PoliticsRe: The Era Of "Prosecute Your Own Thief, Leave Mine For Me" by Gr8amechi: 8:49am On Oct 20, 2015
TonyeBarcanista:
Nigeria is a very unique country with her way of doing things. We all agree that corruption is one of the biggest clog in the wheel of our progress. We all complain on how elected and appointed politicians and civil servants steal our common wealth. It is a consensus that billions of dollars borrowed on "our behalf" by people on authorities at all levels. Despite all these, we have degenerated into the level of "investigate, arrest and prosecute your own thief but leave mine alone". How did we get this low?

Olusegun Obasanjo Era: "Prosecute Them All"
Before the return of democracy in 1999, corruption was like a norm in Nigeria. It denied Nigerians social amenities and put the masses in abject poverty. The coming of EFCC and ICPC to try corruption, bribery and other economic crimes in 2003 brought a sigh of relief to Nigerians. Nigerians always celebrate whenever a BIG fish is arrested by former EFCC Chairman Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Among the top shots that fell to EFCC/ICPC hammer are exMinister Fabian Osuji, ex-Senate President Adolphus Wabara, ex-IGP Tafa Balogun, ex-Gov late Diepreye Alamesiegha, several senators etc. In addition, major top-shots like ex-VP Atiku Abubakar, ex-Chairman of NPA Olabode George(who as at that time was the PDP Deputy National Chairman, South), 33 state governors etc were indicted by the EFCC under the Obasanjo administration. Not even the excuse of Alhaji Garba Shehu, the spokesman for Atiku Abubakar's accusation that the old Ota farmer was getting back at Atiku and other 'perceived' enemies because of the failed third term bid could sail through. Neither did Nigerians take any sermon of political 'witch-hunt' as valid defence. We all wanted people to be brought to book.

Though Nigerians commended Obasanjo's fight, the accusation of selective prosecution was prominent in the socio-political space. Specifically, Obasanjo repeatedly shielded Olabode George from prosecution despite the indictment against him since 2003. The song on the lips of Nigerians was "prosecute them all"

Umaru Yar'adua Era: "Stop shielding corrupt elite, prosecute them all"
When Yar'adua took over office, he was expected to allow the EFCC prosecute the outgoing Vice President Atiku Abubakar and all corrupt governors that were indicted while in office having lost their immunity. Alas, Yar'adua introduced the 'plea bargain' that allows a man that steals billions to bargain and surrender a few millions in exchange. For instance, ex-Edo state Governor Lucky Nosakhare Igbenedion was indicted by Ribadu-led EFCC of looting $24million of Edo state fund, he was convicted by court under plea bargain and was asked to pay a meagre N3.5million. Yar'adua also appointed Michael Aandooaka, the defence counsel to James Ibori, George Akume etc as Attorney-General of the Federation. The administration moved to remove Mallam Nuhu Ribadu from his position as EFCC boss and whittled down the prosecution powers of EFCC, ICPC and CCB. Nigerians wailed and cried that corruption is being rewarded while anti-corruption punished. Yar'adua also nominated and appointed Senator Adamu Aliero, a former governor of Kebbi state and then serving senator as FCT minister. Aliero was indicted by the EFCC for corruption.
Our call through out the administration was "Stop shielding corrupt elite, prosecute them all"

Goodluck Jonathan Era: "Stop Institutionalising Corruption"
Although, credit to Jonathan that he was keen on separating the Yams from the Goats(according to his famous Goat and Yam theory). He signed the Freedom of Information bill into law, introduced policies that encourage transparency, but he failed to pursue cases against 'Goats' that ate 'yams' before and during his administration, especially his appointees. Those that were indicted in subsidy investigation and those that focused their attention on public resources were given freehand. For instance, Abdulrasheed Maina, was appointed as Chairman of Presidential Task Force on Pension Reform was indicted by the Senate over allegation that he looted N193billion of pensioners money, yet it took consistent wailing from Nigerians before Jonathan bothered to remove him from office. He wasn't prosecuted. Similar case was that of Stella Oduah who was indicted for N260million car saga. Though we have to credit Jonathan's government for indicting Sule Lamido and Murtala Nyako. Under Jonathan, corruption technically became 'Institutionalised'. Nigerians cry became "stop institutionalising corruption"

Muhammadu Buhari Era: "Prosecute Your Own Thief, Leave Mine For Me"
Buhari was elected on the platform of change mantra. Apart from the usual "Sai Baba" crew, there are people that thumb-printed for Buhari and APC did so on the premise of fighting corruption. Just two days on taking office, Buhari government withdrew the ongoing corruption case against Timpre Sylva and now rewarded him with party ticket for Bayelsa election. Pa Audu Abubakar only recently promised to return the monies he stole when he was in government. The EFCC has deliberately refused to work on the petitions against ex-Govs Rotimi Amaechi, Raji Fashola etc. In fact, the infamous N78million for 'website' and N128million appropriated just for TWO boreholes by Raji Fashola is being treated with levity. We all know that CONTRACT INFLATION is a crime according to EFCC Act. In fact, one of the charges against Olabode George was contract inflation. Despite his glaring hypocrisy, the President must be credited for the ongoing prosecution of Senator Bukola Saraki and the invitation of some ex-governors by the EFCC. Unlike during the Obasanjo era when people celebrate when someone is arrested for financial crimes, this era people first check the name of who's arrested, his party and then decide whether or not to shout 'Sai Baba' or to cry 'witch hunt'. In fact, APC fans will justify rewarding their corrupt chieftains with federal appointments. Some PDP fans and Chieftains will cry dictatorship and witch-hunt when the axe falls on PDP Chieftains irrespective of the merit of the case. It is now a talk of "prosecute your own thief but leave mine alone".

It is shameful and unpatriotic that people no longer pay heed to the financial crimes of officials. They forget that there is no honor in trying to shield the same people that looted our common wealth from facing their crimes. It is more disappointing that the Buhari-led administration is leading the charge in this new trend of prosecute their thieves but reward our own.

May God Bless Us All And Bless Nigeria

The SUG issue is not peculiar to DELSU only. It's a general phenomenon, SUG is dead in 98% of the nation's higher institutions.. Gone are the days of radical SUG excos.. All we have now are excos who are interested in fattening their pockets and bank accounts. I just laugh whenever I see campaign posters.. The zeal is dead.

There still are a microscopic few people who are radical though, but they usually don't participate in school politics, hence paving the way for weak-minded and greedy individuals to lead the pack.

The above only corroborates one of Edmund Burke's numerous quotes, which says; "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing (sic)".
great words, but what's your take why not we work to produce competent people in the next admin rather than just sit down and critise

Yea.. Rumour has it that he asked the institution to generate her own funds, hence, the increase in Acceptance fee, Medical fee, Tuition fee etc..

I really wish above all things there shouldn't be an increase in the tuition fee of stale students.

The incumbent governor has been making myriad of irrational decisions lately. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a curse to Delta State..

Why the increase in fees when;
* Delta State receives the third highest allocation from the federal government, after Akwa-Ibom and Rivers
* Delta State has the third highest Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the country, after Lagos and Rivers..

? huh huh
my real problem is our sug is dead.....assuming we have a vibrant sug some of these issues will be handled

Love is love, likewise lust and infatuation.

Whoever confuses one with the other is ignorant of their meaning.

Dear Nairalanders, this piece is my personal opinion, submission and conclusion as regard the topic. It's quite lengthy notwithstanding I want you to take your time and go through everything in order to effectively decode my point and bone of contention base on the subject matter. Knowledge, they say is open ended and not tentative, hence no one is a custodian of it. You can share your views and criticism, but please be concrete and discreet. There are two peculiar words at play here, in uses they are sometimes interchangeable but one is deeper and stronger than the other. Here we go.....

Love is actually a feeling that goes with human existence and emotions, it is sometime referred to as the greatest magic in the world because of it power of proficiency over man. It's good to love and be loved in return, but at times the reverse is the case. Often times we discovered that there are different varieties of love or rather, we see and observe love from different disposition and levels, as some consider it 'casual', some consider it 'genuine', some consider it 'TRUE', some consider it 'Agape', other varieties include; fatherly, motherly, brotherly, and sisterly love, these I call the 'LY' love. Whichever way we see it, it exist and function only where two or more persons co-exist and lived as a people in a specific society.

Despite all the attributes of love and it pertinent, I still struggle to come to term with how people refer to love as 'TRUE' and argue that there is nothing like 'TRUE LOVE'. After observing experiences and experiment carried out, I hereby conclude that there is no true love. The context of the phrase 'true love' is one thing I find yet to be justified in the world of man. Love can be genuine, casual or agape for that matter but there is nothing like true love. Love is a phenomenon that comes and go. It is not static and does not stand the test of time, where is the true in love.

A guy may love a girl genuinely from a sincere heart (and vice versa) and will be eager to do anything whatsoever to profess that love to her. At that point some will regard it as TRUE LOVE, without even considering the gravity of it. It is not true love but love in it genuineness, which of course can be reverse by circumstances or the coming of another love. That guy though loves the girl but after some time into the relationship the degree or percentage of the strength of the love reduces and continues until it becomes very low or non existent anymore, why is that? Such love cannot be term as true.

True is an everlasting phenomenon, no matter how long it is hidden, it will eventually come to manifestation someday and when it does, it indisputably stands and remain for life. Hence love cannot be regarded as true because it does not possess such quality. History will forever remember every scenario for its trueness. Though history or historical event sometimes can be twist or rewritten to suit or concur with the selfish desire of some people, or still in order to create either a negative or positive impressions, all aimed at either painting someone or people good or evil. That notwithstanding does not mean that there is no true story of the said history. Most African countries suffer this degradation from the bigoted whites.

Therefore, there is no true love, it only comes and go. Love does not remain forever, it changes as regard change in behaviours and circumstances around men. When someone loves, he/she cherish with all his/her heart, but at some point in time it becomes odd or rather not as effective as it were at the beginning, (a true love must maintain the degree and percentage base on which it started) this maybe due to the fact that someone else came that manage to stole the love a man has toward a woman and vice versa, or something unfortunate breach the love rendering it less effective or infidelity. Thus, as long as love got to do with emotion it should not be referred as true because anything can affect emotion as it may change.

Provided that, in a situation where someone love another probably from secondary school through tertiary institution and for one reason or the other they were no longer together, yet he/she professes his/her love toward that person as firm, in such cases it is only expedient to examine why they were not together in the first place, as it stand as the reason why such a love could be regard as rather genuine love that couldn't stand the test of time but certainly not true. Else they will rather be together, and breach will be found in the relationship.

That a couple lived and grew old together does not mean the love between them is true, it maybe genuine enough to sustain them all through their lifetime but it not necessarily true as there will be situation where the man or woman wish they had another person as partner or still may at one time or the other love and cherish another person even briefly, (I mean real love and not brotherly and sisterly love) yet they are still together as couple. At that point there is a breach making it less true but genuine to keep them together.

A true love must maintain a single strength from beginning to end. A true love must not change or shift affections toward another person (no matter how little). A true love must be eternal. So tell me where can we find such among men. As such people should put into cognisance the gravity and weight of the phrase "true love", before considering whether to term certain affections as true. Thanks.

C
there is nothing like true love, once you love you love, I will agree with you if you say love doesn't exist among us again, what we have is infatuation, love can't die...........a love that can end never really existed, and a love that can be substituted was just a farce

It's only normal to verify the result if the candidate is using a print-out.. Though I'd advice them to obtain the original certificates cos they will need it during screening when they're in 300 level, but they can as well use the print-out for now if the certificate is not ready.

Bottom line is, they should collect their certificates so as to avert being stressed by screening officers.
your last line was the exact point I was trying to make, to avoid any useless and unnecessary stress from those screening officers....

Conventionally, Diploma programmes span for two years.. If/when he graduates, he's gona obtain D.E form the following year and sit for Post-DE exam in order to be offered admission. The probability of him gaining admission through D.E is very low cos DELSU traditionally admits 10 Direct entry students into each department coupled with the fact that there'll be a myriad of candidates who'z gona score way above the cut-off.

If the person in question does not pass all the courses he's gona offer within the stipulated period of time (2 years), he will come back for an extension of at least a year till he passes all his courses..

The above reasons and more should discourage him to opt for Diploma..

Pre-degree on the other hand spans for 8 months. PD students stand a better chance of gaining admission due to the fact that they'll be given two baskets to house their eggs (Pre-Degree and UTME). If one doesn't work out, the other should, except of course his education is not one of his top priorities.

I reckon you know more about Pre-Degree/Pre-Science programme..
Diploma has be reviewed, its not longer the way exactly as you said it,
