A new MIUI 12 update has reached the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro. The update should be an encouraging sign for the handsets that remain on MIUI 11, like those on the European and Russian branches of MIUI.

Xiaomi is continuing the MIUI 12 rollout for the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Earlier this month, MIUI 12 reached the Redmi Note 8 Pro on the global and Indonesian branches of MIUI with V12.0.2.0.QGGMIXM and V12.0.1.0.QGGIDXM, respectively. Xiaomi has not rolled out its latest OS upgrade to all Redmi Note 8 Pro handsets yet, though. The Chinese company has been testing some builds on the Mi Pilot program, for example, along with the likes of the Pocophone F1.

Now, Xiaomi has begun issuing a new Beta Stable update to select Redmi Note 8 Pro handsets. According to a Mi Community post, the new update is only available for devices that have been enrolled on the Indian branch of MIUI. However, the release of a new MIUI 12 update, albeit a Beta Stable one, is encouraging for Redmi Note 8 Pro models on other branches of MIUI. Currently, the European and Russian versions of the Redmi Note 8 Pro are yet to be upgraded to MIUI 12.

Previously, Xiaomi had tested V12.0.0.3.QGGINXM on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. That update was rolled back, but now the company has moved onto V12.0.1.0.QGGINXM. A Nigerian woman, identified as Mrs. Chizoba Eke, has been rescued alive after spending three days in a well in Igwuruta, Ikwerre area of Rivers State.

According to reports, the mother was thrown into the well by a suspected kidnapper, who also abducted her child and left her for dead.

A source said she was rescued after military personnel arrested the suspected kidnapper on his way to an unknown location with the child.

“He told them where the woman was, thinking she was dead, but on getting there, they discovered that she was still alive,” the source added.

A man who denied raping an 11-year-old girl and threatened to arrest her and her family members was exposed by CCTV footage.

The 30-year-old man allegedly assaulted the 11-year-old girl last Wednesday, August 13, when she went to use a convenience room. She emerged minutes later crying and saying she had been abused by the suspect.

However, the suspect, simply identified as Jomaph, denied it and threatened to take legal steps.

But a CCTV camera installed by a neighbour for business reportedly exposed him in the act, The Nation reports.

Police spokeswoman Onome Onowakpoyeya confirmed the incident on Tuesday August 18, noting that she was yet to get an official report on the incident.

“The incident happened,” she said, adding, “They said, initially, the man denied, until they brought the CCTV footage and he owned up.”

A Nigerian woman identified as Damilola Osilulu, has said they she beats her husband because he orders her around on how she should live her life, adding that she can’t take his nonsense.

Testifying before Chief Henry Agbaje, the President of the court, Damilola countered her husband’s accusation, claiming that her husband complains a lot and also makes senseless demands from her.

She said: “Sometimes, Akinkunmi orders me to do senseless things and I don’t obey him. However, if I see wisdom in his demands, I try as much as possible to come down to his level.

“If I can’t take his nonsense, I hit him straight away because Akinkunmi feels he is the husband, and that he is also lord over me,” she said.

Akinkunmi, The Husband said he filed the divorce suit to bring an end to his wife’s domination over his affairs.

He said: “My lord, Damilola does not want me to have a say in the house as she challenges my authority. If I ask her to do anything, she questions my authority and violently attacks me.

“This is to the extent that people keep coming to our matrimonial home for settlement of rift every now and then. Only God knows what would have happened if I had reacted to her frequent attacks against me. Enough of Damilola’s nagging; I cannot continue to stand her disrespect. In ruling, Agbaje prevailed on the couple to exercise more patience. He advised relatives of both parties to do the needful by settling the matter. Agbaje then adjourned the case until Aug. 31 for judgment.

President Muhammadu Buhari during his 2019 campaign promised that he would not disappoint Nigerians if he won Saturday’s presidential poll.

The Imo State police command has arrested a traditional ruler and 7 others for allegedly kidnapping a police inspector and others in Imo State.

The traditional ruler, Eze Andrew Okwuegbunwa of Uba -Agwa autonomous community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, was yesterday, August 3, paraded alongside his cousin, a pastor and others for allegedly kidnapping one police inspector, Oscar Mbaeri and Louis Obodo all from same community.

Other victims of the gang, according to the State police Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede who briefed newsmen on the development yesterday, are : Chigozirim Festus, from Egwelu Atta, Njaba, Anyanwu Amarachi and Desmond Okonkwo.

According to the CP, the gang at different locations in Owerri, successfully kidnapped their victims but they were not lucky enough to escape from the hot chase of the Anti – kidnapping Unit of the command who got a hint of their operation.

During the chase , the suspects were forced to abandon three of their victims and their operational vehicle , a Lexus RX330 SUV with registration number (Edo) URM -40 EL but escaped with two victims.

However, few months later, according to the commissioner, SARS operatives arrived the scene and recovered the abandoned vehicle.

A painstaking investigation by a combined team of the SARS and the Anti- Kidnapping Unit on July 28 later led to the arrest of the 59-year-old King, who has since confessed to be the owner of the car.

According to the CP, investigation has revealed that the monarch has constantly made available his vehicle for the gang operation.

Akinmoyede further disclosed that from investigation, it was learnt that the monarch was given N3 million from the N7. 5 million ransom collected from their victims to replace his damaged car.

When newsmen accosted the monarch to hear his own side of the report, he confessed hiring his vehicle to the gang and receipt of the money.

The police also arrested the spiritual father of the gang, pastor Caleb Agu, a 42-year-old cleric from Umuoni – Agwa. They also arrested a cousin to the monarch, Ebenezer Obioha, 38 and his pregnant wife, Ogechi Obioha a graduate of accountancy from Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri believed to be their cook and banker.

Africa’s largest retail chain, Shoprite, announced on Monday that it is considering divesting from its Nigerian retail entity, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria, the owners of Shoprite Supermarket Nigeria.

Shoprite Nigeria operates about 26 outlets across the country and employs about 2000 employees who are 99% Nigerians. A divestment means it will sell its holdings to another investor who will continue to run the business.

According to the company, it has taken a decision to leave “following approaches from various potential investors” looking to invest in the Nigerian entity. The group also said the decision is in line with its “re-evaluation of the Group’s operating model in Nigeria” one of the 15 countries where it currently operates.

Shoprite also confirmed it has initiated a formal process to sell its entire stake in the Nigerian entity or a majority stake.

Why the exit?
Shoprite’s explanation of its intention to divest from its Nigerian operations appears to be anchored on its investment expectation and operating environment. However, there could be more to it.

Firstly, Nigeria is a highly competitive space, where retail is the survival of the fittest. Following Shoprite’s foray into Nigeria in 2002, the retail chain disrupted Nigeria’s retail space giving ordinary Nigerians a taste of what it feels to shop with family and friends. But the fairy tale was not going to last forever. Previous retail outlets like Park n Shop rebranded and injected significant funds in their operations and business expansion. Park n Shop rebranded to Spar and has 14 outlets across the country. It only makes sense for them to divest having held on to the Nigerian operations for almost two decades.

Shoprite also competes with homegrown retail outlets especially in Nigeria’s commercial city, Lagos State. Retail outlets like Ebeano, Citydia, and Adiba are now household names that are expanding rapidly across the state. There are also several neighbourhood supermarkets in the nooks and cranny of Nigeria’s commercial capital piling pressure on Shoprite’s market share. Shoprite does not disclose revenues from its Nigerian operations.

Shopping is also going online as evidenced by the growth in online shopping since COVID-19 hit Nigeria. Jumia, one of Nigeria’s largest online retail outlets, revealed lower earnings in the first quarter of 2020. However, the company is optimistic of higher revenue growth in Q2, on the back of the COVID-19 lockdowns. Jumia had earlier noted that “we are seeing unprecedented demand to join the Jumia platform, especially for named brands. We believe those dynamics will help accelerate the shift toward online.”

Local competitors like Spar and Ebeano already offer online shopping experiences and deliver goods to your doorstep. Shoprite’s business model relies heavily on physical store visits.

As internet services become faster and cheaper, more Nigerians will rely on e-commerce to meet their shopping needs. Jumia has often struggled in this space and remains unprofitable. However, gravitation towards online shopping is inevitable and only those who have the capital and know-how will come out winners.

Jumia’s competitor in this space, Konga, was also recently acquired by Zinnox. Konga was then merged with another Nigerian retail giant Yudula. Interestingly, Konga’s model includes a combination of online and brick and mortar. The company has since been acquiring warehouses across the country as delivery points for its retail expansion drive.

Nigeria’s harsh operating environment is also another major challenge Shoprite faces. The Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, through the CBN, has focused on supporting locally made goods by banning forex availability for the importation of local substitutes. This has negatively impacted the number of products Shoprite can sell and how many new shelves it can create per floor space. It also creates supply chain challenges, especially with locally produced goods.

Note that supermarkets sell on very thin margins. Therefore, the more products they can sell the higher the operating profits. Taxes are also higher and Nigeria’s susceptibility to exchange rate devaluation is also a major challenge. The company makes money in Naira and must convert to dollars before converting back to Rands.

In 2017, when Nigeria last faced a currency crisis, Shoprite explained that it has about Rand 2.3 billion in cash locked up in Angola and Nigeria due to currency restrictions (inability to repatriate their money on time). Information reaching Nairametrics from traders suggest most foreign-owned investments in Nigeria are also facing “restrictions” due to limited liquidity in the NAFEX window.

Shoprite’s less talked challenge is its Legal Issues. In 2011, Nigerian company A.I.C Limited (the Claimant), which is owned by Chief Henry Akande, issued a summons against Shoprite South Africa and its Nigerian subsidiary for an alleged breach of a joint venture agreement (the JV Agreement) allegedly concluded in 1998. The company took Shoprite to court claiming it breached on an agreement to set up the Nigerian arm of the business.

The Federal High Court then ruled in favour of AIC and awarded damages of $10 million against Shoprite in 2017. Shoprite appealed the judgment in the appeal court and lost again earlier in 2020. It is unclear if Shoprite has any plans to take the matter up to the Supreme Court. Could this be another reason why the owners are deciding to divest?

Whatever the reason is, officially, it perhaps makes sense for the company to exit its Nigerian operations in the light of the points mentioned above. Its Nigerian entity is worth 1.1 billion Rands (N24 billion) per its financial statements and could be worth more when the sale is eventually consummated.
