Joseph was not a soldier. Do you consider yourself more morally upright than soldiers who have killed, or still kill, people at the war front?

I do not make excuses for David. The bible doesn't either. I only suggested that looking at it in the light of the prevalent standards at the time might influence your evaluation of his actions.

The general flatness of the bellies of all lizards does not permit the easy identification of the one that has stomach upset.

The mechanic does not permit us to know who the real mad man is.
Nairaland General › Re: Not (a) Chicken! by Genial(op): 7:07pm On May 26, 2006
The man that spreads his essence carelessly should be ready to answer the title of father to any child he meets on the road

When a man is determined to get to his ruin, he challenges his gods to a personal battle

It is only a tree that remains in one place after it hears that it will be cut down

When a human needs to scratch his back he goes to another human. When a goat needs to scratch its back it goes to a tree.
Nairaland General › Re: Not (a) Chicken! by Genial(op): 6:27pm On May 26, 2006
Hmmm. . . gracious in victory!

A child that insists on playing with the sand must be prepared to get his hands dirty.

It is an unfortunate man that injures himself with his farm implement just as he is about to head home.

So we agree that he had some respect for human life, however little that is.

Seun:
I should have said "little respect for human life". Remember the (200?) Philistines he killed just so he could get their foreskins and get his wife. Would you like to be killed so someone can get married to his preferred lover?
According to today's standards, yes. . . it does appear shocking.

But according to the standards of the time. . . ?

If Jesus had lived on earth today, I wonder what he'd say about this. . . .

Did you notice how many times he openly, sometimes even to the point of 'sacrilege', contravened the traditions of the Pharisees? By the way, these Pharisees also called these traditions 'the Law of Moses', hence the rebuke, "Why do you break God's command for the sake of your traditions?" (Matt. 15: 1-9) and 'You diligently study the scriptures, because you think that by them you possess eternal life. . . these are the (same) scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me for life". (John 5: 39, 40).

This one is also very instructive:

"But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?" (John 5: 45 - 47)

I think many of us would send him to the cross again.

I hate David. If you study his life without rose-colored glasses, you will be disgusted. He was no better than a modern day militia leader, a murderous man with no respect for human life, yet he is considered as a hero.
Militia leader maybe. . .no respect for human life - arguably so.

Did you read about the time he refused to drink the water that his men got for him, simply because it was done at the risk of their lives? Or when he refused to let Abishai remove Shimei's head from his body because he was cursing the king during their flight from Absalom? And did you also read the several times he rebuked his nephews, the sons of Zeruiah - Joab and his brothers - for their violence and readiness to shed blood at the drop of a hat with the words 'you sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me'? How about the times he refused to kill Saul when he could easily have done so? Etc, etc.

Maybe he had some respect for human life, afterall.

@ wormedup

When a child eats the food for which he has kept awake, his eyes are heavy with sleep.

He that must eat a toad should eat a robust one, so that when he is called a toad eater he will bear the title with dignity.

@wormedup:

He that brags before a fight should not rejoice like he that brags after a fight.

The locust that is captured by a noisy bird (okpoko - what's it called?) must be deaf!

A child that is old enough to lose his teeth is not ashamed to open his mouth.

It is needless to poke at a package that will eventually be opened.

It is an unfortunate person that washes his hands to break palm kernels only for chickens to consume the lot.

A person that lives beside a stream does not wash his hands with spittle.
