Stolen? What will the thief use it for? Less likely to be stolen. Damaged? Absolutely and ceratainly! Someday a drunk driver or a "Learner" will miss road and bump into the rails.But then that is the essence of having maitenace service agreement with the contractors or an agency dedicated soley to such maintenace.The rails idea is already at work in some major streets of Lagos and the benefits can be imagined ascthetically speaking when you have all the flowers,carpet grasses and ornamental trees growing without being stampeded by pedestarians within the rails fortress.believe me,seemingly little things like this says a lot about our level of environmental /landscaping awareness.

Good to know that more people are becoming aware of the infamous "road edge" sand accumulation. I've noted that earlier on this thread.Additionally,the irritating and annoying growth of shrubs and weeds in the road medians come next.The solution lies in erecting metal rails to protect the medians and providing spaces every 1000 metres with Zebra crossing to properly guide ease of crossing over the other side of the road.From the pics I've seen so far,pedestrians walk through the median from all points and directions and these ensured flowers,ornamental trees and grasses planted on these mediand don't grow.Check out Chime Avenue and almost every other major road except Bisala. Another point of referece were the street light poles.You find the switch compartment dangling open with the naked wires threatening to "shock" u if dare get close.Iam perfectly sure Service Agreements were contained in the various contracts signed with the companies who provided these utilities.Nothing beats clinical execution in provision of public utilities.If the various ministries cannot give clinical touches to our facilities,then let the govt establish "EnugU Metro Devt Board" as obtains in some other states who take these things serious.happy sunday alll!!

I once did a thesis on "The Politics of population census in Nigeria" while in school and all the anomalies and more shameful realities totured my sensisbilities long after that study.Nothing captures the notion that "Nigeria is a lie" than the parochial dynamics in our census figures.That Jegga, inspite of all his posturings to integrity, should allow himself to be used in fostering such a lie is a pity.The clean up exercise in INEC which brought all these to light already should give the Federal governement a pointer for more radical " reforms after 2015 elections. SUch a shame of a nation!

Most countries having the latest structures or amenities had to rebuild after a war like situation. Check them all out. I guess even some southwest states might be forcing the issue of burnt markets as means to an end. Its best to rebuild after ruin, it can be even cheaper than renovation/rehabilitation.

The other regions may not have borne the brunt of the war like the east but they also became victims of immediate migration of easterners. This had impact on their social amenities, and for the west who were practicing a pseudo socialist type of government had to now take care of a lot more people on health, education etc; apart from maintaining roads more frequently and having to deal with more waste and refuse. II'm not sure the west actually succeeded in dealing effectively with that.

The east have the opportunity to make all their social amenities of good quality and in good quantity enough to take care of Igbo and even other visitors and migrants to the east; if it hopes to have a sustained development.

I'm into construction I know a thing or two about this. The roads in most pictures in the east are as good as the use, not yet due to the quality of the works done on it. It when you have trailers constantly plying roads made for keke napep and motorcycle that you'd know if your govt is serious or not. If they are going to make some roads just for private cars in an east where each man considers himself a big man might be a challenge.

There's a case on the Lagos house of assembly about a man building a petroleum tank farm within Ikeja GRA!! You will have many of those to grapple with as many are used to exploiting infrastructure than maintaining them.

I had said repeatedly that the biggest challenge for Igbo, asides getting a trusted leader is how to create an enabling environment to take care of a sudden surge in population. All aspects of governance, including policy making, will have to become sharper and more proactive. Many Igbo take this lightly.

When you insinuate that the West,by accomodating the easterners on the throes of civil war migration actually bore a huge cost,you are unmindful that the immigrants actually were creating value and wealth in the new locality and remitting same via taxes and consumption expenditure hence the accepting society(West) are on the gaining side.And when u posit that the aftermath of the civil war presented the east with an opportunity to build solid structures from the scratch,then it is obvious you forgot the policy thrust of the federal government immediately after the war vis 20 pounds policy,indegenisation decree,abandoned property,decimation of the active and skilled human resouces of the Igbos in a gruesome war not to talk of their properties looted and the trauma of defeat. Even the Gowon's government's post-war reconstruction effortd(3 R's) was a sham and a shame to ponder.How could anybody expect such a group to build "solid structures" from the ground up in view of such debilitating realities I may be wrong,but forgive me if I say you have never been to the east to really asses the growth and development made only possible by a people's sheer will to overcome their social-cultural-economic-political handicaps without the expected sustainable federal government investment in capital expenditure.For every untapped body of water in the east,there are multiple functional governement constructed dams in the north.The same contrast is evident in other amenities. Please am not trying to create excuses for whatever lapses we have,but it is also noted that genuine reintegration follows after every war.Germany after the second world war,The hutus in Rwanda,Russian with the advent of Peter The Great,etc.That was never done in our case rather a host of systematic policy driven factors were integrated to keep the" vanquished" underneath for good. About the population angle you stated,I saw Chino above giving you his estimate of what Onitsha population alone and I tell u what,Aba is more but who cares to find out in a nation where the parochial politics of population census ensures we may never have the true population distribution.It took the UN to tell us that the South East is the most densely populatiod region in Nigeria although Nigerian population figures say the contrary.My submission:Pending the existence of standard highways,seaport and standard rail lines,Igboland from Igbanke to Ndoni is primed,ready and already roaring in developmental efforts.Thanks for ur time.Damn error if any!

semitunde: I'm not an economist, I go by common sense and experience.

The primary and most important factor in guaging economies intrinsically, is the living population. Living population isnclude humans, plants and animals(as farms or livestock). If you have these, you can not only grow an economy, you can more importantly, sustain it.

Therefore all what intelligent economies do is to do what will make people come over. Or do things with their land to improve planting and rearing (basically).

Dubai was built with the aim of attracting people to stay there on the short, medium to long term. To make this happen they used what they had, arid land and loads of money. Massive constructions, attracting thousands immediately, ensured the place would be needing everything we are discussing here immediately. But to make sure the projects were not pipe dreams after the constructions were over that needed to make sure those structure were put to use and /or continue building other structures. That is why Dubai is being sold as a tourist destination, probably harder that other places. They are still having their issues, many building s are still empty without buyers.

Coming to anambra, I'm using anambra because chino had limited the scope-many indigenes don't stay at home. Nothing is really out of the ordinary that forces Igbo to actually go home. The east is not very strong on land availability so farming and livestock management is limited. What is left for its sustenance is its people, actually staying there.

What can make people come and stay is continuous large scale industrialisation or large scale construction or large scale value chained agriculture. The last has limitations as I mentioned above but the first two are possible- with a unifying factor.

Someone said the igbo are cuturaly and religiously homogeneous. I beg to disagree. Igbos are homogeneous only when expedient. The mist homogenous Igbo group is the individual family unit, every other group is an alliance of expedience. I know many will disagree and go emotional but looking in, that's the picture. The pull of whichever alliance an Igbo is in is quite strong as he tries to out his energy into the project. If Igbo can get a good leader to rally round- one trusted and respected by other ethnic groups, they will truly be unstoppable.

Right now they are not decided yet or should I say, they don't have a clear thought out plan for sustainable development. Hotels and malls are good, but those are supposed to serve the people who are already attracted/attached to the place.

Ibadan has all what anambra has but ibadan's selling point is its proximity to Lagos and a cheaper alternative. What does anambra have to sway a rich lagosian?

Finally. Discussions I expect here include a high speed train connecting the east to the west and middle belt. So that it becomes easier to take a trip east for omugo or a fishing festival. To take electronic locally made aba shoes to the north etc.

The best bet for a sustainable east is in coorooration with other parts, through an articulate trusted intelligent leader.

Nice points you have there even as I beg to differ on some points.Anytime you are tempted to conduct a comparative analysis between the east and other regions,never forget that just barely 4 decades ago,that region was a pile of rubbles and a wasteland ravaged by missiles and on the throes of human and material waste after the civil war. Aside Animal husbandry,specifically cattle rearing,the east has the potentialities to sustain itself in food production.I recall my Dad telling me about M.I Okpara's agric revolution via farm serllement schemes.And specifically,the faculty of Agriculture in UNN once supplied all the chicken protein consumed in the entire region.Ebonyi state alone is an sleeping sub-regional food hub. The difference between Onitsha and Aba from Kano,Lagos and PH is that while the latter cities draw their strenghts from Govt intervention and interplay of centripedal and centrifugal forces,the two eastern cities where wholly indegenious: grown, built,sustained and developed by the sheer efforts of the locals.Lagos and co have all the full compliments of key governemnt investments that drive growth and development. Talking about a cordinated development plan anchored on the directives of a unified leadership,the little history I know so far showed that Igbos were never cordinated as such yet never lacked direction.The existence of a competve,individualistic yet communal worldview always provide a rallying/united point.Unfortunately,we always gloss over the effects of the civil war vis the current Igbo predicament.The war displaced the Igbos economically,destroyed the socio-cultural superstructure and the recovery has not been as fast as expected. The current rennaissance of Pan-Igboism is merely a gradual attempt to revival. I dare say that the focus of the different active state govts in the region(Anambra,Enugu,Imo and Abia) was on leveraging on their individual strenghts.Your postulations for a functional rail line is apt and long over due while I dare add that the existence of a functional seaport anywhere within 50 kilometers from either Onitsha or ABa will boost their potentials excessively. But why is he not finishing his good works with well manicured medians?
The trend now as shown in pics below is to plant trees and flowers in road medians to give the city a great aesthetic and refreshing feel.

If he can pay all these billions to build world class roads in Enugu, it is definitely worth a few thousand naira to get a landscaping crew to go round and plant flowers and trees along these roads. All concrete and tar without natural plants to adorn the spaces make the environment look dry and perhaps dirty in some cases.[/size]

Bros u are absolutely correct.I shared similar sentiments in my post slightly above u.As a teenager,I usually spend my holidays in Jos when the city was in d height of its glory and I recall they have an agency called "Jos Metropolitan Development Board"(JMDB) and they had departments in the agency that focus on particular aspects of maintenance. Lagos state govt currently has Agencies for "Gardens and Parks,Signage regulation in the city(LASSA),Lagos public works dept that undertake minor road repairs,an agency that ensure all the street lights and traffic light poles are in good upright position and d lights working,to name but a few.Good enougjh all these agencies are fuctioning very well.Those are the kind of interventions Enugu needs in view of its emerging status.I sincerely wish the next Governor will proceed along these lines.Only then can the massive investment made in the last 15 years be appreciated.

kmariko: For a modern economy you cannot do without airport and seaport. Yes Nnewi and surrounding are trying in the Nigeria context of very low industrial base but it is still very nascent with products limited to local consumption thus a limited value chain with low employment and tax base. Airports and seaports add to increase the pace if industrialization as goods made say in nnewi are shipped all over the country and subregion at competitive prices and time.

@Chief Kmariko.Thanks a lot for your input.I was about responding to our brother when I saw your response. Currently,what we see are pockets of individual entreprenueria and corporate excellence.A seaport will open up the untapped drive in the millions of micro units littered all over the southeast and be an added motivation for these medium and micro units to expand their operational capacities and give exportation a big shot! While a seaport will not be a universal panacea to all our socio-economic challenges,its impact is still critical to our comprehensive development more so when you consider the total cost of depending on APapa and Tincan over the years.I wish us well!

Great insightful contributions all through. First,who said Enugu cannot have a boulevard filled with high rise sky scrapers in Okpara Avenue which is our CBD? Enugu as a prime city needs the balance and I know it will come to that in due time. Talking about developing our clusters of emerging cities,it is suprising that no one spoke about the role a seaport will play in imploding the promising economy of d South East! Already,all the micro-indicators(thriving middle class,massive pool of entrepreneurs,innovators,educated populace,large markets and a very mobile population,to name but a few) are evident and waiting to be tapped. Beautiful,soul searching and sad at the same time.The pictures from the Biafran war were heartbreaking..Pictures of smiling happy kids and lovely interacting populace give me hope that joy can still be found in our current maze of errors..All in all,Nigeria is still within the throes of redemption if only all the commentators who laud the beauty in these pictures vis our possibilities as a people will start preaching the message of change,restitution,genuine reconciliation and love..It is well with us all!!

[color=#006600][/color] Bros did I just read where u said the settler's name in Anaedo was Mmaku? Goodness! That's the name of my town in Awgu local govt area in Enugu state! My town history had it that our progenitor(Mmaku Ezeani) was a mobile hunter who came from Awka-Agulu axis in the early 16th Century and settled there with his 4 wives and subsequently spread out. I don't doubt a connection because I have a very deep conviction my roots are in Anambra state and a certain metaphysical affinity I build naturally with Anmbrarians convinced me am right.
It would appear then that the Anaedo area had early contacts with the Ukwuani area. Because according to Nnewi traditions, there was a man from Ndoni (same general area as Aboh) who settled in Nnewi about the 16th c. I think his name was given as Mmaku. I don't now remember the details of that tradition, but I think Nnewi traces its monarchy from him. Its been a while I read about it.

The tradition and many other details about Nnewi history and culture can be found in John Alutu's book "Groundwork of Nnewi History". An excellent book. I found copies years ago at the College of Health Sciences Library in Okofia, Otolo-Nnewi.[/quote]

@All. I earlier pleaded that this should not degenerate to a debate re e-wars that characterise NL but alas the parochial-bigoted-champions are here even on issues that concern us as brothers.
I still mantain my stand,just like many columnists pointed above, that anybody comparing both universities is being deliusional. I completely give kudos to UNIZIK for their emerging standard,yet shoe get size.
Structures,quality of lecturers,academic values and especially the communal philosophy of UNN is unrivalled in the entire federation.
UNIZIK transformed rapidly under Ilochi Okafor,who by the way is a Superlion,and they have been moving at that pace ever since.
Let us celebrate the excellence in our eastern universities and cease making a bundle mockery of ourselves in these needless jabs.
