jlo247: Imagine, a lecturer will be boasting that in the previous years no one have A in his course. In fact in my own school after u have seen your score on the score sheet that you have A Or B in a particular course don't be carried away with your score because when the broad sheet comes out one may end up carrying the course it happens to a friend of mine. And ur course adviser will only advice you to go and re write the course that you had already passed. Our course adviser are not helping us at all. Sometimes when u meet them for help it may be on results issue or another thing they will tell u that they don't want to have any misunderstanding with any lecturer so go and help ur self. All this shit cannot happen in private University. All the same I rep UNILAG haha... That was how I was not graded for my project for first semester, it took me 3weeks to persuade the project coordinator and my supervisor was not around. The idiot just put C there for me, the other guy that we both had same issue had E. |

linsa01: One day during my undergraduate days, I asked one of my lecturers why has my dept not produced 1st class and his response was... how many profs have taught us? He said until we pass through the hands of 6-10 profs and still maintain our good grades. That is what I'm made to believe in public unis. So my question is that how many profs are there in private universities?
Private university students get grades cos they pay so much for their education, so your little must be rewarded. I don't blame them for the high fees. at least they will pay their staff and maintain the school. Oga which kind of assumption is that. Throughout my 5years in Unilag, Mechanical Engineering don't have professor(s) because they all retired the almost the same time. That never stopped them from producing first class and best overall student in the school. |

McSterling: Fact is many of us who attended/attend public institutions have been hardwired to think graduating with a good grade is such a big deal. This is because of the abuse of power by lecturers in public institutions. These lecturers deliberately make a fuss out of easy courses, scare students and set exams in such a way that several would fail. Sometimes they reduce your score or fail you outrightly. Imagine a lecturer telling his students before exams that nobody will get an A in his course. A lecturer of mine would hardly give an A no matter what you write, even when you churn out facts from both textbooks and notes. Makes you wonder, "what fvcking else does this man want from me?" I remember taking CHM 101 in my first year. This was practically basic chemistry. There was nothing in the course I didn't know before, but we had about 3 lecturers handling it and they made such a fuss of this course such that freshers failed en masse at the end of the day.
It is hard for us to accept that private universities like CU only do things the right way. It's more convenient to say they're substandard. It isn't so had to get a first class or second class upper, provided you're studious. That's why many Nigerians perform excellently in universities abroad. Cut out the excesses of lecturers and public institutions will probably churn out more first class students. You have said it all. Let me add to your points. Many of our public school lecturers are lazy and backward. Could you imagine a student asking his lecturer about new things he read about a course and the lecturer told him if you write anything like that for me in my exam he will fail him. Presently now, I was reading some things in my discipline, I realised that I am lagging behind. I told my colleagues that, we don't know anything we are just trained to read and pass. I have concluded my mind not to ever discriminate between Public Universities or Private universities because, have met good product from public and private universities. Have read research papers from private universities most especially from CU and Babcock university |

The school management and the students allocated in that hostel are to be blamed. The school do not take care of the hostels, they embezzled the funds for hostels. As the population of students increases, the school managements didn't bothered to build new hostels. The last time they renovated most of the hostels in Unilag was in 2012, when Lagos state hosted sport festival. It was even Lagos state govt that renovated it.
The students are to be blamed also, some students would defecate on the floor. Some won't use water to flush after using the lavatory. High population in each room. A room for 4 students would turn to 12 occupants in a room. |

udemzy101: Being a first class student brings more respect, you have a better chance of getting employed, however there are some first class graduate out there still looking for job too, some of them are not innovative.
In fact our educational system is bad, where student think is all about getting a good grade and after that get yourself a secured job.
First class is a big deal in the essence that it's not easy to achieve that fit, and it's also not a big deal cos it doesn't guarantee you will be greater than someone with 2.1.. You talked like the way one of my lecturers do talk. The man would say, education is not about just cram and have good grades, the man do tell us he doesn't believe in exam because most times is not the true test of knowledge. He told us be innovative and create a network for yourself. |

naijalander: I agree if after victimisation you come out with a good result, it means you have a strong spirit. Being Ajebo doesn't mean you don't have a strong spirit either, it simply suggests your parents worked hard enough or 'stole hard' enough to provide you with a better life.
What of the millions more that end up either quiting school or failing due to victimisation, does that mean they don't deserve a good life? The end product of good education is good character not First class? Good character is what builds a good society.
So having access to good facilities to learn means 'being treated like an egg?' That is the problem with Fed school graduates, the belief that if things are well organized, then it's not good.
Your opinion also suggests low self esteem, not all private school students are from rich homes, why would you assume because a person pays N1m in fees, the parents must be over loaded. Some parents hustle for it. Some postpone building their houses so their children can receive good education.
You should also know that private school kids face as much pressure as Fed school kids, would you want to waste your parent's money?
Nobody deserves the crap public institutions put their students through, period! Bro, you made valid points. |

OneManLegion: Let's imagine that the story's true, how does that story make private universities better or even attain peership with their federal counterparts? Did your cousin tell a private uni lecturer that same thing and was met with a warm and positive response?
Lesson: Just because your school your school doesn't have doesn't mean most federal schools don't and it certainly doesn't mean a private uni does. If he attends a private university, he is going to ask his lecturer the same question. Most of our lecturers don't know how to relate with students at all. Throughout my program at the university of Lagos. Only two lecturers were closer to us. You ask them question, they answer you. If they don't know it they will tell you they will give you a feedback the next class. One of them left my department for ExxonMobil, she told us, the way things are done and the content of our syllabus is below the syllabi in Europe and US. Am telling you the fact we need serious reform in our higher institutions. When Prof Soyinka, told Nigerians that all higher institutions should be shutdown for 2years and be reformed, many Nigerians castigated him. Meanwhile, he just told us the truth without mincing words. |

Nusaf: Where do u think private universities source their lecturers from? Most of these graduates of private universities were withdrawn from public universities due to poor academic performances. They simply could not cope with the academic demands of public schools. A true first class graduate is one who was able to pass through all challenges in a public university and still emerge with that grade. Remember, degree is awarded both in character and learning. As such you must be able face all challenges, including the unruly behaviours of your lecturers. Bro, what is happening in government universities isn't the way it supposed to be. Many lecturers do what they like in govt universities because, there are no checks and balances. A lecturer in govt university would tell you he can do anything he likes nobody can stop him because he was employed by FG whereas, in private universities they work hard for what they earn because, they can't intimidate students and they have everything to disseminate information. Many of my lecturers do lecture in private universities. They tell us the differences between them. |
