Most commentators forget that Ini Edo has a child. Whether the husband is known or actively present isn't the issue here. But we should be prepared for the emerging family unit or persons who are not interested in marriage as we know it, for now, to be. Once a child is born without a formal marriage tie, many in this generation would look forward to being single. |

Treadway: about the loans... I didnt go that route cos the problem was not so much the lack of liquidity, as it was the fact that for the first time in a long time I was fearful for the future and needed to get a safety net ASAP. I needed something sure as a back up, as also as a means of increasing my capital base to grow the existing business or divest into something else.
What I sell are basically consumer discretionary goods, and with the dreadful squeeze in disposable income, I have been badly affected... sales has been topsy-turvy for the most part this year. Hence, my decision to get back on the saddle before shit hits the fan😁. I see. Thanks for your explanation. It is just bad that the country is still at the stage where survival goods are the mainstay of the economy, rather than high priced goods/services. I think Kenya and South Africa perform better than us in that aspect. |

CatchMeIfUCanMO: It is just your opinion and his own opinion, he is not right in anyway.
That doesn't in anyway reflect the reality of life. Across the world, studies upon studies have revealed that quant courses lead to higher earnings in one's career than non-quant courses. So, it is a fact, not just an opinion whether they go on to become wealthier in life (their chances are already higher because of higher earnings) is moot. Fact is: they earn higher in the labour market. What will you now say about uneducated people that becomes rich in life, since they don't have formal education? The thread isn't about those who did not attend a tertiary institution. Or what will your opinion about graduate who couldn't make it with his or her degree, but somehow somehow Grace found him/her through the hustling he/she was using to survive? Grace can find anyone regardless of the person's educational background. The thread is not discussing about grace. You see anything that deals with life, leave it, don't try to apply any formula or standard whatsoever A Physics graduate has a higher chance of becoming a millionaire than a Psychology graduate. This is a global phenomenon. Why should Nigeria be different? Earlier this year, let me say January 1st of this year, the "fish pie na wa o" guy never envisaged or thought he will be where he is today. It has nothing to do with the thread. Again, this is an exception, not the norm. First-class graduates from, say, UNILAG would progress steadily in life as well. The Best Graduating Student (5.0) from UNILAG worked at Boston Consulting Group and now studies at Stanford University, sponsored by a prestigious scholarship. The course of study? Civil Engineering. The fact is, everything depends on God Almighty via destiny and grace. Apparently, grace favours those with quant backgrounds more than those without such. |

CatchMeIfUCanMO: You better wake up, you can study any course and be rich. Being financially stable has nothing to do with the course one study. Wise up! That is true, but check out those who made money while they worked, they had degrees in quant fields - economics, mathematics, engineering, physics, accounting, computer science etc. So the other poster is right. |

Quantitative degrees generally produce more millionaires than others. Only medicine comes as the non-quant-based degree, but that is like after a decade to amass and compound earnings. Medicine is good for job security, not for money-making. |

Treadway: my padi Gerrard59, remember how I shared my view on how this accursed govt shouldnt have devalued the naira, no matter what..and then you mentioned how this quoted grandpa has written on some economics hogwash about why the devaluation was necessary, but thankfully I was able to show you why it made absolutely no sense to devalue the currency, esp when the definitive solution as we know it, will still take decades, on the miraculous assumption that a sensible human being gets power (which I have I can't seem to decipher his mind space, really. To be fair, from my conversations with Mr Ibe, I sensed that Nigeria do am strong thing when he invested in the country sometime around 2011/12. So seeing the country go through this travail makes him happy. A sort of a schadenfreude. Also, I must state it something most wouldn't. But the average Igbo person is happy that Nigeria(ns) is going through a lot. The history of Nigeria and Igbos, especially with the fact that Igbos were mocked and derided for not supporting Buhari in 2015 and Tinubu in 2023, makes us relish in joy. It is a catch-22 situation as Igbos are Nigerians and the southeast is in Nigeria, but the country has not been fair to us even before independence. For one, I am ready to mock anyone who supported Buhari in 2015 who is going through a lot. I just don't have the time to make posts as Mr Ibe who is probably due to retire. But you see Buhari's supporters? If they want to die, I would be glad to hasten the death process. Oh well, after this accursed person in Aso rock successfully continued where Buhari stopped and kuma burned the naira patapata, my businesses don see shege (another goal for you Ibe). Na so I dust my satificates o, got back into corporate, landed a good role paying 24m pa (another goal for Ibe, afterall that is just a measly 15k USD right)...and now back to the drawing board thinking of the next chess moves I would need to play, while being thankful for the new capital boost to keep my businesses afloat in these cray times. Wouldn't it have been better to procure loans from established banks? I don't mean these loan sharks organisations, but standard financial organisations. To be fair to Mr Ibe too, he has mentioned how he has assisted many young Nigerians settling within his neighbourhood in the US. So, he is not that bad. As for the Nigerian economy, I find it hard to understand any longer. But I am all for less government interference in the economy. |

IbeOkehie: The best environment for CHILDREN, yes. For society, yes. For building wealth, yes. For ADULT MEN, no, because the risk or cost of MARRIAGE to the mother of his children is VERY HIGH...it can cast him into poverty or prison. You can stop reading right here if you wish. So surrogacy is best. Then if the man wants to get married, he can get a vasectomy, invest in LEGAL PROCESSES to protect his assets from ANYONE, then sign a PRENUP and get married. This is a recommendation from a seasoned family affairs lawyer.
Very fine distinctions, indeed. Just as a free market is best for economic development and anyone can make reasonable exceptions for healthcare. Migration from Nigeria is best, but there are people doing fabulously in Nigeria. I used to be a big absolutist about marriage, but times have changed. I have females in my social circle that I've talked to about this, young BLACK AFRICAN and Asian Indian women, both migrants and USA born. In fact two of these young women, their parents asked us to talk to them BECAUSE they were so anti-marriage. We sat down and discussed heart to heart, in depth. The females born in Africa are the most radically anti-marriage. These are educated, financially stable women from good families. One of them, an exceptionally beautiful lady, after listening to all our talk, just said, and I quote her word for word - "well, I'm just selfish, I just don't want any kind of compromise in my life at all, I just want to do what I want". Oh, by the way...her sister got engaged to a medical doctor and was asked to sign a prenup. She refused and they ended the relationship. This was maybe 10 years ago. The "selfish" girl GOT MARRIED to a well to do guy, divorced after a few years and two kids, sued for half of assets and child support. She got a paid off townhouse. And as I write this is enjoying her life and dispensing relationship advice on Facebook & Tik-Tok. This is real, as in this is a real person. And I've already talked about how many 2nd generation young men of Nigerian background here in the USA have SHOCKED me with their preference for single parenthood over marriage. It was these young men, a couple of whom I babysat as toddlers, that convinced me to modify my views.
Oga Gerrard, men are being put through some terrible things in the US & UK because of marriage and many are POWERLESS to defend themselves due to the LAWS. So I've modified my views on marriage accordingly. It's the best environment for CHILDREN, yes. For society, yes. For building wealth, yes. For ADULT MEN, no, because the risk of MARRIAGE to the mother of his children is VERY HIGH...it can cast him into poverty or prison. While acknowledging happy marriage promotes good mental & physical health and even PROLONGS life, everyone should weigh their status and options and act accordingly.
Good Luck to Nigerians. I do agree that times have changed, and people, especially young men, should change with the times. No wonder marriage rates, ditto birth rates, have plunged across the West. The same applies to East Asia, but here, the women don't fancy single parenthood as it is a straight path to poverty. Although, the situation in South Korea is way worse compared to China and Japan. In a decade or two, there would be many single adults in their 40s and 50s without a partner and children. I want to see how society would be by then. |
Family › Re: If I Had Known I Would Never Marry by Gerrard59(m): 1:35pm On Oct 12, 2024 |
IbeOkehie: The ultimate solution FOR MEN is try and accumulate enough money to invest in SURROGACY. Like Anderson Cooper of CNN did it. I know TWO Nigerians living in the USA that went to Nigeria and did it. The fertility medicine industry in Nigeria is booming, the quality and outcomes for various problems are good. Surprisingly it seems marriages in Nigeria are breaking down just as much as the ones in the US&UK. The kinds of things happening among middle class married people in Nigeria is very surprising. Anyway surrogacy is best. Then one can have a strictly sexual relationship with whoever, with no legal or emotional pitfalls. Good Luck to Nigerians. You have once stated, which is a fact anyway, that the best environment to raise children is the two-parent household. The children raised in that environment outperform those raised in different arrangements of upbringing. So, why advocate for surrogacy when it goes against the tenets of the two-parent household? |

Difrent: Is it not your South Company, Multichoice that spoiled Nigerians with foreign soccer? Like someone said, before EPL became so easily accessible Nigerians troop to local stadiums to watch local matches but with the advent of Satellite tv, Nigerians went crazy for European football for the main reason that with little amount you will have access , those that's can't bad league, it just needs professional managers if not it's products won't go on to become world class players when they get exposed to foreign leagues Abdicating blame needlessly. How come South Africans did not abandon their league for the EPL since Multichoice is an SA company? It is also an Anglophone nation with even stronger historical ties to the UK/Europe than Nigeria. So the excuse of language is out of the window. The English are better advertisers. Let's accept that fact. |
Politics › Re: Why Nigerians Like EPL By South Africans by Gerrard59(m): 12:29pm On Oct 12, 2024 |
Simple: The Nigerian league has football teams owned by various governments, and structures have not been put in place to allow seamless operations as in South Africa. As a result, private companies are not interested in investing in a league where state government teams participate and the Ministry of Sport has a say in its affairs. Lastly, South Africans have higher disposable income than Nigerians to indulge in outdoor sporting activities as spectators.
Solution? Privatise the league. Ban government owned teams. Have an independent body heading the league. Most importantly, Nigerians have to be rich. |

Going through the comments here while comparing them to what I read online by foreigners (Westerners) and articles about marriage by East Asians shows a stark difference in cultural thoughts towards the institution of marriage. In South Korea, birth rates have plummeted so badly that an entire generation would be lost. In the West, many young women are letting go of marriage while men are sex-starved (both single and married). An entire generation of folks would have no children or partners in the next two decades. How society would be is an interesting feature to look forward to.
Nevertheless, I believe as social animals that we, just like other animals, crave companionship and an offspring of our own. How to reconcile this fact in a hyper-individualistic world like ours today is the issue. But I really look forward to the results of this new social development. |

How can you have N10 million in 2014-2017 (equivalent to $20,000 at the worst Naira to USD exchange rate at the time) to invest in agriculture, and you cannot have 10% of that amount to invest in protection? Just like owning a N20m car and you no fit buy tracker put. Yes I agree there was a lot devastation, but I can tell you that I also put up my farming infrastructure in the North where there are also Fulanis (they leased land right behind mine). I know how I handled their matter. If you are not proactive about things in this life, life will just pass you by and the challenges of living and operating in Nigeria will swallow you. Fair enough. stagger: Fear mongering. You do not need more than half a plot of land to farm all a family needs for food. I have a section on my own farm where I produce tomatoes, pepper, plantain, oranges, coconut, pawpaw, ugu, water leaf and bitter leaf. My cassava I harvested from another location gave me 300kg of gari. Abakaliki rice I bought when it was still 38,000 a bag...we never finish am. Beans harvest is due in November. Corn we eat and also use some for our birds. I have palm oil from another land where I have palm trees. Same land also gives me pineapples. I have goats, chickens. The only thing I buy is onions and condiments, many of which I bought in bulk for those with long expiry dates. The problem is Nigerians do not think and do not make any effort at positive innovation. They just sit and complain and complain and complain. Even as fuel is expensive, how many have thought to save up to buy bicycles and use this as a made of transport just as is done in Tokyo and Utrecht? Feeding a family is a conscious decision which should be made by EVERY MAN worth his salt. It is DANGEROUS to ride bicycles in many cities in Nigeria. Let's be honest when we offer solutions. In many Nigerian cities, even pedestrians cannot walk comfortably on their paths, na bicycle riders go dey comfortable? The farming you have done is wonderful. Unfortunately, farmers in Zamfara, Borno, and Benue would beg to disagree. Youths in Enugu cooperated to open a rice farm only for Fulani herdsmen to destroy everything. Sometimes, I wonder why Nigerians sound so heartless considering the number of times they are seen in churches and mosques. During the last months of Jonathan till the early years of Buhari's first tenure, MANY Nigerians invested in farming. There were threads upon threads of Nairalanders who invested up to 10 million in various areas of agri-business. Ten million naira in 2014-2017. What happened? Fulani herdsmen ransacked farms and slaughtered people across Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Edo, Ogun, Enugu etc. What did fellow Nigerians do? They kept mum. For people who claim to be so religious and godly, many Nigerians tend to be so wicked, cruel and hypocritical. |
