CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 8:44pm On Sep 24, 2019
lol. alright. let's drop the diplomatic "wake up call" tag for a second. Can you who presumably has a 9-5, honestly say that you dont talk down at a struggling entrepreneur or someone unemployed? In fact you may even believe that you are "helping the person" but will also feel better off and self righteous as you call them irresponsible for "not just getting a job."

There have been names for people who never ascribed to the 925 life, even as far back as primary sch. We called them NO FUTURE AMBITION.

In uni, most future 925ers assumed they would automatically be better off than those who missed class and got lower grades, because apparrently, office job awaited you once you get your first class. And the "I'm better than you" arrogance was always evident even then. Now those dropouts saw they wont make it with school, so they started companies and employed those who have a piece of paper to show they are employable.

The successful ones end up delegating management of their biz to the employees, enjoying profits, and may even owe them for fun. At that point, talking down becomes the least of the available evils, if one chooses to see it that way. (The same water that softens a carrot or beans when heated, is the same one that hardens an egg).

So long story short. It goes both ways. Whoever thinks they are up will talk down. No be one side.
pocohantas:
I very much know the difference between a wake-up call [whoever appointed them the "waker"] and talking down. I and so many other 9-5s can't be wrong or oblivious of this difference.

So, my answer doesn't lie there. Regards.

OP all I'll tell u is that there are people silently living the cruise life right here in naija. And there are those who sold their car to relocate, and now sleep in libraries while bathing and keeping things in their Asian friends house, because he will allow them do anything but sleep there. Then they go to work at 10pm when normal human beings are trying to sleep, and are not allowed to leave the premises until a set time. Even to shit. They endure and only change job when the day comes that they shit on themselves because permit is denied.

That being said. if everything is sure as you said (highly unlikely i.m.o.) Worst case scenario, your choice boils down to this > Slave in Heaven or King in Hell. Best case scenario Average citizen of Heaven.

when you people start talking about how somebody is earning the equivalent of 10 gazillion naira abroad, you often forget to factor in the concept of purchasing power. the equivalent of 700 naira here which is about 2 dollars will only buy you 2 coke there. Whereas you will get 7 of the same bottle here. so when you check, the real PP of that 3million over there might not be more than 400k. The only advantage is you get more value for your money, steady light, good road etc. you will still pay rent utilities and all. So always factor that in before you get carried away by salary earnings numbers

Shut the Bleep up. Most of you nigerian are beclouded by ignorance driven mediocrity and it is a pity some people who know nothing about foreign country still think like you. Do you think there is life here. What you call paid employment is nothing short of slavery compared to this foreign country. A newly employed banker in the U.S receive nothing less than 3 million naira equivalent per month. The most important thing is to get the right document that could grant you a legitimate working right.

ingenuity. laptop. internet. focus. that's really all you need today. most people just want another person to do the thinking for them. I would have added temporary 9-5 to raise capital. but again, if you have the first four, you can raise the capital you need, albeit slowly. then pursue bigger fish. translate online wins to offline wins.
Hedonisco:
In this age of the Internet, even the risk taking aspect of entrepreneurship is overrated, especially for beginners. Trust me, the most important resource needed in new-age entrepreneurship is not necessarily capital, but INITIATIVE... Ingenuity.

Here's a short definition of entrepreneur that captures its whole essence:

Someone who exercises initiative by organising a venture to take advantage of an opportunity...

Most people are dissuaded by the fear of expending money in order to start a venture. They would ask you, 'where will I see money to start the business', or they would say 'what if I lose all my savings in the course of pursuing this business'. This mindset is too limiting and very outdated.

Telecommunication and the internet is the most important development in the history of the world. It is the great equaliser. It has made it more possible and easier then ever to minimise financial risk and launch ventures with virtually a shoe-string budget and yet watch that venture grow exponentially into something that yields millions and billions. The

It is possible to sell a product you don't own, or a service you can't provide yourself, to buyers you have never met, and yet make as much profit or even more than the actual producers of that product or service.
The brokerage and arbitrage opportunities are endless.

You can even market your own product or service to specific audiences at prices that are 1000% more than the prevailing market average, with a little tweak.

In doing all of this, it is possible to start these ventures without spending up to what it costs to buy a low budget Android phone, without worrying about fixed costs (inventory, office space etc.).

There's a lot out there, especially now that the Internet has removed physical barriers to the markets and so the possibilities are endless if you have keen vision, a sharp nose, a creative mind, and a willingness to take action over and over again. It doesn't matter if you have money or not, as long as you have access to the Internet.

Anyway, salvation is a lonely, dark street and everyone must work the work alone and find their own way. Dem no dey tell person.
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 12:25pm On Sep 19, 2019
lol. bro. I'm being hypothetical and considerate even. grin most people here cant take the harsh pill of truth. Let's assume they get paid pension/gratuity or whatever lump sum AFTER 35 long years of donkey slave labor. The people they look at to have hope are the failing entrepreneurs. Of which failure is a certain thing on the path. multiple times sef. they borrow from 95ers to try again. and fail again. 99 times until number 100 click and pages for all the past failures. grin

Your question is valid though. how many?
Hedonisco:
You're funny. How many 9-5ers in Nigeria will save up to 50 million at age 65 sef? Where dem wan see am after all the toil, expenses etc of maintaining their families and so forth? Maybe only 1% of the entire workforce with very good working conditions and a guaranteed fat gratuity.
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 9:13am On Sep 19, 2019
you are correct but there is definitely a difference. having seen both sides, you know that there is no closing time for an entrepreneur. you are working 247 to grow your empire. however the difference is choice. you can choose to work TDB and choose to do absolutely nothing the next day and nobody fit tell you shit. abi you wan sack yourself? grin and if you work 50 naira work you go get 50 naira or even 500. whereas the other way, you work 50 naira work or 5000 naira work, na still the same 50 naira una agree, wey you go collect. Everyone should strive towards entrepreneurship. One can start as a 9-5er but dont hope to die there is my own 2 cents. Chop knuckle.
FarahAideed:
I am a die hard entrepreneur and all I am saying if you are not built for this stay away because it's very very stressful and the end of the day there is no overall difference in the moments both parties can afford
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 9:00am On Sep 19, 2019
The main problem is in the thinking. Most believe that if you decide on entrepreneurship, that it's going to be like licking ice cream. grin

You want to wake up and blow over night, but the fact is the entrepreneur life, is just the 9-5 life of 35 years of service, compressed into 3 to 4 years. So it is even harder than 9-5. Most give up before the blowing, but those who are successful, begin to live the retired pensioner chilling life before age 40. That is the long and short of it. To each his own, depending on how much you value the short time we have on earth.
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 8:52am On Sep 19, 2019
looool. alright bro. so my question you now is this. would you rather be dangote or a bank md. answer honestly. bear in mind that whichever God you worship is watching/ reading this nairaland thread. grin
FarahAideed:
Don't let anybody deceive you there is nothing special about being an entrepreneur than being and employee . I have have done both but been an entrepreneur longer and trust me there are days I wish I was an employee again because of the stress and damage entrepreneurship does to one from your social life , your love life ( if you have not carried your partner along) , the broken relationship with family members especially when you first leave paid employment to start your own gig .. there is no point in entrepreneurship where the uncertainty stop because once we conquer on problem we move to another bigger one .. Trust after really studying both roles I believe the employees have a better overall life at the end of the day because the entrepreneur is really just addicted to pain and dopamine he feels when he wins temporarily only to repeat the circle again . Next time take good look at Dangote and any bank MD and tell me who looks more relaxed and better looking skin wise ..
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 8:38am On Sep 19, 2019
Nigeria is the way it is cos u hv more 9-5ers looking for work than creators creating jobs. Supply of workers (fresh graduates) exceeds demand. Unlike in our parents time, the govt was the main entrepreneur, and the average entrepreneurs problem was finding competent staff. They begged ppl to go to school & learn so they could be employable. Demand for 9-5ers exceeded supply. Now every parent sent their child to school and the reverse is the case. So to balance it, more people have to create jobs. Even those with jobs. On a final note. no matter your salary, you will never out earn your employer. you make 3m monthly, imagine d owner.
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 8:27am On Sep 19, 2019
the difference is in the value of time. some entrepreneurs will not post what they earn here for security reasons, and to prevent ppl from asking bros'show us the way' before rushing to saturate the biz, but some can show you screenshots of what they earn in a month. to get that kind of pay, you would need to work a minimum of 15 to 25 years as a 9-5er to get that. Whereas the entrepreneur studied the biz for a year and used another year to get it started. he/she retires at 35, the 9-5er finally saves up 50 million at age 65. Time is the difference and the most valuable resource.
pocohantas:
I didn't read past the first paragraph, but yes- that is my point exactly. Both sides don't have it easy. 9-5 know they can earn better. Why do business people act like they are all earning millions?!
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 8:01am On Sep 19, 2019
Also it is impossible for everyone to be a boss. In this life something must be up and another down. one left and another right. leader and follower, white and black, master and slave, cheater and cheated. Boss and employee. It is how the universe operates.

What is constant though is change. You are not meant to be on one side forever. You win then you lose then you win again. Cycle of life.

Everyday another human is born to take the place of another, but 9-5ers want to die on one side. You are meant to do 9-5 to get enough capital to now become an employer. you serve first then you lead.
CareerRe: Why Do Entrepreneurs Talk Down On 9-5? by GoldPencil: 7:54am On Sep 19, 2019
I dont think the 9-5 are being talked down on. not in all cases at least. Except a person chooses to view it that way. it's more of a wake up call.
If you go from having no time for yourself and no control over your income regardless of the amount of effort you put in; to the exact opposite, when you see others, it's like watching ppl walk into walls blindfolded.

So you tell them to remove the cloth from their eye. Some ppl take it as insult. Some just enjoy the darkness. To each his own. The eye opening however, is never easy.
