FamilyRe: How Are Families Coping Under This Government? by Gerrard59(m): 9:42pm On Oct 10, 2024
stagger:
Fear mongering.
You do not need more than half a plot of land to farm all a family needs for food. I have a section on my own farm where I produce tomatoes, pepper, plantain, oranges, coconut, pawpaw, ugu, water leaf and bitter leaf. My cassava I harvested from another location gave me 300kg of gari. Abakaliki rice I bought when it was still 38,000 a bag...we never finish am. Beans harvest is due in November. Corn we eat and also use some for our birds. I have palm oil from another land where I have palm trees. Same land also gives me pineapples. I have goats, chickens. The only thing I buy is onions and condiments, many of which I bought in bulk for those with long expiry dates. The problem is Nigerians do not think and do not make any effort at positive innovation. They just sit and complain and complain and complain. Even as fuel is expensive, how many have thought to save up to buy bicycles and use this as a made of transport just as is done in Tokyo and Utrecht? Feeding a family is a conscious decision which should be made by EVERY MAN worth his salt.
It is DANGEROUS to ride bicycles in many cities in Nigeria. Let's be honest when we offer solutions. In many Nigerian cities, even pedestrians cannot walk comfortably on their paths, na bicycle riders go dey comfortable?

The farming you have done is wonderful. Unfortunately, farmers in Zamfara, Borno, and Benue would beg to disagree. Youths in Enugu cooperated to open a rice farm only for Fulani herdsmen to destroy everything. Sometimes, I wonder why Nigerians sound so heartless considering the number of times they are seen in churches and mosques. During the last months of Jonathan till the early years of Buhari's first tenure, MANY Nigerians invested in farming. There were threads upon threads of Nairalanders who invested up to 10 million in various areas of agri-business. Ten million naira in 2014-2017. What happened? Fulani herdsmen ransacked farms and slaughtered people across Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Edo, Ogun, Enugu etc. What did fellow Nigerians do? They kept mum.

For people who claim to be so religious and godly, many Nigerians tend to be so wicked, cruel and hypocritical.

The warehouse packing job I did was because I had to improve my Japanese proficiency as I was job hunting. I needed to be in an environment where only Japanese was spoken and heard. The moment I signed my graduate job offer, I resigned immediately. In Japan, you get a job before you graduate. The other Nigerian I met there, his fingers and palms had deteriorated so badly that it was a warning to me: get a professional job in Japan or return to Nigeria with your scholarship benefits. Here, dishwashing is mostly performed with machines as no human is involved in the process. The most lucrative part-time jobs in Japan are in warehouses (many Africans and Middle Eastern folks) and factory jobs (Vietnamese youths have populated that section as they have better Japanese proficiency). Chinese tend to work in customer-facing positions as they have a better grasp of Kanji and businesses like to employ them to cater to Chinese visitors.

Having the right skill set and brains is extremely important if one wants to live a comfortable life in the abroad. From what I have seen from afar, there are some conditions that I rather move back home than indulge in. Funny enough, one does not come across Southern Africans in such conditions, but mainly West and to an extent Eastern Africans.

like you said it a skill set issue even at that majority still work with these facilities while in school before they get to that level
That is
You must start somewhere and all these jobs are part of it
That is true. Japanese companies prioritise internships and part-time experiences during interviews. They want to know if you have worked while studying no matter how financially comfortable you are. A lab mate worked as an attendant in a vegan restaurant in Kyoto during the weekends even though her parents were very comfortable. Two others who I was close to worked part-time to offset living costs. One was even owing his rent, but they got good jobs before graduation - Y300K per month in a consulting firm in Tokyo. The difference is that the citizens don't do the hard jobs we do. Na wetin I no want be that. Maybe it is my upbringing sha.

I noticed how expensive the place is. How not having a car is like being on wheelchair because commuting is not efficient.
From what I read, an efficient mass public transport system is an anathema in North America due to the size, automobile industrial lobbyers and years of segregation. So I understand how you felt.

The streets are very colourful though, with folks from all corners of the earth, although they mostly stick together to their group.
Just as everywhere else. Humans are tribal.

Kelechi009:
Yes, I was doing a study of life in Nigeria from 1940s to 1960s for a project I am working on, I realised that Nigeria would have been better off staying colonised, so far so little has been achieved with the so-called independence. I looked into other African countries as well, there are fairing much better but we are in the same boat. Nigeria never developed one bit since then. We will keep creating oppressors over oppressors in the next 100 years, the worse than Abacha regime will still happen. We're not even there yet.

I have siblings back in Nigeria & I'm trying to move them out, but looking at the cost per head, It is costing me a lot. I'm upset.
The structure of Nigeria is the issue. But then, other African countries that are much more homogenous and peaceful have not really progressed. Maybe we should define what is progress and which countries have progressed over the years. However, about the developments, for infrastructural developments, we have put in place what the British never did. They only invested their soul in Southern Africa. Na why dem no gree comot on time.

Kelechi009:
Hmm I agree with you, and quite frankly agree with the argument we use to have that the white man is actually far more intelligent than the black man, it took me a while to get here but I am eventually here. I'll probably create a long thread to explain this later on. I sincerely wish we never left the English slavery called Colonisation, my life would have been better off being colonised. I'm so livid right now.
No vex o, but were you serious when you typed those words? I whispered "Ah!"

But back to the point, you've made a great point about why many talented people, especially from average backgrounds, choose money over further studies or research. Using Nigerian footballers as an example is a good way to explain this. Just like some of our best players choose to play in less competitive leagues for higher pay, many brilliant minds in Africa do the same with their careers. They prioritize making money quickly because they need to support themselves and their families.

The same thing happens with scientists. To do big things in research, like winning a Nobel Prize, you need time, money, and support. But for many, survival comes first. They take jobs that pay well right away instead of going into research, which can take a long time to pay off. This is why we don't see as many black people winning Nobel Prizes in science yet, many are focused on overcoming financial struggles.

Before anyone can think about making big discoveries or building research institutions, they have to defeat poverty. If we can create better opportunities for people to succeed without worrying about money, then more brilliant African minds will have the chance to shine in research and maybe even win a Nobel Prize one day.
You explained it better. The Maslow Hierarchy of Needs explains everything. But if so, how come older Chinese scientists who grew under Mao were able to forge ahead in research? Let's not forget that the Nobel rewards mostly if not entirely basic research. What about Indians and Pakistanis? Fine, some of them were raised in the West and/or almost all (early Indian and Pakistanis) scientists studied in Western institutions. So did we. How come they were able to focus on research and generate fantastic ideas which had great impacts? If we say poverty and colonisation are the obstacles, how come Pakistanis and Indians forged ahead? For poverty, we have had Chinese who grew up under Mao and Japanese who lived and had their lives disrupted after the World War cart away prizes.

I am more than happy my brother. Getting married to the right woman is just the koko. Take time to court her and understand each other . I will say it loud again , I have never regretted my actions one day . Sometimes when I go out to chill with my single friends, I kinda feel sorry for some seeing that they re still living the life we lived 12 to 15 ago. Relationship stress, still spending on olosho to cure Konji, still drinking heavily and keeping late nights.
Married men do these as well. That is an individual trait, not dependent on one's marital status. Married women withhold sex from their husbands, so these men resort to going outside. Sex is not free. Every man pays for it at a point. During Buhari's first tenure and the accompanying recession, there were tales of women withholding sex from their husbands and sleeping outside to raise money for the family's welfare.

These are narrative from friends all around me since I declare my intention that guy it's time I settle down for marriage, but I keep hearing this same words from friends and even my guys abroad. That guy I re very lucky . forget that move and look for a baby mama.
The solution is marry someone who LIKES you even though modern women are built not to deeply like men. Have fewer children. Prepare financially for old age. Exercise. Learn to be independent - the reason financial stability is important. While one does not wish for divorce, be open to it. No die put for marriage. That worked then. In an individualistic world, as we have, the era of willing to die for wife and children has passed. Again, have fewer children. All man for himself. God for us all.

Your topic is the same narrative is offered by people who attended top institutions coming to social media to deride the same institution that gave them the opportunities and privileges they enjoy.

P.S. The bold is worse than marrying a woman.

Treadway:
bro, we have to defend the naira because we simply do not have the capacity to do the alternative, at least not in the immediate, which is to be a net exporter of finished goods and not just raw materials. Becoming an industrialized nation clearly cannot happen overnight. We are not even on the path to it. So, no point deceiving ourselves with textbook policies that simply don't apply in our case at this time.
I do agree. I think the government have introduced some policies aimed at attracting foreign investors, but these policies need to be consistent over time to reassure investors of the protection of their investments. On the other hand, there are still many outdated laws which hinder investments.

All they needed to do was hold the fort till at least this Dangote refinery came on stream. That was all they needed to do. 40% of our Forex goes to petrol imports...Dangote comes online, that 40% Forex is saved, increase in supply of USD available to go round.
The issue with Dangote's refinery is that he wants to be the ONLY supplier of petroleum products to Nigeria. That is wrong. Also, even if we have to only depend on local refiners, we should wait for others to come on board (BUA and other modular refiners). In the meantime, Dangote should refine and sell at whatever price he desires, but he cannot be the sole supplier of petroleum products to Nigeria.

If they had done that fuel wouldn't be more than 500 now and it would have been kept consistent since may 2023, all these supply challenges wouldn't have happened...the subsidy removal would have been absolute, monies actually saved, not this one that they have still being actively doing 'shortfall' cos the naira became that worthless.
Maybe if Tinubu, Buhari, Sanusi, Amaechi, the majority of Nigerians and Co had realised that subsidy existed rather than fight Jonathan and NOI, we would not be in the present situation.

Subsidy had to go. We cannot continue subsidising petrol for a humongous population that has porous borders. However, Dangote should not be the sole supplier. If he cannot compete in a market-based pricing system, he should sell to buyers elsewhere. It is a free world.

I recall my argument when I was much younger in 2012. They were (paraphrased): the government has no business running refineries. They should be handed over to private businesses. The government should subsidise primary and secondary school education and healthcare. However, everything else should be privatised.

I am pretty proud of myself for the consistency and the fact that my position has been the best in more than a decade.

To qualify for USA's accounting licensing exam, CPA, one has to have undergone 150 credit hours of studies. A typical accounting BSc is only 120 credit hours, making one to have a deficit of 30 credit hours.
Some go to community colleges after Bachelors, while most go for Masters in Accounting just to meet the 150 credit hours.
Until recently, bachelor programs in accounting lasted for five years with the final year offering CPA courses and writing the exam.

The credit hours can also be gotten by doing an MBA with a major in Accounting. But this is a very wrong and unintelligent way to use an MBA.
Agreed.

ICAN/ACCA doesn't count towards the CPA in the US.
Interesting. I did not know of this.

For someone that wants to:
1. Japa through study route.
2. Meet the required credit hours and get the CPA license.
Masters in Accounting remains the best option, though I stand to be corrected.
With your explanation, then you are correct.

Thanks for your response.

He does support Buhari, and did so in 2015 and 2019. He is one of those Nigerians with plenty of degrees who term themselves as intellectwats meanwhile they campaigned and voted for a man whose business defied the basic laws of economics and biology. I find it hard to consider people who campaigned and voted for Buhari in 2015 to be serious and intelligent.

Sorry Mr Treadway because I know I would be accused of being rude and loud-mouthed, but that is my candid opinion.

Thank you.

P.S. That said, subsidy has to go. The comparison with India, Russia or the US is lopsided. Those are largely homogenous countries, with long histories, relatively strong institutions etc. Nigeria is too divided to sustain subsidies. We are too populated vis-a-vis to our oil production to claim we are a rich country. Yes, there is corruption, but that is largely because there have been government's intereferences over the years. The economy should be freer than it is as it is practised in the US - let there be little government interference in people's daily activities or the economy. Mr IbeOkehie has written countless times on this issue.
PoliticsRe: How Nigeria, Its People, and Its Govt Got It All Wrong (29/5/26) by Gerrard59(m): 11:25pm On Oct 09, 2024
From your your mention
Treadway:
Today makes 1 year that the calamitous regime took power, and I am happy that on all these points, I have been totally vindicated 💯

1. Returning APC to power, after the colossal failure of the 8 year Buhari administration, from same APC.

Forget the innuendos of the brain dead vulture griller and it's 'darling daddy' drab lines courtesy 'dem manna', this is one rabbit hole I didn't expect even 500000 people to fall into. After what Buhari did to Nigeria, why would any right-thinking person want to entrust/reward the APC with power again? When you reward incompetence so consistently, you embolden it and institutionalise it, as is the case today, yesterday, and possibly evermore..(cos I don't know what the hell these people are smoking). The right thing is the APC should not have been rewarded for failure. Even if I supported Obi and he lost, i would have been proud of Nigerians if they had voted Monkey party, worm party, just about any party but the disaster called the APC
While this is true, the issue was enthroning Buhari/APC into power. Buhari who was a dictator was never going to suddenly change into a reformed democrat like the ediots in Red Media. Buhari should not have become the president in 2015. That is where the problem commenced from.

2. Fuel Subsidy and Naira Float misadventure

I sell cars, and in January I sold the last V6 vehicle I had in stock, I also purchased 500l of fuel for keeps (which lasted me till October thankfully). I did all that because I expected and support the idea of fuel subsidy removal. What I did not expect, was Bola Thubv would win and repeat the same mistakes that Buhari/Emefiele made on a more disastrous scale. In 2015, Buhari took the equally 'bold' step to remove subsidy. Fast forward to second qtr 2016, he also foolishly decided to float the naira. What happened? The dollar moved from 180/200s to 360/400's. Because we import fuel, this impacted the fuel costs which had been largely stable from May 2015 till that time, and en last year or two years ago. The right thing was to remove subsidy, and still defend the naira to keep the effects of the subsidy removal controlled. If you were hypothetically using 1trillion on subsidy per month, ain't it just common sense to use say 300billion to defend naira and still partly save 700bllion that would have gone into subsidy. The drop in the value of the naira which had affected everything else would not have happened, it was totally avoidable but for the arrogant and reckless Thubv. How could these people vote APC??
Why do we have to still defend the naira? Should the currency not be allowed to be where it ought to be on its own?

3. Cardunce-o The CBN Governor

Need I say more? In a time of economic peril one should expect a reasonable govt to put square pegs in square holes. But no, they put a goat in charge of yam. All the real sectors are declaring bumper losses, only banks are declaring bumper profits, same caucus that Cardunce-o is part of same caucus that has benefitted from round tripping and arbitrage, is the same individual that Thubv thought right to head the CBN, an individual that managed a low-tier bank with probably less than 15 branches, na im Una expect to formulate sound policies in a time of economic peril? Laughable! The right thing to do would have been to recruit a capable, skilled and vastly experienced economist someone with a brain and resume like NOI. No cap, with my tiny MBA I go bench Cardunce-o, tell Thubv to ring me up asap!
To be honest, regardless of the CBN governor's qualifications and credentials, he would still be answerable to Tinubu. There is little independence between both corridors of power, especially judging Emefiele and Buhari's bromance.

4. Propaganda on overdrive

The level of insincerity is mind-boggling and irritating. The lies are too much. You literally can't trust a word these mofos are saying ever. Thank God for the individuals who dey leak some of their plans to the press. Thank God for the internet, we would have been so much in the dark on everything. We would probably be planning a Dubai trip riding on the words of Ajuri and get gobsmacked upon the feedback from the visa application. The right thing...is impossible to do for this govt. They are relentlessly untruthful, deceitful, self-serving and incapable of doing the right thing. It is their MO.
APC has lied for more than a decade since I started following Nigeria's politics. Since 2021, the consistency should be applauded though. It went on an overdrive in 2014-2015.

I thought I saw insecurity somewhere, but the silence from some parts of the country, when Fulani herdsmen went overdrive in destroying communities, ransacking people's farmlands and causing havoc across many parts of the country, was terrible. Nigeria is too divisive to get a president or politicians who have the country's heart.

In US/Canada, EU, public transport by road and rail, is heavily subsidized by govts.
In Naija govt gives favors and waivers to to their crony friends, fronts and agents. They socialize losses and pass on to Naija citizens while passing on gains to their friends/cronies.
Agreed.

However, the sectors of the economy are still controlled by the government. Lands, minerals etc.

Naija is where we are today, but govts and cronies found out that exporting our crude oil and importing it back is more profitable.
Oando, owned by Tinubus, is buying an existing refinery in Trinidad and Tobago … for what? Naija market. They want to kick out Dangote. 80% of our FX goes to petroleum imports.
Dangote wants the government to BAN the importation of petrol because he has a refinery. That is very wrong. He cannot be the sole source of Nigeria's petrol consumption. The scenario of subsidy removal is when ANYONE can import petrol and/or produce it in Nigeria and sell at MARKET PRICES without any restrictions whatsoever. Dangote should run his refinery, but importation of petrol should be allowed.

Sorry, but anytime I see people who want to pursue a master's in Accounting, I take it to be that they are ignorant or want to be in academia (very few people are in this group). You need to write ICAN/ACCA, then to ascend/diversify the career ladder or increase your earnings, you can move to CFA/CAIA or maybe an MBA (I find it worthless these days, I don't know why. I might be ignorant on this).

If it is a means to japa, well, you still need to do ICAN/ACCA as credits might be transferrable to the country of destination. But aside from academia, you really don't need a master's. And sorry, there are very few scholarships at that level of graduate studies because it is very easy to get a job after graduation (after certification).

It seems all the scholarships are directed towards PhD candidates. Highest I have seen for non doctoral degrees is application waiver and a grant of maybe $3,000-$5,000.That's what I've seen so far for USA.
As a policy, all PhD programs in developed countries including places like Brazil and Thailand are fully funded via tuition waiver with a stipend or a full scholarship. The most competitive scholarships, which are very few, tend to be at undergraduate levels since most universities make a lot of money, especially from foreigners, from that level. At master's level, highly lucrative courses tend to have fewer scholarships since it is believed that the ROI after graduation is very high. No one should expect a scholarship in AI or Robotics at master's level except the person is part of the 1% of academic achievers.

HOW did Indonesia BECOME productive? That's what should concern you. What factors and things CONTRIBUTED to their situation? Tell us about that so we can learn and think about how to adapt it to Nigeria.

Indonesia didn't come into being as a productive economy. Was Indonesia producing all these things in the year 1800? Was China a manufacturing nation in 1950? What about South Korea? So WHEN and HOW did it happen for them , that is the issue to really figure out. Typical Nigerians are always salivating over results and not the process.

The proven factors of a successful nation with high HDI are democracy, free markets, demographic or cultural homogeneity, and property rights. The more a nation has of those factors, then the more successful it's LIKELY to be. That's all.

Unfortunately Nigeria only has a little modicum of democracy and THE people elected a socialist party in 2015. The results of that STUPIDITY are manifesting today.

Indonesia is not even a rich country but I'm willing to bet it has more of the factors for productivity and HDI success than Nigeria.
I really haven't read much about Indonesia and I'm willing to risk that statement. We've already established they have a FREE FLOATING currency so we can give them props for being wiser than Nigeria on that one issue.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

I have followed your points so far in this thread. You don try. You have done so well trying to explain the ill effects of socialism and feeding bottles to these people. Yte they have refused to grasp the basic principles behind economic prosperity and national development. Let it go. The tale about someone doing the same thing while expecting different results will tell on everyone in a decade if things continue the way they are. The one who claims to be knowledgeable of the Indonesian economy forgets that the Rupiah value is terribly low. The same applies to Vietnam.

Honestly, the black man is socialist at heart. I am yet to be convinced otherwise.

The price either has to increase or the product becomes scarcer as long as subsidies exist. There are no two ways about it.
FoodRe: I bought this Crate Of Eggs From The Mall. I’m So Disappointed by Gerrard59(m): 5:44pm On Oct 09, 2024
It seems most of the commentators did not read where OP stated that the eggs actually went bad upon frying. So the tales of "BBB not being bad" are false. The lesson learnt is: don't buy eggs from the supermarket. Buy from nearby retailers. Also, follow the dates as stated: once the date is close and the quantity is more than what you can consume within that period, don't buy.
