Car Talk › Re: Have You Taught A Spouse To Drive? by GAZZUZZ(m): 6:35am On Oct 05, 2014
CityNG:
So I had a brainstorm today to save money, instead of paying the driving school to yeah the Wife to drive I would teach her myself.
15 minutes later we have both decided that it's probably better for our marriage to have a neutral party be the teacher grin
My life flashed before my eyes like 10 times.
So how did your Spouses learn how to drive?
5 years ago honda accord 1990 model manual transmission, darling left is clutch center is the brakes, right is the gas pedal...... You press the clutch down before you engage the first gear, you relase the clutch gently while applying a little pressure on the gas pedal and the car will move I was really boiling after the car had stalled liked 100times grin, I never allowed my life flash b4 my eyes all was field work till the day I said ur ready go on your own may the lord be with u grin I created a large Lunatic sticker sorry learner pasted it on the 4 sides of the car and waved her bye bye

She's a great driver now cause I drilled her really well b4 letting her go off on her own, but there were times I couldn't take it any more and she would wonder what all the fuss was about angry at the end I'm happy I taught her. CityNg give it another try.

9icetoo:
The 2az fe or 1mz fe in the toyota camry calls for 5w 30 or 10w 30. 5w 30 is preferred though. it is quite difficult to find dyno oils in this weight ratings here in Nigeria. The popular lube makers still favor the 20w 50 and sae 40 weight ranges. You will agree with me that these are not suitable for the camry. Mobil 1 and total quartz 9000 though expensive and synthetic are closer matches to the spec demanded. Qaurtz 9000 is 5w 40 while Mobil 1 is 0w 40. the interval between changes in synthetic makes up for the initial cost. let me do a small analysis. Mobil XHP is N3,000 and if u go with the every three months rule as propounded by naija mechs, that's 4 changes in a year which is N12,000. Add the cost of labour and filters (N1,000 for labour x 4 changes = N4,000), (N1,500 for filter x 4 changes = N6,000). Total is N22,000. this is for the dyno oil. For Mobil 1; Mobil 1 is N8,000 filter is N1,500, labor is N1,000. For two changes in a year, it will cost you N21,000. u spend less time at the mechs shop, u spend a bit less money and u run ur car on a synthetic oil for peace of mind. Running on synthetic will not burn a hole in ur pocket as u believe. Some people actually use their synthetic oils for a year based on miles covered. The average Nigerian drives about 5,000 miles a year. CityNG, the OP is in Nigeria so i was replying with the Nigerian context in mind. There are very few choice of dyno oils here in Nigeria and adulteration is a big issue as well. I am not saying he must use Mobil 1. It just happens to be that it is popular brand here whose quality can be attested. I have come across Toyota branded dyno oil with the 10w 30 weight but it was still as expensive as the synthetic oils. Same price exactly which made me opt for the synthetic oil. I use Total quartz 9000 by the way.
I do 200km a day, 1000km a week, 4000km a month minimum, can't even think of using mineral oils.

sleekpro: I have thesame car, but green in colour, it has thesame problem to, mine packed me @ ajakuta on my way from kastina state to enugu. I was stop at a police check point, after checking my pepers, and I was ask to go, that's when the car refused to start, thee police directed me to a mechanic workshop were the car was leter towed there, after a series of scan, I was ask to change the crank shaft sencor, I did but to no avail, they leter said ignation, I did but to no avial, now they said its now brain box, and to get all thjis parts, I've to travel to onisha from kogi state. Now the parts seller has to come for my rescure, he now toke me to a nissan specialist who said my brain box is ok, that even if I change the engine, it will still not start, that all I have to do is to bring the keys for reactivation, that it has expired, and that's exactly what he did and behold my car is sound and good to go!
Praisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss the LORD!
The person who did the original scan did not detect and immobilizer code? It would have saved you all the stress.

rickkid: Stiff when driving. Especially when the engine is hot or the AC is on.
Dat one is not a diy, your money must be choped these are your likely culprits

Preasure plate and clutch disk, I usually just change the material on the worn out clutch disk (costs me 800naira) and buy a new pressure plate, tokumbor cost me 3k don't know how much a new one costs. But don't buy anything untill the whole thing is checked by a qualified technician, these are just my views of what could be bad.

I'm rulling out a stiff leaver and lack of oil in the gearbox because u said its stiff only when driving.
Car Talk › Re: Where To Do Up A Kia Rio In Lagos by GAZZUZZ(m): 11:40am On Oct 03, 2014
rickkid: You are awesome smiley
I don't need to spend nearly as much as I first thought. Just checked and it's as you say. The fuses are gone. Altogether won't cost up to 3k to fix everything up. smiley That just leaves the stiff gearshift. You wouldn't happen to know what oil to buy and how to use it would you? I mean since God sent you my way this morning I might as well ask away grin grin
Stiff when driving or stiff at all times?
Car Talk › Re: Where To Do Up A Kia Rio In Lagos by GAZZUZZ(m): 10:39am On Oct 03, 2014
rickkid: Actually this is exactly what seems to have happened. So what needs changing? Both fuse and alternator? And when you say damaged radio, does that mean it needs to be replaced outright? :/
Radio fuse check, if you replace it and it blows again, then the protective diode in the radio must be replaced for it to work, if you were good at DIY this would cost you (10naira) grin for the alternator it is possible its still working fine get a multimeter and set it to DC volts 20 then start the car, if you get 13-14 volts it might be working well also check if the battery icon is displayed on the instrument panel while the engine is running if this is happening the alternator is faulty and should be replaced. Above all the fuse sparky replace with a wire is 125a it carries very heavy current and might be broken again, please remove the wire and search for the fuse should cost less than 200naira. If the fuse is blown the alternator will not charge even if it is working or not.

The alternator should be arround 5-7k for tokumbor (it might be less) just judging by the price of the entire engine (70k)
Car Talk › Re: Where To Do Up A Kia Rio In Lagos by GAZZUZZ(m): 10:05am On Oct 03, 2014
I have a kia rio 07 model and I'm guessing a few of these things might have happened to your car. Someone might have swapped the terminals of the battery which would result in a damaged radio and possibly a damaged alternator. Luckily you didn't damage your engine computer, the first thing you would notice is a blown 125A fuse in the fuse box which your sparky would have joined using a thick copper wire, unfortunately your battery might continue to deplete cause of the faulty alternator. These are my thoughts I might be wrong.

Autos › Re: Sold! Sold!! Sold!!! Registered Nissan Murano 2004 @ 590k by GAZZUZZ(m): 7:08am On Oct 03, 2014
Iv inspected and bought cars for less value, any intersted buyer should go and inspect, bargain based on faults noticed, e.g remove the price of engine and labour costs in fixing a new engine dass all.

P.s there are times when you have pressing issues and the easyest thing to let go off is a car, (assuming you have more than one) you don't expect a person with pressing issues to start spending another 200k on replacing the engine on a car he intends to sell to solve a problem? Meanwhile nah market op never stated it was his last price who knows he may sell for much less grin

Car Talk › Re: Troublesome Camry And Vibration by GAZZUZZ(m): 9:12pm On Oct 02, 2014
fsb: Dear NL motor enthusiasts,

I have this 1997 Toyota camry, automatic tranny. In the last few months, it developed one problem. The car vibrates while idling and the gear is in 'Drive' mode. As soon as the gear is shifted into 'Neutral' or 'Park', the vibration/rough idling disappears totally.

Anyway, a few months later, a failed oil pressure switch plus leaking oil destroyed the engine. Both the engine and gearbox were replaced. Sadly, a few days of driving the car and the same problems returned.

What could be wrong here? Any ideas would be helpful. My friend's Honda Accord 2008 developed exactly the same problem and the mechanic was thinking it could be as a result of a bad gear mount plus his lower control arm bushing.

Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated.
1st the ideal thing to do is to run a scan, it will norrow down your issues, 2nd thing is to eliminate the possible faults, what is constant in your vehicle. That could cause rough idling? assuming all the sensors on the new engine are ok,
1. Fuel pressure
2.Ecu
3.Harness (wiring)
4. Oxygen sensors
5..Map sensor
So what parts did you reuse? And what parts did you replace?

Please run a scan and post the codes here for better analysis of your problem.
