Christianity EtcRe: Conscience Without God by g1(m): 1:13pm On Feb 16, 2010
sinequanon:
I quote Akwasi from the Do We Have To Tolerate Athiest? thread.

I have heard many "God followers" say similar things. Why do they believe this?

As I understand it, they seem to be saying that either. . .

1. It is only by believing in god that one can develop conscience. So, I would like examples of the consciencious things that followers of god do, that non-believers cannot, and do not, do.

or. . .

2. These particular followers of god are not driven by conscience at all, but some form of coercion, like fear, masquerading as conscience.
i hear beleivers ask me that too alot of the time!!!, they are indirectly saying that the only reason that they havent picked up a gun and blasted the people around them is because they believe thay have a celestial 24 hour CCTV camera on them (god), thats a load of rubbish, if only atheist are immoral then how come we find people from all different faiths and backgrounds in prison?,
in nigeria we have a church and mosque on every street but are we the most moral people on the planet? undecided
i live my life by the golden rule: which says do unto others as you have others do to you, this rule has been around before judaism, christianity and islam,

with or without god you have good people doing good stuff and bad people doing bad stuff
i am an atheist i still give charity to the needy, you dont have to believe there is a god looking down at you giving you heaven points for helping someone before you give charity!!, its a natural human instinct to feel for one who needs help and provide them with that help, even animals help one another, i was watching a documentary when a group of elephants came to the aid of a baby elephant just as two lionesses were begining to make their approach on the baby
RomanceRe: Why Do Single Girls Love Married Men? by g1(m): 11:48pm On Feb 15, 2010
because married men are able to provide them with the comfort and financial security that most single guys cant, like a poster above said: nobody likes suffering, i am a guy but i can undesrstand why they do it even though it is not fair to the married women left at home, i guess thats life, its not always fair, good things happen to bad people and viceversa, just live with it!!!

FamilyRe: What If I Don't Want Children? by g1(m): 7:14pm On Feb 12, 2010
@poster, there is absolutely nothing wrong in not wanting to have kids, we all cant have the same likes and dislikes, some people like the colour red, some like black, some people like alcohol some dont, etc, dont listen to what people think you should do, rather do what you think is best for you, there is no way all of us will want the same thing.
I have a friend who together with her spouse have chosen to remain childless, they both dont want kids and they are both happy with their decision
i personally am not a big fan of kids too, but if people love kids and want to have them then am happy for them,

peaceout
Christianity EtcRe: Religion Section Getting Dryer by g1(m): 6:00pm On Feb 12, 2010
to be honest with you, i think the most intriguing debates for or against religon have already been treated, so i doubt you will get those type of long interesting debates that you are talking about, i as a new comer here had to dig through the archives of nairaland to read them,
and another theory could be due to the fact that it  will technically be impossible for someone here to convince another of his beliefs, i.e. i dont see abuzola leaving islam no matter the argument against it, i dont see davidylan leaving christianity no matter the argument against it and likewise i dont see huxley, mazaje etc becoming believers no matter the argument against it, etc
so i think the  main andrenalin pumping topics have been exhausted, maybe we could re-vist the old topics that have been forgotten, may be some people might just have new ideas to add , just my opinion
Christianity EtcRe: Is This How We Plan To Root Out Religious Fundamentalism? Which Is Worse? by g1(m): 11:38pm On Feb 11, 2010
Chrisbenogor:
In times of war right and wrong are so close that its almost impossible to differentiate them. A girl runs out of a church to answer an important call from her boss and some of these goons are passing by, just before she knows it her other ear is off and they begin chasing everyone into the church with their machetes, it took the pastor of the church bringing out a gun from his pulpit to make the goons run away, but if she were your sister and you had a gun in your hand at that moment would you think of right and wrong? I doubt that. BTW that was a real life story one of the few skirmishes that sparked the fight.
i feel you chris, but both sides are guilty, i have a fellow atheist friend here in abuja who is an ex-christian and he happened to be driving through jos during the crises and he was stopped at a road block setup by christians and asked to recite john 3:16, he was lucky to have still been able to remember it, as they were letting him go he noticed that they stopped another car behind him after which they started smashing the car and pouring kerosene on the car about to set it ablaze, its obvious then that the occupants of that other car could not recite john 3:16 so they were not spared, so we cant just blame one group of people , like i said both sides are guilty,

in between, i sent you a yahoo instant message! r u signed in?

davidylan:
its what islamic fundamentalists understand. I say continue shooting them.
i think you r missing the point here david, its about the nigerian security forces, its not only in maiduguri they carry out this kind of acts, they do it every where even in niger delta too,

Christianity EtcRe: Are There Really Destinies? by g1(m): 5:24pm On Feb 10, 2010
deluxecad:
@g1: I'm talking about destiny as it relates to what happens to a person while he yet lives. Are our lives programmed to follow an unavoidable path or pattern?
no i dont believe our lives are programmed to follow an unavoidable path or pattern? life is what you make of it depending on the circumstances you find yourself, so in order words i do not believe in destiny

@g1, you're absolutely right. . . I should not have made such ungaurded statements, and there's no excuse I offer here for having done so (which is why I have crossed out that word against him).

Christianity EtcRe: What Is The Fundamental Difference Between Science And Religion? by g1(m): 12:37pm On Feb 10, 2010
sinequanon:
Fair enough. I understand. You were not necessarily giving your own opinion, but opinions you have heard from others.

I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone who believes they can see and articulately describe a fundamental difference between religion and science.
well it might be difficult to find some one who will give you what you are looking for, like i said they will most likely fall into the 3 categories i mentioned before,
1--if there are hardline atheist i.e they totally reject the supernatural, they will have a problem reconciling their world view and some of the supernatural claims of religion

2-- if they are really fundamental in their religion like Young Earth Creationist who believe that the earth is a few thousand years old then they will reject the scientific claims that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old

3--then you have a group of christians and muslims and other theists who do not see a clash between science and religion, they have no problem reconciling science with their faith.

you said you want an articulated explanation of a fundamental difference, which means you are looking for answers from the first two groups and answers from the first two groups will most likely be highly biased and extreme to either side, and i guess you might not be looking for an extreme end answer?
Christianity EtcRe: Abolish Religion ? by g1(m): 12:17pm On Feb 10, 2010
@viaro, how you dey?

i as an atheist does not agree with all dawkins'points, i do prefer the carl sagan and some of betrand russell type of atheism but to be honest despite his short comings i dont think we can label dawkins a "dunce" afterall you were the one who advised me that insults and namecalling does not help in arguments, hope u r doing good?
Christianity EtcRe: Are There Really Destinies? by g1(m): 11:57am On Feb 10, 2010
@poster, i myself dont believe in destiny, i just live life and take it as it comes whichever way, if something good happens i enjoy the moment and be happy about it, if something bad happens i accept it as it is and move on, s.h.it happens you cant always have stuff your own way,
finally like one poster said if there is one destiny i believe in then it is death, we humans like all evolved species out there must die, get rotten and turn to dust!!!! its the fact of life

peaceout
PoliticsRe: OBJ May Die In Prison —prophet by g1(m): 11:57am On Feb 10, 2010
these foolish nigerian prophets with their lies have come again and they are always predicting bad stuff, if its not someone dying, then it will be a plane crash, or it will be a tsunami, and some gullible people will believe them, why cant they ever tell us something good? how come no one told us about chimamanda, or anyother good things that happen to nigeria,
Christianity EtcRe: What Is The Fundamental Difference Between Science And Religion? by g1(m): 11:28am On Feb 10, 2010
sinequanon:
I have heard this line of argument before. I will assume that you have thought deeply about it and not just repeated it because it sounds nice. grin

Are you applying like for like? Science is scientifically tested (which is self-referential).

Are you suggesting that religious ideas are not religiously tested (witnessed, etc.) -- also self-referential.

Or are you being biased, and suggesting that religious ideas have not been cross-referentially scientifically tested.
i am not being biased like i said in my post some dont see a difference while some do,

some christians and muslims cant accept human evolution because they claim that it goes against what is in their holy books, likewise some people cant accept what is in the holy books because they agree with human evolution and you finally have a third group who dont have a problem accepting both positions, so like i said it all depends on whose perspective you are looking at it from
Christianity EtcRe: What Is The Fundamental Difference Between Science And Religion? by g1(m): 11:13am On Feb 10, 2010
@ poster, it depends on which way you look at it, some people dont have a problem with the two coexisting while some others think they work in two different directions i.e: :

Science:

we have observed and tested the evidence and facts before us, lets now reach a conclusion

while Religion:

we already have the conclusions, lets now look for the evidence and facts to back them up!
PoliticsRe: I Bought Fuel N65 A Liter Stress Free That Means This Week'll Be A Great One ! by g1(m): 11:48pm On Feb 08, 2010
@ poster na so me self see am wow, i could not believe my eyes when i saw filling stations without queue here in abuja shocked shocked shocked, i have been surviving on black market fuel for a while, so to just drive into filling station and not spend more that 10 mins was a welcome development, but i smell a rat here how come the scarcity just dissappeared in a couple of days after rilwan lukman threathened the top executives in the oil sector? could it be that the scarcity was artificial?

BusinessRe: If F.g. Stops Subsidy Of Petrol, Why Spend State Funds On "holy Pilgrimage" ? by g1(m): 9:32pm On Feb 08, 2010
@poster i agree with you, any muslim or christian that wants to go for pilgrimage should sponsor him/herself after all whatever god you worship he will not punish you if you cant afford to go for pilgrimage,

nigeria is a secular country i dont know why this still goes on!!!
, if we are going to use government funds to send muslims to mecca or christians to jerusalem then we might as well sponsor ogun and sango worshippers to their shrines,
