I guess I still have to be happy they didn't outrightly deny promising the bridges but then I become sad because billions will be borrowed and looted to build the bridge

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How Should I Have Answered This Interviewer's Question? by Gold45(f): 12:35pm On Nov 29, 2019
MisterJeph:
Hello Nairalanders.

I attended an interview yesterday, it wasn't my first interview but it was the first time a question caught me off guard. I was always prepared before interviews and do my research on the hiring company. But yesterday, when the interviewer asked me; "are you creative?, (I would have just answered yes, and he would have asked me what creative things I've done) my brain went blank for a second and I started looking for a suitable answer.

Don't get me wrong, I have creative ideas, but have I really done something creative? I can act, write plays, but my guess was the interviewer wanted my answer to be in line with the position I was applying for, so I started fumbling for the right answer, after a while uneasiness began to appear on the face my interviewer, apparently I was wasting too much time on this one question. So I let out only thing bouncing up and down in my mind; "I can act sir, if knowing how to act counts as being creative".

I was applying for a bank job for crying out loud, not auditioning for a movie role. How does acting correlate with banking?

Over to you guys. How should I have done justice to the question?
First say yes of course with a smile while buying your brain 10 extra seconds
When you're asked in what way? Answer in many ways (extra 3seconds)
For example: blah blah blah (whatever answers your smart brain has cooked up)

While every interviewer has something in mind, they most likely want to see traces of being able to do your job effectively and being able to do swift troubleshoot when the need arises.

While there's no wrong answer per se, a smart answer should tell how good you are at creating quick fixes to resolve crises or an example of how you broke routine in a good way at a time of need.
Crises could be unusual customer conflict, inter-staff conflicts etc.
A creative person is very calculative, sees ahead and knows how to smartly avert danger.

Hope u understand

Good evening all. I just have to comment on this. The OP never mentioned that its because of the children that's why the brother is earning a low pay. Even with wife alone that money is extremely poor. Now back to the discussion on having children its God who gives children and he alone can decide if its going to be single or multiples. What if these children are triplets. What happens.
My thoughts though.

Thats exactly what some people kept saying till they gave birth to 15 children

@topic, 29,500 is workable if you can be strict with your finances. House rent: not nore than 85k annually.
School fees per child must not be more than 20-25k per term,
Wife must have a business, its a must and the wife should cover home expenses, toileteries, and support the husband with the feeding.

Most importantly, husband and wife must have a weekly/monthly contribution they subscribe to.
Lastly, no more children please angry

Thats the sad tale of Nigerians and the Nigerian food/household market.

Milk has totally lost taste. in those days you will smell your neighbours cup of tea from the next house. but now you can not get such milk no matter how much you have in your wallet.

I remember when B29 soap came out. it was the first of its kind with superb smell and quality. but now, it turns to PASTE if u leave it in water for 3 mins.

Back then, you dare not use more than 2 Maggi cubes for a pot of anything you are cooking. but now....

even Coca-Cola now tastes like SH!T

quality of goods is going down, price and demand is going WAY UP.

Everybody has forgotten that tea used to have one kain nice aroma like that. Nice to know someone also noticed it.
We go survive.

How perfect was/is his response? He's free to declare whatever but that doesn't negate the fact that he's having some issues in his marriage right now which he wants to genuinely resolve, i mean that's why he put it out here to seek opinions..

I am nt wishing u breakup bro, just telling u that failure to resolve this her insatiable thirst will definitely lead to the marriage crashing,i knw what i am saying.U aren't earning that much and yet ur wife cannot be satisfied with the little u have, mehn,u need serious prayerv and counselling.u may think am spewing threats or trash,bt i am a man speaking with experience.

Above is the response he rejected.
Like I said, most responses on social media are very blunt and logical and many times, we miss it because we don't know all the details. One very little thing we omitted may make a lot of difference in our judgement if only we knew. But still, once we read the initial post, we've already had a certain mindset about the whole issue.
e.g, someone has a chronic cheat as a wife, what do you expect nairaland to say to the guy about d mother of four? Divorce her etc, meanwhile the woman was under a spell by her employee. The guy was lucky enough to jam a real pastor that told him the source of the problem, the man got his wife to see the pastor, the pastor prayed and the woman was back to factory settings. If he had done the smart and obvious thing, he will have ruined his marriage of 13yrs. Im not saying this is always true but, it happens.

My marriage will not crash IJN, I repeat that you bro

Perfect response.
We all need to be wary of the kind of advices we open ourselves to on social media.
Social media mostly gives us the most rational and logical answer and solution but if you follow these "logical" solution, you might as well kiss your marriage goodbye.

Never forget that the best marriage on earth is the marriage between two fools

I didnt say that you should let your wife ride you, I mean you have to let many things pass.
For this case, I advice you plan your monthly finances, goals you're saving towards, expenses etc with her. Women are good managers but we also love spending other peoples money. But that doesnt mean we would spend our children's future too. I believe that once sh understand the flow of cash, she'll appreciate you and even help you save more.
Pls o, dont cut off her pay for two whole months, thats war. You're the head of the family but soft words will profit you more in this case than show of strength.

Madam plz, for goodness sake, u said you edited this cv for an SSCE holder..... Its your job to correct his mistake(s). Staff in plural form is still staff, please accept your mistake and move forward...This is not about knowing a JD than the employee, this is plain English! The same English u were shouting on top of your voice that we should learn if we want to work in a place where English language is spoken... This is just for you to understand that humans can make mistakes, and you forget, before you posted this ' lecture note' that you are a human yourself, you committed an error, and you are being so adamant in correcting it, begs the question how you got to ur 'exalted position'.....(pardon me).

That's the reason, i would not totally disagree with amicable, because sometimes recruiters as yourself refer people to companies that other unemployed graduates can beat hands down.....And for your generalization, please DO NOT make the mistake of thinking every job seeker is the same..... Thank you

As much as I decided to come here to be of assistance to those who feel I have something to offer, I will not appreciate any degrading comment of any kind even if no offense is intended.

I never generalized, I simply indicated the holes the majority fall into.
Show me a line where I used the phrase 100% of the graduates or all the graduates.

Do work on your interpersonal skills and anger management.

I went for an interview in an oil firm and the recruiter asked me to tell him more about myself, then i started

I am butanep from delta state, studied Geology from University of Benin, an ICT expert in the area of data base management. I am a dynamic fellow because my discipline has exposed me to different areas of life and career. I am a certified safety officer because safety comes first before any work is done effectively.

I have a basic idea in the application of geological softwares like petrel and powerlog. I had the opportunity to use them during my industrial training at NNPC. I was able to generate a 3D seismic model on olumu well of the Niger delta basin and also generate a correlation panel to other wells in the basin. I did a paper presentation on the fault history of the Niger delta basin and was given credit for the work. I have plans to publish the work very soon.

I am one fellow eager to learn because continuous learning is the key to a successful career. i want to keep developing myself until my impact is felt in the petroleum industry and the Nigeria economy. I am an indispensable tool which any company or organization will love to hire

Thanks sire.

The man laugh and said i taught you know everything about your field. I was down for a bit but didn't allow it to kill my confidence. i asked that's the little i can say within the shortest possible time. When i wanted to talk more, he said i should stop. some recruiters can be morale killer i swear.

Gold45,Aude and the others in the house. please can you tell me what is wrong about the introduction and make possible corrections . Thanks

Like I earlier replied someone, I say somethings or ask some questions just to gauge your response. The look on your face alone can be all the answer I need. Then each HR / Recruiter has different things that work for them. To me, I'll say he was trying to test how you handle rude remarks and the likes. Each job has a lot of unspoken requirements. My sis for e.g hates too much questions. If I were to screen her for a position that comes with a lot of customer interaction, I won't pass her for it. I can deliberately be rude, ask off point, waste her time etc just to see how she would react when its a customer. I know she would really hold herself knowing I can decide her fate or not but those split seconds show just how confident, patient or angry she is. I'll bet money that she would explode or give a customer that tries that a cold attitude.
Hope you get where I'm coming from.

Secondly, when I ask you to tell me about yourself, I mean about yourself not your career history. I like to interview people in a relaxed atmosphere. Most times, its over skype as many aren't in Nigeria.
So, its different stokes for different folks.

No I am not in HR. I was once unemployed and it took a lot of soul searching, observing people and being open to criticisms to get me to where I am today. I really do like your posts and I am happy that you didn't feel I was encroaching on your territory. I am certainly open to networking and I am willing to pass on my experiences and advice to anyone who is willing to listen. I don't consider myself a pro but I think I have something to bring to the table.

Im pretty surprised you aren't a HR.
Territory keh, I have a million fishes to fry. Any extra hand is welcome.
Once I am a bit free, I'll contact you so we can talk more. (may be in a months time or next year)

I understand that it can be frustrating for jobseekers and some HR personnel can be very mean. In terms of aptitude test they are testing your suitability for the job. They are also testing your ability to learn and adapt to different situations. At work you meet challenges frequently and if the panel appears to be hostile it is because they are testing you. They want to see how you deal with pressure. Are you a confident person? Practise and develop your interview skills with friends and family members. Also dispose of that mindset that HR managers are not doing you a favour. It is better to have an HR manager on your side rather than against you.

Thanks for covering up for me.
I sense experience in your replies.
Are you a HR?
Are you open to networking?
