The Commissioner for Finance, Osun state, Bola Oyebamiji, has refused to reveal the debt profile in the state, adding that anyone could google it for clarity. He said this during an interview with Channels' Sunrise Daily on Friday while addressing the topic: "The Minimum Wage Conundrum". The commissioner when asked to clarify the assertion by the former Governor, Ogbeni Aregbesola that the debt profile of the state is about N300billion and would be cleared by the end of 209, described it as "untrue" and "fictitious". "Well... that's not true, the debt profile of Osun is not N300billion, but I can assure that the debt profile, which is attached to some specific projects such as infrastructural development, and we are one of the credible state; because what make you credible is when a state is servicing its debt and is at the point of getting out of it very soon. "I can't actually tell you the figure of our debt profile as it stands now. Just as I told you, the figure is minimal. Don't worry, you can actually google it using the website, anybody can see it from there." http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/osun-debt-profile-i-don-t-know-goggle-it-says-commissioner-for

Leah Sharibu just like any other children in Nigeria has every right to better life, and must also be accorded fair treatment irrespective of her background, religious or social economic status. The essence of democracy itself is to guarantee everyone's right of access to freedom of movement, which is enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria as amended. But in the case of Sharibu; the story is different as her freedom has long been restricted by the so-called Islamic sect, Boko Haram. It's 676 days and still counting since Leah Sharibu and over 100 female students of the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi in Yobe State were kidnapped by the Boko Haram insurgents in 2018. The insurgents released the girls except for Leah, who is still held to date. In a statement released on Sunday, 22nd December 2019, and signed by its Chairman, Mr Ejoga Inalegwu, the Christian elders on the platform of the Northern Elders Christian Forum, urged Buhari to give them Leah Sharibu as “our gift for Christmas.” Inalegwu said, “We plead with the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to give the Christian community of this great nation, the Christmas gift by ensuring the release of our dear child, Leah Sharibu, from the brutal custody of the Boko Haram. “We believe the government has the wherewithal and competency to effect her release. “The message of Christmas is a message of hope for a people who had lost every hope; it is good news to revive the hearts of those in despair. It is the good news of deliverance.” This came as the stay in captivity of Leah Sharibu for over two years in the hands of the Boko Haram terror group has continued to draw local and international attention, with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, IFES, Regional Secretary for English and Portugese-speaking Africa and founder/convener, Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, Rev. Gideon Para-Mallam, calling on the Nigerian government to ensure that the teenager does not spend the new year in the den of the terror group. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/676-days-in-captivity-what-s-leah-sharibu-s-fate

Christmas is here again and you got to prepare yourself for the yuletide if you really care to enjoy every bit of it. Here are the eight ( security tips to keep you safe this Christmas:1. Prepare your home for optimum safety while you’re away Fact has it that during festive season, homes become more vulnerable to burglars. When leaving the house unattended, make sure all the windows and doors are locked. Pay particular attention to doors and windows at the rear of the house. And if you have a shed or garage, do not forget to lock them even if your house is fenced. 2. Turn off all your electrical appliances before travelling This is another very important one to remember, before you travel make sure you turn off ALL your electrical appliances, from the smallest to the bigger ones. (Even that socket without your phone charger, turn it off). Also remember your gas cylinder should be off and kept somewhere safe. 3. Keep your valuables out of sight If you enjoy the outdoors very often then it’s most likely that you have set up chairs and tables in your compound. Other things might include your gym instruments, buckets, generator, ladder, foot mats, waste bin etc. Two things are involved; as no one is in control of the weather its safer if you pack everything inside the house before you take your trip so when you return they still work perfectly and secondly, people are attracted by what they see. You don’t want to give the holiday burglars a reason to enter. 4. Illuminate your surroundings Just before you make any trip be sure to check that your security lights are perfectly working, some people even install brand new ones just to be extra careful. Nothing attracts unwanted guests like a house without proper security lights. 5. Have your car inspected and/or serviced before you travel, and keep an emergency kit in it. One of the most common issues that travelers experience during the holidays is car trouble. Being stuck on the side of the road in cold weather is the last thing you want to do on your vacation, but it can also be dangerous, such as if you happen to blow a tire while driving on a highway at high speeds. To help deter some of these incidents, bring your car in for an inspection and any necessary maintenance, particularly on your tires, which need to be road-worthy and properly inflated for the long drive. 6. Know how to drive safely on bad roads You should study up to ensure you know how to maneuver your vehicle on dilapidated roads, which could potentially be dangerous. Tips include not driving until you're sure of the condition of the road you're going to ply through, allowing yourself extra time to get to your destination to prevent rushing on the road, decreasing your speed, and leaving yourself plenty of room to stop. 7. Carry a cell phone and charger You never know when you might experience car troubles or where you might be when that happens, so having a mobile phone is crucial for utmost safety. Having a cell phone means having the ability to call for help with your car or for a taxi or other type of ride to get you to a warm location. Along with your cell phone, you also need to carry a phone charger to be able to keep the battery topped up. 8. Safety comes first Ensure while observing the Christmas holidays you raise alarm in case of any emergency like: fire outbreak, accident, building collapse etc. This would help the necessary authorities to know what preventive measures to take so as to tackle the situation at the appropriate time, and in turn, assure you of your maximum safety. For any traces of theft or robbery, please report to the nearest police station around you. Do have a blissful Yuletide. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/eight-security-tips-to-keep-you-safe-this-christmas

US President Donald Trump was impeached for abuse of power in a historic vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, setting up a trial in the Senate on removing him from office, Vanguard reports. By a 230 to 197 vote in the Democratic-controlled House, the 45th US president becomes just the third occupant of the White House in American history to be impeached. That decision lies in the hands of the US Senate, the other half of the US Congress, which will consider the issue during a blockbuster trial in January. Unlike in the House of Representatives, where a simple majority vote was enough to pass impeachment, two thirds of senators will need to vote to remove Mr Trump for it to happen. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/what-does-trump-s-impeachment-mean-and-what-happens-next

Many students borrowed N650 for the online registration, a prerequisite for assessing the yearly Kogi State Scholarship Scheme, known as bursary. But months after, no student has received the cash. The aggrieved students are appealing to the government to fulfil its promise or return their ‘processing fee’. AROGBONLO ISRAEL report WHEN it was announced, many students received the news with joy. But, one year after, they are yet to be paid. Now they are lamenting the non-payment of their 2018-2019 bursary and scholarship by the Kogi State government. The aggrieved students, under the aegis of the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), are spoiling for a showdown, should the government fail to fulfil its own part of the deal before the state election scheduled for next month holds. The beginning CAMPUSLIFE gathered that NAKOSS was created in 2004 as a pressure group to promote the welfare of students in tertiary institutions. The late Governor Prince Abubakar Audu did not pay the bursary, but awarded scholarships to certain categories of students. This led to students’agitation for improved members’ welfare. Audu’s successor Alhaji Idris Ibrahim continued with the scheme, with students receiving N3,500 yearly. Nevertheless, aside that students only enjoyed the bursary once under Ibrahim. CAMPUSLIFE learnt the scheme was fraught with irregularities as most students that registered could not access their bursaries. Capt. Idris Ichala Wada (rtd), who took over from Ibrahim in 2011, added N500 to the bursary. Like Ibrahim, the method of payment was also ridled with irregularies. Two years ago, there were fresh agitations by the students on the matter. This made Governor Yahaya Bello to increase the payment by 300 per cent, a feat previous administrations were not able to achieve. In addition, Bello digitalised the payment system, which encouraged eligible students to register online as a precondition for the bursary. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/kogi-endless-wait-for-bursary-amid-protest

The Supreme Court on Wednesday delivered its first ruling against the People's Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Vanguard reports. Atiku and his party are before the apex court to challenge the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the February 23, 2019 poll. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, who leads the seven-man panel of the apex court, in the lead ruling consented to by other members, overruled Atiku and his party’s request that their seven interlocutory appeals should be heard after the main one must have been argued. The seven-man panel held that it would be unnecessary to hear the interlocutory appeals when a judgment on the main appeal marked SC.1211/2019 would cover the field. After the Apex court ruling that declared the All Progressive Congress candidate, Muhammadu Buhari as the legitimate winner of the 2019 Presidential poll, reactions have since been trailing on the social media over what the opposition party described as 'an infringement on the goodwill of Nigerians'. Vanguard gathered some of the reactions as follows: Judiciary hijacked by dictatorial cabal — Atiku Mr Abubakar, the main challenger to President Muhammadu Buhari at the election, said the top court has been hijacked by Mr Buhari’s dictatorial tendencies, even though he accepted its verdict. According to him, the ruling showed the Supreme Court had also been undermined and rendered ineffective as part of Mr Buhari’s alleged repressive tactics. While noting the media and the electoral commission were not spared by the president. “If we do not build a free Nigeria, we may end up destroying her, and God forbid that that should be the case,” he said. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/2019presidentialelection-reactions-trail-over-supreme-court-rulin

Ahead of the elections in Kogi and Bayelsa, Ex campuslife journalist, Arogbonlo Israel, has cautioned politicians to desist from any act of violence, saying that no Nigerian should kill or maim himself or herself because of the ambition of any power drunk politician. The journalist stated this in a press statement released to newsmen on Sunday while reacting to some suspicious traces of violence that may mar the polls in the two states mentioned. According to him, "The cost of leadership is service and should never be exchanged for violence. We cannot avoid to lose any Nigerian to violence sponsored by one heinous politician looking for blood to shed. Thus, election not worth blood of any Nigerian if you may ask me. "It pisses me of most times when youths voluntarily accept to be used by some power drunk politicians who more often than not would choose to safeguard the lives of their children than turning them to political thugs during elections. So, why must our youths accept to dine and wine with the devil without considering the repercussion of their actions?" "It is high time we changed the narrative and start getting things done the right way they ought to be and stop playing gambling with the futures of the leaders of tomorrow." Arogbonlo charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a violence-free election, adding that the safety of lives of the electorates should be mostly priortised if the agency must achieve optimal success in the coming elections in the two states respectively. http://community.vanguardngr.com/forum/topics/election-not-worth-blood-of-any-nigerian
