A 300-level Sociology student of the University of Ilorin, Jephtaph Abolarin took a bold step as he withdraws from the institution after confessing he cheated during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination, authorities have confirmed.

According to Abolarin who says he is now a ‘born again’ Christian, it would be sinful to continue using the certificate for any purpose.

In his letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, Abolarin said he wanted to withdraw from the school because he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.

The university’s Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, has confirmed the withdrawal.

Abolarin’s letter read in part, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all over again.”

18-year-old Hussein Emmanuel had his eyes gouged out by his friend and other accomplices for ritual.

The teenager who hails from Sara village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area was deceived by his best friend identified as one David Arafat who had promised to secure a job for him in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Daily Trust reports that, David allegedly connived with another accomplice, Jerry and led Hussein to a river in Sara village where they attacked him and gouged out his eyes.

Emmanuel Iliya, the victim’s father disclosed said that David asked his son for money in order to assist him to secure employment in Port Harcourt. The devastated father said he borrowed N5,000 from a friend in order to assist his son make the journey.

An uncle of the victim, Haruna Iliya, who spoke to Daily Trust said that the suspect knew the victim through another friend, Amos Munga, who has travelled to Ibadan.

He explained that the victim was earlier taken to Abuja by David, whom he said has a wife and a child there, but the victim was sent back home by the suspect to look for more money for his onward journey to Port Harcourt.

Bauchi State Police Public Relation Officer, ASP Mahmood Mohammed, who confirmed the incident said that the police will provide details on the issue later as investigation is ongoing. The suspect is still at large.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani, has warned the Federal Government to put short-term measures in place to cushion the effect of the current economic crisis on the Nigerian masses or risk the people dying before he completes his reforms.

The lawmaker, who represents Kaduna-Central Senatorial District at the Senate, told Sunday Punch that many lives would have been lost before the current reforms of the President Muhammadu Buhari government are completed.

According to him, “If you happen to be in a position of power, inasmuch as you want to bring reforms that are painful, you have to understand the need for you to carry the people along because if you keep on bringing reforms and continue to unleash hardship on the people, you may as well say there is a paradise but people need to be alive to reach that paradise.

“If you keep reforming and reforming and the people are suffering and dying, you may reach the Promised Land alone because by that time everyone has died. Of what use would that be?”

Sani, who criticised Buhari for not having an independent economic team to drive the economy out of recession, noted that the goodwill the All Progressives Congress, APC, enjoyed at the polls, which led to the emergence of Buhari as president, was waning fast.

This, he said, is in view of the increasing number of open letters on the hardships being suffered by Nigerians.

His words, “Let me tell you how it started, which is general with all persons who just took power in Nigeria. In 1979 and 1999, when a new president assumed office, he would have the support of all Nigerians. The first stage will be, ‘We support you; we stand by you and we are going to back you.’

“The second stage will be, ‘We are advising you.’ The third stage will be, ‘We are cautioning you.’ At the fourth stage, Nigerians will say, ‘We are warning you.’ The fifth stage will be, ‘We doubt you.’ The sixth stage, it will be, ‘You are incompetent.’ The seventh stage will be, ‘You should go.’

“When you study these stages, you will see that we have moved behind 100 per cent support to “advise.” And with letters flying and criticisms following, it is about “cautioning.” And I think the handwritings are on the wall for everybody to see.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration lacks the fiscal discipline, know-how and resolve to move the country out of recession.

The PDP said statements by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, that the present administration of Buhari will focus on fiscal discipline and diversification to move the country out of recession is a clear indication that the government is clueless.

According to the opposition party, available statistics show that Adeosun’s comments about fiscal discipline and diversification are mere empty rhetoric.

The PDP in a statement issued yesterday by Deji Adeyanju, Director, New Media said, “ we believe a recession is not reversed by diversification. A recession is reversed by implementing a stimulus package designed to cut taxes, reduce the cost of doing business and boost spending on infrastructure and other critical sectors of the economy.

“ Available data shows that the Buhari administration has spent a meagre 19 percent of the allocation for CAPEX in #Budget2016. This sort of spending will not make any sort of impact on the economy.

“ Assuming, but not conceding that Mrs. Adeosun was right, the challenge is the past 15 months show that despite the glib talk, the Buhari administration is doing neither.

It said despite claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government that it is weeding ghost workers from the system, “Nigeria’s wage bill increased from N1.65tr in 2014 to N1.83tr and N1.71tr in 2015 and 2016 respectively. These figures represent a combined total increase of N240bn from the wage bill in 2014.”

Furthermore, the PDP noted that, “ two days ago, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released its economic report for Q2 2016, which showed that the FG incurred a N1.09tr deficit for the quarter. This deficit was 96 percent higher than the N555.49b allowed.

“Total expenditure for this period stood at N1.76 trillion, surpassing the provisional quarterly budget estimate by 12.8 per- cent, representing a 58.1 percent increase of the Q1 expenditure.

“ These figures show an abject lack of fiscal discipline in the management of the nation’s finances by the Buhari administration.

“On diversification, GDP figures re- leased by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) yesterday show that the Buhari administration is doing significant harm to non-oil sectors of the economy. Some of those figures include: Non-oil GDP contracted by -0.38 percent in Q2 2016 from -0.18 percent in Q1 2016 and 3.46 percent in Q2 2015.Furthermore, CBN figures show that non-oil export fell by 43.2 percent to $576.97m in Q2 2016. As the data shows, even sectors that experienced growth in Q2 have slowed considerably compared to Q1 2016 & Q2 2015.”

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in a letter posted on its website by its spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari. It spoke of the need for regular dialogue to take place for the Nigerian union to survive.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina welcomed the cessation of hostilities by the Avengers as “a good development which is in the interest of the country and especially the Niger Delta people.”

He said “anything that portends peace is always good,” adding that “we hope that it cuts across board and it is sincere.”

The Avengers alleged that the Federal Government was out to execute a predetermined genocide against the people of the Niger Delta through the recently launched Operation Crocodile Smile, which the military high command has explained as just a training drill designed to prepare the Amphibious Division for a better mastery of the Niger Delta terrain.

The group also observed that the Nigerian system would work better if the Federal Government learns from the developed democracies to allow internal protests and conflicts aimed at the greater good of the nation.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to put away the garb of a stooge to the imperialists, whenever he speaks outside Nigeria. We have listened carefully and halted hostilities in the Niger Delta. We expect a genuine and positive attitude to restructuring and self-determination for every component unit of Nigeria. Dear president, what makes those countries (Japan, Germany, France, USA, Britain etc.) great is the ability of their governments to accommodate internal protestations and conflicts for the greater good of their nations over the years.

“Nigeria is not a one-man personal property. We must have these talks every time if this union must continue to work as one. The people of the Niger Delta have been living here from time immemorial, so we have the secret of the terrain and survival of amphibious operations.

“No amount of troop surge and simulation exercises will make you win the oil war; you can only win battles. I really do not know on what ground they had to deny them visas since it’s not the first time they will participate in a scrabble competition. According to Wellington Jighere, a professional Nigerian scrabble player, Nigeria’s Scrabble team have been denied visas to go participate in this year’s MSI World Scrabble Championships.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo, in reaction to rumours of his sudden death as a result of ill health has said that he is not in a hurry to die but live to complete his assignment for the people Imo state. He made this statement on Thursday shortly after arriving Sam Mbakwe Airport Owerri, from a foreign trip.

Addressing a large crowd that gathered at the airport to welcome him, the governor described the rumours of his health condition as `false.’

“I am not in a hurry to die; I will live to complete my assignment for Imo people.

“I went to the land of the dead and our ancestors turned me back saying it was not yet time,” he said.

The governor however, acknowledged that he had a challenge that took him far from the physical.

He informed the crowd that he was healthy and strong, adding that those who wished him dead were enemies of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Sam Onwuemedo said last week that Okorocha traveled outside the country to attract investors to Imo.

Shortly after the governor’s departure, it was rumoured that he was dead, while some reports in the social media claimed that the governor’s health condition was bad.
