Serious am a bit skeptical about Nebo, as the Minister of Power what did he achieve in Igboland, he couldn't turn around Oji River Power Plant, he could'nt lure for Coal Plant to be developed in Enugu, he couldn't even mediate between Nnaji and Offor so that Geometric will start working.

I left Ogwashi Ukwu this morning, people were telling me the town is yet to see electric light close half a decade while our daughter NOI is there in Abuja acting more Nigeria than Lugard.

Serious we need to stop seeking advice from politicians because these dolts are taking our simplicity to stupidity.
Ugwuanyi should involve known technocrats and succesful businessmen and women like Berth Nnaji, PEACE Mass, Nnaji, Soludo, Kalu Idika kalu, Leo Stan Ekeh, Frank Nweke Jnr et al for advice and not hardcore and career politicians that are looking for every opportunities to feather their own nest .

If the calls for Ekweremmadu's resignation was anchored on his inability to attract remarkable federal projects to Igboland,then I support them fully. It is also disheartening to note that ENugu/Onitsha expressway remains a death trap till today. Friends,I still recall that work began on that road since 2007 and it is a shock that it remains uncompleted 8 years later! And their Is sTill no indication of compleTion anytime soon from what I saw and read on this thread.Such a shame!I recall seeing the Umunya section of that road on this thread.That section has completely failed and can easily be a blind spot for robbers to terrorize travellers. Whatever Ekweremmadu did in his constuency was covered in his constituency allowance and for heaven's sake,constructing track roads and erecting ugly and crude looking solar powered street lights is nothing to shout about!
I also have my reservations about Ugwuanyi's 15 man committee but let's see what they can come up with before year ends.

Have you ever imagined what Chime or Obi/Obioano would have done in their respective states if they had the kind of resources Rochas and Amechi had at their disposal? Iva valley ....... a settlement of people in the outskirts of Enugu. There is a flurry of activities in the outskirts of Enugu as investors buy up lands around here and build new estates. There is a new estate coming up across the road from this old settlement.

i am not here to ostracize anyone nor beg them to "spy" anyone for me. I am not an intelligence officer that know how such things happen. The same man with the temerity to curse his brother in hausa cannot dare greet a hausa man in Igbo, talk less of cursing him in Igbo.

Since he likes speaking hausa, i know the hausa revere Arabic so much. Thus, i advised him to upgrade to Arabic which i'm sure will gain more respect than merely speaking hausa.

Talking about Igbo language preservation.Me thinks the Ohaneze folks are getting their priorities wrong ultimately. Our language embodies our civilization and losing the language means losing our civilization and losing our civilization is losing our very eSsence.An umbrella body like Ohaneze ought to make cultural rennaissance and language preservation an integral focus and not the scare time and resources they waste on politicking,back biting and betrayal of group interests.

I am personally not against people taking pride in other African languages. I speak yoruba very well. You just have to have a good sense of person, so that you can see what is better to emulate from other cultures and what is better in your own culture than the new culture. So that you don't copy wholesale and blindly. If you cannot see anything good about yourself, then you'd be a rolling stone and object of ridicule to others. In a way our younger generation have no sense of who they are and what forces have been shaping their lives. This is what concerns me the most.

As a person, i also believe in compromise just to let things be.However, I soon realized that i had actually learned this attitude from my parents as Igbo people! I soon asked my parents and others why they had this laid-back attitude of not speaking out against evil, and they said "The War"
Then, they refused to talk about "the war". My father, a former Biafran soldier, did recommend 2 books; "Nigerian revolution and the Biafran war" by Alex Madiebo, so that i could see the true sequence of the tragic events and the dairy of Ojukwu published as " Selected speeches & random thoughts" to understand the desperation of the time and why nobody wished to recall those days in stories.I had since added Faraway in the sky, an account of an American missionary and the legendary Chinua Achebe's personal account "There was a country".

These four books are a must for our youths to get a peek into why Nigeria is how it is and why we must change the tactics we have used in reacting to this oppression that started on May 27th, 1967. Unfortunately, nobody can find the time to tell you these facts unless you disciplined yourself to read and find out for yourself. I recommend these books especially to Chino and Abagworo. It will help them understand who they are and how others see them....and most importantly how to reason in order to see they are actually on the same side!

My point is that we tend to be afraid of speaking out against what we know in our hearts to be false for fear of being disrespected, labeled "Igbotic",illiterate, "tribalistic" or worse. While our adversaries donot hesitate to play the ethnic or religion card when it suits their cause.The reason why many more Igbos died in the second pogrom was simply that naivety of thought that we are all the same, "One Nigeria" and they see me as i see them.So i can call katsina my hometown and invest all my life savings there. Only for the facts to hit them at some point when they are treated differently! Just as our parents learned the hard way.

First,Awka is still an eyesore when one considers the potentials and what a befitting capital city a great state like Anambra should have. Many of us were furious with Peter Obi because he failed to give the state capital a facelift,not taking away his strides in other sectors. Innoson and Dnagote are industrialists but the real beneficiaries of their economic production are their employees ie technicians,managers,suppliers,staff and the endless chain of direct and indirect stakeholders who play key parts in their production process. Such trickle and multiplier effect as described are the bases and catalyst for the vibrant economies we adore the world over.The place of governement policies cannot be over-emphasised of course and that is where i expect the state government to step up. Tax holidays,industrial estates and assisting the foreign investments in securing operational licenses,devoid of the needless bottlenecks which hinder business growth in Nigeria should also form the bedrock of our businness policies.I also expect government at all levels to make laws that restrict capital flight and ensure profits are re-invested into the country.

I recalled informing you,my learned brethren on this thread, a month ago about the collection of diaspora technocrats whose sole aim is to drive an influx of FDIs never seen before into Enugu under Ugwuanyi.I equally told you guys some of them were already enroute to China and Europe? It is also high time the state government should start planning to build a befitting NYSC camp in Anambra state.This Umunya Amazon forest is long overdue for a facelift.Even the access road leading to it is an eyesore if my memory serves me right.There is enough corporate bodies in Anambra state that can donate halls,hostels,boreholes and other critical amenities to make the 3 weeks "toture" a bit convenient.

Awka is the most beautiful and most modern city east of the Niger at the moment. Awka has the most modern and beautiful well-laid out estates, Dubai like flyovers, malls, resorts, some of the best hospitality etc. You can take that to the Hagues!

I am inclined to believe the State government is enforcing strict locality codes for private real estate developers just like we have in Osha and Enugu.It will look unsightly for all these multi-storey edifices to be sharing spaces with bungalows and squatters. At least "broda" Chino and company can also confirm the inner street roads,walkways and appropriate markings are provided?
Either way,am fiercely proud of the strides this thread provided thus far and other Igbo focused threads as well.The developments are indigenous,self-driven and an eternal testament to a people's resolve to conquer their odds.

One thing I discovered about Anambra government and her people is the economic importance of everything they want to get involved with.

I don't like it that Anambra have no standard stadium but it gives me joy that Anambra is ahead in education, health, environment, roads, housing, jobs and lower poverty rate.

Anambra deserves a standard staduim but let's fix the basic things first, there are state in Nigeria with airport nobody uses, some build stadia nobody uses, some built hotels without tourists yet they are down in the pecking order in the MDGs result.

I wish Anambra will use the staduim money to link MCC and Oraifite with a flyover, link Uga street and Atani Road with another flyover and dualize Atani Road for industrial expansion.

I want Anambra to build a State poly in Onicha and open a campus in Nnewi, we can do it if our government had my vision.

I was embittered when Power Mike was sold to Calidons, I used PowerMike when I was still small then in Secondary and I know how much we cherish the stadium being only mini stadium in Onicha Zone back then.
But when I discovered the place isn't that viable, they don't even have staffers, they rarely pay their workers salaries, pitch was already going bald...I lost interest in PowerMike but when I discovered it was bought by Calidon, a big and powerful factory is there now, any day am passing there and see thousands of our people trooping out from the company I feel elated and happy knowing how much food that have been placed people's tables.

Stadium is good but considering current economic reality I will ditch stadium for more people oriented projects like schools, roads and hospitals

No one could have said it better. Rojeny will be ready next year and IFeanyi Uba's stadium will also be ready same next year.A quick fix of Nero's complex will save the day and ensure home matches are played within Anambra state.
The issue of fly overs linking mcc and oraifite vis uga street and atani road will not only be a complete game changer but will totally alter the traffic charcter in those axis.I wonder who benefits from that girdlock and why successive governments failed to appreciate the import of such key projects. Enugu has an enviable development pattern and I think it was a policy from the old eastern region. Centje capped my points with his brilliant arguments but I will walk around town later this weekend to show areal views of some parts of Enugu.

The kind of construction fever that has gripped Enugu has never been seen before, I am building two 3 storey buildings started this month in two parts of Enugu that allows high rises, Nike and Achara layout. Bungalows and duplexes are for the very rich at GRA and Independence layout while our normal shanty towns are at Abakpa, and other hilly settlements.

I am also excited about the future prospects for Enugu housing, with the centenary city coming up with superb layouts comparable to what you see in luxury destinations in the world. The future is surely bright.

I am sure that very soon, we are going to start higher rising buildings with lifts, good parking and good arrangement for water and safety. Its not impossible to have some 30 storey residential blocks inside Enugu. That is what I want to see in the coming years, of course it will be private sector driven, just like everything in this city.

Additionally,when people talk about high rise residences in Enugu,they clearly forget that a part of Abakpa called Ugbene has a flurry of high rise buildings and very much a middle class neighbourhood as obtains in Achara Layout and Uwani.The only snag was the deplorable state of inner street roads. The state housing estate in the eastern part of Abakpa is also an expansive,well laid out trail of well maintained bungalows and duplexes.Former commissioners and other prominent citizens lived there and some still do and the road network is still modest at most. Should the governement treat this area well enough,then we have another jewel rising.I also heard from folks at home that the landscape of the entire Amorji and Edem Nike areas are also beginning to rise with modern and well laid out high rise layouts.
Much as we have ghettos in Abakpa,fine places also abound. Spyder,next time you go to Ibagwa to eat bush meat,biko snap and show the new emerging city within the city! Deme nu!

Burning Grass was first published in 1962 and like a lot of novels by Cyprian Ekwensi, the plot takes place in the northern part of Nigeria. This is the third novel in our series on works by Cyprian Ekwensi.
Mai Sunsaye is the chief of his Fulani cattle herding settlement called Dokan Toro. He is a doctor to the people, a specialist in making charms and amulets and also has the ability to tell the people their fortunes. He is like a general practitioner, a psychiatrist and a fortune teller all rolled into one. Probably your typical native doctor back in the day.
He is the leader of his village Dokan Toro and although he is widely respected by the villagers, he is engaged in a power struggle with Chief Ardo who wants to be the chief of the settlement. Ardo inflicts Sunsaye with Sokugo, a charm of the Fulani. Sokugo Magic causes men to wander off deserting their families and leaving their previous lives behind. Men suffering from Sokugo are also unable to settle in a place for a few days. If a man suffering from Sokugo refuses to continue his wandering he falls seriously ill.
Sunsaye deserts his family and sets off on an aimless quest. He lies to himself that he’s going in search of a lady that fled with his son Hodio but which he has promised to bring back home to his last son Rikku. With Sunsaye out of town, Ardo is able to run Sunsaye’s family out of Dokan Toro and make himself the leader of the village.
The plot from then on follows Sunsaye on his wanderings through several villages, characters and his eventual cure from Sokugo,reuniting with his family and eventual return to Dokan Toro.
In my junior secondary school days, any student you saw in different places within a short time span and who did not not seem to have a clear purpose to his appearances in different locations was said to be suffering from “Sokugo” the wandering disease. At the time I thought this was something from a Chinua Achebe story. It didn’t even cross my mind that this was from a Cyprian Ekwensi story. I think it is safe to assume that this was part of the senior secondary school literature curriculum because I never came across this book as my literature studies ended in junior secondary school.
It is a fun read but definitely not one of my best Cyprian Ekwensi novels.

This post by Enefaa in the blog brings back memories of my childhood when i discovered Cyprian Ekwensi novels! His books magically transported me to the north even though i had never set foot there at the time! Back then i had a good impression of the place....though it was before i started reading and learning of the negative stuff!

Anyone know why Ekwensi set the plots/stories of many of his novels in the north.....was he born there?

Early life, education and family

Ekwensi, an Igbo, was born in Minna, Niger State. He is a native of Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi local government area, Anambra state of Nigeria. His father was David Anadumaka, a story-teller and elephant hunter.[2]

Ekwensi attended Government College in Ibadan, Oyo State, Achimota College in Ghana, and the School of Forestry, Ibadan, after which he worked for two years as a forestry officer.[1] He also studied pharmacy at Yaba Technical Institute, Lagos School of Pharmacy, and the Chelsea School of Pharmacy of the University of London. He taught at Igbobi College.[1]

I dont know if any other person can imagine it because am already conceiving the idea of building a holiday resort at the summit of these hills, and still retain the flora and fauna like we have at Indaba Motel,Four Ways Johannesburg South Africa.Except in our own case,cable cars can be built to connect the resort to the city centre given that road construction will alter much of the natural habitat.Nature is ours to conquer! I can bet with my last dollar that this picture can pass for a downtown neighborhood in Lisbon! The real estate value in the South East is mind boggling.I wonder when we shall acknowledge the roles of facility management/managers in sustaining and appreciating property value.
