I read Achebe's Arrow of God more than 15 years ago and i was enchanted by those deities he mentioned in that classic re Eze Idemmili,Ezeulu,et al.Do you know their legends or the legends of any of such deities like Omaliko Abatete and Ulasi Okija et al because i know that these deities were not only factual but were part of our ancestors' existential reality at a time. Please share with us if you do. Others who know these are also invited.
I currently have an extract of late Professor Acholonu's work "They lived before Adam" where she established beyond doubt that Ndigbo are the progenitors of this earth and the drivers of civilization and spiritual knowledge much more than what we have today.It is sad to note that the poisoned chalice of a knowledge thrusted on us by the colonialists has so damaged our sense of identity that we even question and doubt our very existence except seen with their own lenses.

Can you kindly clear the obvious confusion regarding Onitsha history.One account said they migrated from Benin,while you just gave us their Aro roots.While the Ezechima's theory holds more validity in view of the factual and tangible traces we can still hold on to this day,am totally convinced he was a mystic who went for an expedition to the ancient Benin Kingdom at the height of their splendor but traced his way back when he fell out of grace with his hosts.

Does anyone know the history of Nawfia in Njikoka LGA? Why do they call themselves "Ibu anyi danda"? Why do they refer to Nteje as "Abogu"? And most especially,why are Oyi people so steeped in tradition and also very stubborn? e.g Awkuzu and Nteje?
While colonialism brought its own benefits,it however damaged and severed the fabric that held us tightly.We lost our God given spiritual base and of course that went with our civilization.

Ok let me tell you a little about my visit to osuh ,nnewi LGA.My dad actually named me after his close ibo friend, Uchenna. D man almost gave his life for dad. Ibos r loyal tho.

D man's wife died N we had to travel to his place. I was amazed! Trust me, no village in any region of naija matches Igbo villages. I saw beautiful mansions that can b likened to those in abuja. They tar their roads themselves, never waiting on govt. Village roads o! I realised d owners of Bolton white, top rank, onyx hotels , prince n princess estate,r from that small village. I saw d house of d owner of efab N my tongue almost fell out, d ukahchukus hv their houses inside 1 compound,about 6 beautiful mansions.

Believe me, I didn't see 1 thatched house in dat village, don't know about other ibo villages. Some compounds have expensive cars parked inside,nobody driving them. Ibos gat money mehn!
Holding my family friend so close cos he has so much vision N biz ideas. He's always got ideas.

What of Maryam Babangida auditorium? I mean the abandoned amphitheatre behind U.B.A by green gate/Vet road? Still abandoned or in the pipeline to be completed? Such a magnificient edifice is another sore reminder of the dirty, clanish and parochial politics of Nigeria. Nice transformation of GS building. However,me thinks mixing the paint colour of the building would have made it more alluring. I recalled it was formerly painted in green and white which happen to be UNN traditional colours.That building and the knowledge acquired there have an undeateble position in Nigerian university history forever.
By the way, that sculpture bearing a pride of lions walking round the flame of knowledge is epic. Whoever conceived it nailed it! I dare say,still,that planting multicolored shrub flowers round that edifice,and of course designing it with lights will be a wonder. The physical planning unit here should think outside the box! All the same,nice ones here.

Beautiful and breathtaking pictures of the den. I really commend your effort @nnewi1stson, I would have loved to meet you but unfortunately I'm not yet in school (as you can see the environment is still in dearth of its buzz due to the absent of students), would be returning this week though. UNN has really been transformed right from Prof Nebo's tenure to date. Each faculty now wearing new look with beautiful edifice springing up. The departments also are not left out with every class having soothing desk for students with Hitech starboard installed in each. The faculty of social sciences seem to be the one enjoying much of these breeze of change (LOL!!) with almost every departments now having its large building coupled with a brand new faculty of social sciences phase II still under construction beside St. Peter's chaplaincy. Of recent the current VC has connected the whole school with wireless internet facility (powered by Tenace) but the encryption of the service is making boring for some of us. The number of students per room for boys has been reduced to 5 (heard it would have been 4) but boys still be boys na ...and to the other super lion, the company incharge of the school's cleaning and maintenance is 'total facility management' and not Akiota which is the school's construction company (not owned by the school). I hope Ifeanyi Uba would just channel his money into completion of the school's database building still uncompleted beside the library which he started instead of sponsoring our ungrateful politician (...that would even earn him an ad infinitio legacy).

Good to know that good things are happening in my alama mata at such breathtaking pace. All the transformations you reeled out seemed so strange when I recall what it was like in our time. The new VC should run with the vision without looking back.Expositions like this also make me wonder the criteria for university ranking being churned out yearly by the Lagos/Ibadan media elements! @Christjames and Nnewi1st son,which departments anf levels are u? The first twin long white and green painted buildings in his pic should be Awolowo and Aja Nwachukwu Halls..I remember ward round things" The other edifice with a circular roof beside the white building should be the refurbished Students recreation centre which separates Bello+Eyo ita halls and the hitherto metioned Halls of residence. And of course the tree lined boulevard should be the road that proceeded from nnamdi azikiwe library to freedom square.the building with lush lawns is definitely the refurbished vc office. None of these places were transformed while I was in school but I can recognise them all from their background.meanwhile,I commend which ever regime introduced such physical transformations I saw in those pics. Commendable,I must say .those fresh roads tho....

Making Enugu an international holiday haven must be taken very seriously. As well as building a coal powered power plant to ensure regular electricity in the city.
We must complete that abandoned International Conference Center building and the Hotel and Igbo history museum planned for that location. These will help build on conference tourism as well as bring people to see ancient Igbo cultural tools,agricultural tools, gods,clothing, mud house design, Igbo village design etc displayed in a museum. This also helps us preserve these cultural things for future generations to see as we modernize.

I wish Nike lake is developed for leisure boating as an added attraction for couples coming into Enugu.

@CJ. U mean alll these facilities you mentioned willl be in that complex when completed? I dare say that complext alone holds the key to the bursting of Enugu's tourism potentials because I know countless of my folks overseas who will give anything to catch a glimpse of an Igbo exclusive museum having being disconnected from their roots,no thanks to long years sojourn abroad. Meanwhile,I read somewhere on this thread before the NL tsunami that it was contractual complications that stalled the completion.Trust me,if completing that complex which I saw from the original render will also contain a specialist hospital and medical schoool is the only thing Gburugburu will do,I for one will be satisfied cos it will enhance both the prospects and landscape of Enugu.

My heart goes out to everyone that has lost their mom or dad,we have come close to losing him many times,the last was a couple of weeks ago.

He also felt death was near and proceeded to pronounce blessings on all his kids and grand kids
He asked us to tell our mom that he loved her dearly and has no grudges towards anything she must have done and that she should also forgive any wrongs he did.
Nobody including all the staff in the hospital expected him to see the light of the next day,he had turned cold,his tongue fallen in and eyes rolled up.
We wept and wept and refused to accept it,my sister was shaking him violently and asking him not to leave us
At a time he mustered up energy and told her to stop holding him back ,that he could see his late friend Obi and was about to join him

We called our pastor in Nigeria and he prayed for two hours straight mostly in tongues and then he asked my sister to go home and sleep
We did not want to accept daddy was about to die
We went to bed that night with our phones by the pillow expecting a call from the hospital that he breathed his last
Miraculously he woke up the next day
I flew in a couple of days later and we checked him out of that hospital and moved him to this one and God granted us favor

I will give this full testimony later

While I await more light to be thrown on Ezechima puzzle by my brothers on this thread,I also appeal to anybody who knows the history and the factors that led to towns in different states having same prefix(Isu) to their names even when they are located hundreds of kilometres apart from each other to enlighten me. For instance: Isu-Awa(Enugu state),Isu-Ulo(Anambra),Isu-Aniocha(Anambra),Isu-Ochi(Abia),Isu-Njaba(Imo). Any body with a clue? Any homogenous progenitory theory? Any migratory basis for their dispersion? Honestly,I wish our ancestors documented their lives!!!#sad# Happy weekend Umunnem!

The account that Eze Chima was an Nri mystic on an expedition to Benin is the result of recent speculation. Just like the account that he was an Aro trader. I also don't think he came from Benin. The Bini do not have any memory of such a figure. Egharevba only incorporated the Ezechima story in subsequent editions of his history of Benin after obtaining it from non-Bini sources.

The Agbor people, however, have traditions that Eze Chima or Eze Chime (as he is known in Aniocha in Delta) was an Agbor man. His name in Agbor traditions is given as Kime. According to Agbor traditions, during the time of Obi Adigwe of Agbor, Kime took some of the paraphernalia of kingship and fled to Obior, which became the 'spiritual centre of the Umu Ezechime clan of Delta State. (Agbor is said to still commemorate the event in their Osiezi festival.)

Early in the 20th century, Northcote Thomas also wrote that the account he obtained from the Umu Ezechime clan was that they migrated from 'somewhere between Igbodo and Onitsha Ugbo'...which, I think, roughly approximates to the frontier between the Ika and the Aniocha.

I think the whole Ezechima/Ezechime story is a remembrance of how Bini-style political and cultural institutions diffused into the Aniocha axis and then eventually to Onitsha, not firsthand from Benin, but from Ika. And Ezechime/Ezechima was more likely an Ika man than anything else.

In Obior, Ezechime was said to have introduced the Ogbanigbe festival, a festival common among the Ika people. Dein is another word that appears to have originally been distinctly Ika, but in the forms nwa dei and umu dei are now widely diffused in the Bini-style kingdoms that sprang up east of Ika - another likely indicator of an eastward spread of Bini-influenced political ideas directly from Ika rather than firsthand from Benin.

Thanks for your insight and I must say am hearing this Ika foundation of Ezechima for the first time.There is absolutely no doubt that he was an Igbo man.His origin and itinerary were the unclear issues here. I recalled someowhere in this forum where discussions on Nri history noted that at the height of their power,Nri was like the spiritual empire at a time that "export" her dibias+mystics to far flung corners way beyond their enclaves. Ezechima must have been not only a warrior but a man of no mean spiritual repute to establish towns on both sides of the great River.I sincerely wish something like our own version of "dead sea scrolls" would be found where this matter and many more speculations on Igbo history and traditions would be unravelled.#Just a wish tho# Peace#

This thread is not only exciting,it is also one of the most educative on Igbo history with emphasis on the various Igbo groups being dealt with by some of the brightest igbo minds on nl. @Radillo,Odenigbo,Pazienza,ChineyeN et al,please how did u guys know soooo much about Igbo history and traditions? I found it hard to believe I know almost nothing compared to u guys.Kindly recommend books and sites where I can consult to shore up my knowledge.My cousins here in the states are also passionate about Igboland eventhough they've been here just 3 times in their lifetimes so far. Please can someone also tell me who is "Ezechima"?.Was he an Nri mystic on expedition to Benin who through his uncommon prowess was able to found many towns today or was he a Benin prince banished from the palace and how come he bore igbo name? I shudder to think of the latter as am totally convinced he was an Igbo man on a journey.Even the great Zik of Africa hinted on his Benin ancestry and I found that repulsive.Please you guys should assist and clear the air on this as it has been a topic of endless debate here.Igbo bu ofu+May God bless us all!

APC was meant to offer Nigeria a viable alternative and a fresh political phase/face since PDP is damged beyond redemption.To this end,I thougth they would have fielded better candidates ie What happened to Fashola?,where is Oshoimole.?Donald Duke is still very much around!!!. These are technocrats with proven records of excellence+an understanding of what modern governance means.That Nigerian youths are here debating over nonsense is a huge shame and an indication that truly we have lost our cause!Why must it be Buhari?? The weight of evidence of gross abuse and anomalies documented against Buhari all over the place makes mockery of whatever APC claims to represent.Many Nigerians don't have any affiliation with any political party and will celebrate good governace wherever found. Buhari is a relic of our ugly past and a part and pacel of everything wrong with Nigeria today.Is it our poor sense of history or merely slective amnesia? Whatever it is,this debate and all the other senseless Buhari based jabs all over the internet is an indictment on Nigerian youths! #Pity+sad#
