ProblemChild1: A poultry farmer in the North West Province of South Africa says he is planning to put in a 1.5 million rand (40.5 million naira) claim against the electricity provider Eskom after power disruptions at his farm killed an estimated 40 000 to 50 000 of his flock.
Herman du Preez, owner of the Frangipani Boerdery in Lichtenburg, told News24 on Thursday that it was difficult to know the exact death toll, as chickens were still dying.
Problems began in mid-December when problems with a transformer prompted Eskom to connect the area to another line, he said, but there had been variations in the voltage that damaged equipment such as pumps and motors.
Problems came to a head on Monday night, when insufficient voltage resulted in the air conditioning at one of the farm's chicken houses to shut down, he said. The farm has about 550 000 chickens.
"I'm busy with my homework. I'm waiting for reports from my electrician," said Du Preez. Eskom technicians had visited the farm on Wednesday in order to turn up the voltage, said Du Preez, but he added that he was now concerned about a surge if Eskom ultimately restores the area's transformer.
"So that's the next disaster that's going to happen," he said.
The continuation of Stage 6 load shedding (planned powercuts) in 2023 has sparked fears that disruptions in the agricultural supply chain could push up already elevated food prices and even result in shortages. 🔚

IfnobeGod20: Where are they doing it? All refineries owned by government are moribund till date, aside Dangote that is building one in Lagos, which cannot carter for 20% of our daily consumption. Where they are taking the crude oil to, if their own refineries are moribund would they have the opportunity of taking the crude oil there. Common sense should have told them to fix theirs but no way. Even if they cannot fix the existing ones, they should at least encourage modular refineries and empower private individuals to do so under the control of government. This will go along way to soften this perennial problem of subsidy regime that is crippling our economy. The first phase of the PortHarcourt Refinery to produce 60,000 Barrels per day is ongoing, so is Warri Refinery. That PortHarcourt Refinery First Phase may likely begin production way before that of Dangote. Dangote Refinery from my calculations may come up last quarter of this year. |

IfnobeGod20: But why is the government refusing doing the right thing? What stops the government revamping the moribund refineries and even build new ones. With the new refineries and revamping the existing ones, the subsidy regime will fizzle out automatically but those benefiting from the subsidy regime doesn't want the right thing to be done. Until we fix the refineries and build the new one, we will continue to suffer unabated and the government will always transfer the burden to the citizens. Funnily, none of the presidential candidate is talking about building refineries or revamping the existing ones to work optimally. We have a bigger problem as a country because we like chasing shadows, instead of facing issues squarely and roundly. But why is the government refusing doing the right thing? What stops the government revamping the moribund refineries and even build new ones. I believe Government is doing that already. |

Obaaderemi2: First of all, establishing an industry is different from building factories.
When Morroco was going to start pulling itself out of poverty, the king and his cabinet focused on certain industries, real estate and textiles were among. Same goes for Bangladesh especially. Nigeria can do same. Not building factories but stimulating capacity in certain industries. The government can create a hub, invite major international players in such industries such as clothing and shoes mass production, and take stakes in such companies through investments arranged through commercial banks or through such sweetness as tax exemptions for a certain period of years. To put up basic facilities for such hubs would cost money but not as high as building a bridge we could ill afford, thereby digging ourselves into debts and still failing to create jobs or grow the economy. With time you'll see how well developed the economy and society would be when such industries take on a life of their own.
Even if you create an enabling environment in a place like Nigeria the private sector would still move slowly because of paucity of funds unless the government stimulate certain industries it has picked with funds.
Let me give you the example of South Korea. The chaebols which later became the big multinationals you see today were all tiny family businesses beforer the Korean war. With American aid and grants after the war the government invested in those companies. Some went into electronics, others into car manufacturing. Samsung was a playing card business until then I think. The government gave Hyundai money and pushed its owner into building ships which it had never done until then, today it's one of the biggest in that industry.
Or is it the Chinese phone and electronics companies we want to talk about? It is heavily government influenced. Why can't we do similar things in Africa?
I go to places like Osun state and I see shiny new roads and structures that would soon become descrepit with billions wasted while their people are hungry and jobless. Seyi Makinde spent #28bn naira providing street lights in Oyo State powered with diesel. One year after it's hardly functioning. Now imagine if he had spent#14bn creating a food processing and packaging hub in Oyo State. YNorth is a small shoemaking business in Ibadan. The guy's shoes and shirt rival what we import from Italy. Why not create a hub for such people and invest heavily in their businesses. Now the governor has started work on a 110km Ibadan Circular Road. And we keep complaining about lack of jobs. All the roads Aregberascal built in Osun, how have they stimulated growth of Osun?
Or should I give you the example of Volkswagen which is today Europe's biggest carmaker and how Hitler started it by deducting workers salaries? (Hitler madman)
We don't have the luxury of the American model to follow in Africa. America has a rich private investment culture that Africa and Asia lack. That's why China and Korea didn't follow such models at the initial stage. If Africa is going to rise the government has to be involved in industries, not just trying to create enabling environments and then sitting on their dicks waiting for investors to come. The government's business must be business. I agree the Government must be involved in the industry too and that is the socio-capitalist system or PPP (if you prefer). However, in this PPP you'll also agree that the private sector should dominate either at the onset or most importantly after the simulation of the Federal Government. Federal Government should however dominate in the areas of Road, Electricity, and stuff like that to make the environment conducive for investors. |

Their currency went from $1:12 to $1:28 Egyptian pounds. Dept repayment a struggle. Inflation Etc
Warnings of economic collapse have been issued by imf, worldbank Egypt has one of the biggest debt crises in Africa in my opinion. The only reason I think people are not paying much attention is that they have the Arab nations to fall back to eventually for sustenance. |

Obaaderemi2: Roads are important, I agree. But digging ourselves into so much debt to China to put up sgr services that are not adding much to the economy.
Lee Kwan Yew told the story of a factory he visited in China in the 70s before China became prosperous. The road to the factory was bad, but the factory was doing good production. When he asked why the government didn't build the road first, the manager told him they had two options: build a road or build a factory. They built the factory knowing fully well that the factory would generate employment, develop the local economy which in turn would be able to produce the Money to build the road. And that's what happened when he returned there years later. Chinese are very smart people and less corrupt than us.
Most of the infrastructure you see in Africa are just showoffs. They're not adding much to the economies. Nigeria at this point should focus more on food production and electricity supply than that sgr project or things like 2nd Niger Bridge. Lagos should be more concerned about clean water supply, cheap housing and the state of the environment than talking about spending billions of borrowed money on a 4th mainland bridge. And what's wrong with Lagos establishing a clothing industry to tap into the USA AGOA opportunity? This is something that can create employment and increase igr. I think Lagos is doing all of these together. It is the private sector mostly that establishes factories in my opinion not Government. Fourth Mainland Bridge would do a lot to reduce traffic in a city like Lagos which would improve the economy tremendously. |

Obaaderemi2: Africa is not doing well at all. North Africa is an exception of some sort because of their proximity to Europe. The Sahara desert that cut subsaharan Africa off from the developed world of the middle ages did Africa a lot of harm.
This year 2023 might even be tougher for Africa if we don't put great energy into planning and action concerning our economies. We are saddled with debt with little production, Kenya for example.
We spent massively on shiny infrastructure just to look good without paying attention to the economy. We forget that as important as infrastructure is, compared to the real economy infrastructure is just the window shop item while the economy is the real weapon behind the counter.
Education, environment and economic growth are three areas we need to seriously focus on if we want to dig Africa out of the whole it has put itself into. It depends on the type of infrastructure though. Certain kinds of infrastructure have direct correlation to the economy. In this order, these are the infrastructures that should be focussed on. Constant Electricity Broadband Connectivity Refineries/Gaspipelines Railways and Roads I have no problem with Government doing any of these for the economy (in that order only) but a country like Egypt for instance borrowed almost their existence to build a new city and now despite the fact that they have taken 5 Billion dollars from the IMF, it still doesn't help their situation. |

In all seriousness each African country has unique qualities and achievements they should be proud of.
On the flip side apart from the entertainment value and banter we should all be sober cus for the most part our countries aren't shiitt.
Nigeria giant of Africa but despite crude oil no refinery is working. No constant power. poverty rampant
Ghana economy in crisis borrowing from IMF for the upteenth time.
Kenya IMF issues as well. lack food security and poverty issues as well.
SA battling load shedding inequality and poverty not as rampant but still an issue.
And these 4 aforementioned countries are supposed to be the pillars of the continent.
Was reading somewhere that except for Libya all the North African countries provide the most consistent power supply in Africa men we have a long way to go. Exactly. Tanzania is even doing somewhat okay in terms of stability all round at the moment, compared to these four countries you mentioned above. |

Well to me, there is nothing wrong with taking as much loans as we want from the CBN as long as such loans can be accounted for. If such loans can be accounted for and they are channelled into areas that brings returns, then no problem.
We have more control over loans from the CBN than the other debts we take. The only possible challenge there would be inflation and devaluation of the naira as a result of excess printing of the naira, but this would be a much lesser issue if the CBN loans are channelled strategically to the Agric sector in such a way that the sector brings quick returns to the economy and the loans are been paid back by the sector over time at low interest rates. |
