Thanks for your info.  But there's absolutely no need for the tribalism you're displaying here.  Are you aware that not everyone who wrote the exam in Ibadan are Yorubas?  As a matter of fact, there is a possibility that about 20% - 50% of those that wrote the UME in Ibadan are non-Yorubas.  This is due to the fact that when there were no more centres in Lagos, people had to choose areas in Ogun state, and when centres ran out of Ogun state also, so many people were left with no choice than to choose Oyo state (Ibadan precisely), as it is the closest to Lagos after Ogun.

This is Fayose's gift to the people that voted him into power. When PDP wins next time, they'll wonder why.

You mean Fashola, I believe.  Anyway, it's possible that the decision was made before Fashola's installation as governor.  Remember this report was only publisbed on Tuesday (inauguration day). In other words, it's most probably an idea borne out of the Tinubu administration.  And as otokx asked, is this Tinubu's parting gift for Lagosians?

Seun:

This has nothing to do with the environment. It's very naive of anyone to think so. It's about money.
Who cares about the environment, when there's no power? The environment can go to hell for now, please.

Exactly!  That's why I call this daylight robbery.  And talking of the environment, I think what they should even be more concerned about is the land pollution, not the almost-inevitable atmospheric one.
Business / Re: Lagos Imposes Levy On Generator Owners! by goodguy(m): 6:29pm On May 31, 2007
@ debosky,

As Aproko rightly advised, come and start a business in Lagos, and let's see if you'll still see things this way.  You say the levy is small compared to the amount used in installing these generators, but you fail to realise that generators do not work with ordinary air.  Owners use money to buy fuel everyday (majority run on diesel, which is now over N100 per litre), they spend money on maintenance, which in turn affects the consumers because of the high cost of production by the manufacturer, which further affects business owners when consumers start looking for cheaper alternatives, probably due to the reduction of prices of goods/services offered by certain manufacturers, which then makes such manufacturers earn little compared to what they really ought to earn on a good day, just because they want to attract customers with their "low prices", thereby leaving those with "higher prices" (normal price actually, looking at the cost of production) to cut their losses; and this eventually brings everybody to a sorry state.

Another thing you failed to realise is that some generator owners probably bought their generators when they were "loaded" and things were really going smooth for them.  But now, they are no more the "millionaires" they used to be due to one problem or the other, and are now struggling to make ends meet with that "expensive generator" they bought "back then", someone is now asking them to pay some amount that they haven't even realised as profit in a month.

When the State Government decides to start robbing hardworking chaps of their hard earned little profits in daylight, in the name of some so-called levy, one can only wonder where this country is heading to.

@ topic,

I say, if they are really serious about wanting to reduce the amount of CO/CO2 emmitted into the environment, I suggest that they start with the horrible commercial suffocators commonly known as 'molues' and 'danfos'.

if the answer to the above is yes, and God sees things happening BUT does nothing about it, does that make god an accessory to the fact?

just 2 interesting questions.

debosky:

that question seems to place God and humans on the same pedestal. let me give a parallel illustration

suppose a wildlife documentary cameraman watches as a leopard sneaks up on a gazelle and eats it, would the guy be an 'acessory' to the murder of the gazelle in the court of the animal kingdom?

These two analogies are flawed because, unlike God, no human is omnipotent and omnibenevolent.

feelgood:

I have come to realise that some of us would prefer a xtian to stridently defend his faith and show his superiority (and occasionally through unprovoked 'missiles and verbal assaults') especially to the people of other religions, lest he may be deemed not worthy of his calling.

Unfortunately, this has become the order of the day here in the religion section of this forum.  It's just so sad.  This is the major reason why I have become more of a spectator here.  I visit Nairaland every day, but most times as a guest.  And when I read some posts here, I cannot help shaking my head in pity and disgust at the level of hypocrisy displayed by some so-called Christians.  Their iconoclastic attitudes have become so nauseating that even when one reproves them in the most peaceful way ever and seeks for peace, he's labelled a hypocrite and called all kinds of names.  Ask bobbyaf.

As for the rest of your post, I must confess that I haven't seen such a sensible post presented in the most mature manner, here on this board in a very long time.  Many blessings to you, brother.

@ topic:  I wouldn't call this a gender discrimination, as I don't see it as such.  Just like the poster above me, doncartel, just said, I want to believe that it's a result of the way they pray in their mosques.  Since they usually bend down with their buttocks shooting up, it's best if the women are asked to pray behind, so that our muslim brothers won't 'commit', if it were otherwise. Remember they don't close their eyes while praying. grin

I'm sure he didn't mean it that way.  I guess he was being . . . 'colloquial'?  He's most probably a Yoruba guy, who simply translated it directly, exactly as it would have been said in the Yoruba language.

Romance / Re: My Boyfriend Said I Look Old by goodguy(m): 12:30pm On May 19, 2007
If he truly loves her and not just some "sweet talker" with a sugar-coated tongue that only wants to "suck the oranges and throw away the peels", I really see no reason why he shouldn't be plain with her about her appearance.  The fact that I love you doesn't mean I shouldn't say some truths to you when necessary.  It's only a matter of the tone used, and a consideration of the mood too.

But then, even this lady here seems to have a funny and unbalanced stance here.  When she asked her boyfriend whether she had the body of a "2- year old" (whatever that means anyway), I'm sure he was trying to "diligently insist that she is perfect" when he told her 'yes'.  But she felt hurt! (for God-knows-why). Now, probably upon seeing her reaction towards that, he quickly conjuncted by adding ". . . but your face looks old", maybe trying to make up for the previous statement; which still hurt her!

Poor guy! sad
Romance / Re: My Boyfriend Said I Look Old by goodguy(m): 11:32am On May 19, 2007
Seun, even you?

Why are you people bashing her boyfriend?  I agree with joobreel here as well.  The guy was probably referring to the way she looked as at the time that comment was made.  Remember he was referring to her facial appearance, not her overall appearance.

Seun, you said it is not his duty to tell her, but you forget that she was the one that asked for a comment on her appearance.  He didn't just wake up that morning to tell her, "Girl, you look old!".

Please people, let's try to be as objective as possible when passing comments on issues like this.  You have only heard from one party, and it will be completely unwise to make conclusions on the other party.

Her boyfriend is not an idiot!
Romance / Re: My Boyfriend Said I Look Old by goodguy(m): 11:05pm On May 18, 2007
Now I can't stomach this any longer.  I'm sick and tired of all the stupid and disgusting comments on this thead so far.

Can't you people read?  I mean those of you saying that she should dump the guy, and those saying that he probably has someone else (I'm even more perplexed that some guys are also on this line of thought)    Incase you guys missed it, this is what she posted on page 2:

we were not fighting
i was only admiring myself in the mirror and i asked him do you think i hav eth ebody of a 2- year old and he said yes i do ( which hurts cosi know i don't )

then he said but your face looks old ,

and that was it

i have never been so hurt

so hurt i had to bring it to Nairaland users to console me
**Emphasis mine.**

Exegesis:

She was admiring herself in the mirror, she asked him a simple question about her appearance, and being the lovely gentleman and honest person he is, he told her the plain truth.  In fact, I completely agree with FemiD  on this one.  From this post of hers, he did not sound like he was ridiculing her or trying to make her feel bad  --  far from it.  He was just being frank (or are you ladies here trying to make me really believe that all you love to hear are just lies?).  If your boyfriend cannot tell you a simple truth without you feeling uncomfortable with it, then I guess a stranger will most likely appeal to you right?  No wonder guys have become perpetual liars.

Deep down within herself, this lady here probably knows that the guy was being sincere.  She only felt hurt (because truth hurts!) and needed to console herself, and that was why she came here to make it a topic.  I don't think she started this thread for anyone to start calling her boyfriend all sorts of names.

Atimes, I really wonder how some people reason.  You people have only heard her own side of the story, and you're already bashing the other party.  This is the major reason why I hardly post on threads like this.  The posters usually give a baised account of an incidence, and the "lovely" and "helpful" Nairalanders are usually so quick to pass fatuous judgements.

Bullshit!

Anyway, Tellthem, I hope you've already gotten the consolation you needed.

Good night!

@babs787:

Your posts would be more interesting to read if you could endeavour to quote, rather than 'paint' others' posts.  My eyes usually hurt while trying to read a very long post with a mixture of colours, and so, I usually ignore and go on to other posts.  I understand that you cannot insert quotes the usual way due to some technical problems you experience on your PC, so I've decided to help.

Hint:  Copy and paste the post that you want to quote, into the 'reply' field.  Select the part you want to quote and click on the '' button found just above the smileys.

Yep, that's it circled above.

Now for example, if you're quoting the text 'babs787', first of all highlight it, and click on the '' button. Then you'll get something like this:

[ quote ] babs787 [ /quote ]  **without the spaces**, which will eventually come out as this when you post:
babs787

Incase that doesn't work for you either, you can type it out manually, without the spaces, like I've done above (if you're familiar with HTML, you'll get it easily).

Hope that helps.

N.B.  This is not in any way intended to ridicule babs.  I sincerely apologize if the addressee or any other person feels otherwise.

P.S.  Sorry for going offtopic.

Now if GOD created ADAM and EVE and ADAM and EVE have only two sons CAIN and ABEL.

Adam and Eve did not have only two sons. Have you forgotten Seth? Besides, we read in Genesis 5:4 that: "And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters". They had numerous children!

opuro:

WHO ARE THEIR WIVES[cain and abel] abi ADAM and EVE have more than two children. if so did CAIN and ABEL marry their sisters?

We were not told whether Abel had a wife or not. He was killed by his brother, and that's last we heard of him. But as for Cain, yes, he married his sister. TV/Movies / Jet Li And Jackie Chan To Team Up On 'The Forbidden Kingdom' by goodguy(m): 8:38pm On May 05, 2007
Great news for Jackie Chan/Jet Li fans:

The movie formerly known as "The J & J Project" has officially been titled "The Forbidden Kingdom" and will begin filming in China in May.

Information from Variety.com gives you a few more details:

Lionsgate has boarded martial-arts actioner "The Forbidden Kingdom," which pairs Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time on the big screen.

Indie studio is planning a September 2008 domestic release. Casey Silver produces.

The Weinstein Co. is partnering with Lionsgate on the project, picking up distrib rights in Spain, France and Latin America. Lionsgate will distribute in the U.K.

Director Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King," "Stuart Little"wink is set to begin lensing the pic in China on May 2 from a script by John Fusco. Action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who has worked on films including "The Matrix" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," is creating the fight sequences.

Relativity Media is financing the pic, with company topper Ryan Kavanaugh taking an exec producer credit. Relativity will handle foreign sales.

"Casey Silver scored a real coup in bringing together two titans of martial arts, Jackie Chan and Jet Li," Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said.

Based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king, story revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. Teen is transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king.

Li is set to play two roles, that of the monkey king and the silent monk. Chan will pay the monk T'sa-Ho.

When promoting the U.S. bow of Li's most recent movie, "Fearless," Rogue Pictures touted it as his last martial-arts epic. "Forbidden" is being described as more of an action-adventure with fight sequences.

I've been on Wikipedia now for about 2 hours reading different articles; you know all those hyperlinked texts, I just keep opening and reading one upon another.  Eventually, I came across an article about 'look-alikes' and I found it really intriguing and interesting.  A very remarkable one is Steve Sires who is a Bill Gates look-alike.  Suzzy Kennedy is also another outstanding look-alike of Marilyn Monroe.

So I was wondering if any Nairalander is a look-alike of any known celebrity(-ies).

Ahh, we meet again, nferyn cheesy.  How are you doing?  Our sister (your wife) and your kids. . hope they're doing fine as well.  As usual, you've put up a worthwhile rejoinder, and I shall attend to the areas that really draw my attention.

Maybe, but things like changing usernames (e.g. DaHitler) to punish offenders isn't really the way to best administer the forum.

You're right about that.  I remember when he changed my username to 'thebadguy' for rebuking him openly on a particular thread, which he immediately deleted.  That's just totally pointless.  But then again, I guess it was as a result of one of those mood swing moments of his.

Is it hurricane Eve, you're referring to? grin

Lol.  Right on spot! cheesy  That girl was something else.

Your point?

I believe that was self-explanatory.  Anyway, my point there was, apparently, everyone cannot be the same, so we should expect all manners of human beings here, from the mentally deranged to the highly calibred.  So, I don't really expect us to be complaining much about the kinds of people we have around, as such situations should be already expected.  I mean, we're almost 100,000 on this forum. . get my point?

There's no shame in being ignorant, we all were at some time and we all are regarding most things. There's plenty of shame though in empty intellectual grandstanding. People messing up interesting threads with vacuous opinions and actually proudly wearing their badges of ignorance is a real turn-off to me.

I get you point here.  It's so unfortunate.

@ topic:

It may also interest you guys to know that I have been banned countless times on this forum. Infact, I think I deserve an award - "The most banned member on Nairaland". Seun, what do you think? cheesy
Nairaland / General / Re: Davidylan by goodguy(m): 11:05pm On Apr 30, 2007
Hmmm. . . now you guys remind me of the good ol' days. cheesy The days of Layi, vexxy, Ijebuman, chrisd, nicetohave, Alheri, IAH, et al. One thing to note here however is that not all of them left (or became inactive) because of Seun. e.g. vexxy.

While it is true that Seun contributed in a way to the present state of this forum (disabling PM, banning unnecessarily, etc.), it is also important to note that Seun does not constitute Nairaland alone, as as such, cannot and should not be held solely responsible for its current state. I onced used to complain and whine a lot about how he administered this forum, then one day, he gave me a reply:

"Create a forum of your own, and when you have up to 20 thousand members, come back to tell me how it is being the Admin". (not verbatim).

Then, we were only about 20,000 on this forum or thereabout. Ever since, I started putting myself in his shoes.

His point there, I believe, was that it was (an still is) difficult to administer a forum with all kinds of people from all walks of life at the same place, and at the same time. Sometimes, one gets so frustrated that one takes some actions without forethought. And to be honest, the attitudes of most members here are so appalling, to say the least.

Another thing to note here is that this forum is Seun's personal business. It is one of his major (if not the major) sources of livelihood, and such, he must maintain it to the fullest in order to achieve that "world-class" forum that he so much yearns for. I once read a post of his, where he said, "I want this forum to be as professional as possible. I want readers to read posts like they're reading a newspaper. . ." (not verbatim either). That was in regards to editing people's posts. Honestly, I wouldn't blame him for doing so. If you follow the rules well enough, I don't think he will edit your post for any reasons. Throughout my almost 2 years of membership on Nairaland, I can't recall a single time Seun ever edited any of my over 6000 posts, though he has deleted countless of them for reasons I totally understand. And on this note, I appeal to reasonable folks here to please stop referring to Seun as a college drop-out, condescendingly. Do you honestly think he's happy being a college drop-out? As far as I am concerned, he is far more intelligent than majority of the so-called graduates on this forum. On my list of intelligent Nairalanders, Seun will always be in the top 10. So please, stop all these demeaning comments, as they are totally unnecessary.

Furthermore, we should all realise that people have always left, and many more will still leave. The number of people joining Nairaland everyday are far more than those that leave in 3 months. Around earlier last year to mid last year, this forum was completely boring to me, due the numerous teenagers that filled the whole forum and spammed every single topic at the slightest opportunity. My addiction to Nairaland was almost reduced to naught. Fortunately, they all seemed to vanish in a single night. For me, that was a breath of fresh air. I started frequenting the forum once again, and to be fair and unbiased, there have been many more intelligent folks here than we had in the past (due to the population of course).

Moreso, I will like to say that I completely agree with Pain here. Nairaland is a world of its own, where we have the good, the bad, and of course, the ugly. We all cannot be the same. Our variations are what makes the forum interesting (at least, for me). In every community, there will always be the troublemakers, the peacemakers, and the onlookers. We'll always have the intellectuals, the morons, and the mediocres. For this reason, I hereby appeal to the "Intellectuals" among us, to please accommodate the "Morons" and "Intellectually challenged". Hopefully, they'll learn a whole lot from you guys eventually.

And on a final note, I will like to say a big THANK YOU to Seun for creating a site as invaluable as this. Nairaland has helped me in numerous ways, and has greatly affected my life positively. Of course, I owe that to the vast majority of the intellectuals on this forum, including one of my greatest antagonists, davidylan. But a bigger part of my gratitude goes to the Admin for putting us all together, and most importantly, to hot-angel, who introduced me to this forum on September 1, 2005 - a date I'll never forget.

Cheers.
