Findings have revealed vital statements ascribed to the newly appointed Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari on restructuring Nigeria, federalism, among others.

According to reports, Prof Gambari made this known at Babcock University, Ogun during a Public Affairs Forum held on the 18th of March 2019.

While giving his speech, the Prof spoke extensively on the theme: Federalism and the Future of Nigeria: The Challenge of Restructuring.

He further highlighted that a country’s foreign policy revolves around its national interests and an examination of Nigeria’s foreign policy reveals that her leaders function around four concentric circles, which include:

1. Nigeria's own advancement;

2. Nigeria's relations with the West African neighbours;

3. Nigeria's relations with Africa on issues of peace and sustainable development and;

4. Nigeria's relations with the rest of the world. He stated predominantly that restructuring Nigeria is a necessity.

Some solutions the academic proffered with reference to the theme during the Public Affairs Forum included:

1. Revisiting the resolutions of the 2014 Confab.

2. Political parties serving as sets of principles and guidelines, so as to guide the choices of the people;

3. Regular mechanisms for dialogues amongst leaders;

4. Federalism should be based on co-operation rather than confrontation and;

5. A social system that gives opportunities to people on the basis of their abilities rather than their wealth or social status (Meritocracy).

HealthCOVID-19: More Revelation As Reactions Trail Kogi Saga by Gemid94(op): 11:38am On May 14, 2020
Kogi State, popularly known as ‘The Confluence State’ has a reputation for controversy. In recent times, the state has been plagued by a series of crises, such as insecurity, political face-off, and ethnic sentiments, among others. It seems there is no end to the controversies. Last week, there was a directive by the Presidential Task Force Committee to visit the state amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has since been ravaging the country and the world at large.

Residents react

A resident from Lokoja, Abdullahi Jibril while speaking with our reporter called on transparency on the part of NCDC in terms of their level of engagement with the governor. “I join the numerous voices that have demanded transparency in the discharge of NCDC’s mandate in tackling the novel coronavirus.

“I sincerely believe that there is more to the shenanigans expressed by the Agency than the ordinary eyes can see. But for now, her activities are shrouded in secrecy. But for now, her activities (NCDC) are shrouded in secrecy,” he said.

Another resident from Ogugu area of the state, Onojah Johnson lamented over the poor facilities in the state while describing the ongoing saga between the state government and the NCDC officials as having a political undertone.

“It is not that there are not isolation centre, there are but the facilities in place are not up to standard, and that shows the level of commitment from the side of the government. “In respect of what transpire between the government and NCDC, I personally would want to believe that there is a political undertone to what we’re seeing.”

Medical practitioners react

A doctor who spoke with confidence explained the health implications associated with the ongoing tussle between the Kogi State Government and NCDC.

“It is not that “NCDC are corrupt and want to assign COVID-19 to Kogi by force”. Rather, it is all about protecting the lives of healthcare workers and their families. It is about protecting and keeping all citizens, including you, safe.

“You cannot say something is absent when you have not sought for it. And refusing to check for it is not faith but a dangerous kind of foolishness. Faith to me, recognizes the facts but states the truth of God’s word instead,” said the source.

PoliticsJUST IN: Tension In Gov Bello's Camp As S/court Affirms Use Of Forensic Analysis by Gemid94(op): 9:39am On May 13, 2020
There is palpable fear within the camp of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as Supreme Court affirmed the use of forensic analysis for the ongoing Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal, Vanguard can report.

The Supreme Court affirmed the earlier ruling Appeal Court which allowed Tribunal to use forensic analysis in its judgment.

The judgment which was delivered on the case of INEC vs Musa Wada marked: SC.205/2020 was determined by 5-man panel led by Justice of the Supreme Court headed by Hon. Justice Sylvester Nguta JSC, Tuesday.

The apex court dismissed the appeal of INEC and affirmed the decision of the Court of Appeal on the of forensic examinations of INEC documents.

The implication of this is that alleged electoral frauds claimed by the PDP candidate, Musa Wada, in the seven local government of the state will now be subjected to forensic analysis to determine the claims of the PDP candidate.

Leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has lashed out on those criticising Rivers’ State Governor Nyesom Wike for demolishing hotels of those who defied the governor’s order on containing Coronavirus.

In a statement released by IPOB Media and Publicity, Emma Powerful on Tuesday, Kanu described Wike's critics as hypocrites.

According to him, some of the critics didn’t speak when Kaduna State Governor, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai did even worse.

“When El-Rufai the midget was busy terrorising and pauperising thousands of Biafran businessmen by demolishing their hotels, bars, restaurants and homes in Abuja, some of the raging hypocritical voices of righteous indignation we are hearing today were never heard.

“They never uttered a word, nor made a sound because they were and still are afraid of the murderous tendencies of their masters who are still demolishing legitimate Igbo businesses in Abuja”, Kanu fumed.

He said that when in fact El-Rufai went on to become the governor of Kaduna State from where he openly admitted to paying terrorists that decimated the non-Fulani populations of Southern Kaduna, nobody reacted.

PoliticsJUST IN: 'Yahaya Bello Politicising COVID-19 In Kogi' by Gemid94(op): 11:41pm On May 10, 2020
A social crusader simply identified as Comrade Austin Okai has described the moves of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello in the fight against Coronavirus pandemic in the state as having political undertone.

Okai disclosed this in an interview with our reporter on Saturday while commenting on the attitude of the state governor towards COVID-19 cases in recent times in the state.

The youth activist lamented over the poor state of facilities in the state, adding that the people of the state should be more concerned with the pandemic and stop taking the officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as enemies.

"The pandemic (Coronavirus) has no stringer symptoms. It is not until somebody head remove or has his neck twisted back before you would know he has Coronavirus. At times, it comes with Malaria and other symptoms depending on your health issue."

He continued; "So, they (NCDC) came here as a result of the low sample of tests conducted by the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja. And even before now, there have been several complaints that states with no reported case have failed to send enough blood samples for test with no exemption to Kogi. Just imagine the state (Kogi) has been opened to travellers with no one to check them for sometime now.

For instance, the popular market Ganaja has been accommodating traders from Lagos, Kwara, Enugu among other epic centres with COVID-19 cases for the past weeks. So, the governor is trying to frustrate the NCDC from carrying out their duty. You can't declare a state Coronavirus free when enough tests have not been conducted."

"Today, 80% of the people believe that there is no COVID-19 in the state. Does Yahaya Bello have Isolation centre in Kogi State? Just that he's only joking while saying is going to quarantine the experts that came to help. Instead of the people to ask for the palliative he collected from Federal Government, they are busy celebrating as if our problem is NCDC. Our problem is the virus, not NCDC, and until we are sure of adequate testing capacities before we can celebrate in Kogi," he added.

HealthThug-of-word: Kogi Govt Replies NCDC Amid COVID-19 Tussle by Gemid94(op): 11:07pm On May 10, 2020
The Kogi State Government has reacted to the claim by the director-general of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu, that the state rejected the help offered by the agency to ascertain the COVID-19 situation in the state.

Recall Kogi and Cross River are the two states yet to confirm a single case of the disease in the country.

A delegation from the NCDC had earlier visited the state on Thursday night, 7th May 2020. However, the governor, Yahaya Bello asked the team to go on 14-day isolation or leave the state immediately. The team then returned to Abuja.

Speaking at the presidential task force briefing on Friday, the NCDC boss said they can only offer help when it is needed.

“We can only offer help where it is wanted. Yesterday, we offered that help but it wasn’t in a place where the help could be accepted. Unfortunately, that was what happened last night,” Ihekweazu said.

In reaction, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo told our reporter on Saturday that the agency failed to adhere to protocol while making reference to the scenario that occurred when NCDC officials last visited the state, adding that they refused to be quarantined for 14 days.

"It was abortive because NCDC wanted us to violate their rules which we were not ready to do. We follow rules.

"The disagreement wasn't between the State Government and the NCDC. We need to make this very clear. It was a disagreement between NCDC and NCDC.

"When some Chinese officials came into the country to give technical support to NCDC, they were quarantined and tested. That is the normal protocol. They were coming from China.

"So when NCDC Officials came, they were supposed to submit themselves for quarantine and tests. They refused to submit themselves for test. So they violated their own rules. They wanted to import COVID-19 to the State by force," Mr Fanwo said.

On testing capacity in the state, the Commissioner said; "We will only test those that exhibit clear symptoms of COVID-19. We wont roll out fake impressions and figures."

The Governor said that the focus on hotels was because one of the coronavirus cases in the state spread the virus from a hotel.

Wike who monitored the demolition of Prodest Hotel, Alode, Eleme said his action was in line with the Rivers State Government Executive Order 6, which banned the operation of hotels across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu Sends Message To Yoruba Leaders Over Osinbajo’s Whereabouts by Gemid94(op): 4:30pm On May 10, 2020
The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has asked South West (Yoruba) leaders to, without delay, demand the whereabouts of their son, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Questions have been raised over the whereabouts of the Vice President who has not made a public appearance since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

“A few weeks we started the campaign to uncover the truth about VP Osinbajo’s whereabouts,” Kanu said on Facebook on Sunday.

“Sadly till date the only response has been the usual evasive answer from the faceless PRESIDENCY’ that ‘he has been working from his office on Economic Sustainability Initiatives.”

“I encourage my Yoruba brethren to be courageous enough to demand ‘proof of life’ for their son.

“No wonder they call themselves USED TISSUE PAPER (UTP). A country without a president, no vice president, no Chief of Staff to the president yet they are awarding contracts in Aso Rock daily."

PoliticsUzor Kalu: EFCC Sets For Fresh, Immediate Retrial by Gemid94(op): 6:05am On May 09, 2020
All is not yet over for former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Kalu, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set for “a fresh and immediate retrial.”

Following the Supreme Court’s judgement, voiding Kalu’s 12-year jail term, on Friday, the EFCC has expressed their dissatisfaction and now ready to press more charges against the former governor.

In a statement signed by the Head, Media and Publicity of the anti-graft agency, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC described the Supreme Court judgement as “quite unfortunate.”

The statement titled: Orji Kalu: EFCC SET FOR FRESH, IMMEDIATE RE-TRIAL, reads: The attention of the Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to the judgment of the Supreme Court nullifying the trial of a former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and Jones Udeogu, a former Director of Finance and Account of Abia State Government and ordering their fresh trial at the lower court.

The apex court based its verdict on the grounds that Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Kalu and others had been elevated to the Court of Appeal before the judgment and returned to the lower court to deliver the judgment which it considered as illegal.

Foreign AffairsUS Made ‘Stupid Mistake’ Abandoning Nuclear Deal ―Iran President by Gemid94(op): 11:30am On May 06, 2020
Iran’s president said Wednesday the United States made a “stupid mistake” by abandoning a nuclear deal and warned of severe consequences if its allies agree to extend an arms embargo.

The United States is waging a campaign to extend the ban on selling conventional weapons to Iran, which is set to be progressively eased starting in October.

The ban is to be lifted in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which blessed the landmark international agreement that placed limits on Iran’s nuclear programme in 2015.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the accord — known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA — in 2018 and began reimposing sanctions on the Islamic republic.

“America made a very stupid mistake by abandoning this agreement,” his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, said at a televised cabinet meeting.

“The wise thing for the US is to return to the JCPOA… but those in charge today won’t ever reach such wisdom,” he added.

HealthWhy Kogi Has No Reported Case Of COVID-19 by Gemid94(op): 10:42pm On Apr 28, 2020
Kogi State Government, Tuesday has revealed reasons for having no record of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state following the recent allegation by the Director General of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu stating that states which are yet to record cases of COVID-19 are either negligent in testing and tracing, or actively hiding, the disease within their territories.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo while addressing the press in the State's capital, Lokoja rolled out reasons for the absence of the pandemic in the State.

He said; "Lest anyone accuse us of ineptitude or riding on sheer luck, we wish to point out that in addition to everything else, Kogi State has had an excellent history of managing epidemics in the past.

The excellent network we already had in place for managing Lassa Fever and other disease outbreaks long before COVID-19 appeared on the scene provided a framework upon which we founded our current structures for containing the virus."

HealthKogi Govt. Denies NCDC Statement Amid COVID-19 by Gemid94(op): 9:56pm On Apr 28, 2020
Kogi State Government, Tuesday has denied allegation by the Director General of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu stating that states which are yet to record cases of COVID-19 are either negligent in testing and tracing, or actively hiding, the disease within their territories.

This was disclosed, in a statement released to newsmen by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo at the state's capital, Lokoja.

The statement reads apart;

"The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to reports in sections of today's press credited to Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director General, National Centre for Disease Control (DG NCDC) insinuating that states which are yet to record cases of COVID-19 are either negligent in testing and tracing, or actively hiding, the disease within their territories.

"Since Kogi State is one of only 3 states in the country yet to record any case of Covid-19, and indeed the DG NCDC is quoted to have mentioned us by name, we find the said comments, along with the unfair attempt to name, defame and shame us incredibly distressing.

"Kogi State confesses that she is not aware the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria is a one-legged race to see which state can put as many cases as possible into the national incident basket, and even if such were to be the case, the current administration in Kogi State does not play such games with the lives and psychology of her people."

CrimeSocial Distancing: Why FG Must Apologise To Funke Akindele, Others by Gemid94(op): 11:31pm On Apr 20, 2020
It will be recalled popular Nollywood Actress Funke Akindele and her husband AbdulRasheed Bello, also known as JJC Skillz, were convicted for hosting a birthday party in their Amen Estate home during the coronavirus lockdown enforced, March 30 2020. The court sentenced the couple to 14-day community service after they pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of violation of social distancing order preferred against them by Lagos State government.

However, many Nigerians have since taken to their social media asking the government to tender an apology letter to Nollywood actress Funke Akindele and others who were convicted unfairly. owing to the fact that, the Federal Government allowed a crowd to attend the funeral of the former chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari (of blessed memory) who died of the Coronavirus recently.

The situation was worsened after a video emerged showing that one of the men who helped bury the Chief of Staff dumped his protective clothing in public. Amid calls for the man to be identified, isolated and prosecuted, the area was later decontaminated. The big question is, would the government admit its wrong and do the needful outrightly or otherwise?

CrimeCOVID-19 Vs Police: Which Is Deadlier? by Gemid94(op): 6:44pm On Apr 16, 2020
It is no gainsay that every nation must build a formidable internal security force to safeguard its citizens especially those who are vulnerable and endangered amidst insecurity of lives and properties. But it is vise-versa in the case of Nigeria where one of its security armed forces (Police) have been the talk of the town as a result of its unprofessionalism in terms of handling security challenges in recent time. Earlier this month, Nigeria's police force encouraged citizens to report officers who violate rules on conduct adding “the rights of Nigerians are not infringed upon under any pretext”

Nigeria is referred to as the 'Giant of Africa' for the role played in the unity and tranquility of African continent, the West African countries in particular. However, with the recent happenings in the Nigeria Police Force, it is becoming pathetic to see the pride of Africa gradually going into extinction because of the inordinate attitude displayed by some erring members of the force to the citizens who ought to have been protected in this critical time. What a sad episode!

It be recalled the first confirmed case of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 in Nigeria was announced on 27 February 2020, when an Italian citizen in Lagos tested positive for the virus. Today, Nigeria has recorded 407 new cases, 128 discharged, and 12 deaths at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari in his first broadcast dated 30th March 2020 ordered a two-week lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja, in an effort to stem the tide of Covid-19. On the 13th day of April 2020, the President extended the lockdown over concerns on the rapid rise of the pandemic in the country. This necessitated the emergence of the Nigeria Police Force among other security outfits to safeguard the citizens during this period amid security hitches.

Findings by the Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, 15 March 2020 claimed security operatives killed 18 civilians during enforcement of a total lockdown in major cities in the country over the novel Coronavirus. This has resulted to heated controversies between the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerians as the former is more concerned about the report.

The commission, founded under a special law to monitor human rights violations in Nigeria, said in a report it got 105 petitions from families of the deceased through their lawyers and carried out investigations.

"Security operatives have killed about 18 persons following the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations and lock down," the report said.

EducationCOVID-19: Journalist Recommends Education Programme For Students’ Development by Gemid94(op): 10:30pm On Apr 15, 2020
Lagos based journalist, Arogbonlo Israel has called on Federal Government to take into cognizance the mental development of Nigerian students amid the Coronavirus pandemic in the country. Mr Arogbonlo, in his words, recommended education programmes across the conventional media as viable tools to enlighten the students, especially during the lockdown, adding this would help to reawaken the memories of the students who have been at home for some weeks back. “It’s high time Federal Government put into consideration the mental development of students across the country, especially those in areas affected by the lockdown. We must remember that these students have been sitting at the comfort of their homes for a couple of weeks now with little or no academic activities to keep them busy," he said.
