TheGoodJoe: Oh Please. Echiejile had a history of poor games until he lost his place in the Super Eagles. Do not try to make him the best thing since Celestine Babayaro. Props to him for the much improvement and we hope it continues.
Do not overblow it. Keep in mind, Rohr worked with Lizarazu. If he says we need reinforcement, we need reinforcement.
If the Boss says it the fish, you eat the fish. Kindly point out the poor games Elderson have had for the Super Eagles. For every poor game you point, I will point 2 equally bad ones from Mikel. Elderson have been a great servant for the national team, irrespective of what anyone thinks. He has been ever present in all the famous victories we have enjoyed the past 8-10 yrs. He's not the most flashy player in the team zthat could probably be the reason you want to throw him under the bus. And Rohr have never said he's not satisfied with Elderson's contributions. |

TheGoodJoe: If the others mentioned are good enough, they deserve a shot. As for Elderson, one good game in recent games for the Super Eagles does not cut it for me. I hope he maintains his form but if he was that prolific, Rohr will not think we need reinforcement.
The call for Fabian Senninger is not about dual Nationality. I wonder why you are oblivious to the other points I made why he deserves a shot. Unless Fabian’s dual Nationality gives you problem, it baffles me why looking in is giving you stress. It was not just one good game for Echiejile. For goodness sake he had that good game in our biggest game of 2016, against Mahrez who was one of the best players in Europe last season. I recall before the game where Mickael2 made a sweeping statement that Goulahm was far better than anything we had. It became a paradox of some sort, when the game started and the highly rated Goulahm couldn't keep pace with Moses. Moses steam rolled him like a tornado while Iwobi completed the insult with a rainbow flick over his head. While all these was going down, the much maligned Echiejile kept the best player on the pitch in his back pocket. Rohr wants competition for Echiejile, because currently, he has none in Madu. Echiejile is currently indispensable in that team, you can take to it the bank. On Junior, I have a problem about inviting an amateur player to try out with the Super Eagles. Am sure you were one of the who couldn't make sense of Keshi inviting a home based amateur player in the twilight of his tenure. The Nigerian press and fans almost hit the streets to protest but because Fabian is an Oyibo who plays amature football in Germany, its cool to invite him. Where is the justice in that? |

TheGoodJoe: When we are talking of Fabian, it not just about developing him. Rohr hinted that we lack quality full backs. Do you think if Rohr believed our full back roles were covered, we would have a debate on Fabian?
This reminds me of the Oliseh Argument when he said Keshi should only invite players playing in top leagues, neglecting the fact that we did not have players in top League.
We have little mediums to check our promising talents. The best we can do is select the most promising and most likely to make it to camp.
Until we can create other mediums, Rohr will take a close look at them. For me, this issue of lack of quality full backs is over stated. Elderson Echiejile is no slouch. You don't play for Braga, Monaco, Rennes if you're not good. Against Algeria, we all saw how he shut down APTY Mahrez almost effortlessly. At right back, Shehu is there. We saw him at the Olympics, I don't think I saw a better right back in that tournament. Do you really think Fabian will get ahead Shehu or even Musa Mohammed? Because Fabian has dual citizenship, he definitely must be good enough to get a look in. I haven't seen you make a case for Zarahedine Bello, Lukman Zakari, Funsho Gbamgboye to come train with the Eagles. Please discontinue this argument. Rohr have never been quoted talking about Fabian. Journalists are simply speculating Fabian could be the one Rohr is speaking of. |

Icon4s: You have said quite a lot from this post.
I so much agree with you on the issue of young players' invitation to the national team. It seemed I was alone on that argument for long but thank God other analysts are pointing it out. A player needs to break into his clubs first team first and play a couple of games from which the coach would assess him and decide whether he is worthy of a call up.
As for the U21 team proposal, the Europeans so much value this age grade competition. CAF can scrap the CHAN and replace it with the U21 competition and let the tourney be played at the end of the league season. The AYC can be made U19 and be played a year before the WYC. The U21 be played a year after the WYC with that there would be an easier progression into the U23.
What do you call it when Nigeria has won 5 U17 tourneys and yet we have only played in 2 U20 WC finals and not winning any. The transition from U17 to U20 is what is not there. But why is that we perform better at U23 than U20?- Another food for thought.
I have followed the game far well enough. I watched live the maiden edition of the U16/U17 world cup. I have over the years studied team selection for the U20 team two years after the U17. It was even U21 in the 80s and 90s. I think it became U20 from 1999 or there about.
Nigerian coaches have not gotten right at the U20 level. The only two coaches that got to the final-Samson Siasia and Tunde Disu understood the challenges/competition at that age grade. Look at the structure and composition of their teams.
I some time ago highlighted to this great house the failure of Chile '87. Shockingly Emmanuel Amuneke said he could not remember anything about that tourney. That tells a lot. Not because he was too young to remember (after all he was my senior in school by 4 years) but because he probably choose not to commit the event to memory. The selection of players for that U21 Tourney was the recipe for the catastrophe that followed. A group of boys played U16 in 1985. Two years after in 1987 they were playing U21. Mind you, a lot of those boys were 15 years in that 1985 it means they would be 17 in 1987. The oldest being 18yrs. I recall Thompson Oliha and Etim Esin were dratfted into Chile '87 squad but that was not enough. They were walloped 4-0 by Brazil, 2-0 by Italy and played 2-2 draw with Canada.
Tunde Disu took over the Flying Eagles in 1989. What he did was to select from the 1985 Eaglets who were 19 and 20 yrs old by then and the best of the 1987 Eaglets. He also added some players from the local league. That Flying Eagles squad in my opinion remains the best till date.
Players like : Nduka Ugbade, Jonathan Akpoborie, Taiwo Enegwea from the 1985 Eaglets. Dimeji Lawal, Philip Osondu, Christopher Nwosu, Bawa Abdulahi, Anthony Emeodofu and Peter Ogaba from the 1987 Eaglets. Others came from the local league: like Mutiu Adepoju (shooting star), Chris Ohenhen (Calabar Rovers), Samuel Elija (shooting stars), Tunde Charity (Bendel Insurance), Mike Onyemachara (First Bank), Jimoh Balogun (Julius Berger) among others including the goalies: Angus Ikechi and Emeka Amadi. Note that most of these boys were already professional players. A couple of the Eaglest graduates were already in European clubs. At least I recall Philip Osondu was in Anderlecht of Belgium. This was a matured U20 Team.
Looking at the Siasia's team of 2005. Kennedy Chinwo was the only player picked from the 2001 Eaglets because he was the only 15years old when the U17 tourney was played in 2001. The other were not eligible age-wise to play U20 in 2005. From the 2003 Eaglets: Isaac Promise, Chinedu Ogbuke-Obasi, John Obi Mikel, Solomon Okoronkwo, Kola Anubi and Ambrose Vanzekin. The other players came mostly from the local league: Taye Taiwo (Lobi stars), Onyekachi Apam (Enugu Rangers), Monday James (Bendel Insurance), Daddy Bazuaye (Bendel Insurance), Solomon Abwo (Enyimba), John Owoeri (Bendel Insurance), Sani Kaita (Kano Pillars), Dele Adeleye (shooting stars),Gift Atulewa (Bayelsa Utd) Olubayo Adefemi (Israel), Yinka Adedeji (Sweden) and Daniel Akpeyi (Gabros International). Those NPL boys, where no feeder team players. They were regulars in their team. I vividly recall a rampaging David Abwo during Enyimb's 2004/2005 CAF chmapions league campagne.
Manu Garba tried with his 2015 Flying Eagles. Firstly he called back the boys that failed the MRI. Players like: Wilfred Ndidi, Ifeanyi Mathew, Bernard Bulbwa, Ibrahim Alhassan, Abdul Mustapha( I always forget his name-the one u guys call picture boy). You could see the great input made by those boys. He also called Kingsley Sokari from the NPFL, Moses Simon from Gent and Enahoro-the goalie from MFM. However, majority of the team were still from his former 2013 U17 set up. By that time in 2015 majority of them were still academy players. Only Isaac Success, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon and Kingsley Sokari professional players. The squad was largely lacking in experience compared to the Tunde Disu's 1989 and Samson Siasia's 2005 squads.
Peeps who can recall from the U20 thread would remember how I lamented this deficiency in Manu's U20 squad.
Looking at the Amuneke's U20 squad. Amuneke I feel did not recognize the level of competition he would face. The team was made up 90% of his 2015 U17 players. The team was too young and greatly lacking in experience just like what happened with the Chile '87 boys. Well, Amuneke said he could not remember what happened at Chile '87 so no lessons learnt.
I have always said it that the U20 is for young professional players. If you go and parade academy players there talents will fail them where experience is needed. The Amuneke's U20 were playing passing game on a flooded pitch in Lagos while the Sudanese boys were playing long balls. Victor Osimhen scored Sudan's winning goal that day.
We need to really take the U20 age grade level more seriously. Of late we seem to be underrating the competition at that level. It was a pleasure to read through your post. We obviously share the same vision. If only Caf and the Nf shared the same vision. Sometimes I wonder what the job description of these Caf executive Committee members are. Many armchair analyst like us can do better job. Caf should integrate an U21 tournament into their calendar, also an expansion of the Caf champions league is long overdue, maybe an alliance with a few Arabian gulf countries to have their teams play in the Caf champions league could prove to be a master stroke. This will attract larger followership of the tournament and more TV money to participating clubs. The recent Chinese infiltration should be a food for thought to Africa. We must re-strategies. The Europeans have succeeded in developing a UEFA youth champions league while Africa still operates a half baked 8-team champions league, without an U19/U21 championship. In my opinion, Issa Hayatou cannot take Africa to next level. The status quo will remain intact if he's still there. |

TheGoodJoe:
It is not a waste if we are hunting for quality. Rohr is not satisfied with the full back situation. It is a key ingredient of his attacking play. Rohr is not going to make a guess list. He will call up those who will come to camp after careful deliberation.
We spent money camping different full backs that did not convince Rohr. Will we call that wastage? No. It is a continuous process. If Fabian Senninger can become top quality, investing money in camping him can not become a waste because the aim is to keep making our team stronger. You obviously missed my point. Yes, it makes sense to invite young players with the intention to expose them to international football and integrate those who are ready to the team. My point is that, the so called young players need to buy a ticket to be considered for such invites. Our national team is our pride. We can't have Junior who plays in the German amateur division for Hannover U19's to be invited for such expos. We are not in the mid 2000's where an Abbey George playing non-league football will be holding sway in our Super Eagles. The criteria should be that such player must have broken into his clubs first team to get such invite. Ovie Ejaria qualifies for such look in. The u21 team as suggested by Icon4s is a good one but funny enough, the Nff is downsizing the number of national teams in their portfolio due to cash crunch. Again, Caf should consider having an U21 championship like Europeans do. The game needs to develop further in Africa due to the world cup expansion. It's innovative having CHAN championship but the U21/19 championships will go along way in shapping talents from our continent. Further more, the Caf champions league and confederations cup format should be tweaked to meet the demands of the 21st century. An 8 team, 2 groups format in the Caf champions league is laughable. It looks like an amateur league structure. The Caf champions league format should be expanded to 16 team formate in a group of 4. We need to do what is necessary to raise the game in Africa. The extra world cup slots should count to our advantage. |

Icon4s: No. I get your point.
I was reacting to goldfish80's comparison with the Obaobona and Mba's case.
Obaobona and Mba started with ACFON Qualifying games, 4 games in a row. However, just a friendly for Fabian may not just be enough to get him into the Super Eagles. It just might be enough for Rohr to have an assessment of him.
Musa Mohammed played an AFCON qualifier against Tanzania and previously a friendly against Luxemburg. Both games he was impressive yet Rohr is still looking for a RB. That tells a lot about Rohr's choice of players selection especially in the defense. Even in a friendly game, its too soon to invite Fabian. Friendlies should act as tune up games for the main event like Afcon /World Cup qualifiers. A blend of Super Eagles players and those knocking really hard on the door of the team should execute such games. Friendly games shouldn't be for U19 trialists. Junior should wait for his time, if he gets into Hannover first team next season, then he has bought a ticket to be invited for such friendly games. |

Icon4s: That's not even the major reason.
Keshi had the privilege of starting his tenure with low profile games. I recall his first was against Rwanda. He prosecuted both legs with predominantly home base players. He was able to assess how relevant they would be in his team going forward. Our next game was against Liberia, another low profile opponent. With those four games Keshi improved the confidence level of those home boys. That made Keshi in return to have confidence in their abilities.
Fabian. You wan start the guy against Cameroun in the WC qualifiers? Friendlies are what they are: "friendlies". I am not completely ruling out the relevance of friendlies in assessing a player but its relevance is nothing compared to a grade A WC qualifiers.
CB position IMO is where we have the least problems. Ok, we have a first choice CB pairing of Balogun and Ekong. Omeruo another seasoned and experienced CB is in the team. We also have a Jamiu Alimi, one of the best CBs in the NPFL. If e had too much we still have Obaobona. Remember also there is one Kenedy Otigba, another seasoned defender waiting for a call-up.
Rohr should instead look for RBs and Central strikers for us.
cc: TheGoodJoe. Yes I remember keshi started playing relatively low profile games, although an Afcon qualifier is not too low profile in the grand scheme of things. My initial comment on logistics was informed by Keshi having the latitude to invite home based players and have them in camp for 2 - 3 weeks before the foreign players join. I think the home based players leave camp to play for their league teams and return immediately after league matches. Scarce resources can't be wasted on guys like Fabian who is not ready to start for the Super Eagles. Imagine wasting $8k in camp allowance, return ticket etc to just watch a junior trian. If a player is not ready to grab a spot in the Super Eagles, he should be left alone. Seaonsed pros like Larry Olarenwaju, Nwakaeme etc who are ready to own a place in the team aren't being invited, instead we waste money on juniors like Fabian to watch him train. It doesn't make sense to me. Sorry. |

TheGoodJoe: I am glad Rohr does not think like you. No one is asking for a babysitter. Check if he is good enough. Just as Keshi helped the likes of Mba and Oboabona professionally, finding a brilliant potential can help us mould another Star.
“Aside from Tyronne, we have found a player in Germany who was playing in the Bundesliga last year but has gone down on relegation," he continued.
“He is 20 years old. He told me it’s an honour for him to come to play for the country of his father, his mother is German.
“He is like Balogun, very quick and very good. Hopefully, he will come too.
“So now, we have the time to see them play in their clubs, speak and meet with them, bring them in a good condition in order to help us for the qualification.”
http://m.goal.com/s/en-ng/news/4110/nigerians-abroad/2017/01/05/31173462/rohr-confirms-tyronne-ebuehis-allegiance-to-nigeria?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fm%3Fq%3Dfabian%2Bsenninger%2Brohr
Keshi invited Obabona and Mba because it's easier to manage the contingency of calling a home based player. But with fabian, the FA has to pay for buisness class return ticket. The added cost which this incures isnt worth it just to watch an academy kid train. Why are you so sure Rohr was referring to Fabian? Am pretty sure Fabian didn't play in the Bundesliga last season. He hasn't even made an appearance in the Bundesliga 2 this season. |

What should I do? Copy and paste my last statement to you?
Is it every player invited to camp by Rohr that played for the Super Eagles?
Na wa.
Not all Players invited to Camp make the final squad list. The final Squad list is what you can call Super Eagles quality.
Is Fabian Super Eagles quality? Invite to camp and find out. No need wasting scarce resources to invite him over to find out if he has the quality. The first stage of his trial should be seeing him earn a place in his club's first team, not playing for Hannover U20's. When he makes the leap to the first team, then he has earned a spot to try out with the Super Eagles. Gernot Rohr is not running a day care to try out academy lads. |

Furthermore although winning games is not the complete test for football development it is still one of numerous indicator for football development.
My query is not to say he is not good enough when I saw him. I Watched him not specifically but generally and he was not a stand out player.
Then to go from that to National team in less than two years Hmmmmm. Well he's got a good agent.
His team mate at Nike academy a central defender was signed by Burnley and he is of Nigerian origin.
This forum is about information and opinions some even first hand. And pointing out the best prospects or what may be the best prospects.
By the way in my post about Burnley it may seem misleading I did not do match analysis for Burnley FC but myself and another party. Truth be told, from the few clips I've seen of him, he's a learner. I watched his game against Corinthians. If only Amuneke's team qualified for the AYC, he should have been trying out with the U20's. The Super Eagles should not be made for all comers. Guys we should be discussing about being ready for the SE are Moses Odubanjo and Dominic Iorfa. Especially Moses Odubanjo, he has the work ethic, mentality, grit and talent to add something positive to the super eagles. I hope he gets over his injuries worries soon, its heart breaking to see someone like that be out of action for so long. He does not deserve that. |

I cannot end my post without Hailing our National team captain and Chelsea Legend John obi mikel wish you all the best in China You have to consider Iwobi is a play maker who trives on quick touches and movements. Playing him with ball stoppers like Giroud and Ramsey will simply not work. It's like asking a sleek sports car to do the job of a tractor. As for his stamina, you have to Consider his age. tbaba1234: Recently, I read a report of a Ghanian Player signed by Andrelecht from Asante Kotoko. No trial!!
The best players in Nigerian's premier league are either signed by North African clubs or taken on trial to obscure leagues. It appears that there is a major problem with our league. I would argue that the best Nigerian players are not there. Ifeanyi Mathew was the best midfielder in the Nigerian league but was subjected to trials in Lillestorm, Obaje is one of the highest scorers but had to go on trial with Spartak Moscow.
When we had Manu's under 20 side play with our best league teams, it exposed the quality of our league. Kids were running rings around experienced professionals. I will disagree with your last paragraph. Npl teams don't pluck players from the sky. Those same academies in Lagos, Ibadan, Kaduna etc supply players to Npl clubs just like they do to various cadet teams. Players from those academies have 3 options, 1)get signed up by the Nigerian league clubs 2)get a contract abroad 3)hit the streets The Ghanaian example you gave is a one-off. They are in the same poo as Nigeria. The best player in Ghana last 2 seasons, signed Pro contract with a Malaysian club. I can't remember his name. I think we should concentrate and make our leagues better than looking for scouts to take our players out of the country. |

At the Olympics you fought everyone who called Sadiq out for being poor. You stood by him and defended him like he was your brother. Your 360° cycle have made me realise that you know deep down inside of you the truth in most topic of interest to you like Man city,Guardiola and Kelechi but you choose to defend just for the sake of it. I now understand you |

komekn: If you know the politics of money settlements and arrangement that goes on in most academies you will understand why.
City really don't have time to wait for you to develop they need success now not tomorrow. You obviously didn't catch the joke. |

safarigirl: a keeper's priority is to ensure balls don't get into his net. That is the main reason he's on that pitch, so all these things about footwork and distribution of balls, is he a keeper or a ballet dancer?
A goalie with these attributes who can't keep out goals is like a striker with good footwork and dribbling skills who can't score goals Seriously if goalkeepers must be ball jugglers, I wonder why Guardiola didn't play Ronaldinho or Deco in goal so they can play from the back. They were the 2 best players with the ball at their feet at Barca. |

Are you saying Pickford is better than Bravo with his feet? Or you just throwing names. Are you saying Pickford will distribute the ball better than Bravo? If he can not, I do not get why his name is here. Pickford is not even at Man city. I was responding to your enquiry about a young keeper who is good with his feet. My question is why will you commend Guardiola for poaching an experienced keeper but knock Rohr for going for experience. You haven't responded to my head to head comparism between Akpeyi and Alampasu's club form. |

TheGoodJoe:
Tell me two top quality young goalkeepers apart from ter Stegen better than Bravo with their feet. It seems you are forgetting that Guardiola joined City this season and the demand for keepers good with their feet just kicked off.
In the academy now, they are training the keepers on it. Angus Gunn talked about it too.
So Bravo is there because he is better, not experienced. Pickford the young Sunderland keeper is a superb keeper with good left foot. For the £200m pumped into the city academy, is there no keeper as decent as Pickford? |

safarigirl: I don't know why they won't even promote Angus Gunn properly, if Bravo can be first choice, Angus deserves a shot because Bravo is woeful by any standard The point am trying to make is that TheGoodJoe would defend Guardiola for spending alot to get an experienced goalkeeper but would frown at Rohr for choosing experience ahead of a crucial world cup qualifier. Am sure for all the qualities of Bravo, there is a young keeper in the academy Guardiola should have promoted. |

Note, I did not say younger but better. If a younger midfielder is better than Mikel, He should play ahead of Mikel. If we can not find a younger midfielder better than Mikel, Mikel should keep his position.
Not younger but better. Not experience but better. But Alampasu haven't kept a clean sheet all season for his 3 division Portuguese club. How can you compare him with a Psl player? club captain, with 2/3 clean sheets? What exactly makes you think Alampasu is better? |

TheGoodJoe: Bravo was the only top quality goalkeeper good with his feet Guardiola could land. If you followed the transfer news, Guardiola wanted Ter Stegen who is younger and less experienced than Bravo. Barcelona turned down the deal and preferred to sell the more experienced one.
Why?
Because ter Stergen is better.
Think better, not experience. So in Man city £200 million academy, there is no single 19yr old goalkeeper who is decent with his feet? |
