In a study of pregnant women, a team of Deakin scientists has shown in humans for the first time that pregnancy can induce long-term epigenetic changes to human body, with major implications for understanding, preventing and treating disease. Deakin University scientists have discovered that pregnancy can cause long-term changes to the way women's genes behave, which could affect the health of mother and children.

The findings of a recent study from Deakin's Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, showed women experience major molecular changes during pregnancy that could remain with them after their pregnancy has ended. The changes are "epigenetic"-they are not a mutation of the gene's structure, but a change to how genes behave.

Long-term epigenetic changes can lead to increased risks of disease for the next generation. Studies have previously shown the offspring of women with diabetes have an increased risk of developing obesity, glucose intolerance and type 2 diabetes. Epigenetic markers act like a switch that can alter the activity of genes and cells in the body. All individual cells have the same genetic material, but the behaviour of a gene is different in different tissues of the body. That behaviour can be determined by epigenetic factors, independent of the DNA sequences of the genes.

Epigenetics has implications for understanding, preventing and combatting many diseases, from diabetes to cancer, providing understanding of how adverse environmental factors, including lifestyle, can cause disease. Researchers compared groups of never-pregnant women, pregnant women, and women at 20 weeks postpartum, and made comparisons between the same groups of women at pregnancy, at eight to 10 weeks postpartum, and at 20 weeks postpartum. Similar comparisons were carried out among women with type 2 diabetes.

A significant finding was that women with type 2 diabetes had different epigenetic profiles from non-diabetic women, and their profiles underwent different changes during pregnancy. Pregnancy-induced epigenetic changes could lead to complications among these women with diabetes, such as downstream effects that may contribute to insulin resistance, as well as high risk pregnancy outcomes. Maternal malnutrition and other adverse events in pregnancy can cause problems for the next generation due to epigenetics.

Researchers at Uppsala University and SLU have found a new way of accelerating wound healing. The technology involves using lactic acid bacteria as vectors to produce and deliver a human chemokine on site in the wounds. The research group is the first in the world to have developed the concept for topical use and the technology could turn out to be disruptive to the field of biologic drugs.

Treatment of large and chronic wounds are a high cost burden to the health care system since effective tools to accelerate healing are lacking. Wound care is today limited to mechanical debridement, use of different dressings and significant amounts of antibiotics preventing or treating wound infections. With the aging population, occurrence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and the alarming global spread of antibiotic resistance, a treatment that kick-starts and accelerates wound healing will have a significant impact.

There have been many attempts to solve the problem of chronic wounds that have failed. Drug candidates currently in late stage clinical trials comprise of growth factors, which are traditional protein-based biological drugs associated with high costs, and some trials have been prematurely terminated.

Researcher have developed a drug candidate, a next-generation biologic medical product, and are now publishing the fantastic results from the preclinical part where wound healing was strongly accelerated in mice," says Mia Phillipson, Professor at the Department of Medical Cell Biology, Division of Integrative Physiology, Uppsala University.

The acceleration of the healing process occurs due to changes in the microenvironment in the wound, which change the behaviour of specific immune cells. With the newly developed technology, the researchers can increase the level of a chemokine, CXCL12, for a sufficient time period through continuous delivery directly to the wound surface.

Bioavailability of CXCL12 is synergistically increased within the wound as the bacterial produced lactic acid causes a slight pH drop that inhibits degradation. The chemokine, CXCL12, is endogenously upregulated in injured tissue and by increasing the levels further, more immune cells are recruited and are more specialised to heal the wound, which accelerates the whole process.

The potent effect on acceleration of wound healing is demonstrated in healthy mice but also in two models of diabetes, one model of peripheral ischemia as well as in a model using human skin biopsies. There were clear differences in the composition of immune cells in the wounds and the immune cells present produced higher levels of TGFß at earlier time points. The treatment was local without systemic exposure.

Today, we are beginning this special series of divine encounter programme.
The passage we read is about a man who had a special encounter with the lord, Solomon. He had series of encounter with the Lord. God gave him a blank cheque. He said to Solomon, ask anything. Today I know He is talking to someone, my son you have been waiting for so long, ask for anything.
We will break this particular session into three parts;
Physical, Material and Spiritual
1. Physical: What will be your request when God ask you to ask for anything concerning your health. 1 Peter 2:24, your healing is already waiting. As the Lord lives, before you get back home, you will be singing a song of victory. Amen. Exodus 15:26 - when you do God's will, you will never be sick again.
When God gives you a blank cheque, you will be Healed , you will be Healthy, you will be so Strong Deut 34:7, you will lay hands on the sick and they shall recover Mark 16:18, Your shadow will heal the sick Acts 5:14-16. I decree in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, anyone who passes by you, will receive a miracle. Amen, in the mighty name of Jesus, what He has done for me, He will do for you in Jesus name. Amen

Father, thank you for the blank cheque, I don't want just to be healed, I want to be healthy, I want to be so strong, I want even my shadow to heal the sick.
2. Material: The blank cheque has a lot of space, you can go to God and say, I want enough, Philippians 4:19. I want to pray for someone today, in the might name of Jesus because of this divine Encounter, you will never borrow again. You can go to God and say, you don't want just enough, you want more than enough, John 10:10, you can say, you want much more than enough so that I will never struggle before I met my budget, Ephesians 3:20. I pray for someone here today, beginning from now, anything you want will be more than enough. Amen . You can say to God I have a blank cheque, you can say Lord what I want, I want to overflow, I want to be able to lend to Nations, Deut 28:11-12

Father, thank you for the blank cheque, I don't just want my need to be met, I want to overflow financially.
3. Spiritual: The blank cheque has a space for the spiritual. You can write in your blank cheque and say I want power Acts 1:8, you can say, I don't just want power, i want the gifts of the Holy Spirits 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (Words of wisdom, words of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, gifts of working of miracles, the discerning of spirits, diverse kinds of tongue, interpretation of tongues), you can say I want all the gifts, you can go further and say I don't just want the gift of working miracles, i want the gift of working special miracles Acts 19:11-12
Prayer,
Father, I don't just want to work miracles for you, I want to work special miracles for you.
But you can say to God, I don't just want to perform miracles, I want to make it to Heaven. If you are not a true child of the living God, and He gives you a blank cheque, the only thing you should write there is Lord, save my soul. Am speaking to you, if you have not surrender your life to Jesus, come to Jesus today.

Pregnant women who take the pain killer ibuprofen in the first trimester of their pregnancy may be reducing the store of eggs in the ovaries of their daughters. Researchers have found the first evidence in human ovarian tissue that exposure to ibuprofen during the crucial first three months of fetal development results in a loss of the germ cells that go into making the follicles from which female eggs develop. The germ cells either died or failed to grow and multiply at the usual rate.

Female children are born with a finite number of follicles in their ovaries and this defines their future reproductive capacity as adults," explained Dr Séverine Mazaud-Guittot, a researcher at INSERM in Rennes, France, who led the study. "A poorly stocked initial reserve will result in a shortened reproductive life span, early menopause or infertility-events that occur later in life.

The development of the follicles in the fetus has not been completed by the end of the first trimester, so if the ibuprofen treatment is short then the ovarian reserve may recover to some extent. However, two to seven days of exposure to ibuprofen dramatically reduced the germ cell stockpile in human fetal ovaries during the first trimester of pregnancy and the ovaries did not recover fully from this damage.

This suggests that prolonged exposure to ibuprofen during fetal life may lead to long-term effects on women's fertility and raises concern about ibuprofen consumption by women during the first trimester of pregnancy. Researcher obtained human fetuses between 7-12 weeks of development from legally induced terminations of pregnancy and with the mothers' consent.

Then they cultured the ovarian tissue in the laboratory; part of the tissue from each fetus was exposed to ibuprofen and a second part (the control) was not. Samples from 185 fetuses were analysed. They measured the quantity of ibuprofen in the blood in the umbilical cord in order to analyse how much the fetus would have been exposed to.

They found that ibuprofen crosses the placental barrier. The concentration in the umbilical cords of fetuses from mothers who ingested 800 mg (four pills of 200 mg) two to four hours before surgery is similar to the concentration that can be found in adult's blood for the same treatment. This shows that the fetus is exposed to the same concentration as the mother. In contrast to the fetal tissue that was not exposed to ibuprofen, the tissue that was exposed to concentrations of 10 μM (micromolar) of ibuprofen for a week had approximately half the number of ovarian germ cells 2.

There were fewer cells growing and dividing, more cells dying and a dramatic loss of germ cell numbers, regardless of the gestational age of the fetus. There were significant effects after seven days of exposure to 10 μM of ibuprofen, cell death occurred after two days of treatment. Five days after withdrawing ibuprofen, these harmful effects of ibuprofen were not fully reversed. Ibuprofen use should be restricted to the shortest duration and at the lowest dose necessary to achieve pain or fever relief, especially during pregnancy.

Standing instead of sitting for six hours a day could help people lose weight over the long term, according to a Mayo Clinic. Sedentary behavior like sitting, has been blamed for contributing to the obesity epidemic, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The researchers analyzed 46 studies with 1,184 participants. Participants, on average, were 33 years old; 60 percent were men; and the average weight was 143.3 pounds.

The researchers found that standing burned 0.15 calories (kcals) per minute more than sitting. By substituting standing for sitting for six hours a day, a 143.3-pound adult would expend an extra 54 calories (kcals) in six hours. Assuming no increase in food intake, that would equate to 5.5 pounds in one year and 22 pounds

Moderate to vigorous physical activities in daily life have been encouraged in efforts to maintain and lose weight, and reduce the risk of heart disease, focuses on the daily calories a person burns while doing normal daily activities, not exercising.

The researchers found that calories burned between standing and sitting is about twice as high in men as in women. This reflects the effect of greater muscle mass in men on the amount of calories burned, because calories burned is proportional to the muscle mass activated while standing.

Human papilloma virus (HPV), that causes cervical cancer and some forms of head and neck cancer may hide in small pockets on the surface of tonsils in people not known to carry the virus. The finding, reported by University of Rochester Medical Center researchers in the Journal of the American Medical Association, could be pivotal for the prevention of oropharyngeal cancers that form on the tonsils and tongue.

By mid-adulthood, most people have been exposed to HPV. The same strains that cause cervical cancer (mainly HPV 16 and 18) cause head and neck cancers. While verified tests exist to detect HPV in people before they develop cervical cancer, the same is not true for HPV-related head and neck cancers, which are expected to outnumber cervical cancer.

Only about five percent of HPV-infected people will develop cancer of the mouth or throat, suggesting most people's immune systems can easily hold back HPV infections. Matthew Miller, M.D., associate professor of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery at URMC believes the answer lies is biofilms - thin, slimy sheets of bacteria. He and his colleagues found HPV encased in biofilms inside pockets on the tonsil surface, called tonsil crypts, which is where HPV-related head and neck cancers often originate.

Researchers studied tissue samples from 102 patients who had elective tonsillectomies. Five of those samples contained HPV and four contained high risk strains, HPV 16 and 18. In every case, HPV was found in tonsil crypts biofilms. They believes HPV is shed from the tonsil during an active infection and gets trapped in the biofilm, where it may be protected from immune attack. In the crypts, the virus likely lays in wait for an opportunity to reinstate infection or invade the tonsil tissue to develop
cancer.

Lack of universal HPV immunization and the potential for the virus to evade the immune system even in individuals with detectable HPV in their blood, our findings could have far-reaching implications for identifying people at risk of developing HPV-related head and neck cancers and ultimately preventing them.

Sugar and spice are not healthy when it comes to vaping or inhalation. Exposure to e-cigarette flavoring chemicals and liquids can cause significant inflammation to monocytes, a type of white blood cell and many flavoring compounds are also toxic, with cinnamon, vanilla and buttery flavors among the worst. That's the finding of new research published in open-access journal Frontiers in Physiology, which also found that mixing e-cigarette flavors has a much worse effect than exposure to just one.

The use of e-cigarettes has exploded in the past decade as traditional cigarette consumption has declined. Vaping exposes the lungs to flavoring chemicals when the e-liquids are heated and inhaled. Since the flavoring chemicals are considered safe to eat, e-cigarettes are often considered and advertised as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes.

This new study, led by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre in the United States, wanted to test the assumption that vaping nicotine-free flavored e-liquids is safer than smoking conventional cigarettes. Previous studies show that flavors used in e-cigarettes cause inflammatory and oxidative stress responses in lung cells.

Users of e-cigarettes also show increased levels oxidative stress markers in the blood compared to non-smokers. The new study extends this to assess the effects of commonly used flavoring chemicals, as well as e-liquids without nicotine, directly on immune cells-a type of white blood cell called monocytes.

Exposure to the e-cigarette flavoring chemicals and e-liquids led to higher production of two well-established biomarkers for inflammation and tissue damage mediated by oxidative stress. Furthermore, many of the flavoring chemicals caused significant cell death with some flavors being more toxic than others.

A new study conducted by Ohio University scientists suggests that a little more sunlight might restore damage to cardiovascular system. The study shows that vitamin D3 which is made by the body naturally when skin is exposed to the sun can significantly restore the damage to the cardiovascular system caused by several diseases like hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Vitamin D3 is associated with the bones. However, in recent years, in clinical settings people recognize that many patients who have a heart attack will have a deficiency of D3. It doesn't mean that the deficiency caused the heart attack, but it increased the risk of heart attack. Nanosensors shows that vitamin D3 can be beneficial, especially for the function and restoration of the cardiovascular system.

A major discovery from these studies is that vitamin D3 is a powerful stimulator of nitric oxide (NO), which is a major signaling molecule in the regulation of blood flow and the prevention of the formation of clots in the cardiovasculature. Additionally, vitamin D3 significantly reduced the level of oxidative stress in the cardiovascular system. Treatment with vitamin D3 can significantly restore the damage to the cardiovascular system caused by several diseases, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes, while also reducing the risk of heart attack.

These studies, performed at Ohio University, are the first to identify the molecular mechanism of vitamin D3-triggered restoration of the function of damaged endothelium in the cardiovasculature. While these studies were performed using a cellular model of hypertension, the implication of vitamin D3 on dysfunctional endothelium is broader. The dysfunction of endothelium is a common denominator of several cardiovascular diseases, particularly those associated with ischemic events.

Vitamin D3 may be of clinical importance in the restoration of dysfunctional cardiac endothelium after heart attack, capillary endothelium after brain ischemia (stroke), hypovolemia, vasculopathy, diabetes and atherosclerosis. This suggestion is strongly supported by several clinical studies which indicate that vitamin D3 at doses higher than those currently used for the treatment of bone diseases, may be highly beneficial for the treatment of the dysfunctional cardiovascular system.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists recommends using prescription painkillers sparingly, if at all, after surgery. There are effective alternatives and many people don't need opioids at all or at least should drastically reduce the amount they take. Opioid painkillers like OxyContin (oxycodone) and Vicodin (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) are addictive, the addiction can develop after taking just a few of them.

Post-surgical prescription have played a role in opioid epidemic. Despite the risk of dependence, many surgery patients receive prescriptions for a month's supply or more of opioid pills. And some of the patients are still using them three months or longer after their surgery.

More than 2 million Americans abuse opioids, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since 2000, opioid overdose deaths in the United States have increased 200 percent. To reduce reliance on painkillers, the anesthesiologists' group offers advice for coping with discomfort as you recover from surgery:
Only take opioids when in extreme pain . Medications such as ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxen (Aleve) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) can manage pain and soreness. These medications are not addictive and are far less risky than opioids.

Understand that soreness and discomfort after surgery are normal and will improve within a day or two. These sensations are different than pain, which is typically sharp or intense. While in recovery after surgery, try to be clear when asked if you are in pain. Specify if you are sore, uncomfortable or in serious pain.

If you have significant pain, ask that an opioid prescription be limited to a small amount, such as five pills. If you do take opioids, take them only for a day or two after surgery, three days at most. Your pain will improve significantly within a few days whether or not you take opioids. Those who are in continued severe pain after surgery can engage in exercise, use nerve blocks and non-opioid medications.

A strain of bacteria found in milk and beef may be a trigger for developing rheumatoid arthritis in people who are at risk, according to a new study from the University of Central Florida. A team of UCF College of Medicine researchers has discovered a link between rheumatoid arthritis and Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, known as MAP, a bacteria found in about half the cows in the United States. The bacteria can be spread to humans through the consumption of infected milk, beef and produce fertilized by cow manure.

For the study, researchers recruited 100 of her patients who volunteered clinical samples for testing. Seventy-eight percent of the patients with rheumatoid arthritis were found to have a mutation in the PTPN2/22 gene, the same genetic mutation found in Crohn's patients, and 40 percent of that number tested positive for MAP. People born with this genetic mutation and who are later exposed to MAP through consuming contaminated milk or meat from infected cattle are at a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease that causes the immune system to attack a person's joints, muscles, bones and organs. Patients suffer from pain and deformities mostly in the hands and feet. It can occur at any age but the most common onset is between 40 and 60 years old and is three times more prevalent in women. Some RA patients suffer from Crohn's disease and vice versa, the researchers say a national study needs to investigate the incidence of the two diseases in the same patients.

New research has found that women who follow a "Mediterranean" diet in the six months before assisted reproductive treatment have a significantly better chance of becoming pregnant and giving birth to a live baby than women who did not.

Researchers asked women about their diet before in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment and found that those who ate more fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, fish and olive oil, and less red meat, had a 65-68% greater likelihood of achieving a successful pregnancy and birth compared to women with the lowest adherence to the Mediterranean-style diet.

Researchers assessed the diet of different women through a food frequency questionnaire when they enrolled at an Assisted Conception Unity in Athens, Greece, for their first IVF treatment. The questionnaire asked them about how often they ate certain groups of food in the preceding six months; the results gave the women a MedDiet Score, which ranged from 0-55 with higher scores indicating greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet. The women were aged between 22-41 and were non-obese (body mass index of less than 30 kg/m 2 ).

Researchers, led by Associate Professor Nikos Yiannakouris at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Harokopio University of Athens, divided the women into three groups depending on their MedDiet Score: the first group had scores between 18 to 30, the second scored between 31-35 and the third group scored between 36 to 47.

They found that compared to the 86 women in the highest scoring group, the 79 women in the lowest scoring group had significantly lower rates of pregnancies (29% versus 50%) and live births (26.6% versus 48.8%). When the researchers looked at women younger than 35 years old, they found that every five-point improvement in the MedDiet Score was linked with an approximately 2.7 times higher likelihood of achieving a successful pregnancy and live birth.

Overall, 229 women (93.9%) had at least one embryo transferred to their wombs; 138 (56%) had a successful implantation; 104 (42.6%) achieved a clinical pregnancy (one that can be confirmed by ultrasound); and 99 (40.5%) gave birth to a live baby. Women attempting fertility should be encouraged to eat a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, because greater adherence to this healthy dietary pattern may increase the chances of successful pregnancy and delivering healthy baby.

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet may also help improve semen quality. Taken together, these findings highlight the importance of dietary influences and diet quality on fertility, and support a favourable role for the Mediterranean diet on assisted reproduction performance. The researchers did not find any association between diet and the chances of successful pregnancies and live births among women aged 35 and older. However, they believe this is because hormonal changes, fewer available eggs and other changes that women experience as they get older could mask the influences of environmental factors such as diet.

Type 2 diabetes is known to be a risk factor for bone fractures. New research in animal models by a team of scientists at UC San Francisco, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley suggests that the disease compromises the collagen within bones, making the bones less flexible and more likely to break.

Adults with Type 2 diabetes have a higher fracture risk for a given bone density, which is otherwise the main clinical predictor of fracture risk. This is a widespread and growing issue now that these individuals are living longer with better insulin management.

Fields and colleagues looked at factors outside of bone density that could explain bone fragility in diabetes. In healthy bones, networks of collagen fibers stretch and slide in response to strain, which helps the bones resist cracking. But hyperglycemia in diabetes leads to the accumulation of advanced glycation end products, which bind collagen fibers to each other and impair their stretching and sliding, according to the new findings.

The researchers examined bones from the lower back and forearm of lean, obese and diabetic obese rat models. They imaged the bones with high-resolution CT scans, tested their biomechanical properties, and measured the collagen networks' response to strain using small-angle X-ray scattering at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Advanced Light Source.

They then simulated the contribution of these various factors to bone strength using supercomputers at the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas. Both the obese rats and the diabetic obese rats had overall weaker bones for a given bone mineral content. In obese rats, the reduced strength was attributable to structural deficits, such as changes to the microarchitecture of the bones and inefficient distribution of bone mass.

In the diabetic obese rats, however, these structural deficits were compounded by material deficits -changes to the collagen networks that were previously not well documented. By comparing the obese rats with the diabetic obese rats, the researchers could isolate the effect of hyperglycemia on bone fragility. In the forearm bones, for example, the collagen changes were responsible for significant reductions in the elastic, yield and ultimate tensile properties of the bone tissue.

The researchers note that they did not study animals with an advanced duration and severity of diabetes, which may limit generalizability, but they expect that long-term diabetes would only further impair bone strength.

The newly discovered drugs combination for skin cancer can help if chemotherapy fails, extending patients’ lives by at least a year. In almost half of kidney cancer patients, by the time the disease is diagnosed it has already spread to other areas of the body due to a lack of symptoms, slashing life expectancy from five years to two. While chemotherapy, which kills both cancer and healthy cells, is used to treat most other advanced cancers, the treatment does not work for most kidney cancers.

The established treatment for the condition is either radiotherapy-which shrinks tumours or tyrosine-kinase inhibitor drugs, including one called sunitinib, which interrupt the blood supply to cancer. However, these only hinder the growth of tumours for four or five months. The drugs, ipilimumab and nivolumab, are already used with remarkable success in the treatment of deadly melanoma skin cancer.

Nivolumab is also used to treat advanced lung tumours. The new trial found that the combination achieved significant kidney tumour shrinkage in 42 per cent of the 425 patients in a trial and reduced the risk of death within two years by 37 per cent. Ipilimumab and nivolumab are immunotherapy drugs that work by enhancing the ability of the body’s immune system cells to attack and destroy cancer. Rather than just putting the cancer into remission for a period, like standard treatments, they appear to carry on working even after treatment has stopped.

During the trial, 840 kidney cancer patients were given either sunitinib or the combination immunotherapy. Those on the combination had four infusions of the two drugs at three-weekly intervals. One-fifth of patients experienced severe side effects such as inflammation of the bowel or liver, and had to stop early. The median overall survival rate [the time at which 50 per cent of patients have died after treatment] for sunitinib was 26 months, but for the combination immunotherapy arm, it has still not been reached 36 months on. More than half of the patients are still alive.

Colonoscopy is the examination of the colon- the large intestine by a gastroenterologist. It is is associated with increased risk of appendicitis, there is an evidence to suggest that colonoscopy can cause appendicitis up to one week after colonoscopy in some patients. The rate of appendicitis and appendectomy in the first week after a colonoscopy is high.

The colon must be completely cleaned before colonoscopy, if bacteria within the colon are altered as the bowel is prepared prior to colonoscopy in ways that increase the likelihood of inflammation, or if the increased air pressure caused by colonoscopy, it may have effects on the colonic mucosa that can predispose people to appendicitis.

Omega-3s from fish is better than flaxseed and other oils for cancer prevention, according to a first-ever University of Guelph study. Prof. David Ma has discovered that marine-based omega-3s are eight times more effective at inhibiting tumour development and growth. This study is the first to compare the cancer-fighting potency of plant- versus marine-derived omega-3s on breast tumour development.

There is evidence that both omega-3s from plants and marine sources are protective against cancer and we wanted to determine which form is more effective. There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids : a-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is plant-based and found in such edible seeds as flaxseed and in oils, such as soy, canola and hemp oil. EPA and DHA are found in marine life, such as fish, algae and phytoplankton.

The study involved feeding the different types of omega-3s to mice with a highly aggressive form of human breast cancer called HER-2. HER-2 affects 25per cent of women and has a poor prognosis. Researchers exposed the mice to either the plant-based or the marine-based omega-3s, beginning in utero. The mice were exposed to the different omega-3s even before tumours developed, which allowed comparing how effective the fatty acids are at prevention.

EPA and DHA can inhibit breast tumour growth, but no one has looked directly at how effective these omega-3s are compared to ALA, exposure to marine-based omega-3s reduced the size of the tumours by 60 to 70 per cent and the number of tumours by 30 per cent. However, higher doses of the plant-based fatty acid were required to deliver the same impact as the marine-based omega-3s.

Omega-3s prevent and fight cancer by turning on genes associated with the immune system and blocking tumour growth pathways. Humans should consume two to three servings of fish a week to have the same effect. Besides certain foods containing EPA and DHA, supplements and functional foods, such as omega-3 eggs or DHA milk, can offer similar cancer prevention effects.

Air breathes in may be causing irregular menstrual cycles. Well documented negative health effects from air pollution exposure include infertility, metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovary syndrome. This study is the first to show that exposure to air pollution among teen girls (ages 14-18) is associated with slightly increased chances of menstrual irregularity and longer time to achieve such regularity in high school and early adulthood.

While air pollution exposures have been linked to cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, this study suggests there may be other systems, such as the reproductive endocrine system, that are affected as well," said corresponding author Shruthi Mahalingaiah, MD, MS, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine and a physician in obstetrics and gynecology at Boston Medical Center.

The menstrual cycle is responsive to hormonal regulation. Particulate matter air pollution has demonstrated hormonal activity. However, it was not known if air pollution was associated with menstrual cycle regularity, until now. The researchers used health and location data gathered in the Nurses' Health Study 2 plus air pollution exposure metrics from the EPA air quality monitoring system to understand a participants' exposure during a particular time window. They found exposure to air pollution in during high school was correlated with menstrual cycle irregularity.

Zika virus is known for a recent outbreak that caused children to be born with microencephaly, or having a small head, and other malformations, new research suggests the virus damages a pregnant mother's placenta, an organ inside a woman's uterus that protects and cares for a growing baby.

Zika virus infection in five pregnant rhesus monkeys caused placental tissues to become thickened and inflamed. As a result, the researchers saw less oxygen being transported across the placenta and to the baby. Decreased oxygen levels in a placenta can impair fetal development and ultimately the health of a baby.

The role of a placenta is to protect and provide nutrition to a growing baby for optimum health Professor Daniel Streblow, Ph.D., and assistant professor Alec Hirsch, Ph.D., both of whom lead molecular microbiology and immunology research at the OHSU Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. Streblow also leads pathobiology and immunology research at the Oregon National Primate Research Center and is a professor of molecular microbiology and immunology within the OHSU School of Medicine.

The reseachers used a non-invasive, in vivo MRI technique to evaluate oxygen levels inside the placenta and oxygen flow between mother and baby. They found that, in monkeys that were infected with Zika early in their pregnancies, the rate of oxygen transport through the placenta decreased about 10-fold. The OHSU research team also determined the Zika virus can readily pass from mother to baby and remain in the baby long-term, leading to a chronic infection in utero.

These findings may provide important insights into the mechanisms by which Zika virus causes disease during pregnancy. By better understanding how both mother and child become infected with and affected by the Zika virus, researchers can determine how to prevent its infection and disease. The OHSU research team is using the knowledge gained from this study to develop a safe and effective Zika vaccine for use during pregnancy.

The genetic diversity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is higher in the vaginal tract than in the blood stream during early infection. When HIV-1 is transmitted from a man to a woman via intercourse, it must penetrate and infect various vaginal layers before reaching the blood.

Previous research has shown that, within a patient, systemic infection is usually established by a single genetic variant of HIV-1 in the blood. However, scientists hypothesize, the vaginal tract may initially harbor a genetically diverse HIV-1 population that is then filtered down to a single variant along the path to the blood stream.

Katja Klein of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and colleagues conducted the first study to compare HIV-1 genetic diversity between the vaginal tract and the blood in newly infected people. They collected and applied next-generation deep sequencing to HIV-1 viruses isolated from the vaginal tract and blood plasma of women within seven months of infection.

This analysis revealed that each patient's vaginal tract generally harbored a diverse range of HIV-1 genetic variants (a mean of 5.7), while the blood had much lower genetic diversity (a mean of 1.7 variants). These results held true regardless of a patient's HIV-1 subtype, use of hormonal contraceptives, or number of sex acts or partners.

All samples in the study were collected at least one month after initial infection, and the researchers acknowledge the possibility that genetic diversity in the vaginal tract may have arisen post-infection. However, they point out that this is unlikely, given that similar diversification was not seen in the blood stream.

These findings present new evidence in support of the idea that a genetic bottleneck winnows out many genetic variants of HIV-1 between the vaginal tract and the blood during early infection. This could improve understanding of the transmission process, thereby informing efforts to develop vaccines and other therapies to prevent against HIV-1 infection.
