What would make a solar power installation a bitter experience is same with what would make you regret buying a car.

1. Cheap substandard parts
2. Inadequate power.

If you use a 1kw equipment. Do you use a 1kW generator? That would be foolishness or being short-sighted. In fact it would be advisable to use 1.5kw generator or even a 2kw generator especially if it is to run for long durations.

In simple terms. Can you use a toyota camry to carry 8 cows? The answer is yes. Remove the roof and squeeze the cows in. The car will move but will it last carrying such load everyday?

Read between the lines. Some people can be really funny.

In all what does this thread prove?

What lesson will you leave with.

Let us do the right thing. In life nothing hidden can't be brought to the open.

Nobody called you a "m0r0n". You said you were not. I have no clue what the devil has to do with this conversation. You are not as informed as you claim.

"Inrush current, input surge current or switch-on surge is the maximum, instantaneous input current drawn by an electrical device when first turned on. Alternating current electric motors and transformers may draw several times their normal full-load current when first energized, for a few cycles of the input waveform" Wikipedia This information is a mouse click away. Your AC and your fridge and freezer have motors in them. People withe generators notice the change in engine sound when these devices kick in. That is the surge. Ignore it at your peril.

Your quip about Aba made is rather unfortunate considering that you have not manufactured anything. You might be good at book knowledge, but that is no substitute for real life experience. The picture is of a 1.5 kw system that would shut down (overload) when a fridge was turned on. If the fridge was on when it came on it carried it. It had no surge ability. And it was a mid sized fridge. The fridge consumes about 220 / 230 watts. We installed them and quickly replaced them with units that could surge. Hence a 2 kw low frequency inverter can surge up to 6 kw.
Leave the practical knowledge to people who actually do this for a living. My company has installed 23 clients in Ghana and Nigeria, since June of last year. How many have you installed?
Don't you see his aim? I rest my case with knowledgeable people. What started the whole "education"? Cos I put the power consumption of a 1hp AC at 1200W information which is readily available even online on thermocool and Lg's web sites. An air conditioner running at 5A, 220V + energy loses from the inverter working (sure he does not know that for every load you put on an inverter, the inverter has about 5% energy loss that goes with it, this is another topic for another day). I repeat, only an ignoramus will think the guy is making sense. So he expects me to install a 1kw inverter for someone using a 1hp AC so the person can come here on nairaland with pictures of his fried Inverter. He has no intention to educate anyone. Just here to paint us all black.

By the way, you may say we are all learning, but I pick those I learn from carefully.

Been following this thread. THERE IS NO SINGLE professional that won't have issues with their client I mean NONE. Toyota is a well established motor company they are responsible for deaths of thousands by the errors in the design of some of their vehicles which lead to the recall of many of their vehicles in the past. How much more we? All the professional builders here have stories to tell. There will be misunderstandings, there will be delays, there will be loses. I wish Egosa just apologized from the beginning and just bear his loses.
I personally don't like what this issue has degenerated to. I am sure many are also saddened and disappointed that this is not getting resolved but getting worse. Why the curses? Why the talk of drunkenness and other issues that shld be left private. This is not good at all.
Please Dr oyewole, you are in the best position to resolve this. From all I have read, you have worked with many builders in the past, you can resolve this.

Hsl, your work is very good, you are good at what you do. Let us only see your professionalism. I think it is best you stay on the sideline in this issue and only play background roles in resolving this (and that shld even be minimal). Least people start seeing you from another perspective. Don't get dragged into this mud with eghosa.

speedy recovery.

Thank you @geesampower.
Good management and resposible use could make a huge difference in the cost of solar energy. The analysis I gave is based on 24hours use of all the appliances you mentioned. But I don't think you shld need anything more than the Freezer left on all the time and freezers don't even run 24/7 they have thermostats. Then appliances such ac the ac shld not be used more than 1 or 2 at a time, other electronics and appliances would all fall in place to taking their share of energy in the day and then you will save a lot of energy and a lot of money, I mean an amazing lot of money. So planning your energy use is the wise thing to do. With your initial demand, the solar energy company won't want to give you an installation that would disappoint you when you want to use everything at once and hence having a lot of panels and batteries that would cost you a lot of money. As I said in my original post, the breakdown is always key. Know what you are buying and why, know your options (alternatives you have) and choose wisely. All the best sir

Oga explaining common physics to u is a waste of time. U are just here to prove u 'sabi'. Of which what u are saying is totally flawed, how can anyone say it is wrong to calculate load with Watts. This is incredible.

Science/TechnologyRe: Beware!!! 5 Reasons You May Regret Spending On Solar Power!!! by geesampower(op):
jpphilips:
please it is not 750watts but 950w.

I guess you have not tried it before that is why you could not see the reason why calculating load in watts is wrong.

Let me answer it for you, a 950w Airconditioner connected to a 1000watts stabilizer will fry it instantly even though the rated wattage seems to be "ok", the starting current can be annuled by running the AC first through a switch mechanism that will regulate in micro seconds transferring the load to the 1000w stabilizer after a while, it will still fry it so the starting current theory holds no water in this case.

conversely, A 1000w refridgerator will run perfectly on a 1000w stabilizer the reason is simple,
A 1000w stabilizer is rated 2.6A while A 1000w refridgerator is rated 1A, you can see clearly that even if the fridge decides to double its starting current, the 1000w stabilizer still have a current clearance of 0.6A. That way no shaking!!.

Let us go and apply the same theory on the 950w Airconditioner.
The 950w Airconditioner has a strating current of 5.2A and a running current of 4.6A against the 1000w stabilizer of 2.6A.
you can see clearly that starting current or not, there is no way the stabilizer will stand a chance.

Nigerian technicians make that mistake a lot that is why there are a lot of homes that are powered with oversized generators and inverters.
It is still unclear whether the technicians do it to make the client pay more to their credit or the technicians are simply ignorant.

When someone says he has a 1hp Ac, dont calculate his load as 1,200w like you erroneously did rather his load is 4.6A -5.2A depending on the make and model.

This is not a subject of arguement because all the gadgets we mentioned are owned by people here, it wont be long before they tell you how wrong you are.
The actual load in an electrical device is the current rated in Amps and not the Power rated in watts or horsepower.
Learn that and move on!!

NB: IT IS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST TO ASK THE SELLER OF A GENERATOR OR INVERTER TO CALCULATE YOUR LOAD, CLIENTS BEWARE!!!
Lol
Won't indulge u. Thanks
While negating the operational voltage, you went ahead to work on current alone.
We could go on with this but I won't. You have not made any point that abolishes the use of watts (power) in load

And I am sure when balancing how much load a battery will power for a certain period, your logic would say we shld leave out voltage and focus on just the amps. Right? This is hilarious.
And when considering what a solar panel can power I shld ignore the voltage too right? So a 100w panel that delivers a current of 5.5A is enough to power a deep freezer. Right at least according to your argument, we shld forget about watts (power) and focus on current (amps). So 100w panel is all I need to invert to alternating current at 5.5amp that it generates and I would power 5 freezers using 1amp.

Hope you know this is online. Many will see this around the world. Those who have a foundation in physics or electrical engineering would be perplexed reading this

Since you agree, my next question goes thus;

When you connect a 750w Airconditioner to a 1000w voltage regulator (stabilizer) what happens?

when you connect the 1000w fridge to a 1000w voltage regulator, what happens?
Though your question is off topic. I will oblige you.

I will like to see a true 750w air-conditioner (1hp)

Back to your question. Connecting a 750w air conditioner won't work. The start up of a 750w air-conditioner will most likely be 2000w or more.

A 1kw regulator will never work, I Mean NEVER work with a 1kw rated refrigerator.

You either blow out the fuse, transformer or the overload circuit breaker kicks in to stop the load from damaging the stabilizer.

jpphilips:
Do you agree that some 1hp airconditioners are rated 950watts??
And some refridgerators are rated 1000w?
do you agree with any of the above?
That is very possible. It's possible in future for 1hp airconditions consume as low as 100watts, no controversy about variation in the wattage. There are 1hp pumps that consume 750w and some consuming as high as 1000watts. The technology is what makes the difference. Example. A brushed DC motor (BDC) and a Brushless DC motor (BLDC) can both be rated 1hp in what ever application were they function, and though they are both 1hp, the BLDC motor will consume at least 20% less energy than the BDC motor. So saying a 1hp Ac can also consume as low as 950watts is not out of place, it only shows there is a more efficient technology in use in that particular Ac. So that does not in anyway say we shldnt use Watts to calculate energy need. Or what is your point sir? Hope I am not missing anything? Is the watts quoted the controversy or the use of watts in calculation?

Visit the website of LG, samsung and you will discover most of their 1hp Air-conditioners are rated 1200w

Why do you calculate the load of appliances in watts? example:
You said a 1hp airconditioner is about 1,200w, why do you calculate it that way?
The load or power rating of any electrical device is the product of the voltage and current the device/appliance/machine/electronic uses. You can't independently use the voltage or current requirement of such to determine what it takes to run it.

That is why watts is used by electrical engineers to rate the power requirement in electrical devices.

You are welcome sir.
The number of panels depends on how quickly you want the battery charged and if it is used in the day time. If you use it in the day time you have to factor that in. Typically if it is just to get your batteries charged, 2 panels will more than get the job done.

some Installers do, some also dont , but another factor that limiting installers exploring this is the unavailability of ideal installation space,

Lets say for Example-- a client wants a system on the roof, he lives in a block of 2 flats and the right spot has a tall tree casting a shade and the tree is on the other compound or even a taller building, all you can do is make do with the other way using a pro. solar mount to lift the panels to get as much as possible.
Good input there. Orientation is key to maximizing your harvest from the sun. If we shld really go into this no fixed system is as effiecient as a tracking system, but at what cost?

Please, in as much as I know you mean no harm, change the notion that the knowledge of yourself or chris81964 is greater than mine in this regard.

I don't doubt the fact that PWMs would work, in fact many people use them, all I'm saying is that the best choice remains MPPT in terms flexibility, maximum power extraction, future expansion, driving of low voltage applications from higher voltage applications,DC to DC conversion e.t.c

I also stated that MPPTs are quite expensive but solar solutions is not just about adding more panels, it is more than that.

Most solar panel installations I have seen do not also take orientation to sun's ray into cognizance. Solar panel performance can also be optimized based on orientation to the sun's ray.
