for your last point, it's not exclusive to Africa. Messi has never won conmebol player of the year despite winning copa America in 2021. Same for UEFA. Unless it's a world cup, most player of the year awards are decided by exceptional individual performance.
Simple. That's why the last awards looked like a scam, despite Vinicius's brilliance and performance.

[As much as people are criticizing carraghah, objectively he voiced the thoughts of most European judges, journalists and agents regarding Afcon. To Africans, afcon is a big tournament but to the European judges and agents, afcon isn’t a major tournaments in the rank of a World Cup, EU or champions league and all the backlash wouldn’t change it. This is a tournament that, Egypt won thrice in a row and none of its players won the APOY during that period.
That is why their ignorance has now been exposed. Before now, European clubs weren't proud enough to showcase the exploits of their International players in Afcon, but times have changed now, except for those sticking to live in the past. A tournament with over 2 billion viewers can never be looked down upon again; that era is gone.

The bolded is not necessarily true. Many asylum seekers end up relying on some form of benefits for most of their lives and many immigrants end up paying a small fraction in income tax over their working lives compared to other immigrants or residents.

That's why many countries are placing a greater value on "highly skilled"/earning migrants or those who can afford to donate invest millions to the economy , whilst also acknowledging their need for "low skilled" labour. It's a balancing exercise.
We are saying the same thing! It’s not free after all.

100% a major tournament.

My pick out is the the context.

He said it's not big enough to decide Balon D'Or against EUROS and Copa and I see the light.

Not in terms of quality but it's lack of equivalent prestige due to its timing and double jeopardy.

But in hindsight, Jamie Carragher has just boosted the prestige of the tournament.

There'll be a lot of emotional voting this Balon Dor and it will take a miracle for Salah not to win it.
You see now! Help us to thank him o e do well 😂

The good thing is that it has shattered any pretences of ideology associated with (non humanitarian) residency/citizenship.

It's an open market with a clear price on the goods (although certain people love to change the terms midway). You can pay 5M there or go elsewhere and pay however much over 5/6/10 years of working and paying taxes.

Pay the price and get what you’ve paid/worked for. Nobody’s doing you a favour.
It has never been about that, it’s always been transactional. Just Keep paying into our system either one-off or over time! Even the so called illegals, asylum or refugees are all still going to pay their own 5m in instalments over time.

You know why California is a sanctuary for the so called illegals? The state suddenly realise the huge billions of dollars in taxes remitted by the so illegal workers. How can you explain America collecting taxes from those who used their legs to cross into the country. That tells the entire story.

In typical British speak, manytimes it's not what is said that matters, but what is not said.

What he was saying was that we who were born westerners are not chorusing about western salvation, it's you who came as a visitor that's more interested in saving us. I.e being more Catholic than the Pope. Going ahead to insinuate she was being hypocritical and only doing it to remain relevant. That jab wouldn't have hit if it was Nigel in question- folks might even acuse Keir of not taking the concerns of average British people seriously.

I wouldn't say he was racist but I can see the angle - some might insinuate that he meant she wasn't western enough to drive such narrative.

I've seen Nigel do similar with James Cleverly on a Reform campaign speech - he was basically asking where he got that name from i.e the name was too English sounding for someone of Mr Cleverlys look. Even the audience were taken aback only for Nigel to then say he was joking.
You know why? because Nigel is a right wing politician. If the PM was also someone leaning to the right, many would have seen it differently but because kemi herself leans to the right and it is too rare to assume left wing politicians throwing such jabs not many will see it that way. Kemi’s grandstanding too has helped PM in a little way to land it successfully without raising eye brows. 😂

The brave, straight-talking Kemi Badenoch had another catastrophe at PMQs today, and ended up complaining to daddy the Speaker about Starmer being patronizing when he dismissed her flimsy questions (even the Spectator said they were ineffective) as 'a desperate search for relevance' from someone who had 'cast herself as the saviour of western civilisation.'

You'd almost feel sorry for her...until you remember how she reffered to care workers as butt wipers.

It looks like her real value lies in her ability to provide entertainment, and she's doing well at that, to be fair.
That was a coded racist jab from the prime minister, and for the first time, I felt some sympathy for her, but I hope she got the message to stay in her lane but what do I know sef make I mechonu!

The issue with Afcon just like the World Cup you may have like 5 teams who are at their peak same period so it becomes an issue of survival and luck with referees. How can you imagine the Eagles beaten by Cameroon at the national stadium in 2000. Both teams were too a-washed with the best of African players in that era. Same thing with the last Afcon, Morocco, Senegal, DRC, Mali, any of those countries could have won it.

What's all this brit this, brit that talk.

I gave example of UCL.
There's also Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 who no longer take lengthy breaks. Close 24th resume Jan 3.

And who's asking you to compete with them?

And when I say attention
There's difference between hearing someone and listening to someone.

After attention, we seek prestige.
What prestige again do you need when the clubs now publicly celebrate the return of their players from the competition. The thing you’re looking am not even sure cos you have even admitted above that Afcon is expanding so what next? The clubs should relocate all their players to Africa to watch Afcon?

Trending is not my goalpost here brother.
The AFCON hit a record 2bn views last year just 3bn less than this year's euros so we are definitely expanding.

I'm not talking audience, I'm talking attention and prestige.

Eric Chelle's meme from last year is as big as any image from EUROS and that wasn't even the most iconic picture from the tournament, so no doubting popularity.
We scored exact number of goals as euros, so no doubting entertainment.
Morocco set a new record at WC 22, so no doubting quality.

Give us the attention and prestige this growth deserves
You have the attention already, you’re the one one thinking it’s not enough cos you feel the entire world should shut down for the tournament. Already some leagues even have Christmas break that period. The Brits I know are very haughty people and don’t bend easily cos that’s their character so are you suggesting we go into war with them to have our way? The epl is business, Afcon too is business they can continue to coexist.

"EPL not like some other European League" brother the whole football world doesn't care anymore.

FIFA is rescheduling your tournament to house a club world cup that nobody likes. Can they try that for the EUROS or Copa América?

The UCL with the new format saw games played on 21st January, first time in history. Not dead-rubber. Games that decide your European fate.

2025 AFCON despite starting earliest we have ever seen in December will finish January 18th.

That's 3 DAYS BETWEEN playing against Senegal in final and playing Bayern Munich for a place in round of 16.

Where's the relevance of the tournament?

Typical victim mentality of its me against the world. Brother it's you against yourself.
Curb your black supremacy.
This is not true, the epl was on side by side with Afcon this year and still Afcon was trending in the uk. You’re still living in the past.

With the way European clubs now publicly celebrates their players return from Afcon, that’s shows a significant shift from how the competition is now viewed. Even cynics like caragher can’t change that perspective for the clubs.

The thing is about racial tone. It is normal for the Portuguese, Spaniards and South Americans.

Remember Bernardo posting a racial toned meme to Benjamin Mendy. They are friends. Bernardo Silva can never be racial to Mendy. However, the reception by the public was loud. He was slammed.

Suarez is definitely not a racist. He was team mates with the likes of Kolo Toure, Sturridge and Sterling. But, calling Evra NEGRITO (Ni88a) had a repulsive reception.

I think Romeu had a similar issue. Their not racist but coming from a different culture where blacks are not responsive to this issue, they have to adjust their tones.
If you ever call a Pakistani ‘paki’ it’s seen as racially offensive. Everyone should be guided.

Move this to summer and it improves the quality of the players, quality of the tournament, appeal of the tournament.

"Like how are you a major tournament if other tournaments refuse to stop for you?
Don't they stop for other continental tournaments?"

Unbeknownst to the person that actually it's the other way round every single other tournament stops for domestic football to conclude first.

But father Africa, playing a game invented by the white man, is too big to stop for the white man.
It can’t be moved to summer, CAF has tried it and it didn’t work. Know this and know peace after all African players are not good enough in the eyes of European coaches so why are they always complaining if they can get better players elsewhere. Do African players beg to be recruited by European coaches Abi which kind wahala be this or will football suddenly stop being played in Africa if African players don’t play in Europe? As long as there’s quality in Africa we will continue to see players from the continent in Europe no matter what time Afcon is played.

As for globally big enough, that will require all the currencies of the African countries to be strong and since Africa did not create the global financial system then it will never ever be big enough because the global financial system ensures that most or all black African countries have bad currencies..
Oga in my church here in the uk, on the Sunday of the Afcon final my Oyinbo pastor announced in church wishing Nigerias all the best, some bars and clubs had viewing centres with Afcon in their schedule, at work they talked about the competition. Exactly my point.

World Cup was held in Southern hemisphere because it is their coolest period, meaning a compromise is possible.

So why can't you just continue this, AFCON in southern hemisphere until the Northern hemisphere is rich enough to afford AC stadium like Qatar?

No? AFCON must be held in northern hemisphere because that's where all the footballing nations are. Isn't that stubbornness?

"which actually favoured the Europeans" my good man, it favoured the whole world. Even Africans cannot play in that heat.

Qatar cannot host in summer, but they hosted in a period (November) which is the same as West Africa's hottest.

"The tournament is for Africans", but you think holding it in a period where you're worried about winning league title and progressing from your Afcon group in the same month favours the player.

That you always have to choose between country and club. That you always have to give 50% for country so you don't return injured?

"Has that stopped European clubs?"

Fergie, one of the most dominant managers in history refused Africans just for this reason.
Pep likely same.
Mourinho who loves Africans fought Mikel over AFCON.
Klopp called it a small tournament over this reason.

But yes, it doesn't play on the minds of clubs.
It’s left for any African player to decide whether he wants to play in Afcon or not or is it that compulsory to play for the national team? I don’t think so. If as an African player you feel your European club is more important then go ahead with your club. We’ve seen so many African players do this including Nigerian players.

Your point that Afcon should be held in the southern hemisphere of Africa to please Europe is baseless, that can never be the true African spirit. We are a liberated people and it’s in our own will to decide what’s best for us, call it stubbornness, that’s anyone’s cup of tea.

I hope you know the same Mikel had issues with Conte over appearance in olympics and not even Afcon, was olympics an Afcon event? I don’t think so. The same Man U that refused to buy African players where are they today? Are they not lining up to buy osihmen now? You see now!

When you say fixed? Changing from 12:30pm to 3PM kick off is not as significant as January to June. So nothing big is done for Asia or America.

The weather issue is true, but this is 2025.

Qatar's highest temperature during World Cup is hotter than Ivory Coast in off-season.

And since you're going the world cup route, how did South Africa host a one of the best world cups in history during the off-season?

Talking about world revolving around Europe. We need to accept some truths.

The world revolves around USA.
When it comes to manufacturing - China
When it comes to football - Europe.

Stop trying to fight it. Europe is where football lives and they dictate the football calender. Let's accept that and adapt.
The World Cup in South Africa was in winter (June/July is winter in South Africa) which actually favoured the Europeans, there was no way Qatar will host the World Cup in June as even the Europeans can’t cope with the extreme heat.

The Afcon is a tournament for African players and the timing must favour the players first before any other party including Europe. If Europe can’t adapt that’s their problem. Has that even stopped European clubs having African players? I don’t think so.

No until we move to off-season. June/July

European football is where football peaks and we have to accept it.

You can't be dragging prime time with European leagues, you'll always lose.

The quality is surely there. What we need now is attention
The off season can’t work because it’s out of human control due to weather. It’s left for the Europeans to adapt like they did for the World Cup in Qatar which was held towards the end of the year. The world does not and cannot revolve around Europe alone. Are you aware some European league fixtures these days are now fixed or adjusted to accommodate viewers in Asia and other time zones now, that’s the world we live in now. Folks like carragher are still living in the past.
