Crime / My Near-Death Experience On 31st December 2020 by geek4k(m): 3:34pm On Jan 02, 2021
Despite the ecstatic vibe attached to the last day of the year (Gruesome 2020 especially), It ended sadly for me as I experienced a near death situation.

On 31st December, I and my friend decided to experience a great cross-over night at Glory Dome, Dunamis Church Abuja. We boarded a bus from Arab junction, Jabi to Lugbe where the Church is located.

Less than halfway through the journey, the bus began to develop issues and finally stopped just before Wuye Arab bridge. We all had to come down from the vehicle in pursuit of an alternative to our various destinations.

I and my friend walked over to the other end of the bridge while we waited for a cab heading our route. Unluckily for us, we stood there for a while, we couldn’t find any cab as most of them were already filled up and most of the other passengers had already gone their separate ways.

It was becoming dark, lonely, and scary giving the nature of the place we were standing. Just less than 4feets our back were bushes, albeit downhill, and underneath the bridge is a railway track, you won’t be able to tell even because it’s filled with outright darkness.

It was becoming tiring and frustrating, we looked down and noticed 3 guys heading our position, they were seated initially for some while, we both thought they were from same vehicle we boarded and frustrated as we were, my friend suggested we team up with them and look for cab together, I jokingly replied “What if they’re here to rob us..?” We both laughed.

Unbeknownst to us, they actually were. They got closer and to where we were standing, subtly attempting to encircle us while I was looking forward to them passing us, my friend ran off immediately, before I could realize they already formed a triangle grid around me each of them bearing long, sharp knives shouting “Hey! hey!! bring your pocket..!!”.

Being ganged up, held down and threatened to be stabbed if you don’t comply, It was indeed a vicious moment for me, and all I could think of was how I could get out of that situation unhurt. But despite the fear that engulfed me, I stood my ground holding my pocket firmly while they tried to forcefully penetrate in with their hands.

My friend was on the other side, almost at the middle of the express road shouting “Thieves..!” to at least call the attention of motorists but they all formed swirled track avoiding him, perhaps thinking it was a plot to get the robbed?

After several resistance from my end, I got stabbed on my thigh by one of the guys, I then had to let go as they emptied my pocket, carting away with my phone and wallet.

Attempting to run back into the bush, I immediately went after the one that got my phone, he kind of lost orientation and was almost headed towards the bridge while his other gang were heading to the bush. He immediately turned around swinging his long knife so I wouldn’t get close, he then threw the phone to his other gang in the bush and they all ran away.

These robbers were skinny, tall hausa boys all wearing face caps, I was so devastated that if I had a gun, I wouldn’t hesitate even in a split second to put three bullets in their heads. Why does bad thing always happen to good people? I’m not insinuating I’m a saint but I’ll never to this to a fellow. Why me?

Anyways, after the sad occurrence of losing everything I had and almost my life, it reasonable to go back home just as my friend suggested, but instead we still waited, get a cab and head to the church where we had the cross over night. I personally didn’t have any good experience despite dancing and joyous experience everyone had there.

I lost my Samsung A30, Gtb, Diamond and Payoneer debit cards and some cash in the wallet all to one night

Anyways, I’m looking for who can track my phone using maybe the IMEI number? the phone pack, receipt are still intact.

Lastly, kindly learn from my story and avoid that Wuye bridge at all cost.

Crime / How I Was Scammed In A Broad Day Light In Abuja. by geek4k(m): 1:01am On Feb 07, 2019
Hey guys!

This is quite a long read, yet an insightful piece. I have made it succinct as possible while making sure it engulfs wholly the key points. So make sure to grab a cup of popcorn or a bottle of water as you read through.

It all started on an early-sunny Saturday afternoon while I was walking my way home.

With a slight feeling of ecstasy depicted with a light-warm smile on my face, garnished by the symphonious rhythm of “Doing it wrong” by Drake wink YEH! I just withdrew little cash which I planned to give myself a little treat later that evening.

While I was still deliberating whether to have roasted fish or chicken with a chilled bottle of Origin “Brother please excuse me” so I heard as I turned behind to see who called my attention.

He was a black tall man in his late 30s. Please, I’m looking for so so… hotel, he said. Having been living in Kubwa, Abuja since the past 20years I’ve never heard such name as a hotel before. Sorry, sir I don’t know, maybe you should ask those people over there, I said pointing at a direction of seated people why I made haste to go.

Immediately some 2guys walked past us. He quickly threw the same question at them and one of them pointed at a direction he should follow to get to where he’s going to.

Quick note: It was at this point the play actually began, just to avoid confusion I’d assign quick names to the accomplices. x and y will be the two folks that walked past us while Mr. A will be the man who stopped me.

Mr A then thanked us gratefully for trying to help out. He made a fuss of the moment by saying to the x guy “You plan on travelling, make sure to pray about it”. He immediately turned to the y guy saying “You give your clothes out; your enemies are using it to plan against you”. He then turned to me. he said, “You walk barefooted, it’s too dangerous”. What tha..?!! I think his proverb to me translate how spiritually vulnerable I am. My mom had always said that too.

While we stood there astonished, I went totally numbed given what he just said. He introduced himself as a man of God… , gave me a scripture to read in the Bible (Psalm 23) as he did to x and y. He also said he works with Father Mbaka and that he came down to Abuja for a ministration assigned to him. He thanked us again, turned and crossed the main road and went towards where he was directed to.

Guy do you know this man? The y guy asked me. No, I don’t! he just stopped me as he did to y’al. “How he take know say I dey travel” – asked the x guy with confusion boldly written all over his face. I need to have his number, this man is no ordinary – said the y guy talking to his pal. They walked towards Mr. A. Just out of curiosity, I followed them.

We outwalked Mr. A, met him and politely asked for his number. He refused, saying he only minister to people when directed by his god, he doesn’t give out his personal number. He also said since we’ve made effort to meet him he was going to tell us more about the revelations he had about us.

At that moment in time, the whole experience seemed very light and somewhat significant moment of my life.

Mr. A started by asking our names, which we responded. Summarily, the way he talked, he made us felt comfy, easy to confined in and communicate with.

Mr. A went on preaching to us about forgiveness and helping the less fortunate. He talked about forgiveness for a while and made me promised him to help the less privileged. While all these were happening, we were walking down the road heading to the so-called hotel.

Metaphorically, Mr. A spat fire as he spoke. There was this aura of authority and confidence when he said things.

He further revealed to me that I’d have long been a graduate, that I was supposed to have gained a scholarship to school abroad over 6 years ago. He also said I was born to be a very successful person, well recognized and respected. Hearing that my heart beat in affirmation, I had already seen the writings on the wall. He asked about my current state, I answered with full honesty.

He continued by telling me about a mystery woman who has always been marking my footprint because she had issues with my mom and swore to her grave never to forgive her nor her children. which according to him is the reason I haven’t yet manifested.

He made me recite some prayers after him (actual prayers) to God that I’d forgive if he mentioned the name of the woman while he performed an actual trick on me which I was made to understand it was a miracle. The trick was my saliva appeared at the back of my hand while he made me put it on my palm. Sounds funny? He actually did it, it left me stunned.

He also made me rub the same saliva all over my palm and on my forehead.

Amidst all these, Mr. A seemed to be more interested in me as he always talked about the vision he had about me. “Maybe I’m just the most blessed” - I couldn’t help but had this thinking.

All these experiences took quite some time, because x, y guys and I took turns in his ministration.

At a point, he switched topic and started telling us about the number 666 and how the devil has come to destroy the world. He advised us to change any of our personal stuffs that have to do with number 6, be it our phone PW, debit card PW or anything. He made us wrote down our passwords including debit cards on a sheet of paper.

It was time to reveal the mystery woman to me who has been marking down my footprints, my heart beat skipped in dismay and outright anger filled my head.

We had to take turns in hearing the biggest revelation of our lives because we all had unknown evil persons working their a$se$ out day and night just to make sure we don’t attain any successful endeavor.

Mr. A told the x guy to move ahead of us while counting till the 7th electric pole at the right, he also asked him to drop everything behind not to cause himself any distraction and while he moves he shouldn’t look left, right or back. Lastly, he should pick sand from the 7th pole and wait for us there. The x nigga GAVE ME his phone, wallet and that piece of paper where he had written his passwords and took off without hesitation.

In the meantime, while x guy has gone, Mr. A told us about one Agnes and Mr. James and how Mr. James blinded x guy’s father, still the x guy still takes care of Mr. James children living with him. Mr. A told us to first ask the x guy if he recognizes any of them in his family.

As we approached x guy who by the already completed the mini-quest, Mr. A excused himself as we asked the x guy if he knows any of the names we were told to ask him. x guy confirmed all true and said Mr. James is his uncle while Agnes is his inlaw. He even went ahead and told us about Mr. James children that stay with him. we went ahead telling him how Mr. James blinded his father, this grown nigga almost burst out in tears in our presence, we consoled him.

Who really is this man? – I questioned myself in thought.

It got to my turn, I was given almost same instructions what differs was, I was asked to count up to the 11th pole. That’s was quite a sum sha for a nigga who hasn’t eaten. I gave y guy my stuffs to hold for me, Yeh everything including a face cap I was putting on – Just how I was advised by Mr. A to avoid any form of distractions.

I took off immediately like some space rocket was shoved in my as$. I jogged like I never did before and when I reached the 11th pole there was a mini bar just behind and people where cooling off the sunny afternoon with their chilled green bottle. It occurred to me how to pick up sands there without those people thinking I’m nut. I went to the pole picked the sand without giving a crap what they might think about me.

Moment of Truth

I was breathing like a 120-year-old man who was forced to run a 100-meter race while looking down the road to see if they’re catching up with me. I saw no trace of the 3 of them. Took the pain went back and forth from where I was asked to start counting the poles, baba! They've all disappeared.

I managed to use strangers phone to call my line claiming it fell out of me, it rang for a moment with no answer. It was later switched off
At that point their cunny little actions started adding up and I began to see the bigger picture. Our debit card’s password we wrote down, my two debit cards, my phone, my wallet I left behind. It all made sense. It all seemed I was in a hypnotic state with no way out.

The damage was brutal. I was totally crippled. Who would expect less?

All these happened to me in the blink of an eye, while I was thinking it to be one of the most significant moment of life, Lol it was truly the worst mehn.

Quick hint: always try not to put all your valuables in your wallet or bag, while they’re easy to access, they’re easier to get stolen or lost.

Spoiler Alert!

Obviously the bringing in of x and y guys into the picture was a planned work. That’s how they operate in groups. Just so you won’t see yourself doing weird things alone.

These scallywags usually aim at weekends, when most public offices are closed. just so to carry out their diabolic acts seamlessly. if it was on a working day I would’ve reported to the bank and get my account blocked ASAP.

There bought my attention right at the beginning by saying facts about me, they won’t ask you to follow them but you would most eventually out of curiosity and to get more insight.

They mostly aim at people coming out of an atm. Because of course you can’t just go an atm to stare at the machines. You just accessed your bank account that’s makes you a potential client.

The way he spoke in a calm tone, with confidence and authority, will make you to be able to confined in them. All these are just to buy your trust so when they ask you to do certain stuff you most likely won’t hesitate.

They’ll most likely perform a trick on you just as they did to me with my saliva. They do this just to make you see them as a somewhat anointed or superior person.

Be extremely careful when you talk to strangers in general.

Lastly, if any stranger asks you to count – READ MY LIPS – E-L-E-C-T-R-I-C P-O-L-E… Baba!! Run for your life oo, or better still scream so loud to draw attention and make the person explain himself. There’s no doubt he’s a scammer.
What isn’t clear to me was whether I was jazzed or not. If I wasn’t, what describes the unorthodox act of rubbing my saliva all over my hands and forehead?

I hope you read, learn and share my experience, you might just be saving someone’s fortune.

Stay blessed!

Take this opinion to the bank.

There are two possibilities of what's going on her mind.

1. She got tired of you (sorry), maybe found someone more interesting and decided to use her faith to reset from you before she moves on.

2. She lost herself and her faith while engaging on immoral relations with you, hence her innermost desire to connect back (I wish this is the issue and not the later).

In both cases, there is little or nothing you can do. Infact pestering her or trying to let her see reason will worsen the whole thing, make her hold you at lesser regard or even dispise you.

My Advice: No matter how hard it's, stay completely away from her, as long as it takes, both cases requires it.

When you do that, it will give her time and space to know what she actually wants and HOW.

Take your time off, life or love is not about sex, don't rush into another relationship, it's a total waste time at this stage.

I'm sure the problem is the latter. I honestly respect her wish and desire but don't you think it's selfish and a wicked act? I mean she just left me dating myself.

Its not just the sex. The communication too is threatened.
Ave been in this exact same shii.. Its hard to breathe when the one u love so much holds on to a excuse(even tho realististic)
For u guys not to be in-sync lyk u both used to.
Its hard seeing a beautiful relationship fade away.

Op advice, let her be, find a way to withdraw from her. Asin stay as long as u can without being the one to call her.
And even when she does, be as plain and unsweet as u can be.
She will either fight to get ur attention back or let u go. Either ways, u would be fine.

Thanks alot for this. I'll sure heed your advice.

Thanks alot!
But your first paragraph needs a clarification that the sex experience was a mutual agreement and out of curiosity.

I Need Help! I'm Emotionally Traumatized.

Hi guys!

It's quite a long read so I've tried make it as concise as possible..

I bet you'll enjoy every piece as you thumb through.

We've known each other for some time before i asked her out. She gave a "Yes" sometime on August 2014, which has practically made the relationship 4 years old.

At the earlier stage, we had great feelings towards each other, we where literally submerged in love, did stupid and childish things together. Y'al know what love turns one into nah.

We where practicing a distance relationship. Same city, although just a 45min road trip kept us apart ~ we never denied visiting each other as we often did. thanks to 2go and what'sapp.

Time past, amidst the minor quarrels we had a greater reason to remain put, we grew stronger in love ~ i bet we had the best teenaged age. Got to a point we believed we where both destined for each other i was even prepared to tie the knot if only nature treated my pocket right.

All the while, we never had any bed intimacy only kisses and bla bla... Not until sometime 2017 when i went in. Arrghh! Very awkward i must say, just try to imagine where 2 novices are trying to make something of it. All through the session i was just looking for my way in.

The subsequent attempts after taking several xx video tutorials was fairly good NOT GREAT because she had a very bad sex beginning; a rape victim to be precise and that experience corrupted alot in her sex life. You don't want me to go into details, I hate to too.

Note: She is a very brilliant girl who got great personality, more reason i loved her wholeheartedly. The not-too-great sex paragraphs isn't made to sabotage her memory but because it's a cornerstone of my ordeal with her.

Heads up guys! She started having issues with the sex experience thing. Not because it wasn't SO GREAT but because it makes her backslide from her faith. Ohh didn't i mention? She's from a very strong Christian home.

I guess the devil took its chances on us, never wondered why it took so long before her realization. Now she's trying to be that born again kind of person again. Guys! I'm sure you know what that means.

The privileges i used to enjoy as a boyfriend where all ripped away not even a kiss or bla bla to manage almost drove me into maturating. Not just that, this is also garnished with some funny acts, not having my time et all. On my end it seems she utterly turned her back against me.

The whole quarrels erupted and all made me look myself like a devil trying to deviate God's child. I on the other end I'm just a lover boy trying to fight back for his feelings.

Things deteriorated, we hardly talk and even if we do wouldn't last more than a minute, all the while i was just drowning in sadness and heartbreak.

I still remember when we broke up our sexual relationship and remained good casual friends. My mind chose to cut any connections with her but my heart said otherwise. I couldn't cut it down, the imaginations of never seeing her again dreaded me even.

Bluntly speaking. I'm very emotionally sensitive with dealings with her. My happiness depends hugely on her, hence, any unfair act she gives set my heart ablaze. that's exaggerated though, but it's just as bad as that. Every now and then I'm always emotionally traumatized and this has bad effects on me.

My Regrets?
I wouldn't blame myself much because i was inexperienced and naive when our feelings was blossoming, I let loose my 100% heart commitment and now the consequences is just as fatal.

If i had known and took precautions earlier I'd have moved on with my life by now. But unfortunately, the reverse is just the case here.

Back to the present.
I've discovered that even the casual friendship hurts me. I mean Yes! No sex, no kisses i get it! I don't just get a dedication from her, no special moments everything is just as boring AF and this disgusts me.

This is where your I need advise.
Respective of the fact I'm still emotionally attached to her, I've accepted my faith of letting her go the issue now is doing this practically. It's just too difficult for me to handle.

Beside this, i feel we might later need each others help one way or another as we're both distant learners in same institution.

The feeling of not seeing her ever again dreads me alot whilst i doubt I'm capable of moving on if i don't cut her completely of my life.

Sometimes I feel the cause of this crazy feelings is because she deflower me. I don't just know why it's this much.

Note.It might sound to you that she stopped loving me or never had feelings for me. But the fact is she's too very in love with me all along even till now. Her faith is just strong and nothing can supersede it.

Insults are welcome. But first understand its usefulness her before you waste that effort.

What do you think i should do guys?

Politics / Irony Of Life In Nigeria by geek4k(m): 9:22pm On Sep 23, 2018
Irony of Life in Nigeria

Rich man marries, and have 4 children.

Poor man marries, and start mass production of children that he can't afford to train because the only thing that gives poor man joy is the body of his wife.

The country has beaten him to the level that sex is his only idea of enjoyment.

Politicians steal your money, sleep with your wife and girlfriends and sister, make sure you don't go to school, even when you struggle to, he makes sure you don't finish on time let alone getting a job.

He sends his children to the best schools abroad so they will take over from him when he is done playing with your future.

He initiates a poverty alleviation program, videos himself cutting tapes during the mounting of an electric pole. He gives you #4,000, bags of rice at rallies, and arms to fight his opponents.

He paints the roads and puts Street lights when there are no light in your home. You hail him!!!

He spends millions on billboards of his fake projects, hires the best PR experts to keep you drooling with hunger and uninformed and keep on doing damages to your common sense.

You defend him.

Second tenure, no jobs, no food, the #4,000 has finished and the bag of rice wasting in the pit of your toilet.

He must recover the billions he spent buying your votes.

For, he is not qualified to lead but you qualified him.

You start making use of the guns he bought for you.

You kill the poor like yourself who is suffering the effects of the #4,000 and bag of rice that you took.

You try to Kidnap his friends, their police orderlies fire back at you.

His friends tell him that there is insecurity in town and it will affect their mobilization for him for second term.

He shouts ahhhh, second tenure is like the second round of sex that puts one to sleep after, except, perhaps, he works for vivid entertainment or one of those Hollywood porn industries.

He complains of lack of security to the commissioner of police and General Officer Commanding, Air Officer commanding or the Flag Officer Commanding.

He spends millions hosting them.

They tell him what to do.

By now, you have become a threat.

He buys even a bigger gun for the police and the military plus operational vehicles.

He pays for radio and TV jingles to warn you.

You rob, you die.

You protest, you die.

You stay at home, you die of starvation.

Then, you get recommended to a church and since you can't pay tithes, pastor turns you into an errand boy.

He sends you to buy biscuits for his children, wash pants for his wife and clean his cars.

You sweep the church for free while awaiting your heavenly reward while the pastor fly private jets and drive flashy sedans.

You are happy that your pastor is rich and argue for him in midst of your friends.

He runs to the UK at the slightest symptoms of headache but prays for you when you are sick and tells you to bring your sick mother to church for prayers instead of taking her to hospitals to waste money.

She dies and he tells you that it was God's will while his mother has been in the UK for months receiving the best treatment that tithes can buy.

He buys a new land for a new church branch, you help to carry blocks and turn concrete, then collect blessings as reward.

You are happy to be working for the salvation of your soul, heaven will pay.

The pastor lives his heaven on earth.

The new church building is completed on your sweat.

He invites the president, governor, senator, house of representative member and every other person who made sure that you are poor by design.

The whole area is policed with guns and armored cars.

You are comfortably seated at the back while straining your neck to see who and who came.

The president and governor and senator plus their contractor friends donate hundreds of millions for the new church while you cheer from the back.

The food they shared didn't get to you but you are happy the president and governor and senator came to your church.

You even brag to others of how your pastor is well connected.

You get home, hunger Knocks angrily on the belly door, your neighbor bails you out while you wait for heaven to pay.

10 years on the jobless job, pastor's children have been sent abroad for studies.

Age is no longer on your side, pastor hooks you up with another aunty that sweeps the church for free with no education just like you and Weds you both on a Friday evening church service and you are happy.

Your children starts the cycle all over again.

What is the difference between an Ordinary Thief (OT) & a Political Thief (PT)?

1) The Ordinary Thief steals your money, bag, watch, gold chain etc.;

But the Political Thief steals your future, career, education, health & business!!!

2) The hilarious part is:

The Ordinary Thief will choose whom to rob; But you, yourself chose the Political Thief to rob you.

3) The most ironic one:

Police will chase and nab the Ordinary Thief; while the Police will look after and protect the Political Thief!!!

That’s the travesty cum irony of our current society!

And, we blindly say we are not blind!

It may not make sense to many but just read and be wise.

Its election period again........

Webmasters / Re: Foreign Host Or Local Host Please Which Is Better by geek4k(m): 12:19pm On Aug 14, 2018
Better stick with a foreign host if you really mean business. Most Nigerian owned web host don't meet up with good standard, the only advantage you'll get is the cheap rate. My candid advice!

Before you judge, y'al should first understand the cannotation behind the line "everybody is a criminal".

He clearly insinuated how the govt officials has literally tagged Nigerians criminals. He even backed up his claim with illustrations on the video with the SARS officials et all.

Politics / My Bad Experience During Voter's Card Registration In Abuja by geek4k(m): 12:56am On Aug 11, 2018
So after much procrastination regarding the registration of my voter's card, i finally gave it a try today and would authoratively say it was a total waste of time and effort!

Sacrificed a supposed sleep + work hours to get mine after getting the cold warning it'll end up before next weekend.

Woke up by 5am, hurriedly went to the registration center (PW Pri sch Kubwa, Abuja. Precisely) where the registration takes place.

It's a norm to first fill a pre-form to obtain unique numbers, hence, proceed to the next phase where the main questionnaire will be issued for data entry.

I managed to get the number "142" as It was already crowded when i stormed in by few mins past 5am.

With the thought of "making sure my stay there worthwhile" i waited patiently and kept note of all that was happening around not to be left out in the dark.

Hours past, the INEC officials finally walked in at some mins to 10am.. Damn!! "This people are not serious with their jobs" i thought to myself* then i remembered the phrase *This is Nigeria* which literally shut up my instances.

NB: some folks actually spent their night in the school just to get the least numbers. (the least your number, the better chance of getting registered)

Okay, could we get started already? Yes sure! They started calling out names and their respective numbers, the first set they called where up to 70.

Gosh! These guys where super slow! It was as if they were surfing with glo network on a mid evening. Worst! they're just two of them attending to several hundreds of us.

What's the time Bro? It's past 11am! Guess what? One of the INEC system got low on power and shut down, Oh didn't i mention? There's no electricity in the school and guess what? The INEC officials don't even have a generator!

Hol'up abit bro. As concerned Nigerians where involved, a man calming asked him if he could volunteer his generator and even fuel it for him to continue the work, "No" he said, he declined! And quietly walked out majestically with the excuse of going for prayers, spent more than 3 hours leaving the innocent Nigerians standing under the sun.

This act just portray incompetence, unprofessional, lousiness and laziness instilled in them. Got me wondering their training parameter; how they ended up public servants.

Truly! Nigerians are the problems of themselves. If we regard those little effort towards humanity it'll form a collection and then widespread, thus, the country will become soft and calm for everyone.

Anyways, after so much hassle and waiting consecutively, it was almost mid afternoon and most of the yet-to-be-registered folks got tired of waiting and started leaving angrily.

People where still much though and when the INEC supervisor came in she was acquainted on the situation of things. She welcomed the idea of generator that was volunteered.

To cut the story short, only a total of 120 persons was attended to. I left there exactly 4pm we where asked to come back tomorrow morning and start a new list all over again, yeh! That's the culture.

And yes! I've lost interest in getting mine.

This is my bad experience and i regret giving it a try in the first place because I lost not just the time and the effort we stood under the hot sun for hours, not even a shade built for this course and all classes were locked up.

Please note: this is just my personal experience and not a reason you shouldn't get you pvc. This is made solely for the relevant offices to make its service more efficient and flexible for Nigerians.

Education / 10 Grammar Mistakes You Should Avoid by geek4k(m): 12:41am On Jul 17, 2018
If you want to write clear, correct English, you certainly need to pay attention to the grammar rules. To help you with that, we collaborated with the folks from Grammarly and Write To Done to create a list with 30 common grammar mistakes you should avoid. Enjoy!

Mistake 1: Using whom as a subject

INCORRECT: Fire personnel radioed deputies to stop the driver, whom, according to reports, appeared to have been under the influence of intoxicants.
CORRECT : Fire personnel radioed deputies to stop the driver, who, according to reports, appeared to have been under the influence of intoxicants.

In this sentence, the pronoun is the subject of the verb appeared and therefore requires the subject form who. The object form of who is whom, which functions as the object of a verb or as the object of a preposition:

"That is the man whom I saw at the window. (object of the verb saw)

Did he say to whom he sent the letter? (object of the preposition to)"

The misuse of whom as a subject frequently occurs when a phrase intervenes between the pronoun and its subject. Be especially careful with such expressions as “according to so-and-so,” “in my opinion,” “one suspects,” etc. Less frequently, but more embarrassingly, whom is sometimes substituted for who when little or nothing stands between it and its verb, as in this sentence taken from a news account: “An off-duty fireman whom lives in the area provided immediate assistance.”

Mistake 2: Unnecessary would in a wish about the past

INCORRECT: Ten Things I Wish I Would Have Known When I Was Twenty
CORRECT : Ten Things I Wish I Had Known When I Was Twenty

The opportunity for knowing the ten things existed in the past, but exists no longer. The tense required, therefore, is the past perfect (had + past participle).

Mistake 3: Dangling modifier

INCORRECT: At the age of four, Sam’s family moved from Florida, Missouri, to Hannibal.
CORRECT : At the age of four, Sam moved with his family from Florida, Missouri, to Hannibal.

Modifiers should be positioned as closely as possible to the element they modify. The modifying phrase “At the age of four” modifies “Sam,” not “Sam’s family.”

Mistake 4: Subject-Verb disagreement with delayed subject

INCORRECT: There goes Sally and Greg on their way to the movies.
CORRECT : There go Sally and Greg on their way to the movies.

Subjects and verbs must agree in number. When a sentence begins with here or there, the true subject of the sentence follows the verb. “Sally and Greg” is a plural subject, so the verb go must also be plural: “Sally and Greg go.”

Mistake 5: Incorrect use of object pronouns

INCORRECT: Me and my brothers all have college degrees in business.
CORRECT : My brothers and I all have college degrees in business.

Several English pronouns retain different forms that indicate their function in a sentence. Me is an object form. In the example, it is incorrectly used as the subject of the verb have. Other object forms often used incorrectly are him, her, us, them, and whom.

Mistake 6: Incorrect use of subject pronouns

INCORRECT: The owner was most kind to my wife and I as we toured the grounds.
CORRECT : The owner was most kind to my wife and me as we toured the grounds.

I is a subject pronoun form. It is correctly used as the subject of a verb. Its object form is me, which is used as the object of a verb or, as in this example, the object of a preposition (to). Not all English pronouns retain an object form. The pronouns that do have subject and object forms are he/him, she/her, we/us, they/them, and who/whom.

Mistake 7: Inappropriate use of reflexive pronoun forms

INCORRECT: Jack and myself built the company from scratch.
CORRECT : Jack and I built the company from scratch.

A pronoun that ends in -self or -selves is called a reflexive pronoun. This type of pronoun refers to a noun or personal pronoun that occurs elsewhere in the sentence. For example, “He cut himself shaving.” In this example, himself refers to the same person as the one meant by He. A typical error is to use a reflexive pronoun in place of a personal pronoun:

INCORRECT: Thank you for everything you did for myself and my family.
CORRECT : Thank you for everything you did for me and my family.

Note: A more polite usage is to put me last in the phrase: Thank you for everything you did for my family and me.

Mistake 8: Incorrect use of did instead of had in certain “if clauses”

One use of the conjunction if is to introduce a clause that states an action that would have changed an outcome. For example, “If I hadn’t missed the train, I would be in London now.” A common error is to use did instead of had, as in this headline:

INCORRECT: [Celebrity] thinks he would be dead now if he didn’t give up alcohol and drugs
CORRECT : [Celebrity] thinks he would be dead now if he hadn’t given up alcohol and drugs

The person mentioned in the headline actually said (correctly), “I honestly don’t think I’d be alive if I hadn’t stopped drinking.” The tense required is the past perfect (had + past participle).

Mistake 9: Incorrect irregular verb forms

Most English verbs form the past and past participle by adding -ed to the base form. For example:
walk, walked, (has) walked
believe, believed, (has) believed
jump, jumped, (has) jumped

However, a few high-frequency verbs have irregular past forms, for example:
run, ran, (has) run
go, went, (has) gone
come, came, (has) come

Errors with irregular verb forms are becoming common in the media and in articles written by university graduates. Such errors are perhaps evidence that elementary school teachers no longer drill their students on the irregular verb forms. Here are typical errors:

INCORRECT: Mary loves to read, has ran for office and has an articulate way of telling it like it is.—Biographical note, KZNU.
CORRECT : Mary loves to read, has run for office and has an articulate way of telling it like it is.

INCORRECT: Deluna-Martinez is alleged to have went into one student’s account and dropped that student’s classes.—News item, KRCR
CORRECT : Deluna-Martinez is alleged to have gone into one student’s account and dropped that student’s classes.

INCORRECT: Deep Impact could have just so happened to hit one of these cometesimals, while the gas seen before impact might have came from a different region on the comet with different chemistry.—Scientific article, NASA site.
CORRECT : Deep Impact could have just so happened to hit one of these cometesimals, while the gas seen before impact might have come from a different region on the comet with different chemistry.

Note: A cometesimal is a “mini-comet.”

Mistake 10: Omitting that when it is needed after say

When there is no intervening conjunction, that may be omitted after the verb say:

"The witness said she overheard the defendant threaten to burn the man’s house down.

However, if a conjunction such as after, although, because, before, in addition to, until, or while intervenes between the verb say and its object, that is needed to avoid ambiguity:

INCORRECT: Santana said after he stopped recording, he watched for a few more minutes but never saw anyone perform CPR.
CORRECT : Santana said that after he stopped recording, he watched for a few more minutes but never saw anyone perform CPR.
