Kaczynski:You should read the points where most outlined how bankers out-earn doctors. Plastic doctors were the exception. Moreover, that is just banking whereas I also mentioned quant specialists. How many US doctors get paid $250K as an intern? If you say doctors earn lowly during housemanship before commencing their careers, remember that they spent more than half a decade learning it. Mathematicians spend only four years. It is no surprise that even in Nigeria, the most brilliant folks (judging from WASSCE and UTME scores) aren't interested in medicine as a career path. E no dey pay. |
MrPresidon:Your business would prosper. If in Japan where the natives are largely honest, dry cleaning businesses request for FULL PAYMENT after the collection of clothes, then you are on the right path by requesting for 70%. Anyone does not like it should buy bucket and OMO. |
Nazgul:Those are revenues, not profits. What is his profit margin? Also, how long has he been in the business? Who are his clientele? |
pansophist:lol Those countries except for Australia (aside from language similarity) have onerous post-study work visa policies for Africans. Why do you keep recommending them? They are not feasible in any way for an African who wants to stay back after their studies. For education purposes, Switzerland is the only better option. I don't see the reason an African should spend money to study in Finland and Austria simply for educational reasons. |
pansophist:Karleb, she I told you this stuff? Hypergamy works because men have to toil to get the women of their dreams/interests. The reason men work isn't just for themselves, but for their women. |
Kukutenla:Subsidies work best in countries with fewer people or homogenous demographics. Cultures are different and when yoked together, they have different approaches to life. Nigeria cannot be like Namibia or Saudi Arabia or Norway simply because of our population and ethnic diversity. Developed countries apply subsidies, but one thing you must know about almost every developed country today is that it became developed and prosperous as disproportionately homogenous nations. Apart from the US which had only a black population of less than 15% as of 1990, no other developed nation that you can think of today is heterogenous. So you see, subsidy works best in homogenous settings. A nuclear family will utilise subsidised resources better than a polygamous home because the former is homogenous by blood. The same applies to extended families. Humans are tribal. About slavery, while the West enslaved us, the belief that having slaves lead to prosperity does not apply to East Asia or now rapidly developing South east Asia. If you equate slaves to cheap labour, labour costs are cheaper in Nigeria compared to China. Thus, a developed and prosperous society can be achieved without slavery. You think Nigeria's economy is not free? I beg to disagree! The Nigerian economy is free. Most Nigerians get by with little or no government interference. As a matter of fact, government interference complicates things just as we presently have with the whole issue of subsidy. The basic fault with fuel subsidy is corruption. We can't even say how much we consume with confidence. We talk of smuggling, oil theft, bunkering and we ignore all that to complain of subsidy? OK. The subsidy removed since last year, over a year now, where is it? The claim was that we spend N400bn every month on subsidy. It's over a year now that it had been removed. That's N4.8trn. Can you point to any cogent thing that has been done by this govt that you think can amount to just N2trn? So where's the money? You cannot export yam from Nigeria. This means farmers in the north central have been cut off from the export market while their Ghanaian counterparts export yams to African communities in the abroad. Two, STARLINK Nigeria which generated $1BN from cocoa exports could not have achieved the same if not for SAP by IBB. Before then, there were commodity boards. Today, farmers in the north make a lot of money by selling their farm produce at market rates to exporters. That is freedom. If you want to eliminate corruption, reduce subsidies or remove them entirely. NITEL was subsidised, but it was inherently corrupt. MTN is not perfect, but anyone in anywhere across Nigeria can obtain a SIM CARD without knowing anybody. Mr IbeOkehie has written extensively on this. From what I have read, subsidy seems not have to be fully removed. This problem started when Tinubu and Buhari vehemently opposed and fought Jonathana for the same policy they try to enact today. Karma if you ask me. The problem with Tinubu's policies seem to be his crony capitalism, which is not surprising anyway. He has always been a crony capitalism. |
Ayo1011:If so, then interested folks should aim for partial scholarships while being prepared to cover the remaining part to move from Category B to Category A. I recall when I disagreed with Nigerian students aiming at Germany last year but was vehemently insulted by a few Nairalanders. You see, in this life, you have to be brutally realistic and always expect the worst to happen even while hoping for the best. I don't consider it reasonable for any Nigerian student to spend two years undergoing online classes while hoping to get an interview date. No school would wait for you. You are better off using the blocked funds to cultivate cassava and process it into garri then flour and hopefully ethanol. Germany should be erased from the minds of anyone who doesn't qualify for Category A as a place to study as a graduate student from Nigeria. If you love Germany, do so on a work visa. |
Kirssey:If so, what do you say about this post?: Hannania: |

IbeOkehie:The post really made sense. I thought you were the one who wrote it sef. If things don't change for the better in the next decade, I forsee many young Africans (the Gen-Zs and Gen Alpha) yearning for a return to colonialism or charter nations. However, I don't fully believe the West wishes to see a prosperous Africa judging from recent events. Nevertheless, it is in our hands to make the continent better, not anyone else. |
Onegai:Maybe for Canada Express Entry, but if I am to go by the media opinions surrounding UK japa, I would wager that the majority were married, especially as the naira's value plummeted and immigration rules tightened. Student visa japa to other countries generally favours single people. You're getting a country of poor people with a population replacement of the poorest and most uneducated lot. And even in that demographic, they're now avoiding Marriage and Reproduction. At the bold, the birth rate begs to disagree. But I do agree that marriage cum birth rates in the south are lower than in the north. It's hard to see but will be more noticeable in the coming years. People who monitor these things have already noticed it.Any place you could point me to? Like journal studies or guest opinion articles. Thank you. |
Solanaa:Yes. I can differentiate Africans according to the region they come from. Over 10, I get 8 right. Southern Africans have certain features which are distinguishable from East Africans as well as West Africans. It is getting the country that is hard for me as there are many countries within each region. So, most times, I go with the region or a general name. Except for a few such as Ghanaians with their accent or South Sudanese with their height and dark colour. Southern African women are very distinct because they have big yansh - steatopygia. Also, they have a unique accent. Those in the Horn of Africa are also distinguishable to me because of their skin complexion. Nonetheless, I can easily tell who is an Francophone African. One feature is that Francophone Africans tend to be calmer in their disposition. In my opinion, they have this less aggressive look. Take for example, I believe Americans are whiter than Romania and Romanians are whiter than Japanese (Asians) probably Yellow, Then Asians are whiter than South America while they are whiter than the arabs usually referred to as brown then Africa is the darkest in terms of skin color.I can differentiate Arabs very easily and even go further by differentiating them based on their appearances. I base this on the wealth status of countries. I believe an Emirati or Saudi would look "cleaner, posher and richer" than an Egyptian. I can also tell if the certain Arab grew up in the West by how fluent the English is and skin texture. As for Americans, I can know them by how loud they talk. Generally, I classify them as Anglophones - Irish, British, Australians, and Americans. Only Americans have marked differences. It is quite hard for me to differentiate the other three as the tone of their English is the same. For Indians, I do the same and even try to pin-point the particular region with India. However, I failed in this recently but got an earlier guess right. I guessed Goa for both, but the most recent encounter comes from Chennai. I do the same for Pakistanis. I did one recently but he is from Mauritius, which historically had immigrants from India. Those from Nepal makes it hard for me as they look like Indians. Vietnamese, on the other hand, are easily identifiable. For East Asians, I would say I am almost perfect as I work with Japanese and Chinese. I also studied with them. Mainland Chinese tend to be very loud just like Americans and also in their spoken Chinese. Singaporeans, Taiwanese and Chinese Malaysians aren't the same. I would add Hong Kong as well. On the other hand, I can easily differentiate a Singaporean/Malaysian Chinese from other Chinese groups by their accent. It is so distinct. I did this with a Chinese PhD student who lectured me and an Indonesian for an experiment. First, I mentioned Singapore which was wrong and replied with Malaysia, which was right. The accent is so unique. This applies to Indians and Malaysians of Singaporean origins. I know Koreans and Hong Kong Chinese - they speak better English than Mainland Chinese. Again, the accent of Mainland Chinese is easily noticeable when they speak English. Eastern Europeans are generally whiter than those in the West. Northern Europeans and those in Central Europe (Austria and Switzerland) have unique features, but I would say they are whiter than those in the UK, France, the US, Canada, Spain etc. Those in the north and east have this "blonde look" that is not found elsewhere amongst Caucasians. Israelis are basically Eastern European Jews who emigrated from Europe. Yes, South Americans are different except for Chileans, Argentines, Uruguayans and those in Southern Brazil who look exactly like Europeans (Swiss, German, Italians and Spanish). No difference whatsoever. In my opinion, Chinese (from the eastern part where the wealth is) and Koreans are "whiter" than Japanese. Japanese from the south or Okinawa have a slightly different skin colour from those on Mainland Japan. Lastly, for African Americans, I can easily know them as their skin texture is very different from black Africans. I think only South Africans come close, which is not surprising as both groups are the wealthiest set of black people in the world. Also, the way African Americans speak, walk, dress and do things is markedly different from black Africans. Before amassing these experiences, I asked another Nairalander - Ramalot - a similar question. You can find his response here: https://www.nairaland.com/7484940/lived-visited-over-30-countries/1 |
Proserpina:Interesting. No harm intended, but what would you use your money for? |
BlueRayDick:Fair deal. Thank you. |
Supposedly "educated" Nigerians with PhDs, MBAs and other relevant credentials/certifications vigorously campaigned and voted for him because he told them "I would phight kwarruption". Tomorrow, they come online to type big big grammar claiming to be "intelligent". More like intellectwats! |
The UAE is a strategic country in the grand scheme of things. The elites have done well. But I wonder how its relationship with Russia would be managed since it had to reassure its biggest ally - the US - of its partnership in Artificial-intelligence with China. The country has benefited immensely from the influx of Russians from the UK/EU and Russia into its territory. House prices have quadrupled and there's a booming Moscow like scene in Dubai and environs. When a country get better elites, e dey show for body. |
Gerrard59:Thank you to everyone who responded. As a result of recent events, another question came up within my mind. The national grid has collapsed twice (maybe thrice?). Does this affect Band A areas/customers as well? If yes, what's the severity like? Lessened or as everyone else? Thank you. |
IbeOkehie:When I read some of the items/industries Nigerians want to be subsidised, I am shocked. Something is wrong with the quality of education most of us obtain. Why would someone advocate subsidy for solar panels or DSTV? |
Nwaikpe:All he has to do is employ seasoned professionals to manage his investments. What value does Ronaldo add to the world beyond his artistic talent? Is Ronaldo a poor man? What about Thierry Henry and the likes? |
I am glad to see young people make financial success from non-conventional sources that are legal. This is the third time I have come across his name, but read that he is popular on TikTok - a new source where young Nigerians are making a kill with their talents. I see many envious people here who should be happy that young people are making it in life faster and in foreign currency. A good reason never to publicise one's success story in pictorial form. No wonder witches full black dominated environments. |
NybenSBF101:The previous generation with all its performative morality wasn't any better. The previous generations made Nigeria what it is. Make we hear word abeg. |
MasterTeeUSA:Na small small. He would climb the hierarchy ladder with time. I wonder why he is lampooned. Did he steal the money used to purchase the car? |
deji17:I am curious, how exactly is it nonsense? Provided his source of income is legal, nothing wrong in getting himself a car as a reward for his hard work. |
tensazangetsu20:While this is true, but for him to have issues with the pastors after her side has been aired shows he has the biggest faults. Churches generally favour men in most cases, but he is not happy none is siding with him. That tells something. |
I am a strong advocate of the two-parent household, but in this case, there should be a separation. Maybe not outright divorce since OP does not like it, but for the sake of mental sanity, OP needs to be be separate from her husband. Since she has better finances, the kids stay with her. The man visits as arranged. I don't believe in a do-or-die situation/marriage. If e tire person, let it go. jify, No vex, but wetin una dey discuss during courtship? I thought married folks married their best friends kini kon kini kon ![]() tosinhtml:I wonder wetin men dey see for underage children. But seeing the demographic involved, I am not too surprised. Anything can happen. |
Kaczynski:Because of this post, I will create a thread of salaries in the banking industry. P.S. The average banker out-earns his medical counterpart, especially when the years of training are factored in. I am willing to bet the bonuses of bankers would match the salaries of doctors. The only positive economic benefit about medicine is job security till old age. Nothing else. If na money, doctors are not amongst the top three highest-paid professionals in any part of the developed world. Quant/finance, tech and law professionals are the top three. Most importantly, they spend fewer years in school than doctors. |
Onegai:Largely as a result of economic reasons: anameic economic growth for almost a decade with an increase in population, deaths of young men via ethnic clashes, security brutality, destruction of livelihoods, competition for scarce resources etc. Nigeria is a largely conservative country such that an increase in living standards would translate to higher marriage rates. Northern Nigeria, even with the economic crises, still adore marriage. Social media rhetoric isn't a full representation of Nigeria. Nigerians (both genders) love marriage and wish to get married. |
If anyone had told me eggs would be so expensive and hit 7K (present prices), I would not have believed it. During my university days, I ensured there was a crate as long as school was in session. Boiled eggs remain my favourite and ready source of proteins. |
Saladdin:It is actually a global phenomenon. Check all the top successful entrepreneurs - the majority worked somewhere even for, as you stated, three months. Some industries even necessitated it even when one has the finance, which is an exception. How many oil companies were started by fresh graduates? Or audit firms? Or notable engineering firms? People have to grind for a while to learn the ropes and establish a network and reputation, especially if banks are to lend the business money. For those who began immediately school, they had a strong supportive system - educated and grounded investors, wealthy parents, hired managers who knew the industry etc. One of the benefits of working in a structured environment is managing people. A company goes beyond its products and services as people are the engine room of any company. The way they are managed will affect the company negatively or positively. Four years ago, I stated the same: Gerrard59: |
I come in peace. I want to get something straight. How many hours of electricity does a provider supply an area designated as "Band A"? If it is at least 20 hours per day, how come people complain about the prices since it is almost constant? And protest if their area is about to be designated Band A? Two, how come industries still have to face diesel issues when Band A areas are available across every state (please correct me if I am wrong)? Or is Band A only meant for residential areas? Thank you. |
