Messi takes the ball and goes past two men before before scoring or Assisting a goal, whoscored will record every effort put into that goal; the distance covered, the two succesful dribbling, the solo effort, etc. But when another gets a tap-in goal, he gets only credit for the goal.

On Gomez, whoscored also looks at a number of important stats.
Saves vs number of shots, Saves vs point bank Shots, Saves on one vs one situations. Errors leading to goal. I must mention too that the solidity of the defence also determines a goalkeeper's exposure.
