k? Famous last words!! Nigerians shold stop being lazy and scared of webdesign like its some magic stuff with codes, its no big deal anymore. But using nairaland as a sample of nigerians; they cant read a post that is more than two paragraphs and keep asking people to summarize for them cause they are intellectually lazy, I say the web design guys should keep cheating them. You cant help people who dont want to help themselves. With all the info and links/video you put in ur first post, someones response is to drop his phone number, I am sure he didnt go thru the links you put there. Didnt do any research .I tire! But hopefully one or two people will gain something from this and find out they can do stuff for themselves. |

Science/Technology / Re: Maths Homework Please Help? by funkymedina: 1:26am On Feb 19, 2013 |
Based onthe examples from the links you posted here is the solution i have come up with 3x+2y-7=19 ------(1) 4x-y+27=4 --------(2) 2x+4y-52=32 -------(3) first step 3x+2y= 26(19+7) 4x-y = -23(4-27) 2x+4y= 84(52+32) Step 2 Multiple equation 2 by "2" and the resulting equation is a prime..So .. 8x-2y= -46 So the equations are now thus .. 3x+2y=26 (1) 8x-2y= -46 (2) 2x+4y=84 (3) Add equation 1& 2 11x = -20(-46+26) *+2y-2y=0 x = -31 Go back to first step equation and substitute x as -31 to solve for Y happy days! * cross check the calculations to make sure i didnt make a mistake, I am not using a calculator for the maths guys in te house if I am wrong abeg no yab me, na philosophy I study the bold part is where u probably got stuck |

Thank you ! I have said it before about external links taking me away from nairaland and its soo annoying. I was told by seun to right click and choose open in new window. I wonder why I have to do this in 2013? He doesnt want to listen to his userS ..the reply above says it alll.. his way or the high way ..so whenever i remember, i right click. This is 2013 not 2006 dont know why u want people to leave ur site. The user experience leaves much to be desired in my opinion. I wonder why an advertiser will be happy to know if someone clicks an ad above urs they leave NAIRALAND AND MAY NOT COME BACK WHEN UR AD COULD HAVE BEEN NEXT ! all i wanted to tell you is to right click and choose open in new window....goodluck! |
