Maxcoded: Well it only happens if you flash the so called "global roms" on a Chinese ROM....
and by so called "global ROM", I mean those ROMS aliexpress sellers put on Chinese version phones.
Maybe I wasn't clear enough with my first comment Maybe you meant shop/fake roms. Almost every rom flashed by sellers are genuine roms, and such phones won't have any issue. The very few times sellers will flash fake roms will be due to the unavailability of official roms or lack of Global roms. Let's take a little drift. I got a Mi Max 3 Chinese Version some weeks back with a controversial Global rom installed by the seller (miui 9.6.4.0). If you check, online, till date, there's still controversy whether this rom is genuine, fake, or in between. In fact some moderators on miui forum declared it as fake and warned of the potential of bricking your device if you attempt to flash the official rom on it. They even claimed the rom won't get OTA. That rom has issues with modems / network, plus lagging issues. Some early buyers already attempted tweaking their devices, some rooted, unlocked bootloader, re locked bootloader, flashed eu roms, flashed China dev roms, and some got their devices bricked during the process. To cut a long story short, after reading through the 59 pages of the thread, I was convinced that the rom is not fake afterall mainly because I got a miui 10 OTA update on the device after connecting to WiFi ( note that some fake roms also get OTA updates, the Redmi 5 plus comes to mind). Device is currently running miui 10 Global Stable rom. |

Phones › Re: The Xiaomi Thread. by Gptech(m): 1:30pm On Nov 19, 2018 |
lanre316: No sir. I prefer the Chinese phone with global rom installed. I just want to be assured that updates will not brick my phone, based on some things I heard about Xiaomi trying to discourage global rom installation on Chinese phones.
I actually don't care whether bootloader is locked or unlocked. I just want a phone that won't brick when updating.
Thanks. Like I said, you are fine, there's nothing to be afraid about. |

klexycole: I personally don't rely on GsmArena anymore. They don't have accurate information about phones. I watch unboxing and hands-on reviews on YouTube to get all I want.
Similarly, I've watched several video comparisons of both phones, and the 8x seems better marginally. Regarding software updates and all, Honor push constant updates on their phones too, safe for the inability to unlock bootloader.
But then, I haven't chosen the one to buy yet. Definitely a tough one, the Honor is even cheaper currently, decision should be based on what one can live with/ without. |
Phones › Re: The Xiaomi Thread. by Gptech(m): 9:34am On Nov 19, 2018 |
traecey: Is it possible for global Rom to be installed and bootloader locked? If you buy the Global rom ( Chinese version with Global rom installed), your bootloader will come unlocked. Trying to lock the bootloader is where you might have issues of bricking. |
Phones › Re: The Xiaomi Thread. by Gptech(m): 9:30am On Nov 19, 2018 |
klexycole: True that, but individual usage differs. Just saw a video now, and the included charger is not a quick charger, you'll need to get one if you need quick charging . On the plus side, Gsmarena and some of their wrong info, phone actually has an hybrid sim slot contrary to what Gsmarena says. On the battery stuff, yes individual usage affects alot. Network stability, temperature, luminosity, etc also affects. If you are a traveller, you'll really suffer . |

lanre316: The global rom installed. Will it be safe to update it later in the future. I heard that Xiaomi has started making it impossible to update Chinese redmi with global rom installed, unless bootloader is unlocked. How true is this? You are fine with updates, there's no cause for alarm, what you heard of is something totally different. |

klexycole: Nice. Seems I will be going for Mi 8 Lite too then. But one would need to get the Xiaomi 2c powerbank because of the low capacity. Won't say battery is low, you know the S660 is power efficient, and there's quick charger out of the box. Getting a power bank should not be a must here. |

Cc @gptech grandmufti henry007 et al Your phone will be less responsive to touch if you do it. There's no advantage of using two tampered glasses at thesame time, it won't add to your phone's protection. |
